I'll be the judge of that.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:05pm G:

I suppose it's sheer coincidence that exactly at 3PM Weds. afternoon Ken tweeted:

Radio Personalities are Number Three on the List of Most Psychopathic Professions
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:07pm Sean D. Daily:

Hello everyone. Strong start, Irwin.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:07pm common:

we call our cat mavey gravy. yep.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:08pm rrg:

Ken exaggerates only a little. The list he refers to mentions "Media (TV/Radio") as No. 3.

Also, in the case of WFMU, in only a few cases can it really be termed a "profession".
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:08pm rrg:

I like that both "flying" and "colors" are misspelled.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:09pm G:

consistency, rrg.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:10pm G:

I'm planning on being done with work by 4. I can't work depressed :)
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:10pm Sean D. Daily:

@rrg: "Colours" is an English/Canadian spelling. But "flyying"? YouTube sez it's legit: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:11pm Droll:

rrg, Two Y's and superfluous U's are British spelling. And E at the end, as in Yye Olde Towne Centre.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:11pm Irwin:

Australian, mate.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:12pm rrg:

So, I see this is a crowd in which jokes have to be explained.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:12pm Sean D. Daily:

I stand sort of corrected, Irwin. Loved that wall-of-guitars sound.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:13pm common:

wow. this is great.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:13pm Droll:

I stand corrected: ǝɹʇuǝɔ ǝuʍoʇ ǝplo ǝʎ⅄
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:15pm G:

It's definitely Wednesday afternoon.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:16pm G:

That's better than standing autocorrected.

I owe Droll an email. After I'm done working this afternoon/evening... Been soooooo busy lately...
  Wed. 11/20/13 3:18pm Peer Goose:

rrg: I don't understand, please elabourate
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:19pm Droll:

G, No worries, it's more fun to make fun of Irwin in real-time together right in front of him, anyhow. I found his Airwave Idols card and was going to use that for this week's fodder.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:22pm G:

what's a "rack on tour"?
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:28pm Andrew Waterloo:

G, it's one those french words that adults start using when the kids are around.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:29pm rrg:

I can't remember the last time I heard a cover song that had such a COMPLETELY different feel from the original.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:31pm G:

did he say "beware the pennies on your eyes"???
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:32pm rrg:

I blinked and missed that. But it wouldn't surprise me.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:32pm Droll:

From the back Irwin's card:
Day Job: "Tedious ideologue with a hustle."
First song played on radio: Lee Michaels, "Hello"
Personal Heroes: Jean Shepherd, Lou D'Antonio, Joe Frank, The Dirty Duck.
Record playing when virginity lost: Will advise, if and when.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:33pm Dr. Goot:

I believe the correct lyric is "Declare the pennies on your eyes."
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:37pm G:

Right, goot. I think he was working by ear off the record and mondegreened himself. Maybe he never declared anything on his taxes, got zinged by The Leviathan, and that's why he did that cover :)
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:38pm Droll:

Have mercy, R. ZZ...
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:38pm Dr. Goot:

Aha, got it G!
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:39pm MenfussMike:

this is annoying
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:45pm G:

a downer? YOU JEST.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:49pm rrg:

I'm a little cranky about this one. I prefer the original Cole Porter recording, just him singing and playing the piano. This feels too revisionist to me. Though I like Vince Giordano in other contexts.
Wed. 11/20/13 3:49pm Listening Out There:

hmm. this vince giordano is contemporary music, with vintage cole porter singing on top? is that it?
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:50pm rrg:

That's right, LOT. The original Cole Porter recording is also available.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:50pm Irwin:

RRG: No vintage recordings were harmed in the making of this contemporary mix.
  Wed. 11/20/13 3:51pm as:

what recent (?) movie had that song (anything goes) in it? reminds me if something
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:51pm rrg:

Yes, it's true. The remake doesn't delete the original. "But still."
  Wed. 11/20/13 3:52pm Webhamster Henry:

It did sound like Cole Porter visits A Prairie Home Companion.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:52pm MenfussMike:

this is not annoying
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:53pm G:

@WH: And all the remixes are above average.
Wed. 11/20/13 3:54pm Listening Out There:

...and all the DJs are good looking. Yeah, right...
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:56pm Droll:

[pointing to my avatar, showing just how super-handsome hippie-wizard looking Irwin really is]
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:58pm Irwin:

Artwork on that card by guest SPORT MURPHY.
Wed. 11/20/13 3:58pm Listening Out There:

@Droll: Worth noting that the avatar has a misspelling. Make it "Airwave Idle" instead.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 3:59pm G:

@Droll, On closer examination, I think the card is Irwin saying he is not a dirty hippy, he's a clean hippy, or maybe a terminally ironic hippy.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:00pm Droll:

G, Exactly: He's a hippy.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:01pm Guido (Cologne):

Just my ten cents to the Cole Porter CD:
The cover of the CD claims something like "it's authentic as the compsoer wanted it to sound like". And the CD is anything but this.

There are theese remixes (which is an intersting exeriment, nothing to say against) and all those jazz-versions which are nice. But the content of the CD is nothing what the cover claims for. It could be really annoying if it wasn't a cheapo anyway. I actually purchased it in order to get something authentic. Fortunately the were still copies from the Naxos Label circulating.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:04pm G:

[braces himself]
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:04pm Carmichael:

Hi Irwin & Joe. Sorry I'm late. Wait, no I'm not.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:04pm Droll:

Joe Frank card back:
Guilty Pleasure: Driving fast
Record playing when virginity lost: Miles Davis, "Kind of Blue"
Personal Heroes: Jean Shepherd, Steven Post
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:06pm Sean D. Daily:

A CONDOM GONDOLA.

Oh, come on, admit that you'd pay money to see that.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:06pm G:

JF was never *kind of* blue.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:07pm Irwin:

Laura Lindgren is vacuuming the main studio. Bless her heart.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:08pm Pine:

Awesome just in time for Joe Frank
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:08pm Ike:

"The windows, of course, looked out over an eight-lane highway." Genius.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:09pm Droll:

Irwin is the station's Tom Sawyer of DJ duties.
  Wed. 11/20/13 4:14pm Erich Zann:

I remember when Irwin used to play music, back in the day. It was awesome.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:15pm dale:

joe frank is awesome
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:15pm Uncle Michael:

I'll always love my mama.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:19pm Carmichael:

Kurt Gottschalk started the whole "music is boring" trend. I blame him.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:21pm G:

JF has music. Listen to that :p
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:22pm G:

Doctor Pornstein?
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:23pm G:

little known fact that he's too ashamed of to include: Joe made her do the vacuuming
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:23pm Peteski:

I'm wondering where this is headed...
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:25pm Sean D. Daily:

Less Joe Frank! More bickering old married couple!
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:25pm G:

that guy sounded like Archie Bunker reincarnated
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:26pm Droll:

Peteski, I know where they're headed, I wonder about how far it will get. A notable difference between happy and sad endings is a happy ending can't always be made happier, but you can always make a sad ending sadder.

Proof: Joe Frank. Q.E.D.
  Wed. 11/20/13 4:26pm jan:

Anyone ready for some Mike Nichols and Elaine May?
  Wed. 11/20/13 4:30pm Shana:

Has that bit about the wetsuit ever been sampled? I swear I've heard that clip before.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:35pm G:

comprehensive, intensive promotions, to make you NUMBER ONE!!!

i just had to type that out.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:35pm rrg:

I'm always ready for Nichols and May.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:36pm Carmichael:

I'm looking for my go-go boots so I can join in.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:37pm G:

I assume the check cleared.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:41pm dale:

i have a few dora hall records, the 'once upon a tour' album is a gem. her husband ran the solo drink cup company and her records were premiums.
  Wed. 11/20/13 4:43pm Robert:

I know I've brought this up before, but your curator guests might want to obtain at least the passages Jean Shepherd once played from a live industrial presntation on disposable surgical gowns.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:44pm crateslinger:

That's Frank Sinatra!
  Wed. 11/20/13 4:45pm Robert:

Do 45 rpms given by pharmaceutical detail men to physicians count as industrials? I've got one of those for a cough syrup.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:46pm G:

Monsanto used to give my dad albums when he was an automotive engineer in Michigan in the 60s. They were anthologies, though, with ads just on the cover and liner notes. One of them was the first place I ever heard big band music.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:47pm Webhamster Henry:

@G that's right, sometimes companies put out albums of anthologies as presents.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:47pm Webhamster Henry:

Hey, is this Jack Fletcher singing?
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:48pm efd:

"Keep your parchment and papyrus / for just one thing am I desirous." Love it!
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:48pm dale:

firestone was the biggie for that, usually christmas music.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:49pm Carmichael:

I have a cassette of music from the late 70s, put out by Ford as a gift for new car buyers. I believe it was meant to illustrate the superiority of their stereo systems.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:50pm Webhamster Henry:

I have one from Traveller's Insurance that is an anthology of "rain" songs.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:50pm Uncle Michael:

I have Stan Freberg's "Omaha" running through my head.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:50pm dale:

maybe give laura a mike?
Wed. 11/20/13 4:50pm Listening Out There:

I'd listened to/enjoyed the Fresh Air interview on this. I think there was news afterward that the singer and arranger for "My Bathroom is a Private Kind of Place" had been contacted...? Would appreciate any word on that...
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:54pm dale:

these might have been performed or handed out at annual shareholder meetings, too. in my salad days i did some lavish (expensive) display work for colgate-palmolive's annual meetings. don't know if they do that sort of stuff anymore
  Wed. 11/20/13 4:55pm Robert:

Once in a while one of the funny ones escapes to a gen'l audience. 50 yrs. ago someone did an in-house parody of a Calgon Bubble Bath TV commercial (the original, not the parody, is now online) using the same sound track but substituting the adult male brand mgr. for the little girl. Somehow that got on TV, and reappeared due to popular demand on "Tonight".
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:56pm efd:

Will this program include a discussion of "We Built This Starbucks?"
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:57pm Uncle Michael:

"We Built It Shitty"
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:58pm Mike East:

Is that a real thing, efd?

Thanks for sharing these with us, Steve, Sport, and Laura. Really enjoying.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:59pm Droll:

These guys can make anything rhyme. What a lost art!
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 4:59pm northguineahills:

^What Mike said!

/Mike, feeling better?
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:00pm Carmichael:

That Plymouth announcer sounded a lot like the guy from National Lampoon's Catch It and You Keep It.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:00pm Uncle Michael:

And it goes on and on!
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:00pm G:

These Plymouths are made for drivin',
And that's just what they'll do.
One of these days these Plymouths are gonna drive all over you [descending bass line]
  Wed. 11/20/13 5:01pm paula pc:

i think efd is right re: Starbucks
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:03pm efd:

Oh I know I'm right - I've played it! More than once!
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:04pm Droll:

It'll pay off, drink after drink. The sure one: Old English 800. Oops, I mean Seagrams.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:04pm Mike East:

@ngh - keeping food and water down, so that's a plus. Made it to work today. Very sore...from lack of food, water, and also the convulsive vomiting. Just ate some rice n beans, which is a step up from saltine crackers. so far, so good. Thanks for asking!
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:04pm Uncle Michael:

I'd like to collect more product-specific promotional records...a tangentially-related area. For instance, I need a cleaner copy of Trini Lopez' Fresca record.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:05pm Uncle Michael:

The cast of Bonanza for Chevrolet is nice too.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:06pm Carmichael:

I do have an mp3 of Sammy Davis' Alka Seltzer commercial. It's a hepcat Broadway version of the plop plop fizz fizz song.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:07pm rrg:

All you record collectors make my music collection seem puny and inconsequential. Because it is.
  Wed. 11/20/13 5:07pm jan:

Were the attendees at The Seagram Distillers Distributor Meeting, 1965
imbibing. That would have helped. I've given up doing any more work so that I can focus on the lyrics as well as the discussions between the tracks.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:08pm Uncle Michael:

"Chico and the Man" for Banquet Frozen Dinners...

OK, I made that one up.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:10pm G:

If only John Lydon had sung his UK butter commercial.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:12pm northguineahills:

Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:21pm dale:

"..and cream and dream" - really?
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:22pm Uncle Michael:

I'll bet this was really something special in performance. I can see the baby-doll, the puffy frilled panties, the high-heeled slippers...
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:22pm Webhamster Henry:

Somewhere I have an air check of the show where Irwin first played this. It was a memorable show.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:23pm Webhamster Henry:

Thanks @Irwin!

This "Standard Equipment" sounds like yiddish theater, don't it?

radio? on a tractor? uh, okay.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:37pm G:

@Droll -- I heard a brand new SelectQuote radio ad while on a road trip last week. Dan and Joel may have finally gone the way of all adflesh.

G, I don't think so, someone recently left a comment on a YT video about how the ad is still running.

Why didn't the songwriter leave space for breathing? And the serial gear shifting -- there is no bottom...

Correction, this song is from the 1971-75 meeting. It's that long.
Wed. 11/20/13 5:43pm Dave in PA:

lol@penis boot
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:43pm Carmichael:

I suppose this is fate. I made my kids sit through Jesus Christ Superstar on Saturday afternoon.

@Droll: Ba-bing!
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:44pm Roberto:

So I guess I wasn't the only one who heard "penis boot."

I bet they're doing the Charleston while singing this.

Speaking of cheesy, just saw a link to George Jones's just-finished cemetery monument:

I produced this type of stuff for big corporations in the 80's, but by then they wanted things to sound like Kenny Rogers and Bruce Springsteen.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:48pm dale:

g - i'm horrified, yet i expect nothing less.
  Wed. 11/20/13 5:49pm Robert:

Damn, listening to that Coke show made me want to do what I kept threatening that we friends that gathered at Cedar Tavern do: put on a musical show. Partly it was because Nadine actually had such entertainment aspirations long ago. And we never did, and now half of us are dead.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:49pm Sean D. Daily:

Round of applause for Steve Young and Sport Murphy for rounding this material up, everyone, and for letting us have our ironic fun at their expense.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:51pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks all for a very entertaining show.
  Wed. 11/20/13 5:51pm Robert:

Yay for more free entertainment!

I hardly noticed the transition! You're like a PAMS chorus.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:55pm Fredericks:

I believe, I heard the original version of "Stronger Than Dirt" (Mummies) on Nardwar's show. Laundry detergent love song.

And silicone tastes nice and goes down smooth and the nice doctors who pump your stomach are always SO nice.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:57pm rrg:

I expect it will never happen, but it would be a very nice thing if "Incorrect Music" returned to the airwaves. At least for a while.
  Wed. 11/20/13 5:58pm Barb E.:

Incredible. Great show you guys - fantastic book, too!
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:59pm Webhamster Henry:

Nice show today folks! I don't think I can make it down on Saturday, though.
Next book: lyrics to songs you didn't think had any.

Indeed, thanks. Unquestionably, the answer.

Michelle Boule, Amy Kessler, Sport Murphy, Irwin Chusid perform faultlessly. Now to develop a new libretto to expand their repertoire.
Avatar Wed. 11/20/13 5:59pm Sean D. Daily:

Surprisingly tight performance for a bunch of volunteer DJs.

I'm very impressed. Nice talent, folks!

Looks like this now becomes the comment line for tonight's 7SD. I thought that was Don McLean singing the theme song.
  Wed. 11/20/13 6:08pm Robert:

Are The Clams named that because they hit a lot of clams when they play? (That's slang for bad notes on wind instruments.)
Avatar Thu. 11/21/13 9:01am Michael:

Great show - more please! Tractor Drivin' Man in My Bathroom!
  Thu. 12/5/13 1:47pm Francis:

Great stuff. Somehow I'd never heard of Raymond Scott's "A Man Called Brown" until today. Would love to see that album posted on the WFMU blog (fingers crossed)!
