the crappy 91.1 signal was making the station less tolerable to my wife than usual...a real problem if I wanna listen in a room or car that only gets fm signal. I'm glad they are doing something about it.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:32pm JakeGould:

I’m in Bay Ridge & can’t tell the difference. Also, 91.1 sounds good out there.

@JakeGould - earlier today, its had less static, but sounded like it was coming in a bit hotter than usual (louder than other stations)

Hey everyone, thanks for tuning in tonight! Yeah, the backup transmitter was making everything sound overmodulated to me - especially talking. Hopefully normalcy will be restored by tomorrow night.

I hope the new squirrels in the transmitter don’t freeze overnight.

Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:47pm Uncle Michael:

I may be the only one here who cares...or maybe not...but Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks have announced in a joint release that they both will be leaving the Allman Brothers Band at the end of 2014.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:48pm Stevel:

Derek Trucks is a must-see solo act. Looking forward to a second viewing someday.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:48pm pacific standard simon:

And each forming separate, warring Allman Brothers Bands?
Wed. 1/8/14 9:48pm Richard from Venezuela:

Hello Evan
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:49pm heretic from Effigy:

It doesn't matter DJ Uncle Mike, the Allman Bros. have a longer shelf life than a Hostess Twinkles. I never got over the loss of Dywane, but it didn't seem to slow THEM down.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:50pm Uncle Michael:

No, each concentrating on their own wonderful bands.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:50pm neelc23:

@simon If Black Flag can do it, why not the Allmans?
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:51pm Holly in NC:

@Kathy - Oh my gosh, I used to LOVE Polar Orange Dry... when I first moved down here I'd make friends coming down to visit bring at least 1 bottle! That and pierogis.

How goes it, QG66?
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:52pm nanantatee:

I'm so pissed EVERY time I tune into WFMU this Dwight Twilley song is being backannounced. I'm gonna lose it!!! I must hear Burnin Sand!!!
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:52pm pacific standard simon:

Too bad -- there's so much potential there for brutal, internecine warfare.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:53pm Uncle Michael:

I think he's great...truly great. I first saw him sit in with the ABB when he was 15. I'm a bigger fan of Warren Haynes though,
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:53pm Holly in NC:

Great pic of the "Allman Joys"

Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:53pm Danne D:

Hey neel:)
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:53pm efd:

@nanantee, clearly the solution is to stop tuning out WFMU.
Wed. 1/8/14 9:53pm Richard from Venezuela:

Hey Danne D!! Good to see you.

No, no there isn't. JK.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:56pm deaf white cat:

Uncle Mike, if Holly from NC means what I think it does. she should be able to tell us about Warren's yearly New Year's bash at the Orange Peel in Ashville, I heard it rebroadcast on WNCW this year as usual.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:56pm Danne D:

@EFD I hear a rumor that your original nickname was EGDD - any truth to that? :o)
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:56pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:56pm efd:

@Danne, categorically false.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:57pm nanantatee:

@efd don't encourage me! I really needed those tacos.
  Wed. 1/8/14 9:57pm Kathy:

were you impressed with the pierogies haha? as my grandma would make them hundreds at a time and I never had any better and became a snob
And orange dry I remember from my single digit years, it is analog of mixers. poor mans margarita
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:58pm Mike East:

Warren Haynes rehearsed here a few years ago...I think Peter Frampton showed up too.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 9:59pm Uncle Michael:

Warren lived in NYC for quite a while.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:00pm nanantatee:

Is patrick cowley a descendant of aleister crowley?
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:01pm Uncle Michael:

Warren is an interesting guy. He originally got drawn into the Allman orbit doing backing vocals in a Gregg solo album.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:01pm Holly in NC:

Durham's quite a ways from Asheville, and I have never been to Warren's bash. Sorry :-(

@Kathy -my Polish ex-step inlaws (?!) spoiled me w pierogis, also the church ladies at various fairs. And in a pinch there were a couple good packaged local brands out of Holyoke, Hatfield, Chicopee.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:02pm Uncle Michael:

Mike, when you say "here," do you mean a venue?
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:02pm angry inch:

@Mike I wonder if Framton is still backing Bowie, for that matter if Bowie is still in,...eer, I mean out of, eerr...no, that's in, out of retirement?
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:03pm Mike East:

Rehearsal studio
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:04pm Uncle Michael:

I'm guessing that was loud.
Wed. 1/8/14 10:05pm Richard from Venezuela:

Cowley track is good.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:05pm Mike East:

Not the loudest we've had, but yes, definitely.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:06pm efd:

which leads to the inevitable question...
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:06pm Uncle Michael:

One of my favorite relatively recent concert memories was seeing Gov't Mule on a night when the Derek Trucks Band was playing in the same town, blocks away. John Scofield was on the same bill as Derek and the two of them came to sit in on the Mule encores which lasted an hour. Scofield seemed to be both a little out of his element and to be having a blast. I had a blast.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:07pm balkanized bathroom:

Thanks Holly. Just wondering if you were in NC. I spent several years closer to Charlotte. I never made it to the Ashville music venues but WNCW is my backup stream to FMU. Tonight is the Grateful Dead night which normally pulls me away from FMU (reluctantly).
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:08pm Uncle Michael:

What's on WNCW, bb, The Grateful Dead Hour?
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:08pm Mike East:

I'll say the loudest genre is Salsa, I think.
  Wed. 1/8/14 10:09pm Kathy:

I have my great grandmothers pierogi board, an old wooden parallelogram like 2x3 feet, that she brought over "on the boat". Never made them myself but I must of course do it dang soon.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:10pm Mike East:

funny, balkanized bathroom...we have a Dead cover band in tonight
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:10pm nanantatee:

this is more like what i imagine gay porn music would sound like. maybe next time i'll leave the sound on.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:11pm Uncle Michael:

I do, Rev...and I'm planning a feature.

I made the huge mistake of not going to see Frampton about three years ago. I hear his live sets are terrific these days.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:11pm Whooda:

WNCW is a freeform college staion in Spindale, NC Isothermal College. They have some dedicated shows: GD, Celtic, Satruday night is Blues Party (excellent) after midnight is ARC, freeform with new DJ's. They offer a lot of bluegrass plus the standard NPR Diamond show, also world music, etc.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:13pm Uncle Michael:

Look like GDH is on Wednesdays on WNCW. David Gans is an old friend of mine.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:14pm Whooda:

YES! David Gans kicks it off then Uncle Dave (local) DJ takes over for about 3 or 4 hours. Uncle Dave has been doing GD on WFMU every Wednesday night for over 20 years.

@Mike East Which show is the cover band? Aren't you a FMU DJ? or is it going be be featured on another DJ slot?
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:17pm Mike East:

You'll hear it all on WFMU
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:17pm nanantatee:

this show must be a gemini like me.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:19pm Mike East:

I'm no FMU DJ...yet, anyway. I just work at a rehearsal studio.

taken by johnk77. credit where its due. thanks, man!
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:22pm Whooda:

I believe Steve Gans currently tours with a GD cover band show, or I could be on drugs and just having false memories.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:23pm Uncle Michael:

Who is Steve Gans?

Sorry, David Gans. hehe I told you my memories aren't trustworthy.

Your great-grandmother's pierogi board, how wonderful! I am envious.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:26pm Uncle Michael:

David's been touring a lot...mostly solo acoustic though he seems to play with lots of various folks here and there in his travels. He's not in a Dead cover band. There are always a few Dead songs in his set.
  Wed. 1/8/14 10:27pm PJ:

Someone's listened to a lot of the late period Jam.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:28pm Whooda:

Hey there PSS. You inspired me to get into the kitchen tonight, am preparing to peel a ton of potatoes. Did you wrestle that ham into the Dutch oven today?
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:31pm pacific standard simon:

That weren't no ham, thet were pure pork shoulder! Yep, just finished a big bowl of goulash. With beets and gnocchi, of all things.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:32pm Whooda:

You can't beat a gnocchi with a hambone on a cold night like this. Love me some comfort food!
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:34pm pacific standard simon:

Just don't forget to grate a half a ton of onion to go with that ton of potatoes.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:35pm Whooda:

Oh, yeah, now your talkin' the same store that had the potatoes on sale also had yellow ownyuns on sale too. Got me a big bag full of 'em.
  Wed. 1/8/14 10:36pm LovecraftDude888:

Finally a month late I got mailed my replacement The Jam enamel badge...this time with a working allen key lock for it...it's rad! the little things we get excited about...from UK of course I can't even eat gnocchi anymore...due to Type 2...allegedly. it's torture

THAT's what we call rock and roll!
  Wed. 1/8/14 10:40pm LovecraftDude888:

Whooda...thanks yeah was reading up on that earlier. I don't know them but from rep. I did see the band Clowns for Progress years ago a lot they dressed up too...and weren't that great they were ok.

Party In Paris to be precise
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:52pm Uncle Michael:

The UP cover was pretty faithful to Hot Chocolate. I suspect the SOM cover wasn't.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:53pm Uncle Michael:

*UO, not UP
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@UM: I for one ain't goin' nowhere when efd plays a Punker set !...
  Wed. 1/8/14 10:54pm LovecraftDude888:

Sisters version is faithful lyrically and in their own manner absolutely!
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:54pm Uncle Michael:

SOM cover of Gimme Shelter is a killer.
  Wed. 1/8/14 10:55pm LovecraftDude888:

Have a good night everyone!
  Wed. 1/8/14 10:56pm LovecraftDude888:

one day we'll hear about why Andy E. decided to kind of kill the band....after the infamous 1997 record co. strike...well ended then but...not really. He's a strange duck
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:56pm Santos L Halper:

@UM: still here...but then how can i be in two places at one when i'm not anywhere at all?
  Wed. 1/8/14 10:57pm LovecraftDude888:

we'll find out Andy E. is really Droll! haha
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:57pm Uncle Michael:

I know almost nothing about them. I just heard that track in '89 tripping balls at the Smart Bar in Chicago and it stayed with me.

Don't crush that dwarf. Hand me the pliers.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:58pm Holly in NC:

I heard the Sisters version well before I ever heard the HC originak :-)

Sisters Gimme Shelter is AWESOME.

Long Train, Temple of Love, Fix, Poison Door, oh fuck I adore all pre-Floodland Sisters

Uncle Mudhead?
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 10:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...SOM great - but haven't heard them in ages...had a girlfriend crazy for them & Nick Cave & things - great tastes but uptightly narrow - a whole period kinda thing...
  Wed. 1/8/14 10:59pm LovecraftDude888:

I saw the Sisters at The Ritz 1990 for the Vision Thing tour it was stonkin'. And then in Philly in 1997 it was less than stellar
  Wed. 1/8/14 11:00pm LovecraftDude888:

hrmm I'm a Nick Cave fan for sure myself...but partial to his early stuff to Tender Prey and the Birthday Party too of course
  Wed. 1/8/14 11:01pm LovecraftDude888:

Holly...I'm with you, Sister....Long Train ha I used to use that as my old Yahoo handle...I think Nobody had any idea what it was about

Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 11:02pm Uncle Michael:

  Wed. 1/8/14 11:03pm LovecraftDude888:

Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 11:07pm Santos L Halper:

I had no idea there was violence afoot, but i see it on the wiki. I was there to see Chuck and Flave myself; no bad vibes that i noticed.

"a controversial North American tour in double-act with Public Enemy. Fearing a clash between white fans of The Sisters with the black following of Public Enemy, several towns banned the performances, and the tour was cancelled halfway through."
  Wed. 1/8/14 11:07pm LovecraftDude888:

This looks like a great interview UM...gonna bookmark it and read in total later...so much media overload these days. and meant to say, I need to catch up with The Melvins..dunno them that well or Pavement but I hear they are both great bands.

  Wed. 1/8/14 11:11pm LovecraftDude888:

a friend of mine used to make tapes as the alter ego "ANDREW MURPHY' a conglomerate amalgamated goth singer....howlingly funny stuff he would intone over minor chords about being cautious of the Long island girls "Japs" and being beware of them...etc.
  Wed. 1/8/14 11:13pm LovecraftDude888:

I never run into goths anymore...esp. not on LI. I saw one guy with his MC jacket on at dunkin Donuts last week and I had mine on...and we were like...wow man far out but he was sub. younger than me.
