van:

![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 12:14pm
Shaun(ununun):
DCE: Love Mary Halvorson. That album actually came out on Firehouse 12(?). She uses a lot of whammy, while playing I think. |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 12:16pm
kat330:
@DCE: Yep, and overdue. @Van: Hey! Are you going west young man, anytime soon? Yes, Halvorson is sublime. |
![]() |
![]() Hi Everybody! Glad you're enjoying the tunes today. @Shaun(uununun), you're right but it's actually both. I'll list the other though. |
Mon. 9/23/13 12:20pm

Mon. 9/23/13 12:23pm
kat330:
How's your weather in the UK? Best thing I could wish everyone here is to be having the glorious day we're having (and been having) here in the Louisville metro area. |
![]() |
![]() Heya Irene and the gang |
![]() |
![]() i love this BoC track |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 12:26pm
kat330:
This Lynch is off the hook—um, the rope—too. |
Mon. 9/23/13 12:27pm
van:
Oh hi kat, just saw your question...you never know. I keep trying and wanting to, and I've been tantalized recently by someone telling me to hold on for something soon in the Dallas area...
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 12:29pm
kat330:
Well, best of luck to you, Van. I'll say a little prayer as a member of the congregation of the Everlasting Light of Hope. ;) |
![]() |
![]() @Kat, I think we could be heading into a possible Indian Summer, weather looking decent for the week. @Steve, that BoC track was a cracker |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 12:34pm
kat330:
Wonder if Coryell came up with that title when at the dentist .. or while brushing his teeth. |
![]() |
![]() @kat330: what's the everlasting light of hope? |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 12:37pm
kat330:
@doca: Um, my pretend, personal church. :) |
![]() |
![]() @Kat, just going of on a non-musical tangent and I know you will be watching this sometime in the near future but episode 14 of Breaking Bad which was shown last Sunday was in my humble opinion the best hour of television I have ever seen, this series has gone through the stratosphere, |
![]() |
![]() You mean as personal-only-to-you-church or your personal religion? I like personal churches as in that first sense of the word, and yours has a specially beautiful name |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 12:40pm
kat330:
Ooooh, Sean, yes, please tread carefully here! I was listening to a local station on Saturday when a DJ started talking about last Sunday's BB on his mic break, and I didn't take any chances. Turned it off for a few just to be on the safe side. Guess he was mic Break-ing bad for me. :) |
![]() |
![]() thanks for a love supreme! so good. |
![]() |
![]() not going to say a word, I will be in mourning this time next wek when this series finishes, I am so blown away that on my trip over next April I have used some air miles to fly down to Albuquerque to pay homage! |
Mon. 9/23/13 12:43pm
Marmalade kitty:
Hello Irene & Irenians :) Happy birthday JC
Mon. 9/23/13 12:43pm
van:
Thanks for this Coltrane!
![]() |
![]() John Coltrane, nice |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 12:43pm
kat330:
@doca: As in your first part. I've strayed several times over the decades, when it seemed the world was a hopeless place, but somehow I always return. Here's a link to a Pastis piece that pretty much sums me up: tinyurl.com... |
![]() |
![]() Hello Irene! |
![]() |
![]() Disappoptimist . . . you could put me there too! |
![]() |
![]() I always tell folks I am a pessimistic optimist. |
![]() |
![]() Seems to be a balance there . . . |
![]() |
![]() @kat330: hahah great, I guess the personal churches are the only way to be a happy disappoptimist. But we sure could all pray to John Coltrane |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 12:58pm
kat330:
@Davee: Well, I was a die-hard optimist growing up and a staunch environmentalist. Then the late 60s assassinations and then the Reagan administration and well, sh*t happens. |
![]() |
![]() there's a cartoon by Laerte, a brazilian cartoonist, from his series on God where there's a woman crying and she finds Him and she gets angry that He could not lend a hand to her. So God replies: "If you can't have my hand, at least I could offer you my shoulder". I always thought that was a very poignant view of religion, specially personal ones. |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 12:59pm
kat330:
Yeah, let's all get on the Coltrane soul train -- whooooo-hoooo! :) @Irene: From your playlist so far, one might wonder if it's your anniversary or somesuch? It's most love-ly whatever the inspiration. |

Shaun(ununun):
I've been away, making brunch flax pancakes. Irene: I had a feeling Improvised Communications had to have been involved with the album for you to list it but I couldn't find anything querying it on DDG. But they did blog on their wordpress about her being in the Firehouse studio for that record. I just know that she's a resident artist for the Firehouse 12 label and all of her trio/quintet/ and now septet releases have come out via them. |
![]() |
![]() @shaun: I guess maybe the CD version came out by Firehouse 12 and the LP on some other label. F12 don't usually releases LP's (vinyls), but they're doing it for some of Mary Halvorson's releases. |
Mon. 9/23/13 1:06pm
van:
Beautiful set | |

![]() Oops! Don't try to purchase a track on iTunes while you're playing out of iTunes. (DJ 101) |

kat330:
Just got a call from ATT (we're still having periodic connection outages) asking if it would be OK if they "take down our service" right now to check things out. A tribute to how much I'm enjoying your show, Irene, I replied: Only after 3 pm. :) |
![]() |
![]() Sweet! |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 1:27pm
kat330:
Off-balance on (or near) the Equinox? |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 1:36pm
Shaun(ununun):
@doca: They did an LP for Bending Bridges(firehouse12records.com..., maybe Improvised is behind the pressing?). And for the new 'Illusionary Sea" as well (I wanted that one badly but settle for getting the CD)! |
![]() |
![]() Another great song from Laura Marling followed by Nick Drake, sweet. |
![]() |
![]() string arrangements. you love them or hate them. mostly hate them. |
![]() |
![]() ...and depends heavily on the year of the recording. Alela Diane's done it right. |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 1:45pm
kat330:
IMO, a cello line improves most any song. |
![]() |
![]() fully agree, gives it a chamber music feeling which fits folk better than orchestral strings, which are too "grandiose" imho |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 1:49pm
kat330:
Really wish I'd had the opportunity to learn cello as a child. The synth cello sound on my keyboard just doesn't cut it. :/ |
![]() |
![]() Cello is such a beautiful instrument, it's so versatile and balanced. |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 1:54pm
kat330:
On some playlist months back, I mentioned that (for me) the cello most closely emulates the human voice. Someone countered that, no, it's the saxophone. I granted a touché, but then riposted, the cello most closely emulates a human voice that's been liquor and smoke-free. :) Kiiiiittttyyyy! |
![]() |
![]() Hahaha |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 1:57pm
kat330:
I dunno if it was that kitty in the studio or something else, but right outside my window now is an angry squirrel, making a chittering racket. |

YETI BOB:
Wow, Linda Perhacs is wonderful! What a beautiful song! |
Mon. 9/23/13 2:00pm
van:
"The violin is an instrument that is said to be much like the human voice, and in this musician's masterly hands, it sobbed and laughed and sang -- ecstatic, sorrowful, importuning, adoring, flirtatious, castigating, playful, romancing, merry, triumphal, sumptuous. Mon. 9/23/13 2:03pm
Shaun(ununun):
I'm going to go outside with my own cat and read some Arcana II. She (the cat) draws a lot of chattering from a few squirrels in my neighborhood. Really enjoyed the Apenion & Árbore. Take care everyone. ;) |
![]() |
![]() The human voice is an instrument that is said to be much like the human voice... woops. |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 2:03pm
kat330:
The lower register of a well-played flute also sounds much like the human voice to me. |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 2:05pm
kat330:
Enjoy, Shaun! Breathe! |
![]() |
![]() Hummingbird Deluxe...perhaps a tribute to the Gibson guitar that it's played on? |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 2:15pm
kat330:
Hey, folks == ATT just showed up no matter what I said. :/ So if I don't let them look into things, they'll put it off for who knows how long. Sorrrryyy! I'll catch up in the archive if not back before 3pm. BYE! |
![]() |
![]() @Mike East: on a Gibson Hummingbird where the low E is out of tune when played open... :D |
![]() |
![]() Bye Kat! |
![]() |
![]() @ Mike East and @ glowing one, I think you are correct sirs! Don mentioned there was a backstory to the new tune. @Kat, no worries. The archive will be up soon. |

van:
So, a few nights ago, I literally had a dream where I was at a record fair and came across a FMU rack of records, and two Irene Trudel marathon vinyl LP premiums (do those even exist?) might as well have been shining in gold at me. I snatched them up in an instant :) Best $75 per album I ever spent in a dream!
♥
Mon. 9/23/13 2:37pm
12539:
What a great dream! | |
Mon. 9/23/13 2:42pm
prokop:
hello, what's the music under your talk? thanks for great show!
![]() |
![]() What a wonderful track this is, wow |
Mon. 9/23/13 2:50pm
kat330:
Perfect disappoptimist scenario: I was optimistic ATT would honor and abide by my request to wait until after 3 pm, esp. given the hell they've needlessly put us through over the decades, but no, I was disappointed by them yet again. Sigh.
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 2:52pm
kat330:
Oooh, I missed Hitchcock. And catching the end (or middle) of Barbez. |
![]() |
![]() Love this Laura Mvula track. |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 2:52pm
kat330:
Is this still Mvula? |
![]() |
Mon. 9/23/13 2:55pm
kat330:
Must still have been Barbez (the speaking female). Radio says it's Sheets now. |
♥
Mon. 9/23/13 2:58pm
12539:
Thanks, Irene. | |
![]() |
![]() Verizon always disappoints. And not to disappoint, I must bid you all 'adieu" for a couple of weeks |
![]() |
![]() Irene, as always a wonderful show, really loved the Laura Mvula track, we will of course miss you, have a fab time. Have a great week everyone |
