There was a rumor, circa the peak of Don't Worry Be Happy's popularity (1989?), that Bobby McF. had blown his brains out. Not sure if this rumor was local to my high school or if it got more traction.

there was also a rumor that two bergen catholic h.s. students who went into nyc in the mid-80s to pick up a hooker (a) got beaten up by a bat-wielding pimp (b) got beaten up by a pimp in a batman outfit, or (c) got beaten up and sexually assaulted by a pimp in a batman outfit. people as far north as boston asked me about this rumor when i mentioned i was from northern nj. again, all pre-internet. as with the simpsons' kids' impressions of who lived in the burlesque house, the rumors were legion and recombinant.
