Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:07pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:08pm Gary:

Awesome opener.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:08pm Uncle Michael:

The "Dad, can you come get me?" look? Yes.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:12pm Doug Schulkind:

Sorry I forgot to link to your playlist in my comment, Uncle M. I was all distracted by the various excuses I could use to explain why I forgot.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:13pm Uncle Michael:

Man, I sure can understand that.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:14pm Uncle Michael:

I pity anyone not hearing this track.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:16pm Stanley:

Hi Michael. Rushed home to toon in.
Now listening and swaying a little from side to side.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:16pm Uncle Michael:

Hi Stanley...pull up a bean bag.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:17pm pacific standard simon:

I pity anyone who can't find the Hinky Dinky Playlist -- even with BOTH hands tied behind their back.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:19pm listener james from westwood:

oh, jay, you're gonna blow an o-ring doing that!
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:19pm pacific standard simon:

The radio edit of -- you know -- THAT song.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:20pm Uncle Michael:

Jay needs more fiber.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:20pm Uncle Michael:

The Bonzos, Simon?
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:21pm still b/p:

Are those guys in the picture all riding on the family-size Segway?
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:22pm Uncle Michael:

I think that picture illustrates the value of the '70s man-perm.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:23pm pacific standard simon:

One thing I appreciate in a true artiste is a fine appreciation of bodily functions.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:24pm pacific standard simon:

My father had that curly one, to cover his thin spot.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:27pm pacific standard simon:

Uncle Michael's guest DJ/broadcast partner during the marathon will be his milkman.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:29pm Gary:

@PSS My vote's for Freddy the Flute
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:30pm Gary:

Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:31pm Mike East:

hehehe...Cluster Pluck
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:31pm pacific standard simon:

Gary, you're a sick man.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:32pm Uncle Michael:

Mother pluckers.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:33pm efd:

Clearly these gents are all graduates of the Kenny Rogers Quick-Pickin' Fun-Strummin' Home Guitar Course.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:34pm Uncle Michael:

Yes...efd. Yes.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:36pm still b/p:

Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:37pm Stanley:

David Essex.
Michael, you slay me sometimes.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:40pm pacific standard simon:

There is a generation that adores "Rock On" -- other generations do not understand us.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:41pm Uncle Michael:

It's a centerpiece of my cultural life. A touchstone.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:43pm pacific standard simon:

On one of the Playboy After Dark DVDs, there's a performance of "Hitchcock Railway" by Joe Cocker. He totally knocks it out of the park.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:44pm Stanley:

Davis Essex and other 'top-of-the-poppers' just didn't cut it with us teenage cools back then. That said, nothing wrong with it from a forty years later standpoint.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:47pm pacific standard simon:

There's the rub, Stanley -- I've never been cool in my life. I still have a VERY scratchy 45 of "Rock On".
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:48pm Stanley:

@simon - On Bell Records, if I recall.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:52pm Stanley:

Maybe not.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:53pm pacific standard simon:

If you think I'm going to rummage through my records to confirm that, think again.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:53pm efd:

oh hello.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:56pm pacific standard simon:

Speaking of guitar obsessions -- much as I like a good Tele lick, mine's for chunky Gibson SG chords. Alice Cooper, Steppenwolf, things like that there.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:56pm Stanley:

@simon - I got all confused with that other chart topper of the day 'Seasons in the Sun'
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:56pm Uncle Michael:

My obsessions change like the weather.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:57pm glenn:

i'm sending you a great james burton track, pufnstuf dude.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:57pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:58pm Mike East:

I think this is on the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack. I like that Pharrell Williams
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:59pm Stanley:

Ooh, this is a lovely record I've not heard before.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:59pm Mike East:

he had a song in the first one, too
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 12:59pm glenn:

hey, this pharrell is not bad. i have to confess that i don't hate blurred lines.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:00pm pacific standard simon:

My memory wants to say RCA, Stanley, but who knows. I saved most of my singles from the '60s-'80s, but that doesn't mean I use 'em anymore.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:00pm Mike East:

actually it looks like he did most of the music for those movies.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:01pm Uncle Michael:

How far ahead of its time was this Kevin Ayers?
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:02pm listener james from westwood:

was briefly detained by a pair of my neighbors' dogs. we brake for pooches.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:03pm Uncle Michael:

detained and released?
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:04pm pacific standard simon:

Pretty far ahead. I keep hoping Jeff & Jeff will play "pisser dans un violon".
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:06pm pacific standard simon:

Is this the original? I've only heard Dr. Feelgood's version.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:07pm Uncle Michael:

Yes...and the same was true for me.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:14pm listener james from westwood:

released only after i gave them both a good scratching.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:15pm listener james from westwood:

heh, a sid & marty kroft cut would be a natural. :)
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:15pm Uncle Michael:

I suffered a humiating stop and frisk at the hands of my cat last night.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:16pm Stanley:

Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:16pm listener james from westwood:

that cat was blatantly profiling.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:17pm pacific standard simon:

I suffered a disgusting hairball ejection episode at the foot of the bed last night.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:18pm Uncle Michael:

did you find it with your foot?
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:18pm listener james from westwood:

to be clear, this was from the cat, right? :)
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:18pm Stanley:

@simon - you shouldn't lick yourself so much
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:18pm SeanG:

Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:19pm pacific standard simon:

Uh, yes.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

melody: thrice-cycled
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:19pm Mike East:

haha - like what you did there
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:20pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:20pm still b/p:

Little stop and Little Friskies, UM?
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:21pm listener james from westwood:

my dog wasn't much of a regurgitator, but he was an inveterate scooter.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

he required more (cough) "expression."
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:23pm pacific standard simon:

@james - You should have tied a roller skate to his butt and driven him mad.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:24pm earrie:

My dog was neither a scuttle-but nor a yakker. But I can still smell her undeniably-dog exhalations when she crawls onto my lap in dreams.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:27pm Uncle Michael:

That's so sweet. Well...not the breath so much...but...
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:29pm earrie:

When dog breath is the sweetest..
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:29pm pacific standard simon:

Thought it was a Double-Jay show there for a minute.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:32pm glenn:

Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:36pm Mike East:

Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:38pm SeanG:

I wonder what's up with the Unabomber these days?
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:40pm pacific standard simon:

He's probably plotting against WFMU, for going all computer age.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:41pm SeanG:

maybe he's tuned into FMU--hahaha
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:46pm βrian:

Love that fuzzy guitar voice.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:47pm Uncle Michael:

I love dual harmonicas!
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 1:49pm pacific standard simon:

I think the dried banana peels are kicking in now.

Permanent banana-peel-as-mind-altering-opportunity recall association:
Don Martin cartoon page in Mad Magazine -- scruffy shirtless adult hippie scrapes banana peel material into fry pan, discards peel, slips on peel, smashes head, psychedelic visuals bloom from head.

Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 2:01pm Uncle Michael:

I don't, and for that matter every time I see a Tom Jones greatest hits record I look to see if C&F is on it and inevitably it isn't. So I'm still keeping an eye out for that one, let alone the Meek version.

Speaking of editing for fun -- did you see the thing an editor did for Fallon's show of NBC's Brian Williams' newscast words and phrases cut together to deliver Rapper's Delight? Pretty damn funny...a laborious effort with good payoff.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 2:46pm Uncle Michael:

Why can't rock bass always sound like this? I ask you.
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 2:46pm Uncle Michael:

I've skipped all the links to that because I didn't know it was made that way. Now I will check it out!
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 2:47pm Brian in UK:

UM good work on Albert Hammond jr? Overlooked? There was so much good pop when I grew up, I took it for granted.
  Fri. 2/21/14 2:48pm ccrides:

That was great still b/p!!!...They brought Lester Holt into the mix toward the end and really capped it off!!!...hehehe...:)O(:..
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 2:49pm Uncle Michael:

I liked Albert's singles as a kid but I had no idea what he'd written for other people.

Joe Meek was a visionary...a paranoid, tone-deaf, homicidal visionary.

Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 2:57pm Brian in UK:

I did not realise until reading listeners' comments and hearing DJs sets how much UK music was loved over your way. Perhaps it is only in the realm of FMU listeners. Hope not.
Good luck next week. You'll love it. We love you.

Talking about collectible vinyl...I've had a stereo copy of the album 'What Now My Love' by Mitch Ryder for years and years and had never come across it anywhere...last summer I found another copy at a garage sale...not quite in good as condition as my original but that really blew my mind, anyway!!!...BTW...never sell and decent vinyl on Ebay unless you state 'No Returns'...people like to make a ne copy off the analog stuf and then return it saying it was not as described???...:)O(:..
Avatar Fri. 2/21/14 2:59pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah...you lot have made your mark over here, Brian.

Thanks everyone...see you next time!
