Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:46am Doug Schulkind:

I'll be fishing for complements soon enough, Brian.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:49am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:49am Doug Schulkind:

Having sticker shock, Uncle Michael
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:50am Brian in UK:

I always pay you the highest condiment.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:50am Uncle Michael:

Looks like the handle on my dad's pick.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:51am glenn:

my, that young african-american gentleman has a substantial digitus medius.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:51am listener james from westwood:

that belt is straight out of a steve reeves sword-and-sandal epic.
howdy all!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:53am Doug Schulkind:

That young gentleman usually had ten of those digits wrapped around the throat of that young woman.

Good morning, Listener James from Westwood. I hereby dub you Conan the Librarian!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:53am glenn:

i'm going to start a tshirt company called ikeons.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:54am glenn:

because a tshirt is a wife beater, and so was ike.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:57am Brian in UK:

@james aaaaah steve reeves. Who was the guy who served in WW2 then went on to make Westerns? Name is eluding me.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:57am βrian:

Flocculated skies over the isthmus today. Happy week's end, all.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:58am Doug Schulkind:

We all get flocced in the end.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:58am glenn:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 8:59am Doug Schulkind:

I'd like to start a publishing house called Strong Silent Type.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:00am Brian in UK:

No glenn he was b-film generally.

@βrian loving both those words in one sentence.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:00am glenn:

oooh. that's pretty good, actually.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:00am listener james from westwood:

heh, either a publishing house or a letterpress outfit!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:01am Brian in UK:

glenn you got it. Thanks.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:01am davex:

Hi Doug and everyone! So many comments before the show even started...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:02am Doug Schulkind:

Hiya davex! We weren't talking behind your back. Honest.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:02am glenn:

we are nothing if not verbose.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:02am holland oats:

drumma! peoples! i am with you!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

Awright! It's Hall and Oates! Oops, I mean holland oats!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:03am Brian in UK:

Audio Murphy anyone.

@davex dull in Watford, How's Leipzig?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

You know, holland oats, I JUST GOT IT.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:04am glenn:
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:05am ausmanx:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:05am hyde:

good ol' Izear.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:06am davex:

Brian: Nice summer weather is back for an encore here - for another day or two, at least...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:06am holland oats:

@drumma heh
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:08am glenn:

ausmanx - Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

H. L. Mencken
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:08am Brian in UK:

@davex we have been blessed with a great summer.

@glenn great link.

@ausmanx does not look good, mate.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

I've got wheelbarrows full of sympathy for you. We idiot Americans have inflicted the same self-abuse time after time.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:10am glenn:

type books is an absolutely fantastic bookstore.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Hye hyde!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:10am ausmanx:

as if losing the cricket wasn't bad enough
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:10am βrian:

It's been a pretty delicious summer on the isthmus, too. Only a few dog-breath days, with the rest being temperate and breezy.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:11am glenn:

so........ from ashes to asses, then?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:11am βrian:

@ausmanx: Jiminy?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:12am Doug Schulkind:

I imagine the same could be said about cricket that has been said about baseball: It's not life or death, it's way more important than that.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:13am davex:

Quite a juxtaposition of song and picture.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:14am Brian in UK:

@ausmanx we reconvene in November in your backyard.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:14am ausmanx:

we'd probably lose jiminy too, if we ever had him. and from tomorrow, if i play GTDS too loud while this beautiful muslim stuff is on, i'll be arrested
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:15am Brian in UK:

@ausmanx you know which country is Islam!!!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:20am davex:

@ßrian: What isthmus is that?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:22am βrian:

Why, this a one:
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:22am davex:

That is a nice looking isthmus!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:24am Alex In Illinois:

I tried to watch a professional cricket match once, but I couldnot figure out which team was the home team and which was the visiting one, because neither team was wearing white unitforms.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:26am βrian:

What cricket looks like:
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

I think I just sprained my brain trying to come up with another isthmus pun. I need an aspirin.

Morning Alex In Illinois!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:28am Uncle Michael:

All Doug wants for Isthsmus is his two front lobes.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:29am Doug Schulkind:

You'd think that after 20 minutes of chanting they could at least fade out with some dignity.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:29am ausmanx:

this is a damn serious show opener! i see this stuff is related to the gnawa moroccan stuff that pharaoh sanders had a go with. this looks like a wonderful blog...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:29am hyde:

whoa, this guitar line makes me feel a little woozy
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:30am Shaun:

Not fade away... afternoon, drummersomers.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:31am glenn:

the stanford looks like a nice theatre there on the isthmus.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:33am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for providing that link. Not sure if the download still works...

Greetings! Shaun!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:34am dc pat:

sounds like I'm just in time...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:34am βrian:

No Stanford theatre in these parts. I think that flickr series is a sort of travelogue.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:35am βrian:

Remember, kids: Autotune is never acceptable.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:37am dc pat:

nonsense. when it sound like this it is Good.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:37am Doug Schulkind:

@dc pat
Hey! Were you ever the lead drummer for the Sex Pistols? (!)
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:37am still b/p:

The track by 6 year old Quinnisa Rose could be slipped right in here.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:39am listener james from westwood:

autotune's a seasoning. used sparingly, it's fine. u.s. producers lack this discretion.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:39am dc pat:

Oh man, the rumors are hard to squash Mr. Drummersome...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:40am hyde:

I am so in love with this Alice Coltrane piece. When this CD got reissued I played it about nine million times. It's too good for talkover music! (but I forgive you)
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:40am βrian:

It's just a little waterboarding. Never hurt, anybody...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:42am dc pat:

WAIT a've been looking at other playlists, haven't you?? I must admit, I spent all morning on Keili's show last week... She made an appearance in a dream so I figured that was the right move...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:43am glenn:

she's 19, you perv.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

I feel a large measure of guilt relegating great music to talkover status.

@dc pat
I simply don't know WHAT you are talking about.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:44am listener james from westwood:

i saw tom scharpling in one of my dreams a few weeks ago, but i forget the context. he was placid.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of slipping right in, good morning still b/p!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:45am glenn:

and i say that with love, dcpat.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:45am dc pat:

I applied for Keili's boyfriend but haven't heard anything. Too soon to call?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

It was The Best Dream®.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:47am hyde:

@Doug but I suppose it is preferable to playing bad bed music to chatter over just so you won't feel remorse.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:48am glenn:

country and eastern?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Where the cowboys ride water buffalo.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:50am dc pat:

hey glenn, how do you know I'm not 19? Huh?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:51am still b/p:

Good morning.
Shake it, shake it, Slippery,
Just don't tell them that you know me...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:54am Hugo:

Sounds of Isan. Luvly. That indonesian piece is an oddity. Sounds like early 70s warped European prog in a funny language - with a ravel bolero beat. Intriguing ...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:56am ausmanx:

anyone seen that new film about indonesia, The Act of Killing? holy f, scary stuff...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

One of the sequences I've loosely prepared for today's show I've labeled WEIRDOS. (For my own internal organizing purposes.) This is NOT that sequence.

You can always count on the Indonesian sounds (and the Ogun releases) to pull good Hugo out of the shadows!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:01am Doug Schulkind:

More on that amazing Kelompok Kampungan:
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:02am glenn:

just a feeling, dcpat. just a feeling.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:04am Shaun:

WEIRDOS. I've a youtube playlist called SADDO but that refers to me (it's stuff like someone playing Greg Phillinganes's synth bass part to MJ's Baby be Mine). Don't judge me.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:06am Jesse K:

is this the place?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:06am βrian:

Hey, you spilled ketjap in my music.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:07am Gary:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:08am Jesse K:

I believe Guitar boogie is also to be found on Culture Shock
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:08am Jesse K:

or did you say that already
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:09am davex:

Hey Jesse! I do believe it is...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:09am listener james from westwood:

"those floating in space"—the next frontier for fmu should be to get a pledge from someone on the int'l space station.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:11am Gary:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

Raise the woof, Gary! Hello there Kendall! I bow low to you, Monica!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:15am Brian in UK:

Monica got to say I loves your premium, cannot usually catch you live. Raised the bar again.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

@holland oats
Luna is all over Shelley's butt smell. (Unless Shelley is your girlfriend or something. Then she is not.)
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:22am Parq:

Wait, was the auction-caller part of that Dan Weiss track live vocals or sampled?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:23am Monica:

Thx, Brian in UK! Have you heard Doug's yet? Killer diller!!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:25am Hugo:

I thought it might be Lol and it was! Lo(v)lly!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:25am Brian in UK:

Monica, that Doug is too weird for me.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

Weiss was simply playing along to a recording of Thompson's auctioneering. There is a video showing Weiss in real time playing to a cellphone recording of Thompson.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:27am βrian:

Are you saying that doug don't hunt?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:27am Parq:

Too much, but it would have been better with a live auctioneer. I can dream, can't I?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:28am βrian:

I see Ike is making his bid...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

It will happen. The Weiss video has gotten some major traction. Some smartass will bring the two together for a live duet.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:30am still b/p:

Or, he's flippin' us the bid.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

Sexteto Electrónico Moderno are from... Uruguay. That is all.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:30am Gary:

Ooh, awesome funky track, this.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:32am ausmanx:

you really do put together the most perfectly chosen sets, professor schulkind. BUT, heading to 1 a.m. here so time to leave work. i will be here next week, assuming i am not hauled off by the security forces of the NEW ORDER. good evening, all...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

Sleep well, sweet ausmanx!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

The Upper Volta (Burkino Faso) band closing out this set is called Orchestre Les Vadous de Flamboyant. Or, in other words: THE FLAMBOYANT VOODOO ORCHESTRA.

I love having ears!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 10:48am still b/p:

'Dja see the Burkina Faso bricks?

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:10am northguineahills:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:10am holland oats:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:16am hyde:

I can't even speak French, but I feel smarter already
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

The audio of this Jacques Lacan presentation was taken from a documentary film, Jacques Lacan Parle from 1972. In this passage, Lacan is acosted during a lecture by a disaffected bohemian contrarian who interrupts the lecture and acts with a kind of sweet-natured confrontation. Lacan takes it all in stride and engages the young fellow. See it here:

"On September 5, 2013, Prine appeared on The Colbert Report. During the show Prine sang "How Lucky". Following the show he sang "Paradise" with Colbert singing one verse and joining Prine on the closing chorus on the web exclusive."

Lonnie Holley is playing London in December. My money is on Lonnie to win in straight sets.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:26am βrian:

@pss Is he looking bedraggled? He's the master of the goofy rhyme.

seems this Lonnie tune is in D#
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:27am Shaun:

Wow, cheers, Brian. Where's he playing?

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:29am Brian in UK:

Funny thing is Shaun tickets are available on this link but no sign on Cafe Oto site yet.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:29am Uncle Michael:

I'm askeered.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:31am Shaun:

Thanks again, Brian.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:31am Holly in NC:

Hopscotch = best 'rockist' us music fest hands down, soo sad I can't attend. I'm sure friend Artie will report back.

Deerhunter & Black Lips are involved w this Lonnie track & I STILL like it !
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:32am pacific standard simon:

@βrian - Bloated, and not entirely familiar with his own material, to put it unkindly. But maybe it's just me.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:32am Stanley:

Blimey, is that the time?
Gotta split. Thanks for the sounds, Doug.
See you tomorrow Brian, at Bill's, all being well.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:33am Brian in UK:

Yes, Stanley. I have made my excuses to the boss.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:33am holland oats:

would not have guessed webster hall for nyc, hmmm
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:33am holland oats:

he performed at the whitney last time no?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:34am Stanley:

@Brian - what for last Saturday, or are you going to miss tomorrow, too?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:34am Brian in UK:

Doug, is this really two years old?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:35am Artie:

Artie is dipped, dunked and drenched in it. Full day yesterday and we'll be back in a rock club in 27 minutes. Lonnie's performing twice tomorrow, once in our city's Rose Garden outdoor theater, then in a converted church. I plan to be at both. Holly, the outdoor show is free.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:35am Brian in UK:

Last Saturday, Went to watch the T20 cricket in Chester le Street. Going to Shropshire tomorrow but will catch some of Bill's malarkey.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:36am Stanley:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:36am Brian in UK:

Stanley, drink safely.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

Record in 2011. Just now released.

Yup, the Whitney.

@pacific standard
Holley is not a traditional "musician." But, IMHO, a brilliant one.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:37am dc pat:

well that was just great. Glad Deerhunter and Black Lips were involved in it, makes me like it even more!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:38am pacific standard simon:

@Doug - was that comment intended for someone else, or did you misunderstand something I wrote?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:39am Gary:

I think Holly is right about Murray Saul:
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:40am Carmichael:

Brian, are you going to Fairport's get together at Shropshire?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:40am northguineahills:

That the best Lonnie track I've heard. I've been more ambivalent about the other ones, this one killed.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:41am Brian in UK:

Doug I think pss was referring to John Prine.

Carmichael, not aware of that. A friend of mine went to Cropredy in Oxfordshire and had a great time, Alice Cooper and all. Is that what you meant?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:42am Uncle Michael:

Doug, thank you for not closing the show with Lonnie.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:42am Holly in NC:

@Artie - So happy for you! I can't leave or bring current charges :-(
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:42am Uncle Michael:

Life is like a problem.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

@pacific standar simon
My mistake! I didn't see your @βrian. Thought you were talking about Lonnie Holley. Which would be cool, if you were. But you weren't. Oopsie!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

You're still fucked, Uncle Michael.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:44am Carmichael:

I thought Cropredy was in Shropshire. Silly bunt ...

Saw Richard Thompson last week, made me think erroneously of Shropshire. What famous event happens annually there?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:44am pacific standard simon:

Hey, UM, you could open your show with 20 minutes of Blossom Dearie!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:44am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:44am Uncle Michael:

I'll cue up a palette cleanser.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:45am Jeff Golick:

Heal me, Brother Drummer!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:45am Holly in NC:

@Gary - great link, thank you ! Need his cd :-)
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:45am Uncle Michael:

I should spotlight Blossom some week soon.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:46am Jeff Golick:

(Been listening via phone app; kid commandeered the PC this morning.)
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

@Hiya el jefe!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:46am Uncle Michael:

I'm pretty sure you could take that kid.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:47am pacific standard simon:

My argument for boarding school right there!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:47am Brian in UK:

What famous event happens annually there?
Carmichael we go there most Septembers to celebrate our wedding anniversary. No perticler reason it is the kind of place where very little happens and the clear skies are stunning but only at night!!!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:48am Uncle Michael:

Everyone is invited to follow me into the next gallery on our art walk.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

Ooh thanks for remembering that, UM!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:49am Uncle Michael:

I love this Lee Moses.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:49am pacific standard simon:

I have to miss the second half of your musical mystery tour -- appointment with eye doctor to get a thing looked at.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:50am Uncle Michael:

I will have a thing you can look at.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:51am Holly in NC:

Oh, crap. Losing connection, & really should take dogs outside. Back later for UM, hopefully.

I love this Lee Moses, too, even though I'm still getting 2 second bursts of Arthur & Booker :-)
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:51am Uncle Michael:

I have a thing to look at you, in fact.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:51am pacific standard simon:

I'm sure you have -- I've heard about you stream DJs.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:52am Doug Schulkind:

Good luck with the iDoc!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:52am Uncle Michael:

What he said.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:53am Señor Andy:

Just moved to PA from CA. I'm dreamin'
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:54am still b/p:

Hey, my pop-up went into its on-off thing without any DJ hand-off a few minutes ago. Who twiddled?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

There was a little blip with the stream. I saw a rebuffering thingy pop up. Sorry for the shitty connectivity there, folks.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:55am Brian in UK:

Condiments to the chef.

Typo alert. Tee hee.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:56am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome to PA, Señor A!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:56am Carmichael:

Brian, it was the Mummer's Day dance. I kid you not. Thanks for the show, Doug.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:56am pacific standard simon:

Doug, you didn't leave enough time for the 20 minute version of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix"!
  Fri. 9/6/13 11:57am trish:

Relished the tunes like a quiet mustard.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:57am hyde:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:59am Shaun:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:00pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:00pm Alex In Illinois:

You didn't blame any of the technicals on the new dog. I guess you are saving that.

Have you ever seen Snooks Eaglin's hands? He could out-flip-off Ike.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:00pm Doug Schulkind:

It was a gas gas gas, everyone. Thanks for hanging with me! Stay tuned now for the good Uncle Michael!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:02pm Señor Andy:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:06pm Gary:
