Nope, missed it. I don't get out much. I've got too much music downloading to do.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 9:30am Uncle Michael:

Doug who plays guitar on that first Merle song. Sounds so similar to a John Stewart toon on California Bloodlines. Is it Fred Carter?
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 9:33am Uncle Michael:

Red Voelkert, maybe?
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 9:36am Uncle Michael:

I think you might be right, Brian.

I am out the door but people, y'all should pledge at least a mouse for that Merle, because imho it's at least as as important as Hank W's 40. Love Merle, that cantankerous coot.

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

@ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ
That HTML work (or some hack self-taught version of it) it all I've ever known.

But...if you go back and look at the visual history of WFMU's online playlists, you'll see that mine were the first to look all purdy, with links and images and stuff. Now, they're just middle of the pack.

Greetings Andrew in Waterloo! Thanks for all your helpings out this marathon!
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 9:43am glenn:

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 9:47am Gary:

I think if you drink enough beer, you'll find that drawing is rather easy
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 9:48am Jeff Golick:

Doug: Hi! You'll teach willing students how to make such purty gifs? I can pay in mp3s...

Oh, also: MARATHON!
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 9:48am Uncle Michael:

I'd like to hear a vocal harmony trio made up of Bill Callahan, John Doe and Leo Kottke.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

@glenn
I'm waxing poetic? Maybe? Nope, I can't beat that.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 9:49am Brian in UK:

Wish I could sing like Marvyn Gaye.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 9:49am Alex In Illinois:

Right now I am wearing 2 headsets. One is for the meeting that I am attending, and the other is for Give The Drummer Some. Once the meating is over and I have heated my oatmeal in the science oven, I will do some pledging.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 9:50am Andrew Waterloo:

@Jeff Animated Gifs are very easy. I started making my own after reading a short Gimp tutorial.

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:07am Stanley:

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:09am Webhamster Henry:

The first show netcast by WFMU was MAC's Antique Phonograph Music Program - to make sure there was an established scratchiness aesthetic from the very start.

When WFMU bought its license and moved to Jersey City, I was really excited at the prospect for several audio streams to be running. There weren't enough hours in the week to transmit all the WFMU goodness! And it's worked out very well with the GTDS Stream, and there's room fro growth! The new performance space is another expansion that will be very exciting this year!
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:25am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

  Fri. 2/28/14 10:25am van:

Oh, you're sinful. DEFINITELY sinful.

;)
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:27am Artie:

If commercial radio is insider art, I'd just as soon hang out here in the yard.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:28am duke:

In terms of music, I agree with Duke Ellington: There are two kinds of music. Good music, and the other kind. I think that goes with all art. Outsider art is often good art made by someone not in the right club.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:30am holland oats:

ok so my wally tax joke was a bit obtuse - as a frequent commenter i'd like to apologize for never making any damn sense
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:30am Uncle Michael:

If someone tells me they're presenting outsider art, it doesn't offend me. It tells me that they're sharing something with me that I won't find coming from the either the pop-culture or academic factories. It's clumsy shorthand but it can be useful clumsy shorthand.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

Well said, duke. WFMU's genre-oblierating approach makes it hard for those "clubs" to be considered with any validity (or a straight face).
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:31am Uncle Michael:

We're used to it, holland!
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

@holland oats
Just as long as Alex in Illinois is not devouring you at his meeting. (See, I can get obtuse, too.)

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

I would be a miserable bum, that's for sure, Van.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:43am duke:

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

There are no coincidences, duke, but there are happy accidents. Blessedly.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 10:47am Uncle Michael:

Sometimes the pattern is more obvious.

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:00am listener james from westwood:

ndbob, agreed; i felt a real pang when doug mentioned it.
worth noting: for a pledge show, doug's playing a goodly chunk of music. at public radio stations, all you get is clumsy banter. fmu asks, but it keeps on playing the sweet tunes.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:03am earrie:

Picking up on the categories-talk in this growing age of big databases. Categories don't scale well at all. Talking math, here . Category counts, amounts, and their definitions- they all change with scale. And yet db-jerks calculate, extrapolate and interpolate and arrive at false conclusions. 'All blanks blank.'
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:06am duke:

I hate public radio fund drives. They seem to run all year. I enjoy the FMU marathons. There's really no comparison to the kind of thing public radio or TV does.

During a fund drive, they said "If we don't get x dollars in the next half hour, we won't be able to have the show." My son started crying. I thought "screw this."
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:10am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

...and the other public radio station in dc is "classical" which I'm fine with but they play the same 15 pieces of music overandoverandoverandover. I've never given them a dime cuz they infuriate me.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:10am Uncle Michael:

I hope you told them how fucked up threatening children was.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:11am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

holy crap got the letters backwards--I'm sleep deprived.

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:12am Alex In Illinois:

What Doug said explains why I have never seen this type of interactive playlist on any other on line radio station.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:12am bobdc:

Totally thrilled! I was hoping to win the Dust to Digital one. I bought "Goodbye Babylon" when it was their only product, and I especially love "How Low Can You Go."
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:13am ndbob:

Same here Bob
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

It is a treasure, bobdc! Thank you so much.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:13am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

every stupid show they have is just a bunch of dorks giggling at each other. ACH! Bad vibes man, bad vibes...
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:13am Alex In Illinois:

I stopped supporting my local NPR station when the got rid of Afropop Worldwide and Thistle and Shamrock, as well as a some of the locally done music shows.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:15am glenn:

maybe it's a canadian thing. i kinda like n.p.r.. i'll listen to it on road trips, as long as i'm within 20 miles of the border.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

NPR is slowly jettisoning most music program and replacing it with... talk.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:16am Uncle Michael:

NPR should have a show as good as "As It Happens."
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:17am Alex In Illinois:

When my Local NPR station got rid of a show called "Mambo Express", I looked up the DJ in the Chicago phone book, called him and asked what happened to his show. He was glad to hear that peopl were missing his show. I think his show is now on a suburban college station.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:18am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

I don't mind some of the news reporting (although the "and now for another view of Hitler" thing drives me nuts) and some of the science shows but all the rest is crap.

Finally awake (3 hours before you, so don't judge).
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:18am glenn:

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:20am glenn:

i can tell y'all right now that every media outlet in canada is on high alert, waiting for the inevitable arrest of rob ford.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:20am pacific standard simon:

Pacifica went through a programming meltdown in '90s, with staff strikes and legal wrangles. They used to be great.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:20am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

I get tired of the preaching to the choir bent of As It Happens too. That's why I don't watch Rachel Madow--I agree with her but don't need to watch a bunch of people nodding there heads and enthusiastically agreeing with each other.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:21am earrie:

Lots of good science programming on cbc.ca/quirks.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:21am Alex In Illinois:

I like "This American Life" with Ira Glass, and that their news occasionally does things like exposing David Barton's latest book as full of fallacies, but there is not much more NPR for me. I wish there were another station to get all of the music shows that NPR keeps getting rid of.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:22am Carmichael:

Good morning Doug and devotees. Glenn, if Ford gets arrested, who will consume all the chicke wings and crack in Toronto?

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:25am duke:

@ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ I agree about the preaching to the choir. I have been trying to read/listen to the other side more - WSJ etc. However, Fox(Faux) News pushes me over the edge.

Cyrus!
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:27am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

I have friends that swear by Pacifica and I'm as lefty as they come but I get the willies when I listen to it. It's like tuning in just cuz you know they'll tell you what you want to hear.

@duke: I loath WSJ and am convinced that nobody really reads it, they just like to display it on their front porch
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:28am listener james from westwood:

w00t! thanks, jonathan, and all pledgers! (and RIP cyrus from "the warriors")
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:30am listener james from westwood:

the WSJ had some good writers before murdoch took it over. now many of them are with bloomberg news or the NYT, and factual stories carry a greater slant. and the editorial page, already thuggish, has become as trollish as the rest of the news corp empire.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:31am pacific standard simon:

@ ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ - Yeah, that's the kind of stuff they got more into. They were always that way, but they had some kind of cleansing of more diverse elements.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

THANK YOU Jonathon for your Mouse of Today pledge!!!!
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:34am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

Everyone who subscribes to WSJ in my neighborhood leaves them sitting on the porch, sidewalk until they start to rot in the plastic. Which is pretty much where it belongs. Why would you trust a bunch of pro-business yahoos to tell you what's going on in the world? Hoooo boy, I need some more coffee...with whiskey in it...screw the coffee..
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:36am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

man I wanted to spread my pledges out over 2 weeks but I fear I'm already running out of dough...
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:36am Alex In Illinois:

When Pacifica first appeared on the scene, it was refreshing to have something that was the polar opposite of all of the right wing junk, and not afraid to air what NPR was too afraid to air. I am not sure how reliable my memory is, but I thought I heard an interview on Pacifica a few weeks BEFORE 9/11/2001 about an attack by al Queda likely to occur and how President Bush should be preparing for such a possibility
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:36am ndbob:

The WSJ is a great paper in a lot of ways - just ignore the editorial page
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:36am Stanley:

I just got back from the river 'bank' with some cash.
I think I know where there might be some more.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:37am pacific standard simon:

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:38am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

Doug, I chose the African Twang as one of my premiums. Can't wait to spin it.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:41am Brian in UK:

The Funkees sounds familiar from another premium.
Wow, 19% to go.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:41am ndbob:

@Alex I like the NPR hourly news, but a lot of NPR coverage is repetitive and bland - and I'm still annoyed that the took of "Talk of the Nation" leading to the demise of "The Political Junkie"

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:43am Carmichael:

@bob, me too. I really don't like most of the new shows they recently started, and I miss the old ones like Talk of the Nation. And no more Terry Gross! Ted Talks sucks, and really, a show about cooking?!?
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

  Fri. 2/28/14 11:44am Dean:

The reputation of the CSM is indeed one of the paradoxes of modern media. For all of Mary Baker Eddy's weirdness, though, you gotta hand it to a church (organization, whatever) that runs storefront reading rooms.

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:48am listener james from westwood:

i like a number of the npr podcasts, such as sci fri, the moth, radiolab, and planet money. the latter was a great aid during the financial crisis a few years back. car talk turns everything i see red red red with blood.

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:49am pacific standard simon:

@Dean - I know! Our main street has one of those reading rooms and, like all CS reading rooms, it looks like the coolest old school relaxing place to read a book ever. If I had a million bucks, I'd give half of it to FMU, then hire whoever designs CS reading rooms to design a new den for me.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:49am northguineahills:

Unrelated to African twang, country songbooks were apparently popular in today's Zimbabwe & Zambia in the 30s-40s for some reason.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 11:49am ndbob:

I listen to that at times, but to the Science magazine and Nature podcasts regularly - a little more rigorous.
