I had to look up info on "Gloria", I guess it was an Italian pop hit for the writer before Laura got a hold of it:

Alma Gluck? Wasn't that a character in Ghost Story by S King/P Straub? Quite creepy if I recall - though it was middle school when I read that.

Pi, you got me a-skeered now, re: the turntable tonearm.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 3:27pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I've never messed with the tonearm balance/counterweight thingie. The Sony direct-drive I've got now is a reconditioned model, so in theory it should be a'ight... but..... fear...
  Fri. 12/20/13 3:32pm as:

it does sound so good like this
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 3:32pm Carmichael:

Hey RTD, don't let the turntable arm scare ya. About a gram and a half, give or take. And make sure the anti-skating is set to the same number.
Avatar Fri. 12/20/13 3:32pm braveness23:

Hi Pi
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 3:34pm Mike East:

wait, what did I miss about tonearms?
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 3:38pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Mike: bleedover from Bryce comment board. Cross contamination, as it were...
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 3:39pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

After moving to Tucson in the '90s, I discovered what the dry climate can mean for belt-drive turntables. The belts turned to friggin' dust! Happy to be back home in the moist east now...
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 3:40pm Mike East:

aha - I missed it today. my cartridge tells me 2.5 grams on the counter balance...I think.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 3:40pm Moist East:

Glad to have you back, Rev.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 3:44pm Carmichael:

I think that's the max, Mike, at least for my Technics SL-Q3. I think I set mine at 1.6g, but it could vary by mfgr. I can't remember my needle mfgr, but it's elliptical and has less drag and more groove accuracy than a conical version.

I missed the convo too, so I may be repeating some info from earlier.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 3:47pm steve:

Rev - did you have tons of static cling on your table as well when you were in the heat? my tables are right next to a heating pipe and in winter its basically a van der graaf generator if i don't turn on the humidifier
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 3:50pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I don't remember static issues, Steve. I moved back east in 2001 so it's been a while, memory is in tatters. Mostly I just remember having to replace belts twice due to them drying up & cracking off...
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 3:52pm steve:

that is so nutty. i can only imagine what what would happen to cassettes.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 3:57pm Mark Helsten:

Need to set your cartridge to within the specs the manufacturer suggests! they are all designed differently... 1.5 - 2 g is pretty common.
Avatar Fri. 12/20/13 3:58pm glenn:

how many pennies in 1.5 grams?
Avatar Fri. 12/20/13 3:59pm fleep:

Penny = 2.5 grams www.usmint.gov...
Avatar Fri. 12/20/13 4:01pm glenn:

we don't even make them any more. they figured every penny cost about 3.5 cents to make.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:02pm Moist East:

speaking of Hungarians, somebody took my paprikash outta the fridge and left it out on top of the fridge and now i don't wanna eat it cuz its been sitting out. wah.
Avatar Fri. 12/20/13 4:03pm Mary Wing:

"Moist East," heh. I was wondering if that was your drippy cousin, Mike East.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:04pm steve:

Avatar Fri. 12/20/13 4:04pm glenn:

what kurva would do such a thing?
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:07pm Mike East:

hehe, meant to change that back.. I'm drying out now.
glenn, the cleaning guy copped to it. He was cleaning out the fridge and forgot to put it back. He said he'll buy me lunch, but I'd like him to make me lunch with the same amount of love I put into that paprikash, damnit.
Avatar Fri. 12/20/13 4:10pm glenn:

according to www.youswear.com, Baromarcú faszfej is hungarian for cattle faced dickhead, which will now become my official new insult. if only i knew how to pronounce it.

mike east:

we talkin' chicken paprikash i figure...
over egg noddles?
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:13pm Mike East:

yes, chicken - actually over gluten free fussilli cuz I had a half a bag that had to be used and no egg noodles in stock.
  Fri. 12/20/13 4:16pm tonyb:

sorry for your loss.
that dish takes me back to my roots...
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:17pm Mike East:

Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:25pm Carmichael:

Kurt, this is my favorite of all the frequencies.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:26pm Mike East:

she's perfect. yes, I'm sure she'll have more fun than last year. she seems to like it when lots of people gather. Maybe cuz they're always telling her how cute she is.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:27pm Cheri Pi:

Long overdue response to RTD- Rev, my tonearm is old skool-no thingy that keeps it in place so if someone, aka MR Cheri Pi knocks it out of whack with his clumsy hands then I have to zero the whole thing and rebalance. It's easy now that I've done it a thousand times. still a pain in the ass tho
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:28pm kat330:

Ha, yeah, I'm sure that doesn't hurt.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:33pm Mike East:

this tone is similar to what I hear every night before I fall asleep.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:36pm kat330:

We have a factory a couple blocks down the road that emits a B-flat tone through much of the night. We bought a white noise machine.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:37pm Mike East:

unfortunately, I think my tone is in my head.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:38pm Sem Chumbo:

The fire siren here summons the volunteers firefighters with a very blue E flat.

Avatar Fri. 12/20/13 4:39pm glenn:

bagpipes are in Bb.
Avatar Fri. 12/20/13 4:41pm glenn:

so if you hate Bb, you hate scotland. haters.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:41pm kat330:

B-flat's one of my favorite notes.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:42pm kat330:

Ha, I wrote that BEFORE I saw your comment. I just don't want to hear it incessantly through the night.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:42pm Sem Chumbo:

Flawless logic, glenn. We in New Scotland salute you.
Avatar Fri. 12/20/13 4:43pm glenn:

Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:45pm kat330:

Gotta love Scotland. So beautiful, Edinburgh, Perth to Inverness, down beside Loch Nevis, up Ben Nevis... yes, good memories.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:45pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I, FOR ONE: Dig bagpipes and dig the peaty nectar of the gawds that comes from Islay, so Scotland is hereby restored.

Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:47pm kat330:

I don't think Scotland flagged for even a nanosecond, Rev.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:48pm Carmichael:

Glenn, whilst I appreciate the drone, I have a soft spot for the uilleann pipes. They're not tempered, and you get an upper-body workout, as opposed to a cardiovascular one.
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 4:49pm Mike East:

That reminds me, I will be finishing off my bottle of Laphroaig this Christmas to make room for a new one.

i like uillean pipes too, but the bagpipes are just so weird and so cool.

Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 5:12pm kat330:

@glenn: well, mine was *not* taken with a smartphone -- Philo and I don't own such a thing -- and was done in desperation to have for a track I uploaded. (Philo can only take outdoor pics of me for some bizarre reason, thus always in shades).
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 5:13pm kat330:

@Mary: I had a candelabra to the side, but since I couldn't judge where the frame was, and could only extend my arm so far, only one barely made it into frame. Trying for Baez' 1996 LP cover of her "Noël."
Avatar    Fri. 12/20/13 5:16pm kat330:

@Mary: 1966, yikes, not '96. [yes, I'm having a glass of wine]
@P-90: Thanks! As a sexagenarian, it could have been far worse. ;)
