I liked the visual design, a large portion of the book is a road trip through postwar America. They found all the right kinds of N. Rockwell-esque locations, and real US countryside. That stuff was noticeably absent from the Kubrick, filmed in England...

@Rev: Gaylord was speaking of the 63-64 period, from which the (almost) only footage is of huge arena shows w/screaming fans, inadequate PA reinforcement etc....his point was the "excellent performing band" was neutralized by those circumstances, when the cameras and audio tape were rolling.
So there.

@Rev: The physical infrastructure for presenting little electric combos to big, big audiences simply was not in place, it really worked against them. They all say it discouraged them, it turned shows into a joke, the studio just seemed more comfortable and relevant after that

Slade... that explains all the winds for the first 2/3rds of the show. 2% RnR: Check.
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:36pm pacific standard simon:

2% Revolution 'n' Rabbit?
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:36pm Dave Mandl:

@phat: My pleasure.
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:37pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: I'd gladly do 40% Slade.
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@pss: you wish that little.
  Sun. 2/2/14 11:38pm P-90:

...but in a two-hour slot, doesn't that guarantee become "less than 3% RnR", if it's the same quantity of RnR? Just wonderin'
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...don't eat animals - but I prefer half&half to 2% or such actually: gotta get my trans-fats somewhere...
Avatar Sun. 2/2/14 11:40pm Droll:

I'd like to hear an all Slade set. I didn't figure you for a Slade guy... Maybe it was all the Mellotron.
  Sun. 2/2/14 11:41pm P-90:

You should consider actually doing a "40% Slade" Special Edition, you could include a little phone interview w/whoever might still be alive
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:42pm pacific standard simon:

I'm holding out for the return of the three-hour slot -- or, rather, KICKING IN during the Marathon.

What's this about a bass guitar chord that doesn't make sense?! I must know the forbidden bass part!
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:44pm pacific standard simon:

That's one of the things I like about Quicksilver Messenger Service -- nutty bass chords.
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:44pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Utterly dissonant bass chord.
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:45pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Not a root note, anyway. (Sorry, non-bassists.)
  Sun. 2/2/14 11:45pm P-90:

@Droll: "...didn't figure you for a Slade guy..." HAHAHA
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:47pm pacific standard simon:

Dave -- did you see the Dark Shadows movie with the fake Alice Cooper band? Pretty damn good, as I recall.
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:48pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: I bet they used Mellotron somewhere. Everyone did.
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:48pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: No, I didn't!

Kemialliset Ystävät would have made John Lennon ______________.

...I wonder if Slade shared any bills w/ Humble Pie...just blue-skying here...I think there is *one* Bill that The Wh♂ & Zep shared...

The one time I ever saw The Who was also the only time I saw The Grateful Dead. A Day On The Green in Oakland.
Avatar Sun. 2/2/14 11:51pm Droll:

2% Rock n Roll, 40% Slade, 33% Mellotron, 25% bass chords that don't make sense -- it's Dave Mandl's New World of Echo!
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:51pm Dave Mandl:

@RRN63: Slade and Humble Pie would have been the rockingest bill ever.
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:52pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Sounds about right.
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& imagine if Lennon were still around in NYC to say 'Howdy' @ FMU...
Avatar Sun. 2/2/14 11:53pm Andrew Waterloo:

Slade is just one of those things
  Sun. 2/2/14 11:53pm P-90:

I've heard of this fabled Day on the Green
Did Dr. Leary make a gubernatorial campaign speech there?
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- oh pss - don't make me hate you now : great poster for that w/ an Owl on a Skull...

Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:55pm Dave Mandl:

"So you think my singing's out of tune? Well, it makes me money" (Slade). How great is that?
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:55pm Paul McCartney:

Hello. I'm Paul, and I'd just like to say "WFMU rocks my world when I'm in New Jersey attending sporting events. Now pass the bloody reefer, mate."
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:56pm Dave Mandl:

Or "out of time"?

Thanks, Dave M. Good luck catching your train.
Avatar Sun. 2/2/14 11:57pm Droll:

Time's up already... When you get the other hour back there'll be more time for the Weekly Math Quiz and this forbidden bass chord thing... You know, the important stuff.
Avatar    Sun. 2/2/14 11:58pm Paul McCartney:

On the hat rack, you swine!
Avatar Sun. 2/2/14 11:58pm fleep:

  Mon. 2/3/14 12:00am P-90:

Thanks, Dave M! I'll bring a bass chord root note in next week for show and tell!
Avatar    Mon. 2/3/14 12:01am Dave Mandl:

Thanks, everyone! Have a great week.
Avatar Mon. 2/3/14 11:26pm Droll:

Out of the blue, "Do you want...?" suddenly came to mind and I needed to hear the lads knock one off like it was nothing... Ridiculously tight band. This ditty is under 2 minutes! It's like a damned candy bar! Only the best parts, just the right amount of crunch, and so sweet your teeth hurt.

So, are you gonna do 40% Slade? I'll listen.
Avatar Thu. 2/6/14 4:59pm maltempinulla:

Finally caught up to last weeks show.... a fine one
