nice set there Gary!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:21pm Holly in NC:

Hi Gary! Hi all other friends! Won't be as loquacious as usual, shoring up timbers for yet another super hard rain. Also running down the street to get 2 slices of reasonably close to NYC style pizza from 1 of the best Durham food trucks (even though wheat & I don't get along on multiple levels) because once in a blue moon temporary joy needs to happen.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- oh - you can actually see her eyes if you look hard enuff...yeah fun set !...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:21pm davex:

Glenn: That's right, I thought you just wanted a beer there at first...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Happy pizza-from-a-truck, Holly!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:22pm listener james from westwood:

Holly, I endorse both the pizza and the doctrine on temporary joy.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:23pm pacific standard simon:

@Gary - Just type the names and song titles into Google translate, save the sound file, and blame it if it comes out wrong.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:24pm ndbob:

Heya Holly!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:24pm Gary:

Le Holly!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Hmmm. You think saying "Roman Polanski" and "disturbing" about some lyrics would lead us to dash headlong to Google for a translation? Hmmm.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:25pm Gary:

Good advice, PSS!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:26pm glenn:

tonight i'm making baked basa fillets with onion butter sauce. rice and roasted cauliflower on the side. tomorrow night i go to see zucchero.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:26pm davex:

Gary: If you need help with the French, I can see what I can do...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:27pm Gary:

@Doug, basically, what I was able to determine, is that Roman seems to have wound up in Emannuelle's bed ...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Tell us something we don't know, Gary.

@glenn ... before the show I prepped items for chicken pot pie ... which will be cooked in a cast iron skillet using biscuits instead of pie crust

Alors James!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:35pm carol:

Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:37pm listener james from westwood:

Oh, man . . . fish, pizza, chicken pot pie . . . my hasty mid-work cereal is looking pretty wan right now. . . .
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:38pm Holly in NC:

Heya @ndbob, @ljfw, @doug, and LE GARY!
Love ye ye. Hate the French language. Only course I ever dropped. Picture this: Pretty darn prestigious college with awesome housing. My bedroom = 1 floor down and 1 wee campus crossing across from French classroom (seriously, once downstairs & off porch, a fit person could leap frog to class). So yeah, I'd wake @7:45, brush teeth, and leap frog to 8am class.
Vocab - 100%. Comprehension 100%. Speaking < 0%. My professor refused to believe I was spending at least an hour a day in the language lab, 'til she went & checked the records personally. I CANNOT MAKE FRENCH SOUNDS, CANNOT. Professor gave me an A for 1st semester & let me drop 2nd semester with no consequence, I thank her to this day for that kindness.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Oh Listener James, I bet you've got some killer cereal right there. (It's better than the alternative!)
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:40pm glenn:

ummm. chicken pot pie. i do little ones in clay flower pots. (plug the hole in the bottom first)
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:41pm Gary:

Holly, when I went to France (twice) I was pretty much only able to say "Sil-vous plait, une cafe emporte, c'est possible?"
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:42pm Gary:

When I tried asking for comic books, it came out sounding like I was asking where the boner in the cinema was. (Ou est le bande dessinee was what I was supposed to be saying, but spelled correctly of course)
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:42pm Gary:

Instead, it kept coming out: Ou est le BON DE CINEMA?
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:42pm Gary:

Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:44pm Holly in NC:

Boner in the cinema!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:46pm ndbob:

@Gary wow - didn't realize your mom lived in Corvallis - I went to OSU
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:46pm pacific standard simon:

You're welcome. I went Mouse+, scattered all over the station. Paid my bill today!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:49pm Gary:

Chicken pot pie is now in the oven. Might be able to take a photo of finished "pie" and post it here before the show's fini
  Wed. 3/12/14 7:50pm Jill B.:

Oooops! I almost forgot to tune in. Bad Mom! Good evening everyone!. Back from California and busy cleaning up the garden....getting ready for Spring! Just came inside and checked my email.....thanks for the reminder Gary.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:51pm Gary:

@ndbob, yep, she and my stepfather Hal have lived there for, gosh, several years now
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:51pm Gary:

Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:52pm pacific standard simon:

And greetings from Bainbridge Island, Gary's mom!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:53pm ndbob:

@Jill I mentioned to Gary a few minutes ago I went to OSU - in the mid 70s - haven't been back to Corvallis since then
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:53pm Gary:

Hey, Mom; what island did you and Hal live on?
  Wed. 3/12/14 7:55pm Jill B.:

We lived on the Big Island of Hawaii. Great place to spend a few years!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:56pm carol:

this is great!
  Wed. 3/12/14 7:56pm Jill B.:

Or. did you mean the island in Washington???? It was Lopez Island. And, you are more than welcome for the pledge. That's what Moms are for!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:57pm Gary:

No, Mom, I mean the island off Seattle ...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 7:58pm Gary:

Ah, yes; Lopez! Thanks!
  Wed. 3/12/14 7:58pm Jill B.:

ndbob.....does that stand for North Dakota? Corvallis is a very lovely little town......have you ever returned since your time at OSU?
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:00pm ndbob:

@Jill Yep - I lived in North Dakota for five years - moved to Bloomington Indiana last fall - haven't been back to Corvallis but i lived in Seattle for a couple years
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:00pm pacific standard simon:

Ah, not so close to me -- that's up nearer Bellingham than Seattle, in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:00pm listener james from westwood:

Magnifique first hour!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:01pm Gary:

If so, james, that's because the smell of the chicken pot pie brewing in the oven is boucoup inspiring ... :)
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:02pm Holly in NC:

Hi @Jill B aka @Gary's Mom!
  Wed. 3/12/14 8:03pm Jill B.:

Hey Holly! Hope all is well there in NC!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:05pm JakeGould:

Holly, may your timbers be strong, your pizza be good & your ceilings leak free!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:06pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm glad you got out of North Dakota when you did: thinkprogress.org...
  Wed. 3/12/14 8:07pm Jill B.:

@ndbob.......Gary's sister lives in NoDak! Fracking is everywhere.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:08pm ndbob:

@Doug sheesh - I lived a couple hundred miles away from the oil producing area - @Jill where in ND?
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:09pm listener james from westwood:

The oil industry fouling its surroundings? Well I never! ::drops monocle::
  Wed. 3/12/14 8:09pm Jill B.:

@ndbob.......Dickinson. So not like the West Coast!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:11pm listener james from westwood:

It doubly upsets me that they're burning off a lot of the natural gas that accompanies ND oil exploitation. Polluting and wasteful. But there's no infrastructure to store/pipe it. Or no will to build same.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:11pm ndbob:

ah I've been in Dickinson - but a few years ago
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:12pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:16pm Uncle Michael:

I know what Dutronc track I have my fingers crossed for.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:17pm Doug Schulkind:

My daughter had French toast this morning.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:18pm Gary:

I don't know why, but I didn't include any Hardy ... lots of major holes here. But ... I promise ... le rockin will ensue nonetheless
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:19pm pacific standard simon:

I'm liking this set the best, so far. Old stuff.
  Wed. 3/12/14 8:20pm Jill B.:

@ Doug Schulkind........French toast is close enough! Thank you so much for encouraging Gary to begin his "radio" Odyssey. I think he is really loving this part of his life!

@Gary I went there once, but I wasn't sure it was the same place. I never found any classic French chanteuse CD's there, at least...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:35pm davex:

@Gary: I just thought this song might be particularly apropos to your show: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:35pm Gary:

In their earlier locations I think they had a lot less stuff, and maybe even all Japanese at the time.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:35pm Gary:

Awesome, thanks dave!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:36pm pacific standard simon:

Any Serge Reggiani tonight?
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:37pm Gary:

Another new one to me, PSS --
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:38pm Holly in NC:

@RRN63 - I am simply pathetic. German/French by blood (one side mostly Alsace Lorraine, confusing), and can't make any rolls, trills or gutteral glottals. If I'd been born in France or Germany I'd be mute! Doesn't help that my dad who left Germany at age 7 and subsequently fought for US in WWII refused to teach me German and actually really, really did forget all of his birth language except for liebchen (my dog's name xo) and dumkopf (all purpose insult)
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:38pm Gary:

Cover your ears for this one, Mom!

Holly, you share an ethnic background with the Marx brothers!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:42pm Gary:

I'm guessing there might be a backstory to this song
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:42pm JakeGould:

Then title is a bit vague. Is this twee?
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:43pm Gary:

LOL ... hi, Jake!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 8:43pm davex:

@Gary: One might think so!

I like to be open minded.

The journey is such (a) beautiful (one) from craddle to grave.

I've lost my glasses. It's gonna be a party!

Soldiers have left covered with confetti.

Time is a boat (and) the Earth is a cake.

This world is (like) a garden. Let's hold hands.

The journey is such (a) beautiful (one) from craddle to grave.

(As) we stroll around (the air will be fuelled with) the smell of tar.

In the papers left lying around all as white as a headache

As white as (not-so-)white near build sites sleeping.

Let's eat doughnut galore and fries and chicken.

The journey is such (a) beautiful (one) from craddle to grave.

We shall be watching as the bruised and swollen city is consumed away by fire.

This city is a funfair. I've put on my dress with moir patterns.

My brother is a loser (after all) he is dead.

Let's devour each other in some motel.

There'll be cigarette butts in the sink.

At dawn the injured will cough no more.

We will have a baby (and) we'll hear him cry.

Like boiling water children are all (barking) mad.

Let's go take a walk. How lucky we are to be born!

The journey is such (a) beautiful (one) from craddle to grave.

I've lost my glasses. It's gonna be a party!

Soldiers have left covered with confetti.

yoyo, yeye, :-)
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:05pm northguineahills:

Hey, I just tuned in too!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:09pm listener james from westwood:

Holly, there are quite a few epic performances at that Hoof & Mouth link!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:11pm Gary:

NGH! Welcome aboard!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:11pm Gary:

Hey, thanks for the translation, Simon!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:13pm Ike:

The pop-up player sounds jittery here. I'm switching to the MP3 stream. Ah, that's better.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:14pm Gary:

This next song has nearly 50 versions in iTunes. Can anyone guess what it is?
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:15pm Uncle Michael:

les ska!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:15pm pacific standard simon:

I can't take credit for translating, just finding. I was sucked in by the line about "doughnut galore and fries and chicken". THAT I could understand.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:15pm Uncle Michael:

ca plane pour moi!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:20pm Ike:

Speaking of food, I'm steaming frozen veggie dumplings that I got from Tianjin Dumpling House in Flushing: newyork.seriouseats.com...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:21pm pacific standard simon:

Bet they don't deliver to the west coast.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:21pm Gary:

I need to get out there, Ike!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:22pm hyde:

@Ike god, I love the Golden Mall
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:22pm Uncle Michael:

I wish they shipped!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:22pm davex:

Bet they don't deliver to Germany, either.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:23pm Gary:

hyde, where do you live?
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:26pm hyde:

@Gary I'm in Woodstock during the week, and in SE Massachusetts (on the RI border) on weekends...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:27pm Ike:

@Hyde, I know, right? If I lived a little closer than northern NJ, I'd get out to Flushing more often. It's just like going to China, but quicker, friendlier, less traumatic, and w/cleaner bathrooms. (Not CLEAN bathrooms, but cleanER.)
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:28pm Gary:

Ah, okay. I feel like there needs to be a field trip to outer Queens at some point with some of y'all locals
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:30pm Ike:

Sounds great, Gary.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:30pm hyde:

@Gary @Ike would love to do that. Is the 1$ duck bun place still in Flushing? That was amazing last time I went. Also, the meat on a stick vendors are killer. I also hear rumblings about lots of fantastic Korean places in Queens these days...road trip!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:34pm Gary:

Many Korean places, yes, though I haven't tried them yet. I've got big love for Little Pepper + Grand Szechuan
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:36pm northguineahills:

One thing that sucks about the gas explosion this morning (obviously besides the loss of life, the wounded, loss of property, etc), is that one of the stores was a new used piano store that also fixed up old pianos. There can't be too many of those left around in East Harlem.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:36pm Gary:

You guys should email me ... I think you can do that via my profile here? We'll set something up for when the weather turns warm ... which please god will be soon
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:37pm Gary:

former co-worker Marcella also suggested this band

I've only done Flushing when I had to go there for work and had down time.

Aw yiss ... if I ever become president, this Air cut will play as I enter for the State of the Union address. My approval ratings will either be 94% or an imaginary number.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:38pm northguineahills:

Playing the hits, Gary. nostalgia!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:38pm Ike:

I once went to a great Chinese-Korean place called Ming Chan Dong in Flushing. I wonder if it's still there. It had GIANT kimchi buns. We only got in because I brought a Chinese speaker with me, though: cardboardrobot.livejournal.com...
Haven't tried much Korean out there beyond that.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:38pm Uncle Michael:

Antti Raanta. I just like typing that name.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:39pm hyde:

@gary sounds good. I plan on coming to the city sometime soonish on a day when I'm not waiting for the pouring rain to turn to sleet imminently (p.s. I sort of forgot about this Air tune, thanx for the reminder)
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:40pm northguineahills:

Turns it up to 11....
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:40pm Gary:

I feel like I've heard it before? I mean, I must have
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:40pm Uncle Michael:

I only just discovered that Kansas City has an amazing Asian grocery (for Kansas City). The food here is dreadful. It's a good thing I cook.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:42pm hyde:

@Ike oh, damn. I sort of love that you need someone fluent to get in the door. Last time I went to Manhattan chinatown I went to a Fujian place where we had to talk our way in because the place was filled with old guys who I think were bummed out because with us there they couldn't smoke cigarettes inside.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:42pm hyde:

@Uncle Michael plus, Winstead's closed! but there's always barbecue.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:43pm Uncle Michael:

Winstead's closed? That's news to me!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:46pm hyde:

@Uncle Michael y'know, that's what a friend of mine from KC told me some time back. But googling seems to say otherwise. Perhaps rumors of its demise were greatly exaggerated?
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:46pm Ike:

As for accented letters and characters with diacriticals, I just hunt them down around the net and then copy and paste them.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:47pm Uncle Michael:

In '85-'86 I lived directly across the street from the original location.
  Wed. 3/12/14 9:48pm Jill B.:

Thanks for the great show tonight Gary. I became so engrossed in listening that when the phone rang I had trouble moving from your show to the phone.....couldn't place the person who was calling, totally confused on my part......it was the music!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:48pm hyde:

@UM I think maybe that the original location is the one that closed
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:50pm Uncle Michael:

Nope...it's right where I left it! It's the on on Emmanuel Cleaver...though that street was called Ward Parkway when I lived there.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:50pm Gary:

Was it the music, Mom, or was it the Visions of Chicken Pot Pie with Biscuits on Top (Instead of Pie Crust)?
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:51pm Uncle Michael:

The location they had here in Topeka didn't last too long.
  Wed. 3/12/14 9:51pm Jill B.:

It could of been the combination of the two!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:52pm hyde:

@UM hmm, well I'm glad to be wrong. I only went to a conference in KC once, and I ate at that place a couple times.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:52pm davex:

Great show from beginning to end, Gary, taking me well into the night here...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:53pm northguineahills:

Ok, Gary, Cargo Culte. You can marry me, as long as my gf doesn't mind ;)
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:53pm Gary:

Thanks for hanging out, Dave -- I know it's late for you there!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:53pm Ike:

@Hyde, ha, yeah, those smokers in those Fujian restaurants on Eldridge, eesh! I'm not crazy about that, so I don't usually explore those much.

Uh oh, Ming Chan Dong may have changed hands... or chefs.... since 2011. Oh well.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:53pm Uncle Michael:

We ate at Arthur Bryant's on Sunday but not at the original location.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:54pm Gary:

I've already pledged my love to the chicken pot pie, NGH!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:54pm Uncle Michael:

Loved the show tonight, Gary. This track is great.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:55pm Gary:

Thanks, UM .... goes well with ice cream, too :)
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:57pm hyde:

@UM the non original Arthur Bryant's was where I ate all my other KC meals!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:58pm northguineahills:

Thanks Gary, awesome show as per usual!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:58pm Uncle Michael:

The one by the racetrack?

This show = cool beans.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 10:01pm hyde:

@UM oh wait, I think I went to Jack Stack not Arthur Bryant's.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 10:01pm Gary:

Mik and Earrie! Thanks! Hyde! Michael! Everyone! ... have a great night, y'all!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 10:02pm Gary:

Thanks, Ike!
  Wed. 3/12/14 10:07pm Steven:

What was that Dutronc cover of?
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 10:10pm Gary:

Les Cactus? I'm not sure if it was a cover or not ... will have to do a bit of research and post here if/when I find anything ...
  Wed. 3/12/14 10:14pm Steven:

Sorry, maybe before or after Dutronc - the tune with the very fast rhythm guitar...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 10:18pm Gary:

Mareva Galanter did 7h du Matin before the Dutronc, and that I think was originally recorded by Jacqueline Taieb. But my guess is you mean the song after Ductronc, which was Ca Plane Pour Moi. The original was recorded by Plastic Bertrand. (Although he did not, it was revealed later, actually sing it himself)
  Wed. 3/12/14 10:45pm Steven:

Gary, thank you, yes Plastic Bertrand 1977. Long ago and far away...
