rrg, The "legend" playing music makes people come back and buy more stuff has been demonstrated a gazillion times, most recently at the Tribeca Whole Foods. Too bad the same phenomena doesn't occur in record stores. Signals?! You're gonna play some 80's thin tie pastel jacket wearing Rush? |
Wed. 10/23/13 3:20pm

Girl Scout roundup sounds like something I'd like.
![]() |
![]() Girl Scouts get all the attention. No one cares about the 1997 recording of 12,000 Camp Fire Girls in Kalamazoo, singing narcocorridos. |

What happens when 10,000 Maniacs meet 12,000 Girl Scouts?

Wed. 10/23/13 3:28pm
Robert:
L.O.T., what I miss from Greasy Kid Stuff is when they would sneak adult material in. And by "adult" I don't mean XXX.
![]() |
Wed. 10/23/13 3:29pm
Whosondephone:
Especially the dynamics! @Robbert. |
![]() |
![]() Well, I listened to Greasy Kid Stuff. And then to The Radio Thrift Shop. Both gone now from WFMU. Only Irwin left worth listening to. |
Wed. 10/23/13 3:31pm
Listening Out There:
Robert: Yep. Anything worthwhile that's intended for kids usually has something adultish to make it palatable for the household. E.g. Bugs Bunny, Loony Toons, Peewee's Playhouse, etc.
![]() |
![]() @LOT - Add Rocky & Bulwinkle to that list. |

rrg, Stan's still on, one of FMU's best-kept secrets! The show I most miss is A440/Stochastic. |
Wed. 10/23/13 3:35pm
jan:
@robert. The girl scout chorus would be more impressive if individually miked. Consider the 40 Part Motet by Janet Cardiff with 40 singers played back through 40 loudspeakers.
Wed. 10/23/13 3:36pm
Listening Out There:
Ken - Yeah, I was thinking of that too. Oh, and hip hop.

rrg, wasn't Laura Cantrell just filling in a couple months ago? Her voice stays with me so long, it probably seems more recent than it was.
Wed. 10/23/13 4:01pm

![]() |
![]() No, steve, this one was really lighthearted. |
Wed. 10/23/13 4:57pm
Ratso:
From the horse's mouth. Joe Frank trashes his sole book: BLVR: Do you feel your work on the written page is not fully realized? You wrote a book of short stories, Queen of Puerto Rico— JF: I’m glad you mentioned that. I hated that book. BLVR: Why? JF: It just didn’t play. If you took any of my radio shows and you took the music out of them, they wouldn’t be remotely the same thing. Music is really important.

![]() |
![]() ...that's right Carm. |
![]() |
![]() ...you got stones to call yourself 'Coltrane' anything...okay track & all... |
![]() |
![]() The Loss Leaders were a series of bargain-price albums, $1 per LP, mostly double-LPs plus a few single-LP and one triple-LP collections, available only by mail order (no record club involved). They were intended to promote Warner/Reprise artists who might otherwise have been overlooked, liberally sprinkled with selections by more well-known artists. Some real rarities and gems in there, along with clever and entertaining liner notes, many written by what's-his-name who is/was Dr. Demento (though not yet that at the time). |

![]() No, Droll, these were specially-prepared and packaged collections, unique. To young me they were very exciting and influential.
