Evening, friends and neighbors.

Nice way to kick it off, with sandy Denny ... just before Thanksgiving.
Avatar 9:08pm
Dave Mandl:

Hey deadland. Thanks. Yeah, very autumnal, that record. As usual, the "Late November" was a pure coincidence. Funny how these things happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
BDR:

Hey Man, thanks, I hadn't thought of Bailiff in a bit.

There are no coincidences round here.

Yes, a Gabriel reference, not a request.
Avatar 9:12pm
deanland:

OMG, Dave. Look how you spelled my name. Much as I like your show, I will never again say, "you killed me" as per the above.
Avatar 9:12pm
Dave Mandl:

Hey BDR. I guess not. There are forces moving my fingers toward the CD decks, but I can't begin to guess what's behind them.
Avatar 9:14pm
deanland:

Tell me you didn't roll the i Ching or pick Tarot cards before typing that.

LovecraftDude888:

I was just playing After Halloween last night! Having had a crap Halloween I had to play catch up.
Avatar 9:15pm
Droll:

Studio jazz recordings often seem to be missing applause at the end of each solo. It can make a great performance sound like it happened during rehearsal.
  9:15pm
LovecraftDude888:

and now it's cold as heck out there. oh the humanitee! I had to spring for some new Isotoners today.

The Jerry Garcia Ride at Deadland is one of my favorites. You get to drive the train.

Deadland? where is dat? hadn't heard of that as yet. I had some vision of having a Pink Floyd Convention the other day....I wish I had the bucks to do it. Let's do it! Get a grant.

what about the Wharf Rat ride....you get to play with the rat

It’s nice & cold. When I go outdoors, I know only the strong folks are out there. I respect them. They respect me. No nonsense. It’s nice & cold.

Deadland would be an awesome theme park to run: very low overhead because all you need is a parking lot to charge for and everyone would bring their own party. Stinky hippies don't need or use hygienic facilities.

The Frisco Kid:

!To rub it in, but It's about 55F here.
  9:27pm

You can stay at the adjacent Mars Hotel bla bla bla replica I'd like to see like, a Captain Beefheart Park! now THAT would be worth admission. The My Human Gets Me Blues ride.

So what up with new Rough Trade shop in Bklyn? Is it gonna be good or what? saying N. 9th St. for that. I hope it's good.

12539:

Dave, by taking the first letter of every other word in your last announcement I now have the location of Jimmy Hoffa's body. Maybe the next one should be a little harder.
Avatar 9:34pm
Droll:

My favorite tune on this album is Every Kinda People, this is s a very solid album. Good Kinks cover, too.
Avatar 9:35pm
deanland:

@12539 The 3d letter of the second word of every other show leads you to Judge Crater.
Avatar 9:36pm
deanland:

The tough part is how it takes weeks to get it, and then to know when Dave has cryptically switched to Amelia Earhart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
pacific standard simon:

In retrospect, it's hard for me to find Robert Palmer any more irritating than The Police, although it seemed different at the time.
  9:37pm
LovecraftDude888:

I love Robert Palmer, he was one of my heroes for sure. When I met Jody Stephens back in July, I wore my best RP outfit: black slacks, white dress shirt, dark tie, and dress shoes etc. I doubt Jody cared...but I did it for a larf. The girls came and tore my outfit off. not.
  Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
12539:

deanland: Don't forget you have to ignore the "e"s. It's always "without an e" on this show.
Avatar 9:38pm
Dave Mandl:

Welcome pss, 12539, Firsco, Jake.
  9:38pm
LovecraftDude888:

I was always a Police fan, but god, Sting solo...not so much.
I loved when Trouser Press called n. like the sun a vacuous cavern of a record.
Avatar 9:39pm

Jimmy Hoffa's probably buried in the neighborhood where I grew up.

@12539: I know, which gives me such an identity crisis.
Avatar 9:39pm
Dave Mandl:

Frisco, not Firsco. Sorry, trying to chew gum, type, and do a radio show.
Avatar 9:41pm
deanland:

Note that Firsco came second in that string.
  9:42pm
JakeGould:

Spelling bad. Alphabetical order, good.
Avatar 9:42pm
Droll:

Sting's fretless playing is torture -- when not intentionally out of pitch it's unintentionally out out pitch. It's just wrong. Thankfully the producers typically dubbed in a synthesizer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
pacific standard simon:

Sacha swings.
  9:43pm
JakeGould:

I actually liked “Dream of the Blue Turtles.” But past that, all the irritating stuff of that solo endeavor became his core. And I have 100% no clue.
  9:44pm
JakeGould:

Also, The “Dream of the Blue Turtles” tour was my first concert. Radio City. Had a t-shirt that official disintegrated 10 years ago.
Avatar 9:44pm
Dave Mandl:

@Droll: He shouldn't be allowed to play a fretless. Colin Moulding (XTC), on the other hand, should.
Avatar 9:46pm
Droll:

Even I owned (CS) Dream of Blue Turds: Omar Hakim, Darryl Jones, Kenny Kirkland, Branford Marsalis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
pacific standard simon:

Percy Jones for fretless president.
Avatar 9:49pm
deanland:

What?! You mean "Dram of The Blue Turtles" wasn't Sting's passive aggressive plan to get Flo & Eddie to join up with BB King?
  9:51pm
JakeGould:

I was 16 years old when “Dream of the Blue Turtles” came out. Forgive my youth.
Avatar 9:51pm

Dream, not Dram. Although "Dram of The Blue Turtles" has a certain pharmaceutical ring to it.

Drum of The Blue Turtles sounds like a rhythm band from The Bahamas.
  9:54pm
JakeGould:

“Dub of the Blue Turtles” is the reggae tribute to Sting that might actually exist but I will not even attempt to Google it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
pacific standard simon:

Jah, mon, I play de tenor turtle!
Avatar 10:01pm
Droll:

Looks like this show's gonna be long -- 1st ID down and still now Final Stretch in sight.

Fretless: Jaco. Mick Karn close second. The instrument has many great players, Sting is the poster child for "That's enough."

My coincidence here is I listened to Don Juan's Reckless Daughter two days ago because... well.. Jaco, Alias, and Metheny are a *backing* band... At the end I wondered "What is the mood of this album?" I'm still not sure. It has one, I just can't put it in words.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm

Oops, forgot about Jaco. Well, Percy's still alive.

Tim Hecker.. quite nice. Reminds me a bit of William Fields. www.williamfields.com

Percy Jones is one of my heroes. Jaco comes close.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
pacific standard simon:

I used to own an Ampeg fretless. In my hands, it was wasted.
Avatar 10:15pm

"Jaco comes close"? Them's fightin' words, Mandl.

pss, If you are wasting any basses presently, I can help you dispose of that burden.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

Sorry, Droll, my 4-string fantasias are currently limited to the ukulele.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm

I'm going to try that cut-out-of-record coaster thing, 'cause I need a replacement for my Graceland coasters.
Avatar 10:20pm

I've never heard of a "Record Coaster" before, I had to Google it. Don't the paper labels get ruined instantly? That doesn't look like a good coaster design.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
pacific standard simon:

Varathane!
Avatar 10:22pm
Dave Mandl:

Droll: You mean he doesn't come close? Well, I've always been a much bigger fan of Percy, but Jaco was great, no doubt about that.
Avatar 10:22pm

I actually took some lessons from Percy back in the '80s at some point.

Dave, how about something from the Peter & The Wolf album, sometime?
Avatar 10:31pm
Dave Mandl:

@pss: Which one, the rock one from the mid-'70s?
Avatar 10:32pm
Droll:

Sorry -- I was in the kitchen, you already know you compete with dinner time.

Of course Percy is one of the great players I was talking about, I'm actually generous with respect for bassists. I even like my own fretless playing. (Droll) Humor doesn't always carry through the internetz.

You may most certainly play Brand X, you're well below you usual prog/fusion balance so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
pacific standard simon:

Yeah, with Eno as the wolf. NOT the Bowie one.
Avatar 10:35pm
Dave Mandl:

I'd completely forgotten about that record. Not sure if FMU has a copy. I definitely don't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
pacific standard simon:

We haven't discussed the return of the drummer special, lately, and this makes me wonder... why not do a bassist special edition of World of Echo?
Avatar 10:37pm
Dave Mandl:

Funny, but the subject of a second drum special came up just yesterday, because I saw Irwin. A bass special might be testing people's tolerance, though of course I'd love to do one.
Avatar 10:38pm
Dave Mandl:

I'd focus on things like Jack Casady's opening bass note on the first Jefferson Airplane record.
Avatar 10:41pm
Droll:

I'm so glad the station's undisputed thunder-tubs master, Bryce, will be on the next drum special, and it's so soon!
  10:41pm
ttrish:

Drum special2. Yeah!
Maybe you could make the bounds a bit porous and allow for a bit of bass?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
pacific standard simon:

Don't be too cautious; there's a lot of us former bass players out there.

Casady is a big yes. We discussed Charlie Haden, I believe. Plenty more favorites.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm

Dave, glad to hear the record fair went well. I went on my 30th bday, a long time ago. Bought my Chris Ware 'FMU t-shirt there. This is some nice right here...
Avatar 10:57pm
Droll:

Mandl, You already posed as a drummer because you're just a bassist. Things go downhill quickly...

Rockin' Roy into Parmegiani was a gearshift.
Avatar 10:59pm
Dave Mandl:

Blame my parents for not allowing me to get a drumset. That's why I became a bassist. Come to think of it, they wouldn't allow me to get a bass either, but I bought one anyway.
  11:00pm
fascinoma:

wonderful show tonight, Dave. thanks for the Parmegiani.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

Also, there's nothing at all that I like about Queen, aside from bassist John Deacon, whom I adore. Also Martin Gordon, of Sparks (Island Records version). EFD will know.
Avatar 11:05pm

My 1966 Ludwig Pearl/Zildjian Cymbals/Gretsch accessories drum set came a a result of a desperate bribe from my parents. Best deal I may ever have made with them, come to think of it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm

Regarding Jack Casady, I'd go for that first note at the beginning of "House At Poohneil Corners", the Yggdrasil bass, as it was said.

My other idol on bass was Paul Gray, of Eddie & The Hot Rods.

There are a few Cerrones, though the disco Cerrone was the king.

I'll never trust anything out of Mandl's mouth ever again.

@pss: Seriously, listen to when Casady comes in at the beginning of "Blues from an Airplane." Four little notes, but you can tell it's a master at work.

Casady's playing on "After Bathing at Baxter's" generally is the best.
