A reflexive, traveling radio production. Each show is spontaneous as a backroom deal, a different guest a different location every week. Two hours of trading records with friends, programming without a prepared playlist. Actually, it goes like this: Jesse Kaminsky travels around Providence and the world with a portable radio show, visits a different person every week and makes spontaneous musical exchanges. We agree to call it radio.

@PSS - that damn bear is scary as heck.

Re. the dj siblings - I'm sure I'm not the only person unwillingly singing an Elton John song at the moment...
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 7:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey Holly, if your governor ever walks into the grocery where you happen to be working, please tell him "Shove off, wanker!" for me.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 7:08pm northguineahills:

back to the boards...

@Holly, do you have a pharo-larynx/sinus infection (I missed most of Doug's comment's board)?
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 7:09pm Gary:

Cooking is happening now at my place. As much as I hate to do this, I'm going to have to take off my awesome headphones and plug in my crappy speakers
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 7:09pm northguineahills:

Cool, Alvin Curran! (first typed Calvin urran)
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 7:10pm northguineahills:

I'm about to make some gluwein, but nothing planned on the solid edibles front.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 7:11pm Doug Schulkind:

I'll take credit for all the cool music. Jesse selected all the crappy music. (Oh who'm I kidding. It's all cool.)
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 7:12pm Gary:

Wait, whoa, what's this awesome guitar action?
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 7:13pm Holly in NC:

@Doug, I now only work for myself, but I ever run into our asswipe governor I will gladly spit on him. Though he keeps himself holed up in his mancave to avoid protests/constituents.
@ngh - I believe so.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 7:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Your governor gives ass wiping a bad name.

Must have!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 7:29pm Doug Schulkind:

@northguineahills
From Wiki: "In 1979, Fahey sold Takoma to Chrysalis Records, owned by Terry Ellis and Chris Wright, which had artists such as Blondie, Pat Benatar, and Huey Lewis.[3] Jon Monday continued as General Manager of the label for Chrysalis until 1982 when Chrysalis sold the Takoma catalog. During the Chrysalis years, Takoma released albums by The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Maria Muldaur, Canned Heat, Mike Bloomfield, and T-Bone Burnett. The catalog was purchased in 1995 by Fantasy Records,[1] which in 2004 was taken over by the Concord Music Group. Fantasy has a handful of the Takoma recordings on the market as CDs as of this writing in 2007."
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 7:40pm Doug Schulkind:

Filling in the info on Jesse's playlists are always such a challenge because it is devilishly hard to figure exactly when each new song begins. THE SIGN OF AN EXCELLENT RADIO SHOW!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 7:41pm Holly in NC:

@ngh: via Other Music:
"Craig Leon's 1981 album Nommos, arguably the most unusual record released by John Fahey's Takoma label, sees a long overdue reissue on vinyl, remastered from the original analogue master tapes in a full reproduction of the original release.

Leon is primarily known as a record producer who helped start the careers of NYC icons like Blondie, Ramones, Suicide, and Talking Heads, and who then went on to helm the boards for such high-profile luminaries as Luciano Pavarotti. What many don't know is that he released this incredible LP of analogue electronic wizardry at the height of the post-punk era, creating a monstrous, hypnotic beast of an album that combined the rough-edged primalities of early electronic synthesis with a more studied compositional sophistication. The record's five extended explorations were inspired by African ceremonial rhythms, and predate and foresee the electronic tribalism of early house and techno and the gritty ambient textures of the Mego/Blackest Ever/Modern Love set. It's of the same contextual cloth as Eno and Byrne's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, and Hector Zazou & Bony Bikaye's Noir Et Blanc, in that all three albums were released nearly simultaneously and explore the same physical alchemy of African music with electronic tools that were arguably as primitive in aesthetic nature, if not more so, as a thumb piano or slit drum. That all of these albums still hold up today, and continue to inspire, is a testament to the power of these recordings. Anyone who has enjoyed works by the aforementioned, not to mention Monoton, early Cluster, and even Terry Riley's keyboard work, needs to grip this post-haste, as it's limited and not likely to last long."

BUT!! Per other web sources reissue apparently unauthorized & Craig Leon disavows as says not getting any $$ from reissuing label. It's a scandal! :-)
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 7:42pm Doug Schulkind:

This song info made me do a Bob Costas double-take. I thought it said "Little Eye" and "Infection" at first.

Ah, the pork shoulder is in the oven, so back to the show. I have a new set of bluetooth headphones, but was afraid of stepping on the dogs while browning the meat. A clear and present danger!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:03pm Doug Schulkind:

@pacific standard simon
"Stepping on the Dogs While Browning Meat" sounds like a T.C. Boyle novel.

ack i missed Gurdjieff goshdarnit was finishing the other show....rollover
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:04pm Holly in NC:

@pss - You're a wise man.
What are you doing with that pork shoulder? Details, please!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:05pm pacific standard simon:

Or perhaps Augusten Burroughs!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:05pm Doug Schulkind:

@LovecraftDude888
My apologies from the chef.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:08pm pacific standard simon:

Holly -- simple slow braise in beer & rosemary, first hour, then a bunch of stuff (leeks, fingerling potatoes, artichoke hearts, roasted peppers and baby carrots) added to make it a stew, and another hour of cooking.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:10pm pacific standard simon:

If imagining that doesn't bring back your nose, I don't know what will.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:12pm pacific standard simon:

Wish I had this Joseph Spence soundtrack in the kitchen while I was grumbling and prepping.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:14pm Doug Schulkind:

"Spence" should be a spice that you can dash over marinating meat or some gumbo-like concoction.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:18pm pacific standard simon:

@Doug - agreed!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:21pm pacific standard simon:

I need to play around with that green tea that includes toasted rice, as a seasoning for vegetables.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Here's that Black Hole Cinema link: blackholecinema.wordpress.com
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:27pm Holly in NC:

@pss - poor nose is in that induced coma, but my stomach is now growling - which is close to impossible sans sense of smell. so thank you. It's like phone sex, but food!

Also have never played w green tea/rice, but Lapsang Souchong is lots of fun in many things.

Currently drinking green tea with all usual suspects (honey, lemon, ginger, cayenne, whiskey) and really I could just switch to plain hot water. Guess I'll do that :-(
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:28pm pacific standard simon:

I just got my Marathon announcement in the mail -- it was sent to San Francisco, then forwarded here!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:29pm Gary:

@PSS: Genmaicha
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:32pm Holly in NC:

I got a wfmu guitar pick today, very cool!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:32pm pacific standard simon:

@Holly - I love Lapsang Souchong! Been drinking it frequently because I ran out of my regular China Black. Today, some Turkish tea arrived.

@Gary - Yup, I couldn't think of the word. So good. I think it would work in a zucchini saute.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:34pm Holly in NC:

We should make a fmu cookbook for a marathon premium next year.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:34pm pacific standard simon:

I got a guitar pick, too, and there's no chance of wrecking it, because when I use a pick, it's a felt uke pick.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:35pm pacific standard simon:

I think there still are a few FMU cookbooks in the prize warehouse.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:36pm Holly in NC:

A cook book already exists??!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Just remember, folks. You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but just don't pick your friends' noses.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:37pm pacific standard simon:

A good reason to become a Mouse-pledger, I guess.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:40pm northguineahills:

@Doug: Challenge accepted!

Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:42pm Holly in NC:

I became a Mouse-pledger so that I could adopt the Miner, which seems like best reason ever! ;-)
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:42pm listener james from westwood:

sorry, been listening but been hip-deep in tax forms. if anything the show has been pulling me back to reality.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:43pm Holly in NC:

Oh gosh, I was perusing the warehouse earlier today & that totally escaped me!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:44pm Doug Schulkind:

The Miner will return, Holly. He's just been refusing to work those non-union jobs.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:48pm Doug Schulkind:

Back to reality, James? And that's a good thing? Good thing!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Memorex?
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:52pm Holly in NC:

Total sucker for female-fronted cold wave, nice.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Enough already with the waves of cold fronts!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:56pm northguineahills:

See y'all in the 'morrow. Jesse delivered again!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:57pm listener james from westwood:

thanks to the kaminskys for the great show, via our fine proxy host, and thanks to said proxy host for proxying!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:57pm pacific standard simon:

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Doug Schulkind & the Drummer DJs are what keeps me pumped about the station these days.
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:59pm Doug Schulkind:

That is really nice to hear, pacific standard simon. Thanks!
Avatar Tue. 2/18/14 8:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Good thing I didn't apply this show with e-proxy...
