hola!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:12pm kirk from beer city usa:

bonjour
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:13pm mariano:

Off to a mellow start...
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:16pm Cecile:

Do you have that Satyricon song "Phoenix"?
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:16pm V Priceless:

Hey Diane! Very postal of you to soldier on thru the maelstrom to do your show today! Thanks!!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:17pm tim from champaign:

Hey Diane and folks. Any opinions of the Sabbath album Mob Rules? I don't have it.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:18pm Diane Kamikaze:

You must acquire MOB RULES!!!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:19pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Agreed...Ronnie James Dio was on top of his game on Mob Rules.
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:19pm LovecraftDude888:

it's good if you are into Dio and all that...I'm into that phase to some degree, not massively but he was good. and Heaven and Hell isn't bad.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:20pm Cecile:

Mob Rules is a blindingly great album, except for Coutry Girl, which just makes me giggle.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:20pm kirk from beer city usa:

usedta have that one, but haven't in a while. I seem to recall that I liked it better than heaven & hell, the other Ronnie James Dio LP.
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:20pm V Priceless:

@ Tim: hate to play the purist, but IMHO, no Bill Ward, no BS!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:21pm Cecile:

if you listen to fools, the mob rules

but we're not fools, so go get mob rules.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:22pm Cecile:

kirk, RJD did at least four records with Black Sabbath
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:22pm V Priceless:

My bad. Automatically thinking new rekkid. Too much of the white stuff in my brain!
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:22pm LovecraftDude888:

actually I forgot Bill wasn't on that album...gheesh! I dunno I still prefer the classic Sabbath LPs, for sure. The new one was meh....some thought it stellar, I didn't.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:24pm Cecile:

YUSS!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:24pm Cecile:

so beautiful.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:24pm tim from champaign:

OK, that's what I needed to know. It actually was the lack of Bill Ward which is why I shied away from it. Thanks buddies!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:26pm Cecile:

I liked the extra tracks on the Dio Years comp. The Devil Cried is pretty amazing. "I told Satan what a jerk you were, and he even cried."
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:26pm LovecraftDude888:

Some bands would just break up...but then again AC/DC soldiered on....figuring I guess that Bon would have wanted it that way, in that case....I'm sure....and with BS they were prob. so fed up with Ozzy's antics they weren't gonna let the band die that way. Led Zep was another story, of course.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:27pm Cecile:

this should be a fricking hit places besides Norway.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:27pm Luna:

Greetings.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:28pm Cecile:

Lovecraftdude, the more I read about the last days of Bon Scott, I believe he and the Youngs would have parted ways eventually. So, yeah, continuing made sense.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:28pm Cecile:

hey, luna!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:29pm Diane Kamikaze:

AND if you'd like to ask PEER PRESSURE guest Kembra Pfahler (The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black), please post!!
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:29pm LovecraftDude888:

Cecile...yeah that's quite possibly true. I read not long ago that indeed Bon had many more issues than alcohol, heroin, pills, coke whatever, I believe. So lord knows. He was not in good shape that's obvious, understatement.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:30pm Cecile:

I got nothin' for once.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:30pm Cecile:

YES.
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:31pm LovecraftDude888:

seems like his replacement is rock-solid, I'll give him that, he never self-destructed and could have! That guy is unstoppable.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:31pm Cecile:

He was also 10 yrs older than the Youngs and had been on the road for nearly 20 years by the time he passed. He also had wider tastes in music, literature and pretty much everything else than his bandmates.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:32pm listener james from westwood:

w00t! sign of the southern cross! used to put this & the next 2 tracks on mixtapes. tough to break 'em up.
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:32pm LovecraftDude888:

oh aye..I see, sure. That might not have lasted, anyhow.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:32pm Luna:

Hi Cecile. And everyone else. Diggin' the SABBATH.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:32pm mariano:

I like the Dio phase of Sabbath, but for different reasons. Their sound really changed. I thought Dio was only on two albums, though, H&H and MR.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:32pm Cecile:

Lovecraft, I was always a bit dubious about AC DC with Brian, but I finally saw them live, and he was a fitting successor. A really great showman.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:33pm Cecile:

nope, Dehumanizer
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:34pm kirk from beer city usa:

Cecile: I forgot about the live one. wikipedia lists Heaven and Hell (1980), Mob Rules (1981), Dehumanizer (1992), and Live Evil (1982). Missed the 1992 one.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Live Evil, too.
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:34pm LovecraftDude888:

oh yeah for sure..I never saw them live, sadly, but I was always a fan and I have an old HS pal who was huge into them and met Brian a few years back, sent me the pics to prove! hehe!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:35pm MenfussMike:

This is in my top 5 Dio era Sabbath songs.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:35pm Cecile:

yup, that one, too Ken.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:35pm tim from champaign:

Holy shit, this song convinced me that I ABSOLUTELY need to get Mob Rules. Thanks, Diane. This song is like a malevolent bulldozer.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:36pm Cecile:

Brian seems like a very nice guy.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:36pm Cecile:

tim, and it's not even the best song on the album, IMO. You will not go wrong with mob rules.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:36pm MenfussMike:

i think the Live Evil version is better....more Satanic.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:36pm Diane Kamikaze:

My absolute pleasure, TFC! Dehumanizer is great, by the way. I have seen Sabbath with every singer. Iommi was still carrying the hammer, no matter what!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:37pm Cecile:

eight miles high about to fall and no one there to catch you

classic
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:38pm mariano:

@cecile, @kirk Oh, I see: lost track of them by the early 90s. I remember they went through a bunch of singers, Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes (I think), etc.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:40pm MenfussMike:

i didnt care for dehumanizer (saw that tour). The last GREAT sabbath album was BORN AGAIN with Gillan on vocals
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:40pm Cecile:

NICE!
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:41pm LovecraftDude888:

I think an old friend of mine (long lost) lived in Kembra's building in NYC for a bit....so she told me
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:43pm Diane Kamikaze:

Loved Gillan on vocals. Saw that show in NJ's Brendan Byrne arena..
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:43pm mb:

Hi Diane. Could i make a hate request dedicated to Ken. That jerk punked me last night on 7 sec delay when he tricked Andy in to believing Don Mclean had died in a ballooning accident. I only heard 15mins of the show and it was the first thing i mentioned when i went to retreive my amps from the repairman. Got back in the car and they didn't say it was a joke till the last min of the show. He will rue the day.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:48pm mariano:

Didn't Don McLean do an album with Sabbath?
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:48pm jul:

like being there
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:50pm listener james from westwood:

i heard don mclean is an asshole.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:50pm Andrew Waterloo:

That White Lung album is just so good.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:51pm Andrew Waterloo:

There's has to be some bad karma in the fact that American Pie gets played on the radio whenever we remember the day Boddy Holly died.
  Thu. 2/13/14 12:53pm LovecraftDude888:

Booty Holly? he was his little-known hip hop soul brother....
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:53pm mariano:

Don McLean and Andy Beckman got into a flame war a while back. It's all on: wfmu.org...
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:55pm Rich in Washington:

'VOD!!!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:56pm Cecile:

Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:57pm Luna:

Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:57pm tim from champaign:

Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:57pm Cecile:

Andrew Waterloo - iTA. I'd rather hear "Chantilly Lace." More life-affirming.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:57pm Cheri Pi:

back from lunch in the NICK of time! Banh mi was delicious.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:57pm Luna:

Now all's I need is some PHOBOS.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 12:58pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:01pm Cecile:

Belock and Diane always rekindle my interest in the rock music.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:01pm Cheri Pi:

This is scuzzy, mommy likes.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:01pm Chris from DC:

Aw crap, I just realized I missed Flaming Metal System.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:02pm Stevel:

Cheri Pi: Also down with the scuzzy! Makes daddy proud.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:05pm mariano:

Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:06pm Cheri Pi:

  Thu. 2/13/14 1:06pm V Priceless:

Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:07pm mariano:

Rock breaks pick, you win!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:07pm Andrew Waterloo:

Some Swag for life would be cool.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:08pm Cecile:

I welcome my cold robotic future.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:08pm Cecile:

Bring on the nanotech
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:09pm Ken From Hyde Park:

This Voivod Appreciation Society member was trudging out to the mailbox and missed the meeting. I'll try to make the next one.

  Thu. 2/13/14 1:17pm LovecraftDude888:

Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:19pm Cecile:

she makes me smile.
  Thu. 2/13/14 1:21pm LovecraftDude888:

he say u under arrest, Mr. Deckard!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:25pm mariano:

The iron maiden was a later fictional invention, they never existed in the Middle Ages, and were invented by (mainly Victorian) artists who wanted to portray how backward Medieval people were. There's no historical account of an iron maiden ever existing before they were placed in Victorian wax museums. Pretty much everything we picture as Medieval really comes from the Victorian era.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:26pm Cecile:

that's because people like us are finally curating things
  Thu. 2/13/14 1:27pm LovecraftDude888:

also fictional was the dreaded Marillion. that pit and the pendulum thing was questionable as well
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:28pm mariano:

Yeah, but Pit & Pendulum: what a story! And without the iron maiden, we wouldn't have Iron Maiden.
  Thu. 2/13/14 1:29pm LovecraftDude888:

Indeed
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:30pm Andrew Waterloo:

The Iron Maiden just seemed like an exceptional amount of work just to painfully kill someone.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:33pm Cecile:

oh! maggie estep died!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:33pm mariano:

Well, there was being hanged, drawn, and quartered, though that was used more in the early modern era. And the ancient Persians had a particularly nasty form of execution called scaphism, Google it, but only if you have a strong stomach!
  Thu. 2/13/14 1:34pm V Priceless:

Trilogy of Terror!!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:35pm Andrew Waterloo:

I have watched many episodes of the Brain Scoop while eating lunch....
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:37pm The King's Torturer:

Give me the wheel any day. Hearing the screams fills my black heart with joy.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:45pm Andrew Waterloo:

Around here it's just the screams of horror as Team Canada gets silver in hockey. I guess Canadians are nice.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:47pm glenn:

silver? hmmm. i really don't know. we could lose painfully, or we could squish everybody into oblivion. it all depends on carey price.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:51pm glenn:

canada 3, norway 1.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:53pm northguineahills:

@glenn: watching the game as well.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:55pm Cecile:

YES
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:55pm Cecile:

the only impression I can do is Shelley Duvall doing this song
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:55pm mariano:

Nooo! Not Popeye!!!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 1:56pm northguineahills:

There's been a lot of the Popeye soundtrack on WFMU lately, well always for that matter.
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:03pm LovecraftDude888:

she's getting sound of "rats" in her ceiling, ya see
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:05pm LovecraftDude888:

the novel is a much more claustrophobic "serious" experience, even than the film. I wrote an essay on Blatty and his works years ago....
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:06pm LovecraftDude888:

they cut that bit cause Friedkin thought it was too much or Blatty did..or something
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:06pm V Priceless:

I think a big part of the what made that movie so terrifying back when it was released was no incidental music to give away scary scenes. Only the excellent Tubular Bells soundtrack.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:07pm Kurt Gottschalk:

<3 that you got your mom to take you to the exorcist and then she grounded you for it, diane.
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:07pm LovecraftDude888:

yeah the sdtrk is a stroke of genius like a Kubrick sdtrk etc.
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:08pm LovecraftDude888:

Friedkin sez he tried as much as possible to do it as cinema verite reality-based, etc. to make it as real seeming as possible to some degree.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:11pm Cecile:

she's just lovely, and so is her assistant.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:11pm Luna:

Devo, Thin LIzzy and The Stranglers...love it.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:12pm mariano:

To me the scariest part was when she turned into the priest's dead mother. Still makes me shudder.
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:12pm V Priceless:

Stranglers! Woo-hoo!
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:12pm LovecraftDude888:

I find TV and stuff doesn't do it for me for depression or whatever....and seasonal affect. music helps a lot more, and exercise...going out and doing stuff. /dami? Dami why u do this to me? (really sick)
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:14pm Cecile:

also, don't discount the sexism angle
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:15pm glenn:

tubular bells is a brilliant piece of music.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:15pm northguineahills:

When people find out I play 'music', I just tell them it's artsy-fartsy so I don't have to describe it to them.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:15pm InBrkly:

I love theatrics! One my fave acts in the 90s was Screaming Mad George & Psychosis.
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:16pm LovecraftDude888:

SPIN magazine was like the annoying bastard cousin of RStone...who cares and now it's worse!!!
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:16pm LovecraftDude888:

meanwhile nobody called Xenakis artsy fartsy to his face! haha
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:18pm LovecraftDude888:

he'd bayonet ya!
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:19pm V Priceless:

Any Burt on the list?
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:19pm LovecraftDude888:

don't call Sam Fuller artsy fartsy! hehe
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:22pm northguineahills:

cool interview, thanks!
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:23pm LovecraftDude888:

totally enthralling
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:24pm Cecile:

she does crazy scary performance art and is just the sweetest person.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:24pm TDK60:

Interesting interview.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:32pm Cheri Pi:

I saw her in Cincy in the mid nineties, it was a RIOT!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:32pm tim from champaign:

Cool interview. I'd like to hear more interviews with musicians who also do visual/performance art.
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:33pm LovecraftDude888:

I once interviewed this perf. artist guy Monty Cantsin he did a perf. at my college using a blowtorch heating up an iron or whatever. Crazy dude
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:35pm V Priceless:

Ha! Great! Hey Diane...now that the cat's outta the bag, we insist upon a segment dedicated to the back story of your mom taking you to see The Exorcist and her justification of your subsequent grounding! Yes, very cool interview!
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:36pm LovecraftDude888:

her punishment was to have to watch children shouldn't pl;ay with dead things 10x
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:42pm Cheri Pi:

Whelp, popeye vocals have already been established and *owned* frankly by Abbath so it's nice to know that Shelly really does represent for Olive Oyle.
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:43pm Cheri Pi:

Girlschool!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:47pm Kurt Gottschalk:

oh my god, going to alaska! i love this song. i don't think i've heard it since downtown beirut closed!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:48pm northguineahills:

It's been o'er a decade since I've heard this, I can't remember where....
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:51pm Cheri Pi:

Italy!
  Thu. 2/13/14 2:52pm LovecraftDude888:

Cheri..love your radio monsters!
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:53pm Cheri Pi:

Thanks LD88 :)
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:55pm Kurt Gottschalk:

Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:56pm Diane Kamikaze:

Who doesn't love those radio monsters??
Avatar Thu. 2/13/14 2:58pm Andrew Waterloo:

I watched all the martian clips with my daughter this weekend. I'm torn between radio and telephone.
