Can you send that dog over to clear my driveway?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:33am Doug Schulkind:

Have your numnums ready, duke, and she'll be right over.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:41am Uncle Michael:

Rufus Thomas is shoveling my drive.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:43am Doug Schulkind:

Hmmm, should I play Rufus' "Walk the Dog"?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:43am Uncle Michael:

Too late. He's not our dog no more.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:44am glenn:

happy v.d.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:44am Doug Schulkind:

@glenn
The have medicine for that now.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:46am Jeff Golick:

She missed a spot...

Dropping by early to wish everyone a happy show day - I will be field-tripping for the morning, and straight trippin' (i.e., having lunch) with my wife later on.

See you in the ark-hives!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:46am glenn:

so that nigerian guy keeps telling me. did you sell him my email address?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:50am Doug Schulkind:

Have a lovely, romantic trip to White Castle, Jeff Golick!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:51am Uncle Michael:

Buy 'em by the sack!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:55am Doug Schulkind:

Although I hear now that White Castle buns have the same "yoga mat" chemical in them that Subway bread has. I mean really. Is nothing sacred?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:57am Gary:

I'm too hypnotized by that dog to come up with a funny greeting
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:58am Doug Schulkind:

My plan is working, Gary, mwahhaha!

Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 8:59am ndbob:

morning Doug and everyone!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:00am glenn:

the pooch does seem to be enjoying himself.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:00am Doug Schulkind:

@glenn
I think I detest the word "artisanal" more than any other in the English language.

Morning ndbob!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:02am glenn:

really? i think empowered is the one i hate the most.
  Fri. 2/14/14 9:03am lucy in brooklyn:

valentine morning to you!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:04am listener james from westwood:

"incentivize" and its bastard offspring "incent" (v) are the aural equivalent for me of catching a hangnail on a sweater.
morning, doug, and all!! we are in melting and sloshing-thru-slush mode in the sunny NYC area!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

I am suddenly inspired to become a "life coach" and call my company, Artisanal Empowerment.

♥s to you in Brooklyn, Lucy!!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:05am Doug Schulkind:

High and dry greetings to you, Listener James!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:06am Alex In Illinois:

My dog would clear the snow too, if the snow were made out of schmaltz or some other animal fat.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:08am Doug Schulkind:

If it were, Alex, that would be some kind of horrible environmental disaster. Unless it was bacon fat. That would fine.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:09am duke:

I hate the words monetization and monitize
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:12am glenn:

the love of monetization is the root of all evilocity.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:13am Uncle Michael:

Schmaltzopolyse! Matzo ball fight!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:13am glenn:

my uncle was an auctioneer and a square dance caller. he could talk REAL fast.
  Fri. 2/14/14 9:14am jeff g on-the-go:

I can't stand a certain use of "grow" -- e.g., "Doug, how do you plan to grow this Artisanal Empowerment company?"
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:14am Uncle Michael:

I mis-pelled schmaltzopolypse.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:15am Alex In Illinois:

For me, it is not so much the words themselves, as their misuse. People should learn the meaning of the word "penultimate" before using it. The word "invite" is a verb, not a noun. The noun is "invitation". "Fail" is a verb, not a noun. The noun is "Failure". "Bad" is adjective, not a noun. "Fault" or "mistake" are the nouns that should follow the word "my" when admitting culpability.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:16am Uncle Michael:

schmaltz-pacolypse?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:16am Gary:

Deliverables. Around that. Socialize. Circle back to. Leverage. Constituents. Professionalism. I can think of two, three dozen other words and phrases that make me cringe whenever my co-workers (or I) write or say them, but it's a day off for me and I'd rather think about other things. Like the earth covered in bacon fat
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:17am Uncle Michael:

The verbing of nouns is as old as the language.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:17am glenn:

and he could rock a tartan sports coat, too. images.ourontario.ca...
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

Schmaltzopolypse is my new favorite word in the English language.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:18am Brian in UK:

Hello Doug & chums

politician is a word that sticks in my craw. That & chill out.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:18am glenn:

isn't it sort of bastard yiddish, though?
  Fri. 2/14/14 9:19am jeff g on-the-go:

What @Alex said. Also, for me, it is and forever will be a blog post. The individual, dated entry itself? Not "a blog." Sorry, Roger Angell.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:21am Brian in UK:

Love the present tense in this title.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

@jeff g on-the-go
No one speaks sharply to Roger Angell on this show. NO ONE! (Sorry I yelled.)

Hello Brian in the UK! I hear you met our dear Brother Sherratt recently!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:24am glenn:

by the way, drummer, i see you'll no longer have a.j. burnette to kick around. he's gone to the phillies.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:25am Brian in UK:

Yes Doug, it was a darkened room in norf Lunnon with a man called Holley verbalising. Seems like a good egg.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

@glenn
A.J. came on Pittsburgh sports radio promising it was the Pirates or retirement. I'm not going after the biggest contract, he said, that's not what I'm about.

He was fine for the Pirates when the Yankees were still paying most of his salary. Philly will learn to revile him.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:26am Alex In Illinois:

I think someone should create a chatterbot every year that uses the most overused words of the year as a linguistic time capsule.

@Uncle Michael: But I was refering to the nouning of verbs, and a few other things.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Right, at the Lonnie Holley show! Fine gentle men all 'round.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:27am Alex In Illinois:

But don't worry, I did get it. (verbing as an example).
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:27am glenn:

well, that 3.99 career e.r.a. makes that pretty much wheat in the bin, to quote damon runyon.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:36am glenn:

so none of that rage, rage stuff for you, doug?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

I'm all the rage, glenn.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:39am Alex In Illinois:

Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

That would be sometime in the mid-2160s. Two hundred years after The British Invasion.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:44am Brian in UK:

Love the way this track sounds as if it is about to fall over
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:44am Gary:

@glenn ... wow, that's impressive. That said, New York felt warm outside when I went out to get my GF a treat for this morning. (Shhh, she's still asleep.)

Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:47am Hugo:

Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

If that dog can fill a sandbag get him on the next boat. Hi Doug, hi everyone.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

I hope your aren't swamped, Shaun. The photos have looked miserable.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:51am Brian in UK:

Hello Shaun. I meant to ask you what you thought of Bill Callahan's drummer. Personally, loved his creativity behind that Ringo kit.

Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:55am Holly in NC:

My bugaboo = "reach out" . UGH.

I love the shoveling Shepherd, I need to teach the 2 at my side to do that! Tree down in driveway, trapped, but it's a lovely day.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 9:59am Shaun:

@Doug I'm on the Eastern side of the country - they've got it worst at the taps end. @BitU Really loved the Callahan drums but my hands hurt in sympathy.(I'd love the bass player's job, btw. Holding one or two notes a bar *and* sitting down? Dream gig).
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:00am cd tap:

hmm, that dog is talented but seems to lack focus. Seems like he'll be as "helpful" as my son was yesterday..... (he lost my favorite snow shovel, dammit)

Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:03am Uncle Michael:

What do you know about the Bolton Brothers? This female singer sounds just like Marsha Gee of "Peanut Duck" fame.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:04am glenn:

i had no idea, gary.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

@cd tap
I BROKE my favorite snow shovel, a heavy metal battleaxe that laughed at crusted ice. Now all I have is a foolish plastic shovel and there are no more shovels to buy in Western Pennsylvania. A disaster.

GREETINGS to you, KevinfromBayRidge!

Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
There is a huge pothole (crater) on our street just a few feet from where I park right in front of our house. The driver's side of our car gets Jackson Pollocked every day with the salty-sandy slush that cars splash onto it when they hit the pothole. I literally have to wash down the side window to see out of it. It was amusing for the first few days. Now I just cry inside. (Of course, I could park somewhere else, but NO!)

Howdy Michael!

Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

@Lewis
Sorry to harsh your mellow.

@at cpd
The chair thing is a tradition in Pittsburgh, though I have seen some people putting chairs out to protect spaces that were never even dug out. #lame
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:40am glenn:

then the right wing would fall apart, earrie.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:41am Lewis:

@doug, not a problem, followed my own advice and equilibrium has been restored!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

I have been watching some of the CBC's coverage of the Olympics and the Keystone Pipeline ads have been revolting.

@Lewis
The doggie misses you.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:44am still b/p:

Doug, you need a big, really big, German Shepherd that will place itself along the length of the vehicle on the pothole side to intercept the spatter. Goo' boy!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:44am at cpd:

totally lame. Chair pop up everywhere on the South Side when it snows--especially in the Slopes.

New Your State has officially changed its name to State of Emergency. Snowpoaclypse or Schmaltzopolyse?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

A 22-year-old Andrew Cyrille on drums here with Walt Dickerson. I had Cyrille live on my radio show the night Dizzy Gillespie died. Cyrille dedicated a song to him. Sad.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:45am Michael:

Hey Doug.. Thei works too! City of Boston now "allows" limited use of chairs to save shoveled spaces because of the heavy snow this year.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:45am duke:

Troy NY was great at putting chairs out to reserve spaces. We furnished our kitchen with those chairs when I was in school.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:46am listener james from westwood:

this piece is stellar!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Apparently there have been a number of disputes over chair-held parking spots, because the Pittsburgh Police felt compelled to issue a statement acknowledging that saving parking spaces with plastic lawn chairs is not exactly legal.

We leak with national pride.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:51am Hugo:

Always appreciate hearing Roscoe Mitchell. This must be from Cafe Oto in London. I didn't find time to go there the last time in London, but there's always a next time.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:52am earrie:

Or is it 'burst' ? 'Gush' ?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:53am still b/p:

I want to read about a superhero who protects a city called Schmaltzopolis from villains.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

@earrie
Spew?

@Hugo
Yup, Cafe Oto.

@still b/p
I bet Sid Caeser could've riffed nicely on that.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:54am Alex In Illinois:

I rent a parking space in a lot accross the street from and 100 feet East of my building. I always park in the same spot on the end, which I have shovelled a few times. I do not mind if someone uses the space while I am away at work (some peple have 12 hour day permits), so that is why I am reluctant to guard it with furniture, machinery or animals or other barricades. Also, if someone uses it while I am away, that will keep new snow from falling on it. I just wish there were a way to make sure it is clear when I get home.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:55am glenn:

yeah, if somebody puts a chair out, it just gets driven over.
i've started wondering if all the train derailments lately aren't being engineered by the pipeline / oil folks. it seems a bit suspicious to me.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

Here is a lovely piece on Roscoe Mitchell written by the wonderful Matthew Shipp: blog.tableandchairsmusic.com...

@glenn Nah - that sounds absurd to me
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

@glenn
Jesus, that is just sinister enough to be possible.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:59am earrie:

They're made into bigger news stories more like.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 10:59am ndbob:

shakin' my head here - few things make me sadder then to hear conspiratorial things from the left - which I generally support

I just read that a drillboat called the Kraken will set off explosives underwater in the harbor today as part of dredging operation. I don't think I like the sound of that, myth-adventure-monster- havoc-releasing-bad-movie-plot-possibility-wise.

Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:02am ndbob:

maybe this chat is not the place for me ya know?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:03am Uncle Michael:

I'm agreeing with you...I think...about lefty conspiracy wackos.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:03am glenn:

sorry, earrie. normally i laugh conspiracies off too, and i'm actually kinda embarrassed that the thought entered my mind, but you do have to admit there's been a lot more derailments than normal lately.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:04am ndbob:

great UM:)

Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:06am ndbob:

@Glenn true - but those things happen
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:07am earrie:

Yeah, well, the math is pretty straight forward - bump up transports, bump up probability of accidents.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:07am Uncle Michael:

Now if you were to suggest that fracking was *causing* derailments...
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:09am ndbob:

@earrie correct
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:10am glenn:

yeah, but it's not just more transports, it's reducing the number of safety check, inspections, rest breaks etc., at the same time.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:10am Gary:

Whoa. You got my attention!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:11am Gary:

This is a Sublime Frequencies I don't have ...
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
Talk like that will get you tarred and feathered in Western Pennsylvania.

@Gary
My plan is working!
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:11am listener james from westwood:

i put it down to companies being too cheap to pay for maintenance/skilled labor (often an excuse to get rid of union workers) and government not being strong enough to resist erosion of consumer/citizen protections. witness west virginia.

@James that I agree with - totally

Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:13am listener james from westwood:

jeezuz, wasn;t there just another derailment in w. pa.? vandergrift, pa, was it? (i only remember b/c a guy involved in the early oil trade had that name; town may have been named after him.)

Emphasizing the risk/fear of derailments happens to be a convenient narrative for those invested in oil. The time scales of those perspectives are on the order more like that of insects.

@earrie indeed - no apologies needed from anyone
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:32am listener james from westwood:

I'm scared about the concept of fracking, even though I don't know the science (or lack of it) behind it. Blowing up our planet piece by piece?
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

@pacific standard simon
Welcome aboard. I will give you a private replay of the first two and half hours.

@at cpd
That is surprising to me. No one can run for office around here, including the progressive Democrats, without supporting fracking and the energy companies wholeheartedly.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:40am still b/p:

Would that be included in the big downloadable collection of Stax singles you pointed us to a few years ago? I made a couple of CDs from that bunch, but never unpacked the rest.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:41am fleep:

Oh, what's a random earthquake now and then, happens here all the time.
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:41am ndbob:

@b/p It should be - there were two of those collections
Avatar Fri. 2/14/14 11:42am at cpd:

I know, Doug, but I think the winds are shifting. My republican brother-in-law specifically mentioned not voting for anyone who supported fracking. Course he's not the most conservative guy on earth but still...

These love songs remind me. This morning when I got to my car, and I saw a an envelope under the wiper. First, I thought it was a ticket because I have not yet updated the sticker on my license plate. I cussed, then grabbed it and realized that it was not orange but red. My wife put it there when she was walking the dog a little earlier. Still, I will put the new sticker on tonight.
