...had a 1/2 & 1/2 last night of Guinness & that Foster 'DirtyBastard' Scotch Ale (8 &1/2 %!) I mentioned last time. One has to come up w/ names for yer 1/2 & 1/2s - usually w/ Guinness & so most often 'Black' & something or something & 'Black' - but calling this one so far 'Thistle & Shamrock' (Scottish / Irish) - like the radio Program...

man, sounds good RevRabbit. That's a great way to cut the alc content of some of the stuff I've been sampling to something reasonable. Going to use that trick.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 9:37am Mike East:

I dont understand how yuengling can call what they put in a bottle a black and tan...the whole point of the 1/2&1/2 to me is that they are separated. also, the history of the the term can be offensive to a certain group of people, I believe. almost as offensive as an Irish Car Bomb
  Wed. 8/28/13 9:40am Emile:

Still working on that content/character thing.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 9:44am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- it's like the Irish version of 'Oreo', in a way...
- yes the Guinness is fairly low alch% - the Scotch Ale quite high for beer
- & taste combo. a concern; the Guinness can help make sweet stuff more palatable.
- Now - from what I read - the more fermented something is, the sweeter it gets - which is the point of bitter hops in the 1st place? But yerknow suggest anything inna pub & hear contrary opinion - others say stronger beers are sweeter to counteract the bitterness of sugars converted in fermentation...
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 9:44am cd tap:

ugh, I'll say Mike. Purposely avoided the "car bomb" drink for that reason. Wasn't aware that black/tan had any meaning outside of the color of Guinness.
  Wed. 8/28/13 9:47am trish:

Happy 50th anniversary to a speech and that very large public demonstration for civil rights.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 9:47am cd tap:

I don't think that's quite correct (being a former brewer). Fermentation is yeast eating sugars and turning them into alc basically so the more sugar you have, the more alcohol. Sugars come from malted barley for the most part and sweetness in a brew is a result of where in the process you arrest the fermentation.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 9:48am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Black & Tan can refer to uniform colors (Irish - English) is my understanding.

...like every great Southern Preacher - King's delivery is very Musical. Heard a special on Coltrane, & suggested his 'Alabama' corresponded directly to King's speech about the infamous Alabama church bombing that killed little girls.

You'll get an eye roll or gently corrected. In the Irish bars that is. And that does include the XXXRock.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 10:47am Caryn:

Yeah, the Black and Tans were notorious for their a-hole rampages, mainly because they were put together somewhat haphazardly and thus didn't have much control in the early years. The name came for the similarly haphazard uniforms. I assume both the drink and the paramilitary force both got their names simply from the colouration (often connected with foxhounds), considering the drink was first called a black & tan decades before the paramilitary force was formed.
BTW, they're showing "Hunger" on tv here today.

@glenn: I might take the claim more seriously if it wasn't one guy claiming he overheard something decades ago, but never bothered to mention it before. Or if a retired guy losing to an athlete at the top of her game and 26 years younger than him could somehow be considered a shocker.

"The Wind That Shakes the Barley" is very good. And man, Cillian Murphy has done his share of IRA-adjacent films. I guess that goes with the territory of being an Irish actor...

Speaking of inappropriate names, there's a chain of second-hand stores here called UFF. Irish friends of mine often want to take one of their bags home when they visit (but also warn us never to carry stuff around in those bags if we ever visit Ireland or Northern Ireland) due to the disjoint. The UFF is also short for the Ulster Freedom Fighters, who are essentially a terrorist group.

Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:18am Caryn:

@RRN63: well, as the link points out, it's unlikely there is a safe name for the "Irish car bomb", since it's a virtually unknown drink in Ireland. Partly because of the name, partly probably because the Irish would just consider it a waste of good whiskey and stout to mix them with Bailey's.

Reading the above convo, I can tell you the original Black & Tan was Guinness and Harp Ale. And yes, they were Prot-based government-authorized gangs much like London's old Hellfire Club. They were armed and provided with intel by the Ulster government.

And no self-respecting Irish Republican would ever drink one, or a "car bomb", or any other such bollocksy drink. Although I'm from Wexford in the south, my family are "Shinnies", as in followers of Sinn Fein politics and, ahem, "activities".

Now someone please help me down from my soapbox.

Oh I love this quote from Best in Show.

"we both love soup" hahaha

Simpsons episode: "The Springfield Files". Man, all the gifs are from excellent episodes!
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:35am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'm down Carm.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:36am Caryn:

@Carm: would you drink a B&T if it was called a "Half and half"?
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:36am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...except I like messing w/ 1/2 & 1/2s...
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...to drink...
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:37am Carmichael:

Caryn, if it looks like a dog and smells like a dog, it doesn't matter what you name it. It's still a dog.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:38am robyn:

all this terrible country music reminds me of my mom making dinner when i was a kid.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:39am Caryn:

Carm, I can't make out whether you just think the drink concept is crap, or whether it's common name will still be associated with the drink in your mind...
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:39am still b/p:

Here's today's mos' awesome mystical birthday connection of all: Ben Gazzara sings "Life Could be A Dream" aloud along with the Crewcuts as it plays in his car in Road House!
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:40am Caryn:

Ah, the rare slowed down track that doesn't sound just like a distorted, warped version of the original, but actually like a cover. Of course, the 1/4th pitch lowering helps.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:41am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Oh wow, I thought this voice sounded like it was at the wrong speed, then I saw the playlist! It ALmost worked. Very clever Mr. W.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:41am glenn:

dolly has a couple clunkers, but there's no way she can be considered terrible country music.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:41am Carmichael:

Who's the dude singing this? HA HA
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:42am glenn:

okay, a few clunkers.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:42am Caryn:

Rrg and I discussed just this version of Jolene during last week's Irwin show.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:42am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Ooo, nice segue with Mazzy Star.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:43am Jeff:

Wait, that's not some earnest young man singing "Jolene"? Remarkable.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:44am robyn:

oh i like dolly. i'm talking about "i feel like a woman."
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:44am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well - i think we can probably agree the (ahem) 'PornStar' is not a drink - it's a stunt.
- I enjoy 1/2 & 1/2s - usually - & don't call them B&Ts...prob. shouldn't call any of them Black & anything...oops...
- Yeah - nice segue & nice Mazzy.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:44am Caryn:

BTW, did anyone happen to catch the secret Prince show last Sunday? Kurt's probably kicking himself that he's in Europe.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:45am glenn:

ah. well, shania twain is not country music. it's 3rd rate pop with fiddles.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:47am Carmichael:

Hey, good name for a music category: Fiddle Pop!
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:47am Caryn:

@glenn: what Rich Hall was talking about when he said modern country music tends to be just the worst, LCD pop music.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:48am βrian:

Fanta makes third-rate pop.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:49am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- the flipside to Country being recognized for how MarketShare it actually has (lots). Too Much Success, Grasshopper...
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:50am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- how *much* MarketShare...
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:50am still b/p:

Homer's famous for being a third-rate pop.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:51am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...but has the good sense to stick to beer...
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:52am Caryn:

Gotta thank Bob for the gif quality. Ken probably would've thrown a couple of Mileys in there, and I don't need to see that today.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:53am Brian in UK:

Our library still has a lifetimes supply of 'Country & Western' labels. So whatever type of Country you get out it's all C&W.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:54am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

I concur Caryn. Enjoying the Simpsons gifs. If there is one of Homer prancing around in the land of chocolate, that would be great.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:54am Brian in UK:

Got to say I am still happy to have a library.

Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:56am steve:

great show Bob
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:56am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...always the joke: I like both kinds music - Country *&* Western!
...& always think - Country meant Bluegrass in hills
- & Western meant Cowboy - so it's true...
- Lovepump!
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:56am Brian in UK:

Nice one, Bob.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:58am Caryn:

@RRN63: as they said in "Blues Brothers"
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:58am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- if you've never seen 'Decline of Western Civilization Pt. 2 - the Metal Years' - it is *exactly* like Spinal Tap - w/ minor dif. that it's an actual documentary...
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 11:59am Bob W.:

thanks for listening and commenting, everybody! i had a blast today! see you next time!
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 12:00pm Caryn:

@RRN63: It is superb. And better than Pt. 1 or Pt. 3. It's like "The Empire Strikes Back" that way.
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 12:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well - I like Pt. I because I like Punk - but II is harrowing...
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 12:02pm Caryn:

@RRN63: I love punk too, but the "Spinal Tap"-ness of Pt. 2 nudges it ahead in overall documentary quality.

To BOB W. Re: "my cat's breath smells like cat food": Still beats the smell of ANY wet dog. Maybe you oughta dial down the amount of face time you have with your cat? :-)
Avatar Wed. 8/28/13 1:56pm Bob W.:

"my cat's breath smells like cat food" is a ralph wiggum quote.
  Thu. 8/29/13 9:09am dc waters:

Shoulda known that as a Simpsons' fan, but was just being wry in any event. I've spent hours of face time w/ well-fed cats.
