Heard once the difference between "involved" and "committed": the chicken was involved, but the pig was committed in the bacon and eggs combo.

Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 3:42pm coelacanth:

Cecil is one of my gods...Even when he plays "regular jazz" (the boring crap that most "jazz listeners" "listen" to), it's interesting.
  Wed. 1/29/14 3:43pm Alison Porchnik:

Irwin, thank you for playing that Sugar Cubes song. Not only was I surprised and delighted to hear Bjork's mellifluous tones wafting gently from my hi-fi, but it reminded me that I have two plastic drinking straws in my purse, artifacts from last night's voice lesson, and I need to retrieve them and practice. Coincidentally, I'll be practicing "All of Me." Today is truly an amazing and serendipitous day.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 3:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Cecil not heard enuff - we iz agreed.
  Wed. 1/29/14 3:46pm Alison Porchnik:

I thought it was an asthma attack.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 3:49pm Irwin:

They give her an asthma inhaler because she has trouble breathing, but it's a panic attack (as I understand it).
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 3:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- cheers fred. *I* don't hear Cecil Taylor enuff...I has obseved & remarked how many Free playerz has roots in Roots music - R&B & Gospel & even Country...
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 3:50pm Mark Helsten:

That was Eric Carmen's all by myself, not Pete Seeger's, for the record....
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 3:50pm Carmichael:

Could FMU become the official listener-sponsored independent music station of the NFL?
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 3:50pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Alas, nothing that interesting David f.kst... merely a lingering tendril of a hearty, drug-soaked youth..
  Wed. 1/29/14 3:50pm Alison Porchnik:

They also give her adrenaline, which is used for things like athsma and anaphylactic shock, not panic.

Picked up her double EP after hearing it here - good stuff. So thanks Old Pal Irwin.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 3:52pm Irwin:

Anaphylactic shock -- that's what it is. The reviewers all called it a panic attack. You may be correct.

I never used it recreationally.I didn't like the way it felt.It was a last resort for asthma if i didn't have meds around. It also was gaining popularity as a diet aid,& (not necessarily so safe)energy aids. Drug companies had to do something (as with tryptophan),and meth was a very convenient excuse.

Ephedrine is available, but only in miniscule amounts (~6 tablets?) and you have to sign for it, and it's much more expensive and har to come by. It wiped out congestion like nothing else, but with a wild racing heartrate along with it.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 4:43pm coelacanth:

I'd been stung/bitten dozens of times before without more than a little pain. Maybe my immune system was low at that time; Also, one wasp was pumping venom into the center of my calf for the entire duration of me carefully walking down a long flight of wet wooden stairs holding a heavy box of fragile, valuable items.

Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 4:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- different but still Joe. Perhaps his work covers enuff of a span we hear Joe @ different ages, even - but I tend to think he knows & matches form to effect - ?...
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 4:54pm Droll:

P-90, No: proximity effect noted at 4:06. His choice of pad or bed music also gives a JF episode its unique "color".
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 4:56pm rrg:

Irwin, can you please fix that typo in Droll's post at 4:54?
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 4:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...odd to think of Joe Frank as being like Jimi Hendrix - discovering differnt effects @ different Periods of his Art...

  Wed. 1/29/14 5:05pm P-90:

Yeah, that "proximity" is the absence of the usual strong compression, that makes his voice reminiscent of Bill Murray's brother Brian Doyle-Murray at the bottom of a natural gas well?
(If anyone remembers Brian D-M...who was actually little bit famous before Bill was famous at all.)
@Rabbit: col idea about JF "style periods," but I think this "work in progress" is a raw tape that he hasn't added the effect to...
@Droll: re: 4:54: not "it's" when possessive...ok Irwin fixed it.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:06pm rrg:

I remember Brian Doyle-Murray.

B. D-M's still around. He plays cranky old men a lot. He was in Caddyshack; he was known for his Hunter S. Thompson impression long before lil' Bro played Thompson in "Where the Buffalo Roam"

Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:14pm Carmichael:

B D-M was an early member of National Lampoon back in the LP days. His brother came along at the same time, but didn't get the good parts until much later. Christopher Guest and Richard Belzer (Law & Order) were involved early as well.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:15pm Irwin:

Dr. Dean a/k/a Dr. Sanford I. Berman. Look him up on wiki.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:15pm rrg:

Is this from Really Rosie?
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:16pm Droll:

Is it hypocritical to care about "I Don't Care"?
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:16pm rrg:

Yes, I see it now.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:16pm Parq:

You bet, rrg. Lots of performers have covered it.

Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:18pm Sean B.:

Nice to be here fellas!.....Word.
Wed. 1/29/14 5:19pm Listening Out There:

Thank you, genial host, for info on Sanford I. Berman. His family is from rural Minnesota, like mine. I, however, did not become a hypnotist. Dang...
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:19pm Parq:

One of the easiest to find is by the Dresden Dolls. Brian V really tears into the drum part.

By the way, Irwin, do you have anything in front of you that says who the drummer on this session is?
  Wed. 1/29/14 5:20pm P-90:

Hey Carmichael! yeah Brian was actually one of the stars of the National Lampoon Radio Hour syndicated show before Bill even broke in. He wrote and performed a lot there, and wrote for the magazine and the NatLamp live touring shows, featuring Chevy Chase, John Belushi, etc (and Chris Guest, who also wrote a lot of stuff for the mag.) --let's see, so where did Lorne Michaels go when asked to produce a "hip" show for Saturday late nights? Hmmm...

Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:26pm Parq:

P-90, I never understood why Chris Guest wasn't grabbed up along with the others by Lorne in 77. He didn't get onto the show until years later, and only for a short while. Something personal with him, I'm guessing. He was always my favorite of all of them.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...he was only a *Guest* - duh...

Has anyone already called dibs on the plastic ice bucket from the Hyatt? If not I call double dibs on it.
Wed. 1/29/14 5:38pm Listening Out There:

RRG: Yeah, (I was thinking) that (two sets of parentheses) in a song title (doesn't happen too often). Reminds me of linguistics classes from a while back
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:41pm Droll:

. o O ( Who?! ) Whooda, I think they're talking to you (not me).
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:42pm rrg:

It would make me think of LISP except they're not nested.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:43pm Parq:

Interesting thing about the word "lisp" -- if you have one, you can't pronounce it.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:45pm Droll:

Lisp users know the value of everything... and the cost of nothing.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:46pm Droll:

Clarification required: How much, if any, text is required between the matched sets of parens?
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:48pm rrg:

A single word would be enough, I was thinking. But am I not thinking that through?
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:48pm pepper juiced genitals:

(If) they are talking about me (not to say they are) it wouldn't be the first time.

Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:49pm Carmichael:

"Parenthesization". I'm observing this word from different angles, studying its habits.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:51pm rrg:

If we were Brits we would say "parenthesisation".
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:52pm feeding tube frenzy:

parenthesisation? I thought that meant when mom and dad finally give up and leave me alone.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:53pm rrg:

Or leave you on the curb in a basket!
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:53pm Droll:

I've been stymied by parenthesis again -- they're used everywhere for everything:
paul mccartney & wings, band on the run, jet (original from picasso's last words) (background)/paul mccartney (dialogue link 7)/jet (original from picasso's last words) (background)/al coury (dialogue)

Very difficult to get the "intended" enumeration of song names with parenthesis.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:54pm rrg:

All this junk appears in the song titles themselves, you mean?

Yeah, that would make it harder.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:55pm rrg:

What? What? Are we ending early? What?
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:55pm Parq:

Yeah, that Blakey was a perfect finish. Another good'n.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:55pm rrg:

No fair.
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:56pm Droll:

rrg, Yeah, all that was a song title!

Thanks Iwrin, have a fun week!
Avatar Wed. 1/29/14 5:57pm children:

i,in most circumstances make my rules,so that it's logical to me but clear to others;but in school we were told to put commas & periods (now called"dots") within the parenthesis, before continuing...but merriam webster says no- outside.

So now how much money do I get ?
Avatar Thu. 1/30/14 8:15pm Irwin:

Arden, I'm concerned that you're preoccupied with money. Musicians must accept poverty and day jobs! Ask your Uncle Lane.
Avatar Thu. 1/30/14 11:06pm Droll:

[Sobbing uselessly] Arden, don't listen to Grampa Irwin! Society needs to stop stealing from musicians. It's not okay to steal from the people who fundamentally change and inspire our lives. You deserve to be paid! Musician is an honorable, skilled profession!

Until then, remember it's called "playing" for a reason. I want to hear you smiling on your next record, too.
  Sat. 2/1/14 9:38pm arden eno:

Droll firstable you can't tell if I have a smile on your face or not you can only hear me. Are'nt you like 20 21or something well you need to go back to 1st grade.
  Sat. 2/1/14 9:42pm arden eno:

2ndable you know how much money a kid can get for being on a radio . For example theres this four year old boy who seems to be coming on ellen over and over.
