Hi.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:04pm Rich in Washington:

I always thought Gnossienne sounded like a French chicken/potato dish.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:04pm pacific standard simon:

Buzz-buzz, a-diddle-it.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:05pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Wow, this is annoying
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:06pm Rich in Washington:

I think it's alternating between the GTDR auto-stream and KLERE. I hope I didn't jinx it with my stupid entry comment.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:06pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This is enough to make me, uh...
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:07pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Well, this isn't getting any better.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:07pm pacific standard simon:

...plotz?
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:08pm Bliss:

Don't, uh.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:08pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I'm gonna reset something. Back in 1 minute.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:08pm kat330:

Yep, streaming in and out here, too.

Hey, hi, Kenzo and HNY!

After 30 hrs.+ w/ no streaming water in da house (frozen pipes despite leaving the drizzle and all), guess only makes sense for no stream here.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:12pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oh no, kathouse freeze!
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:12pm Carmichael:

Speaking of streams, pardon me for a few minutes.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:13pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Again, HNY (I wasn't here last week -- or was that next week?)! Just 40 mins. ago our stream returned to the pipes, but seem to transfer to the GTDR stream, for a bit anyway.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:14pm Rich in Washington:

@kat330: That sucks! Hope your plumbing is OK!
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:16pm kat330:

Thanks, Rich, and HNY to you! Yeah, well, the verdict is out on that because it is certainly not up to ordinary pressure. Our landlord said he'd check it out tonight if the pressure remains as low as it is now. But having ANY running water is cause for celebration!
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:17pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Helllllloooooooooooo pacific standard simon, listener james from westwood, Rich in Washington, Bliss, kat330, streaming Carmichael, and quiet and future friends!
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:17pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This is mighty frustrating. Frozen internet wires.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:18pm kat330:

Ahh, just on the word "stop" the stream stopped!
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:19pm earrie:

Oh I sent to kenzo@.. Hm.
Hey Carmicheal: The Ondioline photo. Greatness.

Well, I'm not sure how much of this any of us can stand
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:21pm kat330:

@Bliss: Philo and I also will consider moving -- been considering that seriously for 3 years now.

Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:26pm nanantatee:

i must notve been very careful
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:26pm kat330:

At least we didn't lose electricity or heat. OTOH, water is our only utility where we pay for using more than we ever do anyway -- a "minimum" is imposed disincentivizing the city to conserve -- so we'll see no silver lining with a lower bill next time.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:27pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

To remind me or perhaps yourself later about coming back for more of these live collages, you can click the star in the very far left upper corner of this page!
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:28pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

But dagnab that internet connection today. I will not stream the show using this method again. Too unreliable.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:29pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

When I post the archive (tomorrow?) it will be free and clear of this trouble.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:29pm kat330:

If I do that, it will unclick you, You want that?
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:30pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Jeez, for a dog walkign job you need a smartphone and you must be willing to do a lot of texting.
I feel like giving up.
Can't you walk a dog without owning a smartphone?
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:31pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

OK you don't have to UNCLICK. It already gloweth.

Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:32pm Bliss:

I am glad I don't need a smartphone to listen to the show.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:32pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

So, I'm tempted to call this airing!

I always hang out at a bank of payphones waiting for gigs.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:37pm Rich shifted a ton, didn't he?:

I don't like to look at my my screen when I'm outside. I can't see the stars.

I can't even type about it for fear of it being read and hurting my chances of earning a living.

I'd rather be a mutated piano than a member of homo-smartphonicus, slouching towards oblivion.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:41pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I've got almost no phone at all except the old one with the bell
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:42pm Rich in Washington:

the body will wither, with only nerves connected to genitals and two texting thumbs.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:42pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

genitals, yeah, right, we'll still have those
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:42pm Rich in Washington:

But who makes your bell ring, Kenzo? You can't LIKE anything with a rotary dial.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:43pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

then, also overall the mysterious ways that our holding back can be from nature, waiting until the needed times to bloom or shelter
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:44pm Bliss:

More and more people are asking for their employees to own one....I guess.
I have had no phone, even woth a bell, fo ten years. Just a voice mail service.
Now I use google to call out---which is gross, of couse.
Needing a smartphone and having to be willing to send "tons" of texts is ......... I fell speechless.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Alas I don't use a rotary phone, but it's from 1981 and the very first touch tone phone we ever had. Long cord.

I think my vacuum cleaner was screwing up your connection, Kenzo. Vacuum off, stream on. No problem! (I love double u words like vacuum. "continuum" "residuum" etc.)

OK, before I could send the above, the stream connection screwed up again. So much for my vacuum's extra powers. On the other hand, this electro chop-up could potentially pass for a Ken's Last Ever... (in a good way)
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 2:47pm Bliss:

Rich, how hard would it be for a guy that's nver texted or woned a cellphone to learn the ins and outs of a "smartphone"?

I was listening via the pop-up player and got caught in one of those hiccup episodes when the connection is lost. Listeners are still required to stop and re-start the pop-up player whenever the stream switches from one source to another (or, as in the current situation, when the connection is lost and reconnected).

My impression of Hawking's worldview is that it matches typical scientists. Thinks technology is the answer to the world's problems. Doesn't suspect it's the cause.

Result of a greed mindset, if you ask me.

Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 3:06pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Scientists tend to think science is the answer, because they're usually particularly shielded from non-tech warmth, and because it's intellectually tempting.

I mean, Bliss.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 3:08pm Bliss:

"intelectually tempting" is right.
One should laugh off that temptation and live life.

Of course, Hawking depended on technology to move around, etc.

i'm not sure it's accurate to say that any day of the week i'm listening to the archives. i mean, truth be told i rarely listen to archives. but it's certainly possible that i could. however it's far from true that any day of the week i might be found listening to the archives. that's just hyperbolic. anyway, good show.

Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 3:24pm Mike Noble:

Question for Kenzo or frequent listeners: On a recent program, there was heavy usage of the string part from "Street Hassle." I know Scharpling also used that sample earlier this year (and I'm not asking as some completist FOT, it was literally the only episode of TBS I heard all year--not a fan). Here's the question: coincidence? Or was one of you referencing the other?
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 3:25pm Mike Noble:

Coincidence seems most likely. It's a pretty evocative part.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 3:25pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Mike: I did it months before he did, on same station; that's what I know. Of course I was doing sound collage for 19 years at that point.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 3:26pm Mike Noble:

I thought TBS's wind-down stories were peculiar; a lot of press sounded as if Scharpling had invented the art of sound collage or something.

the history of KLERE still confuses me. I heard that show live in October and hadn't realized it was from March. The playlist search doesn't generally help with clarification.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 3:29pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Mike Noble: I only knew he did it because you mentioned it on your first time here. I was surprised when I heard it! Very similar sequencing of the Lou Reed piece. I truly don't know why that happened that way.

Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 3:31pm Mike Noble:

Ken, even if you quit, some day I want to talk to you about coming up to DC to do a one-off on pirate radio.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 3:33pm Bliss:

Kenzo, definitely stay open to doing one offs at least.
That'd be cool.
Avatar Wed. 1/8/14 3:33pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Mike: I do a live show live to an audience nearly every week. But I air multiple times in some weeks due to multi-station, and so some weeks I replay the same content after the live happening. But then other weeks, I can't physically be near a radio studio, and so I dig up recordings of past shows I especially liked. Nothing about the shows is ever pre-made. Has to be live, at least the first time.
