Options August 28, 2013: 5th nearly-annual Disco/Dance Party!

Listen to this show: | Add or read comments

Summertime always reminds me of listening to Ken "Spider" Webb and Ricky Ricardo and, of course the Chief Rocker Frankie Crocker on WBLS. In that spirit, I present the 5th mostly-annual Evan "Funk" Davies Disco/Dance Party! I'll be spinning some classic jams of the mid-'70s and early '80s, along with some lesser-known nuggets. It's the kind of show that makes you say "I haven't heard this in 35 years" and "why haven't I heard this before?!" so if you love the nightlife you'll tune in!

Disco disclaimer! I'm keeping the lines blurry and using "disco" as a catch-all term for my own take on fun dance music from the mid-70s to the early '80s, expanding the boundaries (and sound) of the traditional disco era. No griping, please!

Just be good to me! Like The Evan "Funk" Davies Show on Facebook, and follow me on Twitter!

This may sound geeky, but I've had this show marked as an "appointment" in my Outlook calendar since Evan announced it - Yes, that's how much I've been looking forward to it!
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 9:33pm Mike East:

Yes, that's very geeky, Mr. Sin, but you are in the right company for that, I think.

Where are the ladies on the comments board tonight?!

  Wed. 8/28/13 10:01pm Mylie Cyrus:

Butt of course.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:02pm Uncle Michael:

I was pretty anti-disco as a youth. Pro-funk, though.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:02pm fleep:

Tongues a lot, Mylie.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:03pm efd:

I bought one of those custom-made shirts with the hot transfer letters that said "Disco Sucks" when I was in high school. Things change.

Michael, I'm hopeful you're still pro-Funk.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:03pm Uncle Michael:

I'd kill for some Hamilton Bohannon.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:05pm Kat in Chicago:

Weems, that is an impressive list! I didn't get to see any of them live back in the day.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:08pm Uncle Michael:

I'll throw down the funk till I can no longer get off my ass and jam.
  Wed. 8/28/13 10:09pm neelc13:

Disco's certainly not my favorite genre of music, but I enjoy it well enough.

I'm also very much pro-funk.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:12pm Uncle Michael:

blow your whistle
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:12pm steve:

Weems - i sadly did not, wasn't even born... but im happy to say I've been to David Mancuso's Loft parties recently... great time and pretty time capsule-like.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:13pm Mike East:

I wanna play the whistle in this band.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:13pm steve:

god, i love the disco whistle
  Wed. 8/28/13 10:14pm neelc13:

I've never heard this song before. Great tune.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:14pm Droll:

I never abandoned my love of disco! CHIC is one of my all-time fave bands, which annoyed my (hair-)metal friends to no end. Now disco metal is an entire schtick for cover bands like Tragedy.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:14pm efd:

different type of disco whistle coming up next!
  Wed. 8/28/13 10:15pm Weems:

Thanks Kat. Thankfully had an older sister who would give in to my incessant begging.

Anyone frequent the legendary Downstairs Records in NYC back in the day? Warren Tesoro from there was in the Gary Toms Empire.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:16pm fleep:

It sure was a great time for horn sections and string sections, after years of guitars and drums.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:17pm Mike East:

haha. awesome. I wish it was the same guy. He's like the go to guy if you want whistle on your track.
  Wed. 8/28/13 10:17pm Mylie Cyrus:

I loves me some BT Express.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:19pm steve:

wow, only ever knew Dance Reaction's (i think later) Disco Train
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:19pm Mike East:

absolutely, fleep. Its expensive to hire a disco band. lots of backup singers and keyboards, too.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:20pm steve:

plus the whistle player!
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:21pm Mike East:

...one of the reasons we were hoping to get Kool & the Gang in here...it would have been a good backline rental, I bet.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:22pm Holly in NC:

Very odd listening to this show while reading 'Detroit Rock City' ... total audio/visual disconnect!
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:24pm Droll:

I miss bands with 15 professional musicians. I'd settle for 5. All they're offering is a guy with a laptop.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:26pm Kat in Chicago:

For a city (in)famous as the home of Disco Demolition, you can hear quite a lot of the stuff around here these days, if you've a mind to. I have several DJ friends in Chicago who are quite sincerely, non-ironically into disco. One of them just announced today on Facebook that she's starting a new night called "The Full Twelve Inches" - 12" dance singles played in their entirety! - and she posted a YouTube link to the Gary Tom's Empire version of "Drive My Car" on the event page. I see a Tom Moulton Mix on there too.
  Wed. 8/28/13 10:28pm The King:

WhoooooOOOOOOO BABY! It's I, Elvis Aaron Presley. I just popped by from my subterranean sand kingdom to bust a move and get down with my funky bad self! HOo-AH! Man, this party is about as happenin' as a PBB Sandwich! Mwoo-HAH! Karate! YEAH!
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:28pm steve:

Kat - i should probably just look this up but is Frankie Knuckles still in town? he was on a recent list of 50 still-active djs over 50
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:29pm Kat in Chicago:

Steve: absolutely. I believe he's playing here at Smart Bar on Sunday night.

Make my funk the E Funk, I wants to get funked up! I want the bomb, I want the E Funk. I want my funk uncut! But I digress, how many of your 12 inch singles are labeled with their BPM?
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:00pm Holly in NC:

@Steve - that's most excellent!
I miss my Nike roller skates. Our roller rink played more Van Halen than disco, however.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:00pm Droll:

Unless BPM are the original owner's initials, I'd guess 0.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:01pm Uncle Michael:

Ain't no party like an E Funk party, cuz an E Funk party don't stop.

That was the social media disco whistle.

Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:08pm efd:

Well, he was a little more than close... he was off by one turntable.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:08pm Uncle Michael:

  Wed. 8/28/13 11:10pm Weems:

Feeling like a drugged Adam West or William Shatner, don't want to go to sleep, But. Getting. So tired. Need Amyl Nitrate.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:11pm Stevel:

Hey Pine! How's life?
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:11pm Uncle Michael:

Screw it. I'm playing anyway...the long version...in two weeks. Because I love it. And because EFD inspires.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:12pm efd:

Weems, hang on! 45 minutes to go!
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:13pm Stevel:

"Its that new DJ down at that "Dance" station--if you can call it that. He's the one stirring the kids up. Maybe we oughta teach him a lesson."

Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:14pm Kat in Chicago:

Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:15pm Uncle Michael:

Even, are you holding back on the dance mixes of rock releases like The Kinks' Superman?
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:16pm Uncle Michael:

Evan, even...
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:16pm efd:

They are out of scope, Uncle Michel.

  Wed. 8/28/13 11:20pm Callie:

SUCH a fun show tonight, Evan! :)
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:21pm BadGuyZero:

This Roberta Kelly track would pair well with Harvey Sid Fisher's "Astrology Songs" album.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:22pm Kat in Chicago:

I was thinking something similar, BGZ.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:24pm efd:

Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:31pm Stevel:

EVERYONE wants to sing the bass tag. Pretty sure you're all mouthing along now, as I am, much to the confusion of my wife, not listening on my headphones.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:32pm efd:

This is one 12" I am not fading out early.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:33pm eastvanhalen:

Hi Eddy! No reason to be sorry, I'm totally enjoying both show and book, disconnect be damned.

But I do have a rather painful stye forming. Anyone know any good remedies other than a hot compress ?

Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:46pm Kat in Chicago:

Surprisingly not an enormous disconnect with my book for the evening, an account of the Situationists International's legacy post-1968. Just read an extended digression in the spectacle of NYC club/nightlife.

Wonderful show as always!
