@Bill - Pretzels Till Sunup should be the title of your autobiography. Knocking it out of the park so far today by the way.
Avatar 3:35am

Thanks Andy - I actually have two working titles (ok, now three) for my autobiography - 'contemplating baldness & acne' is one, and 'between the big dipper and mars' is the other. I may have to reconsider though.

I was born and raised in da Bronx and was a champion at playing skelly if anyone cares to challenge me. Melted crayon inside hollowed checkers were good pieces. I played ALL NYC games including ringolevio and Chinese box ball (aka Chinese handball). I don't think flipping baseball cards and curb ball were limited to NYC.

Guy in band tonight pointed out that Billy Joel and I share an embarrassment of being from Hicksville and prefer to say Leviittown. I put Levittown on my Facebook profile because more people know it. But unlike Billy Joel, I actually lived there. He just wants to sound working class but he is def.from Hicksville. A newspaper would say youre from where you went to high school and by that measure im from Hicksvile, same as Joel. I saw him play the high school there, but i didnt go to that one. sorry about all the Piano Man drivel.

CDToaster:

@Bill + KP: the Chinese box ball is the game played against a w-i-d-e wall with 4' boxes drawn vertically named, "Ace," "King," "Queen," "Jack," etc. and a pink Spaulding ball. The best player was the king of the killers which were the balls that hit the wall and ground simultaneously. Also, putting the "english" on (like with Pong) was fun, too. Remember these?

We used to race cars in the playground at skool. If you put plasticene on the underneath they had more stability and went faster. More downforce!!!! Bent axles when someone trod on them (normally a girl) tented to screw the race.
Avatar 4:17am
KP:

Andy, our mumbly peg was more close up than that. Like tricks and trying to get knife to stick in ground. The foot thing was something else, at least on Long Island and a little north of citt, where we hd a bungalow.
Avatar 4:19am
Bill Mac:

@CDToaster - OK, I stand corrected, this sound more complicated than what we used to play in Philly (called chink, which sounds like a variety of what you're talking about. Come to think of it, a chink referred to the ball that hit the base of the wall and ground simultaneously). Played a lot of handball with either a pinkie or a pimple ball

Avatar 4:24am
Bill Mac:

I think you're right Toaster - I would imagine a few of these games have been totally forgotten for at least a generation.
Avatar 4:25am
CDToaster:

Bill, since you're into handball, it just so happens that my dad won the world championship in handball at the games on Coney Island. He actually beat the existing world champion back in the mid-40's.
Avatar 4:27am
KP:

Thanks CDToaster, we did that tonight, as always. The Flamin Groovies do a nice straight forward version.
Avatar 4:28am
Bill Mac:

I was into street handball myself - I think that was known as boxball when I was coming up. You played it like baseball, with a 4 base field, but you used your hand to hit the ball. I only played REAL handball once of twice, not easy - cool that your dad beat the champ.
Avatar 4:29am
KP:

DJ Heat, who shows up on boards here, is big fan of Potty Mouth/
Avatar 4:32am
KP:

Of course Bill there is a "new" real handball. It's unknown here but played in Olympics. It's like basketball but the goal is a small one like in soccer and there is a goaltender. There are pro leagues in Europe and it's on TV alot there.
Avatar 4:34am
Andy in Berlin:

I personally used to play paddleball, but only much later. My son, was big into handball when he was in junior high and got me to play with him once, but I didn't have sneakers with me. It's hard to hold your own on the handball court in sandals. Getting your ass handed to you by an 13 year old is not fun.
Avatar 4:35am

@KP I really like that particular Potty Mouth tune

The opening band - heavy metal - were much louder than MBV probably because they had screechy guitars and the treble is a killer. i could not stay in room w/o ear plugs with them. I could with MBV but of course did use them

Best opening acts ive seen: MC5 for Boz Scaggs, the original and brand new at time Mott the Hoople for Ten Years After. Both at Stony Brook. Both unfreakingbelievable. I also saw Bruce Springsteen open for Anne Murray and he was pretty good.

This is a hilarious song. I read somewhere that they are considered to be sort of like a Fall joke band. Aparently Mark E. Smith wanted them to open for them but he didn't know how to contact them so he just started advertizing the show, and they saw it and showed up.
