Live performance by Mamadou Kelly, recorded live at Lincoln Center in the Caravan for Peace concert, July 31, 2013.

Employing a nimble, melodic guitar technique and a soulful, bluesy voice, Mamadou Kelly made a name for himself playing with greats like the late Malian blues legend Ali Farka Toure. Kelly fled his home town of Niafunke for Bamako after the occupation of northern Mali in 2012 when the imposition of sharia law banned music there. Not to be stopped, he continued to hone his solo career and just released a new album in September, which more than hints at his encyclopedic knowledge of Malian music. Last summer Mamadou was a part of the Caravan for Peace concert outdoors at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park, and WFMU was fortunate to be allowed to record the whole concert. Mamadou Kelly's live set aired on Irene's show.

Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 12:14pm Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Irene. Good afternoon, and it is getting better every minute with this Pat Metheny. Thanks for that.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 12:16pm DCE:

good day, folks!
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 12:16pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Hi Irene, hello one and all
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 12:24pm common:

ello ello!
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 12:24pm mythopeic_industries:

Dawn from Faun Fables!
  Mon. 10/28/13 12:33pm van:

Terrific set!
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 12:42pm YETI BOB:

J'aime la musique malienne!
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 12:43pm Sem Chumbo:

Moi aussi, Yeti B!
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 12:49pm Irene Trudel:

Hey everybody! Just getting around to commenting myself. A head's up to you French speakers-- Mamadou Kelly talks before each song in French, and I am sadly not able to translate. If any of you wants to paraphrase in the comments, I'd appreciate it.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 12:54pm doca:

hello mrs. trudel and trudelites, just checkin' in to say i'm feeling much better since you're on the air, and that i also love malian music.
  Mon. 10/28/13 1:02pm Juurakkotukka:

Hey again Irene and the others! Autumn evenings are dark here in Finland. I sat in a train from Helsinki to Turku. Your music blends in beautifully with the lights of the small towns passin by.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:02pm Ike:

Not to mention, if there are any French speakers listening in mid-Brooklyn, esp. Flatbush, pls tune into the scumbag Haitian pirate at 90.9 FM that interferes with FMU and take down all possible identifying information, like any phone numbers they give out or info from ads, and then send it in to the FCC. They were putting out a strong signal Sat. night even to Borough Park; heard it as far away as the freaking Verrazano.
  Mon. 10/28/13 1:04pm van:

Another great set!
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:04pm KP:

Hey, Irene! That was lovely.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:05pm Sem Chumbo:

@Juurakkotukka: what a beautiful image.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:08pm KP:

BTW, this is Irene's last chance to meet her goal during the drive. It is definitely within reach within these next two hours. She is not supposed to speak of the Silent Pledge, but we can. So if you like Irene, if you love the station, now is the time to show it.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:15pm Snortley:

@Ike - The guy apparently responsible for that Creole station, Jean Idalbert, has already been warned once and and fined $10,000 by the FCC. Probably hasn't paid it, and just goes on broadcasting, and the FCC does nothing about it. Evidently, their role is to demonstrate by inaction that they actually approve and endorse such pollution of the airwaves.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:21pm βrian:

Very happy to be here. We'll continue in theme of the north of Mali. The blues of the north.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:23pm Sean in Bristol UK:

My French is pretty rusty, was listening whilst cycling home and picked up a bit, will have a go when Mamadou next talks
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:24pm Snortley:

Actually, under a recently passed NY law, he could be charged with a felony and spend time upstate at taxpayer expense. Unfortunately, the police can't be bothered; too busy chasing down pot smokers of a darker complexion.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:24pm Irene Trudel:

Hey Sem Chumbo, Sean, DCE, common, doca, mythopeic_industries, Van, Yeti Bob, Juurakkotukka, Ike and KP! glad to have you here on this beautiful autumnal day. @Ike and @Snortley, It's almost impossible to take a radio pirate down. But keep trying on WFMU's behalf.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:27pm Mike East:

oh, I understood that french...he said "Thank you very much"
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:27pm Mike East:

ok, now I'm lost.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:28pm Mike East:

good thing music is universal. great stuff, Irene, thanks for bringing it to us.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:28pm Irene Trudel:

Hey, also big thanks to those of you still pledging to WFMU's silent fundraiser! I have passed to 50% mark thanks to the generosity of Andrew, Bill and Kevin, and the cow is now mooing at the top of the page. If I can get a few more pledges the dog's tail will wag and I will have reached my show goal. Hope to do it today if possible.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:28pm βrian:

Now, we'll do Bombarra. [Something about changing one's skin with a seal. To see how the other side lives.]
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:28pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Mike, the same, I got lost after "Thank you very much"!
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:29pm Snortley:

"C'est pas necesaire," "it's not necessary," I got that. Also, "ce soir," "tonight."
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:30pm Irene Trudel:

@Mike, "Merci Boucoup" is one of the few French phrases I understand. But now you know why my French pronunciations are so poor. ;D
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:31pm βrian:

maps.google.com... By golly, if you zoom toward the roof, I think you can see the antenna.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:31pm Snortley:

Somebody a day or two ago dropped $7K on the station. Anyone else ready to raise the ante?
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:32pm Irene Trudel:

By the way, I have a lot of pictures from the Caravan for Peace Concert on my Flickr page:
www.flickr.com...
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:37pm Cory:

sweet pictures Irene
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:48pm Ike:

@Snortley, do we know the police definitely can't be bothered? Maybe someone with police connections can press for an investigation? If repeated violations are a felony under state law, that has to count for something...?
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 1:59pm KP:

NP!
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 2:01pm KP:

The Cow Moos! Now Wag the Dog! Today's the day!
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 2:07pm Bryant:

This is from the French TV show Nulle Part Ailleurs, May 2, 1996. rateyourmusic.com...
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 2:09pm Sean in Bristol UK:

This is great from the sadly missed Lou
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 2:10pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks @ Bryant! I gotta find better audio for this. Good performance from a video someone posted:
www.youtube.com...
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 2:14pm Tome:

...I knew I'd hear this one eventually on this wonderful station ! I mean where else? had to change my image too ,,, ( hold up 2 lighters ! ) ..
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 2:16pm Snortley:

Ike - Maybe writing council members could help. It's hard to say. Prosecution is discretionary; if all the rules were enforced, half the population would be in jail.
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 2:23pm KP:

Pledge! you don't have to pay now, just pledge. No cards/accounts needed!
  Mon. 10/28/13 2:26pm marc:

Is the needle stuck?
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 2:26pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Nice, Irene, Sparks are playing in Bristol next month so looking forward to that
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 2:29pm KP:

Irene is closing in! Do it!
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 2:41pm Ike:

Snortley, like you say, prosecution is discretionary, so we need a friend in the DA's office or something, right? Maybe somebody can please call somebody who knows somebody.
  Mon. 10/28/13 2:44pm Joey:

I gave money, thank you for the music and the chitta-chatta quoth mr t-abba
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 2:57pm Snortley:

My sister is an intern at a DA's office in NJ. Wouldn't do any good, though; I'm sure they're convinced she's crazy.
  Mon. 10/28/13 2:58pm van:

Great show - thank you Irene!
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 2:58pm Sean in Bristol UK:

As always, Irene, great show, thanks for the wonderful choice of music, have a great week everyone
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 3:00pm Sean in Bristol UK:

And the dog's tail is wagging, awesome
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 3:00pm zeer:

hey irene, whats that track behind you right now? ahr, i cant remember ^^
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 3:00pm KP:

Congratulations!
Avatar Mon. 10/28/13 3:04pm Ken From Hyde Park:

That's some mighty nice goal-reaching there. Congrats!
