oh, that miso went quickly. btw, the trick about pressing, then freezing, tofu to firm up its texture? spot on.
UM, the greenmarket in an adjoining town had a knife sharpener who did lots of business from folks who had nowhere else to take them. the days of the sharpener's cart wending its way through the streets may be gone.

At the restaurant where I used to work, a knife sharpener came in on a regular schedule to sharpen all the chef's knives at once.

@ljfw - YES. Roasted split brussels sprouts are like crack, I eat them like candy. And they cook really quickly, close to instantaneous gratification. An unlikely but delicious pairing - cumin & parmesan (parm *after* roasting)

ndbob, i've recently been getting more asparagus into my rotation. segmented and sauteed, usually. also like to steam broccoli. as heads is tails, just call me crucifer.

@glenn - I of course meant parmigiano, dear lord, if anyone thought I meant the dreaded green cylinder, forgive me. But now I've sinned - sprouts snobbery ;-)

@pss - If I didn't suspect you don't eat meat, I'd suggest slicing the little guys & sauteing with cubed carrots & slab bacon, a recipe that has made many converts in my neck of the woods (google "best brussels sprouts ever").

Seriously, this is the soup I made last night : leftover roasted brussels sprouts (already utilized in the morning's breakfast hash w sauteed porcini mushrooms) leftover cauliflower 'rice' (aka cuisinarted cauliflower), leftover smoked chicken, homemade chicken stock, lots of garlic, lots of cream (only because I had a bottle perilously close to being expired as I only needed 1 glug for a different recipe last week), more mushrooms, some shredded cabbage, smoked paprika, dill seed... I think that's it. For something intended to use up things that were about to go bad, it was (is) a darn good soup. And very crucifery. Oh and some cheap cognac snuck in there too (hic).

Oh heck, leftover roasted sweet potatoes were in there too, just because they were also in the fridge. I don't really like sweet potatoes, but these were from my neighbor, they'd just finished curing & they're not too sweet and surprisingly good. Also cool because some of them are volunteers - they just showed up in my neighbor's compost pile. Magic purple sweet potatoes!
