Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 5:41pm Doug Schulkind:

Literally.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 5:42pm Jeff Golick:

Noted: Elvis Presley-grade camera cropping.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 5:43pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff
Fela's pelvis only fits on a wide-angel lens.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 5:50pm Gary:

Who's that smooth-lookin fela?
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 5:50pm Doug Schulkind:

See the playlist & chat with Fela listeners...
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 5:58pm Artie:

Kuti Kuti Kuti goes the Charo.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey-Oooo, Artie!
Avatar    Tue. 10/15/13 6:00pm hyde:

well, alright. this should make for good "music to bake bread by" music
Avatar    Tue. 10/15/13 6:02pm Carmichael:

To "make" bread by.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:04pm Jeff Golick:

To bake by. Music!
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello and greetings hyde and Carmichael!
Avatar    Tue. 10/15/13 6:08pm listener james from westwood:

baking bread is music to my ears! and nose!
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:08pm northguineahills:

Ok, I put in the comments of my pledge that I wanted to share the wealth amongst many djs. Fingers crossed, the March marathon I'll be able to do more.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:10pm Doug Schulkind:

@NGH
I can confirm that your note is attached to your pledge. And speaking of which: T H A N K S ! !
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:12pm northguineahills:

(hmmm, $1.25/every active WFMU dj, would that work?) (fuzzy random math there)
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:13pm Jeff Golick:

No one is koola.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:14pm northguineahills:

(didn't figure Ichiban, b/c it seems that stream is random half the time I tune in).
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:15pm Doug Schulkind:

@NGH
The fuzzier the betterer.

Your pledge dollars all go into the same steaming cauldron. Each different stream (main WFMU, GTDR, Ichiban, etc.) is but a separate wisp of smoke, cirlicuing to the sky.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Into your great ears in the sky, I mean.
Avatar    Tue. 10/15/13 6:20pm hyde:

i thought smoke got in your eyes
Avatar    Tue. 10/15/13 6:20pm Carmichael:

I like Fela Kuti and all, but sometimes I wonder if he cares what key he's playing in.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:20pm Doug Schulkind:

We charge extra for that, hyde.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:23pm Doug Schulkind:

@Carmichael
I think we need to adjust what we think of as standard "keys." Fela was actually an incredibly strict taskmaster of his band. He would punish bandmembers if they played out of tune or rhythm.
Avatar    Tue. 10/15/13 6:25pm Carmichael:

I was thinking that as I posted the comment, Doug. "Key" is a necessarily relative term, I now realize. Like the playing of Miles Davis or Thelonius Monk.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:30pm Doug Schulkind:

I played this track, Lai Se, earlier in the show. Aren't I dandy?
Avatar    Tue. 10/15/13 6:35pm listener james from westwood:

not unlike james brown with his meting out of bandmember fines, sounds like.
this fela show is accelerating me toward the end of this densely typeset 326-page psych encyclopedia i'm proofing!
Avatar    Tue. 10/15/13 6:38pm Carmichael:

enpsychlopedia. Cool.
Avatar    Tue. 10/15/13 6:40pm listener james from westwood:

i just found a reference to an article in a journal issue i production-edited in 1997. get me my geritol.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:45pm Doug Schulkind:

@LJFW
Floating around on the interwebs is an acknowlegment page for an encyclopedia of Broadway I edited that was published in 1985-6. Save me some Geritol.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:46pm Artie:

If a fisherman stopped rowing, (as unlikely as it seems)I wonder what harbor his little boat would end up in?
Avatar    Tue. 10/15/13 6:49pm listener james from westwood:

plenty of geritol for us all!
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:49pm Doug Schulkind:

"The Shoes of the Fisherman's Wife Are Some Jiveass Slippers" — Charles Mingus
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:50pm Artie:

I've always loved Mingus, so very much.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:51pm Doug Schulkind:

What Artie said.
Avatar Tue. 10/15/13 6:58pm Doug Schulkind:

I love the quote from "Salt Peanuts" opening this track! Earlier, a trumpeter quoted "The Saint Go Marching In." Wonderful!
Avatar    Tue. 10/15/13 6:58pm hyde:

thanks Doug!
