By the way, the Hat already reached its new owner?
Avatar 6:27am
Jason Elbogen:

Doca--The hat still hasn't arrived at the station. I hope this is just late because of the post office and not be because WFMU did not have enough SECURITY.
  6:36am
Marmalade Kitty:

Is the hat diamond encrusted?
Avatar 6:38am
hamburger:

"this goes all the way to the top!" (hat) // tv pilot pitch: chief koofreh and the kase of the missing hat
Avatar 6:41am
Jason Elbogen:

Marmalade--the Chief put a picture of the hat on my Facebook page. The picture wasn't a very high-resolution one, though. Therefore, the possibility of a diamond-encrustacean is a tantalizing one...

Thanks Jason and hellos from Helsinki, Finland. :)
  7:00am
Juurakkotukka:

Everyone in Finland speaks pretty much perfect english. So yeah, I understand everything. :)
Avatar 7:10am
doca:

@Juurakkotukka: does people in Finland really speak Finnish? People in the Nordic countries speak so perfect English that I sometimes doubt if they still use their "mother" languages
  7:13am
Juurakkotukka:

@doca Heh...yeah we do speak finnish and swedish, which is our second language, but we start learning english at school when we are 9, plus they don't dub movies or television series in Finland, so that helps a lot as well. :)
Avatar 7:14am
doca:

But you use subtitles, don't?
  7:17am
Juurakkotukka:

@doca Yes, we use subs.
Avatar 7:19am
doca:

I once met a Finnish guy who studied 18th-century Afro-Brazilian culture for his PhD research. The way he spoke of Finland made it look like Brazil (inefficient health services, low wages and small resources for university professors etc.), but he was a really cool guy
Avatar 7:20am
doca:

But I guess being just a little bit above the poverty line is something shared by all historians worldwide (I'm a historian)
  7:28am
Juurakkotukka:

@doca I can't say anything else than positive things about Finland: free (and one of the best in the world!) education systems, free healt care and a free social ensurase for everyone. Also our nature and libraries are great! You should come and visit! :)
Avatar 7:29am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- you mean - there are civilized industrial Western countries that are not the U.S.A. that are not yet Socialist Paradises - ?!?...I may have to revise my entire political philosophy
...Oh! - Juurakkotukka @ 7:28 says it is...Disregard!...
Avatar 7:30am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that's a relief !...
Avatar 7:30am
doca:

@Juurakkotukka: yes! I've always had that image of Finland until I spoke with him, and I must say what he talked about made me at least get a more humanized and less "otherworldly perfect" image of Finland for me. But I guess he's opinion was biased because he didn't liked cold weather and he kinda despised Finnish soccer league. But anyway, I would love to visit Finland
Avatar 7:31am
Jason Elbogen:

Juurakkotukka--
I assumed Finnish people would find English hard because I heard/read that Finnish was related to Hungarian, my Grandmother was Hungarian, and she struggled with English for about 60 years.
Avatar 7:32am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Tolkien loved Finnish - that's good enough for me!...
Avatar 7:34am
ausmanx:

having just done the subtitles for a series called Hellfjord, i don't think i want to visit ANY scandinavian country. last sequence in Jim Jarmusch's NIGHT ON EARTH isn't encouraging either
Avatar 7:34am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...but he was a crazy Language Genius...
  7:35am
doca:

i guess finnish is the perfect language for the language freaks because of its 17 cases abd declinations
Avatar 7:37am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I wonder if as a North New Englander how challenging I would find the Climate of such places...Is Finland Scandinavian? The language isn't - right?
Avatar 7:38am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...seems @ FMU we're never finished discussing Finnish...
Avatar 7:40am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...or making cheap puns for that matter...
  7:40am
Juurakkotukka:

@ausmanx Hehe, good then that Finland is not a part of Scandinavia. :) And oooh this No right turns song is one of my favorites!
Avatar 7:53am
ausmanx:

ah, that old debate. geographically, northern finland is actually part of the scandinavian peninsula, and although the language groups are different, norwegians and swedes speak a fair bit of finnish, and finns speak some swedish, yes?
Avatar 7:56am
doca:

But I guess finns speak swedish because of the historical Sweden dominance of the region, the Swedish empire was one of the most powerful throughout the 16th to 18th centuries
  7:57am
Marmalade Kitty:

It's just land! lol
Avatar 7:59am

Avatar 8:01am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well - racially are the Finnish 'Scandinavian' or distinct? Or is that another can o' worms I'll be sorry I brought up?...
  8:02am
Marmalade Kitty:

indeed!
  8:05am
Daniel T. from Copenhagen:

Estonian is in the same family of languages with Finnish and Hungarian. Estonian is in fact very similar to Finnish, whereas Hungarian is more distantly related.
Avatar 8:06am
mauri:

.. and theres the karelian.
Avatar 8:07am
doca:

@Daniel: are those three languages indo-european?
Avatar 8:11am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...there's another example of a word we only use the negative of: 'nonchalant'...that means the concept of 'chalant' exists!
...ok - that's George Carlin, obviously...
  8:13am
Daniel T. from Copenhagen:

Nope. That means that English is more closely related to Hindu and Sanskrit than it is to Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian. :-)
Avatar 8:13am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Indo-Aryan...

Avatar 8:19am

...um - I know 'merde'...
Avatar 8:20am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I imagine 'kaka' has broad linguistic equivalence...
Avatar 8:24am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...this could be of practical in helping Jason write his signs...the bathroom equivalent of the plaque sent on the Voyager spacecraft
- or the proposed signs @ nuclear waste sights - w/ toxic half-lives of 300,000 years - which would need to communicate w/out reliable reference to a single language that they should *never* dig here - & not paradoxically just *attract* attention...
  8:27am
Marmalade Kitty:

Thats a German joke, Jason..
Avatar 8:28am

What's the German joke, MK?
