On an entirely different subject, I just heard Soft Machine's "Bundles" album the other day for the first time. Gained a whole new appreciation for Allan Holdsworth.
  Sun. 2/16/14 10:15pm LovecraftDude888:

I have Vol. 2 bought that 10 years ago and wasn't knocked out with Soft Machine. I tried. I liked it ok but didn't destroy me.
  Sun. 2/16/14 10:17pm Ralphine:

Bundles is very different from Vol. 2.

no R. Wyatt for starters. I'll give them a 2nd chance I guess.
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 10:18pm Droll:

Am I the only one who applauds or snaps when listening to jazz records at home? Jazz solos always sound wrong without some audience reaction at the end of one solo and beginning of the next.
  Sun. 2/16/14 10:18pm Ralphine:

If you have Spotify, give the first part of Hazard Profile a listen.

man, I'd pulled out some old tapes a number of years ago and ever get that screechy oxidizing noise on cheap old CBS tapes? that is horrid torture.... those tapes were so cheap and shitty. amazing they lasted 1 year.
  Sun. 2/16/14 10:38pm LovecraftDude888:

but I have old maxells chromes that I made myself that still play like first time!
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 10:39pm Mdurek(The_Use):

Man, I remember using a de-magnetizer when I was like 16 and my girlfriend laughing at me because she thought it was snake oil
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 10:40pm Mdurek(The_Use):

NOT snake oil! Man that was fun, the slow motion demagnetization
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 10:40pm Mdurek(The_Use):

Using a demagnizer properly feels almost godly
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 10:40pm Droll:

12539, Of course tapes never skip like that, cassettes have their own unique sound after being crinkled when they get wrapped around a capstan. And of course the hiss, and muffling from faulty bias and type settings.
  Sun. 2/16/14 10:43pm LovecraftDude888:

i never bothered with one.

Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 10:47pm Mdurek(The_Use):

Man we could use that right about now in Jersey
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 10:50pm GetOutOfDarkness:

Ok slightly off topic but since this an station based in Jersey City I figured maybe some of you may know. I'm thinking of going to the store Iris Records, which is in Jersey City and is about a half mile from the Path station, does anyone know if its a generally safe area?
  Sun. 2/16/14 10:52pm P-90:

@Mdurek: legend has it that when student protesters occupied the administration buildings at the Columbia campus in 1968, they brought industrial-strength magnets with them to de-gauss the reels of IBM magnetic tape that contained the student draft registration records
-- a stone-age, electro-mechanical form of what we would call "hacking" here in the 21st Century
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 10:56pm Whooda:

I grew up in a TV repair shop, my dad had a de-gaussing ring, about 12" diameter ring he would pass in front of the picture tube and it made the greatest psychedelic patterns.
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 10:57pm Mdurek(The_Use):

@P-90 Wow! They did that in a movie, right? In the early 90s. Crazy
  Sun. 2/16/14 10:57pm LovecraftDude888:

heard of Iris recently, never been there. I haven't been to ought but Hoboken in years...I think that area of JC is like, ok. Not great, not really dangerous. Paterson is a lot worse....
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 10:59pm GetOutOfDarkness:

Ok thanks LCDude
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 10:59pm Ike:

@G.O.O.D., I've never been to Iris, but that whole Grove St. area is fairly nice these days. There's a Barcade on Newark Ave. and a bookstore-cafe just opened there too. Not at all dangerous from what I've seen.
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 10:59pm Mdurek(The_Use):

@Getoutofdarkness , It's fine!
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 11:00pm Mdurek(The_Use):

If you don't slip on all the ice, that is
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:01pm LovecraftDude888:

I think J.C. or most of it was pretty seedy or dangerous in the 80s back..after that, most of it upscaled to some degree but not all of it. My friend S.T. Joshi used to live there on edge of Hoboken years ago...it was ok. I never got hassled.
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:02pm LovecraftDude888:

i recall one winter walking from PATH HOboken to JC and was a solid sheet of ice all the feckin way. Scary.
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:03pm P-90:

@posing naked with snake: hard to believe that was not THE direct inspiration for Richard Avedon's famous 1981 photograph of the teenaged Nastassia Kinki posing naked with a 7 foot python wrapped around her
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 11:03pm Whooda:

That Tangerine Dream sounds like the archetype to all musical shorthand used to introduce scenes of drug induced hippy culture.
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:04pm LovecraftDude888:

P90...oh yeah, I remember that pic. Love Nastassia and Klaus, too that kook
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 11:04pm Mdurek(The_Use):

@lovecraft , almost did that tonight, I was carrying groceries and a massive can of cafe Bustelo, so I just kept running forward. 10ft later, recovered...no fall. People gotta be careful though, they are all out of salt
     Sun. 2/16/14 11:05pm 12539:

Roberto! Dave, your show often makes me miss Tonic.
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 11:05pm Mdurek(The_Use):

The ice upset my balance, and the gigantic cafe bustelo can kept pulling me to the sidewalk, but I ran to keep the center of balance on my feet! Close call.
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:05pm Dave Mandl:

@P-90: You may be right. That photo is pretty similar.
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:06pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: Hair tonic!
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 11:06pm Mdurek(The_Use):

Yes Dave , nice latin flavours tonight!
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:09pm LovecraftDude888:

saved by the Bustelo. i think Nastassja was 20 when that pic was taken or 19 maybe. snake porn
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:09pm P-90:

@whoo: As I recall, the problem with playing with a magnet and a CRT picture tube TV screen, dragging the phosphors to make those psychedelic patterns, was that it was tricky to drag them all back to where they belonged and make the "rainbows" go away completely, so you could watch the Dean Martin show and see it clearly (Lennon Sisters, anyone?)
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:14pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@P-90 - Yeah, we found that car speakers had powerful magnets that were good for that.
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 11:15pm Whooda:

Exactly P-90 I seem to remember that the ring was brought out as some sort of 'last resort' in attempt to save a hopeless situation.
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:15pm LovecraftDude888:

Yelp folks seem to be saying downtown JC south area near WFMU etc. is coming along.....Legal Grounds Coffee is highly thought of. Guess it's becoming new Hoboken since Hoboken is now not the olde Hoboken no mo. Trust me on that one.

www.yelp.com...
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 11:16pm Mdurek(The_Use):

I started telling people to stay away from JC! Keep our rent lower :D
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 11:17pm Mdurek(The_Use):

j/k but if it turns into Hoboken we are leaving! All love for the hobokenites but it's pricey now
     Sun. 2/16/14 11:18pm 12539:

Dave, is the whole Takemitsu disc as luscious as this?
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:20pm LovecraftDude888:

r u kidding Hoboken has been absurd for 25 years almost! at least. or 20 anyway. really 25 but now it's even more absurd.
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 11:21pm Mdurek(The_Use):

Good riddance! I just hate when I get on the path after 11 on a weekend, and it exhales human beings and waits at HOB station for like 10 mins. What's up with that!
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:22pm P-90:

sorry, baby-boomers, I am reminded that the Lennon Sisters were on TV with Lawrence Welk, it was "The Goldiggers" girl vocal group on the Dino show
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:23pm LovecraftDude888:

Mdurek..ha, sounds like the PATH. I haven't even been on a PATH in ages....just never get out there much. Last time was in Hoboken I drove and parked for a final hurrah at Maxwells...urgh. ----that is a weird Teardrops collection...odds and ends weirdness
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:23pm LovecraftDude888:

Everybody Wants to Shag the T. Explodes is also great....
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 11:24pm Mdurek(The_Use):

Well thanks guys, thanks dave! Bless this candle of non commercial non homogenized music
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:25pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: Yeah, I'd say that piece is pretty typical of the collection.
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:26pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks, @MD!
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:26pm LovecraftDude888:

ha you can get a J. Cope "Gold" DVD of the videos....then someone mistaking it on Amazon for the Mission UK DVD silly billies
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:27pm P-90:

@Dave M.: yeah, bless this candle etc. like the man said
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 11:37pm Droll:

DM, How many times are you on for the 'thon? 3 x Sundays, plus guesting? 4-5 total?
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:40pm P-90:

@Dave: who are you co-hosting with this time? That's still a State Secret?
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:41pm Dave Mandl:

I usually do only one show because I'm pre-empted the second Sunday, but this year (because we're starting on a Sunday) I'm doing two shows. That's just my show...
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:41pm Dave Mandl:

...I'm also MC'ing for Fabio and Bob Brainen.
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:41pm Dave Mandl:

...I think Fabio the first week and Brainen the second week.
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:43pm Dave Mandl:

...My MCs are Kurt and Bill Mac.
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:43pm P-90:

o, lucky you, the extra Marathon day gives you a "bonus" pitching shift, should be fun (for us anyway)
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 11:44pm Droll:

Cool -- sounds like fun DJ pairings. Why are you playing drums for H&M? Aren't you "just a bassist"? Give up the throne to Bryce, he's a fuckin' monster on tubs!
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:45pm Dave Mandl:

Yes, bass is my real instrument, but I'm reasonable on the drums, and I like playing the H&M material on drums.
     Sun. 2/16/14 11:45pm 12539:

Co-host schedule:
www.wfmu.org...
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:46pm Dave Mandl:

All the drummers in the band are great (except me). Dennis Diken, Irwin, EFD...
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:52pm P-90:

@Primo! those four are all pairings I'll be looking forward to, great choices. Of course one is curious, do you get to make suggestions, have input, or does Ken just sit down with a bottle of scotch and a legal pad and decide on the pairings ("duets"?)...

Also curious, I think it's come up before, but are you a Fender guy, or something else, bass-wise?
Avatar Sun. 2/16/14 11:54pm Droll:

Thanks 12539! Irwin & Clay are hosting together for three hours?! That's gonna be an interesting one.

I can't believe the show's almost over already... Thanks for all the horns tonight. I'll start writing new "bass is my real instrument" jokes so I have them ready for your performance in a few weeks.
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:54pm P-90:

@12539: thanks for the sched, last time I looked it it still wasn't posted
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:55pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Oh boy, I can't wait for those...
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:56pm LovecraftDude888:

as long as it's not recorder.....
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:56pm Dave Mandl:

@P-90: People sign up for other DJs' shows depending on when they're available, etc. Some DJs work out pairings among themselves. Ken puts the final schedule together taking all that stuff into account.
     Sun. 2/16/14 11:57pm 12539:

I heard the co-hosts are determined by months of intensive Arbitron focus group action.
Avatar    Sun. 2/16/14 11:57pm Dave Mandl:

@P-90: I've only owned one bass in my life, a 1974 sunburst Fender Precision. It's wonderful.
     Sun. 2/16/14 11:58pm 12539:

Thanks, Dave, and good luck with your train.
  Sun. 2/16/14 11:59pm P-90:

Thanks for another thrilling episode, looking forward to the Marathon, you n Fabio n Brainen n Mac n Kurt....!
have a great week
Avatar Mon. 2/17/14 12:00am Droll:

12539, Yes, they're still using the focus group that came up with "Wine Coolers" in the late 80's. Good team. They paired Clay and Irwin!

DM, I'm coming for your 40 year old rig. That's mine, buddy. Keep the drums, I want the P-bass.
  Mon. 2/17/14 12:00am LovecraftDude888:

wine coolers..oof.
