Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 6:48am Mike from MPLS:

Has anyone seen Inside Llewyn Davis and formulated an opinion?
Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 7:09am Mike from MPLS:

So its not a biography of him, but loosely based on his biography? I shouldn't think of it as a biography when I watch it?
Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 7:11am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...love how in documentary Dave Van Ronk recounts how Dylan took his arrangement of 'House of the Rising Sun' for his 1st album & he couldn't play it anymore w/out getting accused of doing 'Dylan's' version - only for The Animals to take it from Dylan in turn...
Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 7:16am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...don't know much about him - but seems like he had a personality that inspired respect & was also open & endearing...
Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 7:23am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...embarrassing maybe to defer to wiki all the time - but it appears to have some good essentials expressed succinctly for him if not great & deep detail : en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 7:33am Mike from MPLS:

Thanks for sharing Dave Van Ronk...I'll explore further
Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 7:36am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yup - love the muscular authority in his singing & playing (skill there) - combined w/ the warmth he communicates - & also the range in Folk & Blues he mastered...easy to see why he was such an 'avuncular' figure (as wiki puts it) to so many subsequent Folk luminaries...
  Sat. 12/14/13 7:55am .:

...if you were a regular listener, than you would already know that Jeffrey Davison does indeed do some dextrous, astonishing, & truly hilarious raps between sets...
Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 8:01am tomB:

From the short reviews describing the character Llewellyn Davis was modeled after the ignoble behavior of Eric Anderson. Guess he's a composite character.
  Sat. 12/14/13 8:05am .:

@revo rabit: this is super news i luv to hear this..,,.. and; xmas is season of givin'....!!!!!!
Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 8:07am Jeffrey Davison:

Tom B: What ignoble behavior of Eric Andersen?
Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 8:10am tomB:

It was Dave van Ronk's girlfriend, Debra Green, who taught Joan Baez the basic repertoire of folk progression her Freshman year in Boston. A decade later, she had a major acknowledgement on an Eric Anderson album. Not just a muse, but a woman who had clearly mastered American folk music. Someone should make a movie about her, or at least write a novel!
Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 8:16am tomB:

Actually the reviews didn't mention Eric Anderson, it was the behavior that reminded me of what I'd heard about him. That he ran through "friends" like Kleenix, overstaying his welcome, borrowing from acquaintances and never paying back, not crediting song input, all in the name the ART of the Artiste, and the importance of his mission! Of course, that doesn't stop me from listening to his music, some of which I like a lot.
Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 8:23am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...sounds like a few things Dylan did...or any number of young struggling people - especially 'Creative' (read: unpractical) ones - especially in the 60s. &tc. ...
...maybe this is nutty, but Torres calls to mind Odetta a little !...can deffo hear the Rock/Pop roots - as not the 'precise' story-telling sort of Folk vocals, but emotive & stylized 'character' sort of singing I think of as rooted in AfricanAmerican music (ultimately I mean)...
Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 8:23am tomB:

The only time I met Dave van Ronk was with John Fahey in the dressing room at Folk City, the night that management banned Fahey forevermore for getting drunk and belligerent. Van Ronk seemed subdued and mellow, but who knows, maybe he was pranking Fahey.

Not much juice left in this internet device, but had to comment...Torres sounds great!

Avatar Sat. 12/14/13 8:38am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& my above is saying nothing about Torre's songwriting - which is obviously observant & concise & strong...I can well imagine she is 'riveting' live !
