Lurv Cape Verde sounds. Morning Meghan. I'm only here for the first hour, crazy day awaits!

hehe.... it's a very worldly day today!

Quite a bit of coastal rhythms today! That atmosphere produced these mellow sounds, I presume!

Oh no crazy days in a good way or bad? Hopefully good... though bad if you miss 2 hours!

Lotsa meetings and the company Service Awards Dinner tonight.

Not that it has anything to do with Cape Verde, but the other day I noticed this written on the signs around AMNH "Pa fimen nan pak la". Took me a little bit to decipher. Hatian Creole for "no smoking in the park" Targeting all the stroller nannies I guess

Great song by Star Band. Cuban style music was really popular in Senegal (and Congo and other parts of West and Central Africa) mid-century... then Senegalese pop music evolved into more of its own distnict style, particularly Youssou N'Dour's mbalax; in fact you can kinda follow that progression in his music thanks to various reissue cds. (Youssou in fact started his career with the Star Band as a teenager.) In recent years there's been a bit of a Latin music retro-revival in African music. In particular, 1970s band Orch. Baobab is a Latin-tinged Senegalese group that has had big revival and toured North America and Europe in recent years.

To see how far the Senegalese influence spread, check out Japan's "Kingdom Afrocks"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27am

a grey one huh? That is the joys of leaving early in the morning, it's still dark out. Though there were a couple walking down the street fighting at 5 am....

- is not a 'Griot' also a story-teller - almost a traditional history-keeper? Perhaps there are sort-of 'degrees' of it - &/or somewhat different meanings...

I was mentioning bands from Sierra Leone last week and forgot about our own nearby outfit, Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang (he's from Sierra Leone and based in DC, the rest of the band is American kids based in Brooklyn, but they do a good job playing the music). Also Sierra Leone All-Stars of course...

Side note for me, the gateway song that pointed me down the afro-polyrhythm road was "I Zimbra" from Talking Heads back in Junior High.
