speaking of krauty synthy music, I did backline for Tangerine Dream last week. Those dudes had, like, 14 keyboards.
Avatar 5:23pm
steve:

thats awesome Mike. are they still using much vintage analog stuff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
Mike East:

nah, steve. korg radias (or radii, I guess, they had like 3 of 'em), some nords, Roland V synth, Access Virus...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
Mike East:

though the original request had some Creamware stuff which looked like it was remade old synths, like prophets and stuff
Avatar 5:31pm
steve:

cool... after all the stories ive heard about synths going out of tune mid concert in the 70s, it doesnt surprise me that many of those artists are all digital in concert now
Avatar 🎸 5:32pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

good question.
what the hell AM i on?
...or should be?

@Rev. Turnip Druid that is a good question. O_o
Avatar 5:36pm
northguineahills:

I think the good Rev is on his bum (maybe his feet)
Avatar 5:37pm
the glowing one:

Speaking of analog synths going out of tune I wonder if you can counteract this phenomena with smarter electronic designs. I guess not all synthesizers back then were designed to be played on stage but rather in a studio.
Avatar 🎸 5:39pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Driven mad by meetings, conference-calls, and suchlike plastic urgencies. Brief respite in the headphones...
Avatar 🎸 5:40pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

And what's all this about analog synths going out of tune? Why inna hell should they be IN tune in the first place? Clearly I've missed much, o my brothers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
Mike East:

also, a lot of these old synth guys were nerds who liked being on the cutting edge of technology, and still do, so they're gonna try to keep up with what's happening now, rather than wistfully looking back on how cool that old stuff is/was. See efd's interview with the dude from OMD.
Avatar 5:43pm
the glowing one:

Ah well, OMD. Fantastic sound, cheesy pop songs.
Avatar 5:44pm
the glowing one:

But yeah, the analog synths of today are probably top notch engineering-wise. I wouldn't want to bother with old equipment either.
Avatar 🎸 5:47pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

I adore my old moog MG1 (the radio shack model) but there's so much cracked solder in that thing it's 50% tone & 50% bitter crackle. As charming as it is annoying.
Avatar 5:48pm
Carmichael:

I'm still using my Boss ME-50 floor unit, complete with flange and overdrive pedals wired in separately. It's kinda fun, actually, stomping on things to get the right sound. My Inline unit sits on the amp, giving me those puppy dog eyes ...
Avatar 5:50pm
steve:

thats true. the funny thing about Paul Humphries comments about digital synths sounding the same is that i was able to guess correctly which tracks were recent digital productions every time for the whole 3 hours (i don't know their catalog very well)... not that that difference necessarily warrants tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of pounds of gear...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm
Scott Williams:

thanks for the company and fine synthy & otherwise chatter, everyone! see you next week.
