RR63, there's quite a few out there going to go under. i think Kiribati was one of the first to start a movement. as for the heat, hard to believe but i got stranded in William Creek three years ago due to floods. it's a bizarre country

Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:16am Dave Bombay:

I am a big fan of the twangy african guitar sound!
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:20am Guido (Cologne):

The Thai-Twang is not too far from that, sound-wise.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:21am Dave Bombay:

Good point. I enjoy Thai rock too. Its has a touch of surf sound which is neat for me.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:21am ausmanx:

that Mississippi records wooden box of African guitar is pretty amazing
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:21am Dave Bombay:

I am going to try to dig up a Thai set for next week come to think of it!
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:22am Dave Bombay:

I gotta check that out!
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:27am Guido (Cologne):

Looking forward to the Thai selections.
Currenly I'm just familiar with the "The Sound Of Siam"-comp.

I dig those hand-made double-neck guitars (they have a certain name which I forgot). I'd like to own one.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:32am Polk Biggins:

Hello FMU-niverse...good morning, Dave B.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:34am fred:

@Guido: There are few pretty good Thai comps on Sublime Frequencies, and there's one on Dust To Digital that looks great from what I heard on these airwaves
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:37am Sem Chumbo:

Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:38am fred:

@Guido: There were also a few comps on Subliminal Sounds, maybe more over-the-top stuff, which may or not be a bad thing for you
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:38am Berg:

this happening for real? :)
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:39am Guido (Cologne):

Thanks Fred!
Just found out, they even offer albums by Omar Korshid (Libanese guirtarist)!
Have his very first album which is absolutely awesome.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:40am Berg:

hey Fred - just sent you sth
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:45am ausmanx:

S Frequencies have a couple of great Isan DVDs too... their films are great because they're usually just the music, no superfluous narration
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:48am Dave Bombay:

Hey Polk!

I love the stuff that sublime frequencies puts out! I am trying to get some Aftrican/Middle Eastern LPs to give away during the marathon too.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:50am Dave Bombay:

Please pardon the interruption from Ronnie... Dude just came in and sat down. Nice enough guy though.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:54am fred:

Looks like local authorities didn't magically turn less dumb with the new year: a concert by an ensemble from Mongolia was scheduled for next week, but they were denied a visa. The official spin is that's to protect employment of French musicians
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:56am Dave Bombay:

That sucks. I didnt realize that French Musicians were that big of a threat...
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:56am Guido (Cologne):

Culture-protection like in the old days.
But that stud .... ?
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 7:57am Guido (Cologne):

... typo, I meant:
But that stupid .... ?
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:00am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...of course, the use of 'Left' & 'Right' in political terms comes from France in the 1st place - always interesting, sometimes harrowing to watch (& a good chunk of my DNA from there...)
- of course, WW II followed the Depression: take out the money - everybody's an Anti-Immigrant Economically-Conservative Nationalist all of a sudden...
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:01am Polk Biggins:

Wow..! Good on you, playing the Urinals' 'I'm a Bug'...I love OBNOX's cover of this tune.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:01am fred:

@Guido: It happens regularly, even for established festivals. Once they suggested hiring Corsican singers instead of a Vietnamese ensemble, for a festival of Southeast Asian music. I think most of the musicians from Mongolia who live in Europe are in Germany, so you may have more of that music nearby than I do
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:03am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yes my fellow 'D.B.' !: like your Mix & your Manner. Miss the utterly unique world Jason Elbogen brought to this timeslot - but grateful for you.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:05am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:06am fred:

Greetings, your turnipness
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:07am Rev. Turnip Druid:

...red fred.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:08am Dave Bombay:

Jason left large shoes to fill, but i am going to do my best!
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:09am Guido (Cologne):

Hard to believe!
That couldn't happen over here ... shall i dare to say that?
... seems like ... but I better stay humble ...
... there are no borders for official dullness.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:12am Guido (Cologne):

Jason was real cool!
But I hardly was able to work during his shows.
Too much of campfire and bacon-frying.

... eeeek ... I should go on now.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:17am Polk Biggins:

White Mystery...coolness. I need their Burger tape.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:18am Dave Bombay:

Me too actually.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:20am common:

good lord that was a crazy walk to work. good morn!
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:20am Polk Biggins:

Dave did you see that Burger released a tribute comp cassette of 'White Light/White Heat'? Gnarly.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:29am Dave Bombay:

Really?! I gotta pick that up too!
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:30am ausmanx:

France seems to be in a bad way at the moment. all the Dieudonne stuff is madness. still, if you have a "Socialist" leader doing arms deals with the Saudis, there's nowhere left to go, really...
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:33am Sem Chumbo:

a.k.a. Thin Ice.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:36am fred:

@ausmanx: At the moment? Dieudonne has being doing such things for years, and this country has always been willing to sell arms to anyone. Socialist is just the team's name, they're (almost) all rich aging white guys who've know each others for decades.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:39am ausmanx:

it's the desperation of it all which is quite new...
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:39am fred:

I like this cover
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:41am ausmanx:

and it's not dieudonne himself, it's the response. what's so threatening about the quenelle?
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:42am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, my frosty fellow listeners.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:43am Dave Bombay:

A chilly hello to you Ken from hyde park!
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:50am fred:

@ausmanx: Context. To it's mainly a distraction, but that context includes the Front National's effort to clean-up the worst of their image. Saying the quenelle is really a nazi salute is in part a response to that
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:53am Sem Chumbo:

Thanks for the morning of tunes and company. See you on the flip flop, Mr. Bombay.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:53am fred:

Dave, that covers section is a really great idea. I love it. Good luck with the snow
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 8:54am Dave Bombay:

Thanks guys! Catch ya next week!
