"I've Been Everywhere, Man"?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:27pm davex:

Hi Kurt. I guess it's easier to have been everywhere in the Czech Republic.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:28pm common:

this music is making me want beersies!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:29pm Droll:

davex, And just as importantly, we now know there are a few places Johnny hasn't been, or maybe has been but can't pronounce.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:31pm davex:

Droll, and between the two of them (and all the many others who have covered the song), they probably could have pronounced just about anything.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:32pm glenn:

at the end of hank snow's original version, a chorus of female singers sing "i know someplace you haven't been", which is one of the reasons it's always going to be the best version.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:35pm davex:

Great set of Czech!
  Fri. 9/6/13 3:37pm Helen Mirren:

beer.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:39pm davex:

It's a bit like this:
Ya Tu Zemi Znam
Ya mam yod lo vani rad
Malovani Jebanku
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:40pm Caryn:

Dammit, missed the start! Oh well. Lovely to have you back, Kurt!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:45pm Mike East:

yeah, what Caryn said.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:47pm northguineahills:

Downloading a crapload of software for work, so, I went out to the plaza to watch the US Open on the big screen for about 15 minutes, oh, I also had a beer. (Not quite beersies when it's just one).
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:47pm Caryn:

Incidentally, was very excited to receive a swag package from WFMU today. Opened it to find my Best Show swag from the 2012 Marathon. It was nice to finally get it, but now my desire to receive this year's swag has only increased..
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:48pm Mike East:

better than my half frozen perrier.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:49pm Caryn:

Just glanced up, and there's an Eagles documentary on tv. Interesting juxtaposition with this music.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:58pm Caryn:

Time for a pudding cup. I feel my Friday nights are not up to "beersies" standards.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:58pm common:

almost time for beersies!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 3:59pm common:

pudding sounds good to, though.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:00pm glenn:

tapioca! tapioca!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:01pm Caryn:

They don't do tapioca over here. This one was plain vanilla. Have a chocolate and a caramel one in the fridge.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:02pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Are beer-scented candles a thing that hasn't been invented yet?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:02pm glenn:

the great new italian place around the corner from me has panacotta with brandied plums. you have no idea how fucking good it is.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:06pm Caryn:

@Ken from HP: had to google it. Apparently there's a bucketload of beer-scented candles on the market. Go forth and shop!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:09pm davex:

What will they think of next?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:11pm Caryn:

Hah, one of the manufacturers has candles that smell like whiskey, bacon, "campfire", "stripper", "hippie" and "mouthwash".
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:12pm Caryn:

Also popcorn and "freshly cut grass".
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:13pm glenn:

stripper scented candles? so basically, cheap perfume you can't wash off.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:16pm Caryn:

@glenn: exactly. They describe the scent as "the overpowering perfume strippers wear".
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:17pm Caryn:

I haven't checked, but I suspect the "hippie" one smells of patchouli. Or pot. Or both.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:18pm davex:

Iva Bittová is quite versatile...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:39pm davex:

@Kurt: Let me know if you need help with Czech and the like...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:43pm common:

i was in a phase where i was watching a lot of Czech films. So many good and strange ones.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Occasionally, Kukla, Fran & Ollie would show foreign films on Saturday mornings, way back when.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:54pm hamburger:

@common - could you give a top three to czech out? pardon the pun
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:55pm davex:

There a lot of great Czech children's films - lots of fairy tales with a certain magical realism.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:57pm glenn:

oh, what's the name of the czech mole? those are great cartoons.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:57pm common:

@hamburger: one is daisies. there is one i can't remember the name of but this guy was living in a comic book. valerie's week of wonders...that was Czech, I think. I'll get back to you.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:58pm davex:

@glenn: Yes those are great. The Czech name is Krtek, don't know about an English name...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:59pm hamburger:

thanks common
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 4:59pm common:

Happy beersies to all!!! Hamburger, I will get back to you this weekend! BEEEEEEEEERSIES!!!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:00pm davex:

Probably the best known Czech fairy tale film is the classic Cinderella adaptation: www.imdb.com...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:00pm hamburger:

beersies
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I wonder if Nachum's been lighting beer candles on Fridays all these years.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:05pm hamburger:

<- still need to explore eastern european animation / shame it seems overlooked
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:07pm Caryn:

Heh, read the Cinderella plot summary and read the "three magic nuts" as "3 magic nuns". Either way, that is a plot.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:08pm glenn:

3 magic nuns. that was on redtube a while ago.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:08pm davex:

Caryn: It is a true classic for the young and young at heart, often seen at Christmas. No nuns, though!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:10pm hamburger:

Alessandro Bosetti!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:13pm Caryn:

@davex: inspired me to see if the best known Finnish fairy tale film was online. The whole movie is on youtube! Sadly, no English subtitles :(
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:13pm glenn:

hamburger --www.youtube.com...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:18pm davex:

Caryn: Yes, that's often the problem. They often don't bother with subtitles since they figure that children can't follow them.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:19pm hamburger:

thanks glenn - I have added it to my 'watch later' youtube button / charles mingus - moanin' is the first track on that list. it's fun as a 'bookmark' kind of thing
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:20pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Free live video of US Open tennis. Serena playing now.
www.usopen.org...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:31pm Caryn:

@davex: true that. Of course, the youtube version is ripped from tv, so it wouldn't have subtitles. But if anyone wants to try and follow along to the visuals, the film (1949 version of Sleeping Beauty) is here: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...gif reminds me of www.youtube.com... ...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:37pm davex:

@Caryn: You're right, of course. I was just thinking of how hard it is to get children's DVDs with English subtitles here.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:40pm Caryn:

@davex: very true. Until recently, been quite hard to find any local movies with foreign subtitles on the DVDs. Been a real damper on introducing our cinema to foreign friends.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:42pm glenn:

why is darwinism always so funny? news.nationalpost.com...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:44pm davex:

Yes, and it is a general problem here in Germany that most English-language film and television are dubbed into German so that Germans do not hear as much English as other Europeans who use more subtitles. That may be why Scandinavians, etc. seem to speak much better English.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

glenn: ...erg. Not so funny...really. Nor will I go to an AirShow after what people have told me...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that Klangforum put a rich pallette to good use
...FMU provides the invaluable service of actually playing things I've only read about : from what I've heard Braxton is not as inaccessible as all that !...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(...*among* FMU's services to me...)
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:50pm Mike East:

Braxton's son is coming in here next week.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:53pm northguineahills:

Crap, I step out to talk to my boss, and I miss Anthony Braxton.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:55pm davex:

Another intriguing Czech cover.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:55pm northguineahills:

Thanks Kurt! Enjoy the weekend everyone!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...glad to get a taste afterwerk !
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:59pm Caryn:

Lovely show, Kurt! Hopefully there'll be even more Czech discoveries in the weeks to come.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 5:59pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

Bye, Fuckers!!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 6:00pm davex:

Thanks Kurt! Looking forward to more Czech too...
