Okay, in honour of tonight's theme, decided to change the way too chirpy bird avatar into something else Kurt might appreciate.
  Fri. 2/14/14 3:10pm Derek Bee:

That's right, they gave the audience sleeping bags on the way in.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:10pm Caryn:

If this is the 2 day version, does that mean Kurt's show will continue until Sunday? Kurt could just leave this on and go to that concert tonight.

happy valentine's day, everyone!

With Neil Young you can't ever say it's the notes he doesn't play.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- ah Neil - proud proud ♏Scorpios : ) ...
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:19pm Caryn:

@Mike: no, I haven't. I don't think it was released here, nor is it available anywhere locally.

BTW, is that someone's tour bus as your avatar?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:20pm glenn:

single notes only. neil never plays double stop stuff..
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:20pm Caryn:

I forget, Kurt. Was this one of the Beatles songs you hated, or one you defended in the recent "worst Beatles songs" discussion?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:20pm Mike East:

as a matter of fact, it is Neil Young's tour bus, parked outside Carnegie Hall.

Definitely check it out if it becomes available. Bela Tarr
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:21pm Kurt Gottschalk:

caryn, hated, tho i like this revisionist version
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Cowboys make me think - maybe this *isn't* such a weak spot in the Beatles' oeuvre...Anyhow - tag the 'Day Tripper'/'We Can Work it Out' single onto the end of 'Rubber Soul' & it's all better...
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:22pm glenn:

oooh. i missed the worst beatles song discussion, but i bet they're all mccartney songs.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- no - that one's Johnny's.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:23pm Caryn:

That's what I thought, Kurt. Which is why this threw me, since if you hated it, you wouldn't play it (that kind of behaviour is reserved for Ken)? I thought I must have remembered wrong. So, good to know.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:25pm glenn:

well, yeah, except run for your life isn't even close to being one of the beatles worst songs.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:26pm Caryn:

So, murder love songs. You could just have an hour-long Nick Cave set. I suspect the show will be more varied though.
  Fri. 2/14/14 3:27pm 67tele:

John Lennon also mentioned how he cribbed that "rather see you dead..." line from Elvis' "Baby Let's Play house"
  Fri. 2/14/14 3:27pm Derek Bee:

Leave McCartney alone!
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...it borrows pretty heavily from an Elvis song for starters...always interesting to see where Lennon's head & development were @ - if nothing else...he tended to self-reveal, 1st person - where SirMacca used Pastiche - &tc. ...
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Thx, 67...
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:28pm Caryn:

My view of Porter Wagoner is so Dolly-adjacent and wholesome that I wasn't expecting him to show up tonight.
  Fri. 2/14/14 3:28pm Derek Bee:

Oh dear, this isn't going to end well.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:29pm Cecile:

"guts" is pretty graphic

The lack of stories kind of mirrors real life -people committing crimes of passion often want to forget the crime. Psychopaths relive it.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:29pm coelacanth:

country death song. (obvious)

...Kurt,have you read "Steppenwolf"? You might appreciate it!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:29pm glenn:

no way. macca is the greatest rock bass player ever. he's written some great songs. he played the solo on taxman. and he's responsible for some of the worst dreck i can think of.
  Fri. 2/14/14 3:30pm Derek Bee:

You tell 'em glenn!
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...compare to Dylan, or Stones' 'Play w/ Fire' - or even John's own 'You Can't Do That' earlier - 'Run' is pretty weak; 'Rubber Soul' was done very quickly, actually - esp. for a stone cold Classic.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:32pm Caryn:

Let's face it, both Lennon McCartney have written masterpieces. And some absolute pieces of crap. As did George and Ringo, come to think of it. And I feel safe in saying that even the worst Beatles songs were superior to the worst Lennon and McCartney solo stuff.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:32pm ät çpd:

I totally agree with glenn but that heart gif is already driving nuts.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- that's interesting C'ec: I've often noted the lack of Motive in Murder Ballads, over Gruesome Detail - like - wtf - ?!?!
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:32pm DCE:

lucky me, someone got flowers at work today but they're not here, and now my wife gets flowers and I don't have to pay for flowers

Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:34pm DCE:

czech?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:34pm glenn:

true, but probably more because george martin produced the beatles, and he could make the howling of feral cats sound like the academy of st. martin in the fields.
  Fri. 2/14/14 3:34pm djelrock:

Excellent tune!
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:34pm ät çpd:

dang. I was embroiled in Beatles worst song discussions for the last 2 days. On FB and in real life.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:35pm hamburger:

wiki says czech!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:35pm Caryn:

@RRN63: well, often crimes of passion seem to lack a proper motive anyway. You're obsessed with someone, then overcome with some vague, undefined paranoia about unfaithfulness or "being done wrong by", and boom - you've killed someone.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:35pm DCE:

did anyone watch that dumb 50th anniversary special last Sunday?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:35pm coelacanth:

I think the worst Lennon & worst Harrison solo works are not even close to as bad as the worst Beatles' songs.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:35pm ät çpd:

I agree with glenn that Run For Your Life is not that bad. I also like Mr. Moonlight which no one else on earth seems to like.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:35pm Cecile:

That'll teach her to steppe out on him.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...in fact - the entire Beatles enterprise was exceedingly quick & productive & insane
...George Martin - Fifth Beatle all the way for giving us those Recordings! - altho' Lennon's point taken: everybody claims to be the secret behind The Beatles - but what have they done w/out them - ??
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:36pm DCE:

I kind of liked Jeff Lynne and Joe Walsh and George's son doing "Something" but other than that, I turned it right off
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:36pm glenn:

i concur with cecile on the charley pride. sorely underrated is charley.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:36pm Caryn:

@glenn: heh. I suspect that even George Martin couldn't make something like "Bip Bop" sound good.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:37pm hamburger:

"hey porter" is a song, and only song, that for some reason I get a smell association with it, every time I hear it, the smell of leather in a car that's been in the sun for a while...
  Fri. 2/14/14 3:38pm Derek Bee:

All these country songs and written/sung by supposed Christians - love, I tell you.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Mr. Moonlight' was a cover - an obscure one, & points for that - & done w/ some ironic Humor (c'mon!! - that organ) - almost prefiguring The Ramones in dumb greatness like that - & a total standout Lennon vocal - 110%.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:39pm glenn:

oh man. my testosterone count is going up- by the second.
  Fri. 2/14/14 3:39pm Robert:

Before hearing that last number, I'd never realized "Daley's Gone", about Richard J. Daley, was a parody.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:39pm Caryn:

Hey, I was just typing about how I was expecting Tom doing "Delilah" to show up any minute, and had to delete what I was typing when the intro kicked in! Kurt, you sly devil!
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:40pm Cecile:

ITA, glenn. voice of satin.
A lot of perpetrators of crimes of passion say if they had waited until the moment passed, they would have just called their lawyers and filed for divorce. But it seems like when you get to that point, decisive and fatal action is the only solution for those folks.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:40pm ät çpd:

(..Beatles debates all a result of Kurt by the way...)
  Fri. 2/14/14 3:42pm Robert:

Funny the 1st impressions I get from a song. When I heard the line, "The first time I shot her," my initial thought was that this guy was in the habit of shooting Delia, maybe shot her every day!
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:42pm DCE:

she was a tough woman
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:43pm Caryn:

@coelacanth: I disagree about Lennon, but I do think Harrison probably had the most consistent solo material in the sense that his worst solo stuff was never anywhere as bad as the other three's, or the Beatles' worst stuff. Good on you, George!
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Robert: ...reminds me of a Ray Bradbury story in which a guy gets busted for killing a virtual version of his woman...
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:43pm Caryn:

@DCE & Robert: Delilah was the Rasputin of ladies. Keeps getting shot, keeps living.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:44pm ät çpd:

right that dumb list of worst Beatles songs has 3 covers on it--you can't hold them responsible for other people's tunes.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:44pm glenn:

does anybody have the wandering eyes - "songs of forbidden love' disc? it's chock a block with great old country songs about well, forbidden love.
  Fri. 2/14/14 3:44pm Robert:

And I heard that Daley song only once, shortly after he died, on I forgot which station in Chicago.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:45pm Cecile:

the singer is taking the guns to town.
Ruby is taking her love to town.
And that song was made famous by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition.
Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:45pm DCE:

we have a local country music show on our college station that plays obscure late 60s early 70s stuff. almost all of it is based on cheating and drinking.
  Fri. 2/14/14 3:45pm Kenny Rogers:

I get no respect
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:45pm Caryn:

A few months back, I bought a big box set of country murder ballads. This show makes me want to dig it out and put it on (only after your show, of course, Kurt).
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 3:47pm glenn:

Avatar    Fri. 2/14/14 3:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...George was also less prolific - the least showbizzy or motivated to express his ego to the Public - & his worst was religiously preachy - &/or dull - altho' he'd been held back as the Dark Horse by the Big Two & came out the gate w/ particularly great stuff...John (who died @ only 40 in 1980, always remember) tended to say it was all about Him & Paul - much as people put John & George together in the 'Cool' column...George's last stuff ('Brainwashed') was pretty good though !!

When she "contributed" to other peoples' songs is when she really was horrific...But,i'll think about it.John did have some really bad songs, but there are at least 5 Beatles songs that i absolutely cannot stand.

  Fri. 2/14/14 5:20pm P-90:

We just had a long discussion about Belayev's Silver Fox experiment in a seminar at Columbia yesterday, funny coincidence. He strongly feels that his results support the theory that by selectively breeding the parent wolf species for obedience and sociality, we created the domesiticated dog by selecting for a suite of genotypes that cause the animal to eetain the qualities of a puppy into adulthood. The more "neotynous" the animal becomes with each new generation, fewer individuals develop the adult characteristcs of independence, aggression, etc; they retain the emotional state of a puppy sharing a den with its mother and siblings.
The significance of the other physical traits, like color variations, corkscrew-shaped tails etc. that are recessive and occor very rarely in the wild populations, which ghen appear very frequently in the "domesticated" experimental groups is that they demonstrate "linkage", i.e. the genes that code for those features are linked to the genes for the traits the experiment was breeding for, so they "inadvertantly" came to predominate along with the "obedience and sociality" genes. This is important because to understand natural selection, we have to understand that genes under selective pressure will carry other genes with them, even though those other genes are not themselves of particular benefit
