The image = Pledge drive swag?
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:07pm Caryn:

Yeah, the retro rotor works without "massage by an attendant", but you can still get that on the side just for fun.

I almost suspect this is the male version of women's "shoulder massagers".
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:08pm rrg:

You can read that?

Oh, right. You're in your 30s. I forgot.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:09pm Sean D. Daily:

So... 5/8" chuck? 1/2"? Variable speed reversible?
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:10pm Caryn:

@rrg: well, I'm close to legally blind, but I got really strong glasses...
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:11pm rrg:

Stereo! Put on your headphones. It's like a throwback.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:11pm Caryn:

Has any WFMU DJ already done a tribute to Phil Chevron of The Pogues?
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:12pm rrg:

"Musical Interpretations of the Paintings of Paul Klee". I'm sorry, but that sounds like bullshit.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:13pm Caryn:

Of course, Deed Runlea will probably do something...
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:16pm Sean D. Daily:

@rrg: Yeah, total bullshit. THIS is a musical interpretation of the paintings of Paul Klee - www.youtube.com...
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:16pm Droll:

rrg, Thx for the tip. Anything even remotely resembling the Belew-Fripp or Partridge-Gregory or Gentle Giant hocketing with hard-panned counterpoint is ear candy to me.

To quote the picture, "This picture tells it's own story." 'nuff said.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:19pm Caryn:

@rrg: well, Klee's work is known for referencing his musician side. As Rainer Maria Rilke said, "I would have guessed that on many occasions his drawings were transcriptions of music." So, I suppose TNG is just turning the transcriptions back into music?

...Or maybe I'm just spouting bullshit too. Who knows?
  Wed. 10/9/13 3:20pm ee:

welcome back Irwin! hope all is well!
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:21pm Caryn:

Okay, has a WFMU DJ done a tribute to Keyboard Cat already? Sheesh, the deaths are just piling on...

  Wed. 10/9/13 3:25pm dc waters:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: They don't, but Daisy may.

it's all those bushies, burn them all!
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:27pm rrg:

That was a big hit, that Li'l Abner. A strip remembered by hardly anyone. Like Pogo.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:28pm Parq:

rrg, that's about all Al Capp and Walt Kelly had in common.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:28pm Caryn:

Hey, knew that was Stubby Kaye!

And yikes, Paul Klee's wikipedia page lists a bucketload of musical interpretations of his works. Apparently, it's a popular pastime.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:28pm Carmichael:

Whoa, I remember the old TV show Shenanigans.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

If any listeners would care to take pity on my woeful fundraising support level, please click the widget atop the playlist. THANKS in advance. Money all goes to WFMU's new public performance space.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:31pm Carmichael:

People may be hesitant to give because they think it will become Andy Richter's new Komedy Klubhouse.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:31pm Caryn:

It has to be said, the "Li'l Abner" musical is very good. Of course, I suspect that it would've been even better if they'd hired Dick Shawn as originally planned.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:32pm Sean D. Daily:

Wish I could, Irwin, but I just moved and money's tight. I haven't been able to contribute to ANY DJ this month.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:34pm rrg:

I think Edie Adams was in that show (as Daisy Mae).
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:34pm Parq:

That's it. I'm making a pledge right now, Ol' Pal Irwin. I was going to anyway, but now that I've seen Stubby Kaye and Paul Klee discussed in the same comment on your playlist, nothing can stand in my way.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...buttplug...performance space...no, nevermind...

...Got the FMU mailer & will probably do it that way. Love too many Programs to even bother spreading my pittance around - altho' I'm thinking I might survive the $15/month level - & I forgot to get a career too, Folx !...
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:34pm Caryn:

@Carm: hey, if it became Andy Richter's Komedy Klubhouse, it would be great. It's the other Andy people are worried about.

@rrg: she was indeed. As was Julie Newmar.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:34pm Ike:

Re: 3:25: Busy working. Used all my break time talking cats on Ken's playlist. Maybe will defend Head Start etc. later.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:35pm Irwin:

I'll ask again. Later. On second thought, now. No, later.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:36pm Caryn:

Currently paying off 3 WFMU pledges, but will have to check if I can afford even a little pledge this month, Irwin. If I can, I will.
  Wed. 10/9/13 3:37pm raboof:

honestly FMU has gone to the well once too often ,,, make do with the space you have.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:37pm G:

15 was the average age at puberty when that ad was made. Nuff said.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:37pm Sean D. Daily:

You're definitely ambivalent, Irwin. Truly, your indecisiveness is decisive.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:38pm G:

Unguent chamber??? My dinner is ruined.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:38pm G:

Definitively indecisive.

The name of the place is, I Like It Like That.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

If nothing else, I looked @ a Julie Newmar picture today...
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:40pm Irwin:

@Sean: It's true. Well, maybe not true, but close to the truth. Or perhaps unlikely. In point of fact, it's a load of rubbish, really. I think.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:42pm G:

I have to think about that.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:43pm Caryn:

Should I be disturbed that I recognised this track from the opening chords alone?
  Wed. 10/9/13 3:43pm paula pc:

diggin it, absolutely
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:43pm rrg:

Hole-Hearted? That old thing?

What a nice idea.
  Wed. 10/9/13 3:43pm as:

wow! haven't heard this song in ages!!
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:44pm Wretch:

The song was greatly improved when they changed the lyric from "congenital defect".
  Wed. 10/9/13 3:44pm phat:

Whatever anybody says. I really like this song (and other Extreme songs).
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:44pm Carmichael:

Whoops Caryn, that was a Freudian slip, I guess. I'm all whacked out on cold medicine. I meant Andy what's-his-face from FMU.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:44pm Droll:

Nuno is currently an A-List sideman, plays for Rihanna and gazillions of session dates. He's a total pro.

The hole in my heart was filled with silk sutures when I was 3. You is too late.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:46pm Caryn:

"There's a hole in my heart that can only be filled by you..." said Gary Cherone to his cardiothoracic surgeon.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:46pm G:

This sounds like an early Magnetic Fields arrangement, totally salute to casio...
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:47pm Caryn:

@Carm: heh, I know.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Nuno - explains that capable git-tar...
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:49pm Caryn:

@Droll: well, he was already an A-List sideman back then. Janet Jackson's "Black Cat" comes to mind.
  Wed. 10/9/13 3:49pm phat:

Really, hole-hearted is a nearly perfect pop record. Thanks for playing that Irwin.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 3:51pm Caryn:

@phat: well, the whole Pornograffiti album is pretty darn awesome. And to my mind, mostly at odds with its title (in terms of style).
  Wed. 10/9/13 3:52pm Nisus:

hole-hearted, longlong time ago, thanks!
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:53pm rrg:

C'mon, it was 1991. Not so long ago. I even remember that year.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 3:59pm Dan B From Upstate:

1991 is equidistant to today as it is to the moon landing.

Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 4:12pm Caryn:

To pre-emptively try to stave off the depression that Joe Frank often brings up (and to coincide with the medical device at the top of the page), here's an uplifting medical story: www.news.com.au...

Hee!
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 4:33pm Droll:

Is Jokerfan going through all the staff in order of seniority? Kinda like "This Is Your Life" set to music (and sourced on Wikipedia).
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 4:34pm Irwin:

I'll bet TP&OJF could write a song about ANYone. Who wants to bet? I've got ten dollars here that says he can do it.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 4:35pm rrg:

Only a few of us are old enough to actually remember "This Is Your Life".
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 4:35pm Station Mgr Ken:

Wow, the Jokerfan just made my YEAR!
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 4:36pm Carmichael:

How about me? Can he write a song about me, based solely on the info contained in my posts? I'll see your ten bucks, and raise you ten. It'll all go to the Komedy Klubhouse anyway.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 4:37pm rrg:

I'd love it if he wrote a song about, say, me.

No, scratch that. It might miss the mark and upset me. And he'd have to do too much research (I have no Wikipedia page) so it wouldn't be worth his while. Though I'll bet Wild Man Fischer would have done it. For a quarter.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 4:37pm Droll:

I wouldn't take that bet, but I would like to hear Jokerfan's tribute to Wesley Willis.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 4:38pm steve:

he only writes about people he likes, no?
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 4:38pm G:

@rrg: He always says "nice" and "great" etc. You wouldn't be *terribly* annoyed...

  Wed. 10/9/13 4:46pm Marmalade Kitty:

This sounds a lot like The Cardiacs :)
  Wed. 10/9/13 4:46pm Ted:

First Extreme, now Phil-led Genesis!! And the scary thing is I've enjoyed both!! aahhhhhhHH!
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 4:48pm Droll:

As much as I dearly love Phil, I wish I had as nice things to say about his later career as I did Nuno's. Phil's son has a prog album out now that sounds VERY much like this era Genesis.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 4:48pm rrg:

I have a confession to make. I've discovered a foolproof way to avoid the Joe-Frank-induced blues. What I do is...I don't listen to these segments. I go away and work or make a cup of tea or something, and then I come back in a half-hour just in time for the return to Irwin jollity.

And it's excellent tea (but it always is).
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 4:49pm rrg:

This is from this century, right?
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 4:51pm G:

@rrg: release date May 14, 2013
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 4:52pm rrg:

I'll take that as a yes.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 4:53pm Caryn:

And now I realise what's bugged me about this singer's voice but that I couldn't quite nail down: he sounds like Peter Gabriel when he goes for the loud bits.

Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 5:00pm Caryn:

Oh look, Candi Staton is on tv. Sorry, Irwin, turning down the volume on you for a moment.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 5:00pm rrg:

Hey, was that an abbreviated station ID? Did anyone else hear it start with "Rockland County" and leave out what usually precedes that?
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 5:00pm Carmichael:

No one plays the sax anymore. This has to be from the late 80s.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 5:01pm Droll:

What's TV? Some new kind of Facebook?
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 5:02pm Caryn:

And then Irwin ups the ante by putting this song on. Now I'm playing Pong with my volume buttons.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 5:04pm Caryn:

The drunken stylings of Oscar Levant certainly deserve to have a song written about them.

That song always reminds me of Liz because she covered SubLawns with the H&M.

Much like David Bowie loves bands when they play it hard, I love ragtime when they play it slowly.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 5:51pm rrg:

Another collection that I have to get, or at least seek out. Cut it out, Irwin.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 5:52pm Irwin:

The Neilsen collection is 4 cds, everything Joplin composed. It's available digitally.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 5:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah - don't know much but this seems different then you often hear Joplin played...
  Wed. 10/9/13 5:55pm dc waters:

Depends on the song. Solace is always played at that speed AFAIK. Others are more of a romp.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 5:56pm Droll:

Yeah Irwin, cut it out. I want you out of here by 6pm! And be polite to the Prog Police Officers (essential federal employees who are not furloughed) waiting outside the studio who want to talk to you about Trick of the Tail. Of course, all you need to do is show them that gorgeous Hipgnosis gatefold and they'll let you go.
Avatar    Wed. 10/9/13 5:57pm rrg:

That's it? All right, then. Thanks, Mr. Irwin.

The rest of you, write if you get work. See yez.
