I dont understand how yuengling can call what they put in a bottle a black and tan...the whole point of the 1/2&1/2 to me is that they are separated. also, the history of the the term can be offensive to a certain group of people, I believe. almost as offensive as an Irish Car Bomb

- it's like the Irish version of 'Oreo', in a way...
- yes the Guinness is fairly low alch% - the Scotch Ale quite high for beer
- & taste combo. a concern; the Guinness can help make sweet stuff more palatable.
- Now - from what I read - the more fermented something is, the sweeter it gets - which is the point of bitter hops in the 1st place? But yerknow suggest anything inna pub & hear contrary opinion - others say stronger beers are sweeter to counteract the bitterness of sugars converted in fermentation...
Avatar 9:44am

ugh, I'll say Mike. Purposely avoided the "car bomb" drink for that reason. Wasn't aware that black/tan had any meaning outside of the color of Guinness.

Happy 50th anniversary to a speech and that very large public demonstration for civil rights.
Avatar 9:47am
cd tap:

I don't think that's quite correct (being a former brewer). Fermentation is yeast eating sugars and turning them into alc basically so the more sugar you have, the more alcohol. Sugars come from malted barley for the most part and sweetness in a brew is a result of where in the process you arrest the fermentation.
Avatar 9:48am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Black & Tan can refer to uniform colors (Irish - English) is my understanding.

...like every great Southern Preacher - King's delivery is very Musical. Heard a special on Coltrane, & suggested his 'Alabama' corresponded directly to King's speech about the infamous Alabama church bombing that killed little girls.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am

Yeah, the Black and Tans were notorious for their a-hole rampages, mainly because they were put together somewhat haphazardly and thus didn't have much control in the early years. The name came for the similarly haphazard uniforms. I assume both the drink and the paramilitary force both got their names simply from the colouration (often connected with foxhounds), considering the drink was first called a black & tan decades before the paramilitary force was formed.
BTW, they're showing "Hunger" on tv here today.

"The Wind That Shakes the Barley" is very good. And man, Cillian Murphy has done his share of IRA-adjacent films. I guess that goes with the territory of being an Irish actor...

Speaking of inappropriate names, there's a chain of second-hand stores here called UFF. Irish friends of mine often want to take one of their bags home when they visit (but also warn us never to carry stuff around in those bags if we ever visit Ireland or Northern Ireland) due to the disjoint. The UFF is also short for the Ulster Freedom Fighters, who are essentially a terrorist group.

@RRN63: well, as the link points out, it's unlikely there is a safe name for the "Irish car bomb", since it's a virtually unknown drink in Ireland. Partly because of the name, partly probably because the Irish would just consider it a waste of good whiskey and stout to mix them with Bailey's.

Reading the above convo, I can tell you the original Black & Tan was Guinness and Harp Ale. And yes, they were Prot-based government-authorized gangs much like London's old Hellfire Club. They were armed and provided with intel by the Ulster government.

And no self-respecting Irish Republican would ever drink one, or a "car bomb", or any other such bollocksy drink. Although I'm from Wexford in the south, my family are "Shinnies", as in followers of Sinn Fein politics and, ahem, "activities".

Here's today's mos' awesome mystical birthday connection of all: Ben Gazzara sings "Life Could be A Dream" aloud along with the Crewcuts as it plays in his car in Road House!

Ah, the rare slowed down track that doesn't sound just like a distorted, warped version of the original, but actually like a cover. Of course, the 1/4th pitch lowering helps.

Oh wow, I thought this voice sounded like it was at the wrong speed, then I saw the playlist! It ALmost worked. Very clever Mr. W.

dolly has a couple clunkers, but there's no way she can be considered terrible country music.

Who's the dude singing this? HA HA

okay, a few clunkers.

Rrg and I discussed just this version of Jolene during last week's Irwin show.

Wait, that's not some earnest young man singing "Jolene"? Remarkable.

- well - i think we can probably agree the (ahem) 'PornStar' is not a drink - it's a stunt.
- I enjoy 1/2 & 1/2s - usually - & don't call them B&Ts...prob. shouldn't call any of them Black & anything...oops...
- Yeah - nice segue & nice Mazzy.

BTW, did anyone happen to catch the secret Prince show last Sunday? Kurt's probably kicking himself that he's in Europe.

ah. well, shania twain is not country music. it's 3rd rate pop with fiddles.

Hey, good name for a music category: Fiddle Pop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am

@glenn: what Rich Hall was talking about when he said modern country music tends to be just the worst, LCD pop music.

Fanta makes third-rate pop.

Gotta thank Bob for the gif quality. Ken probably would've thrown a couple of Mileys in there, and I don't need to see that today.

Our library still has a lifetimes supply of 'Country & Western' labels. So whatever type of Country you get out it's all C&W.

I concur Caryn. Enjoying the Simpsons gifs. If there is one of Homer prancing around in the land of chocolate, that would be great.

- if you've never seen 'Decline of Western Civilization Pt. 2 - the Metal Years' - it is *exactly* like Spinal Tap - w/ minor dif. that it's an actual documentary...

thanks for listening and commenting, everybody! i had a blast today! see you next time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm

@RRN63: It is superb. And better than Pt. 1 or Pt. 3. It's like "The Empire Strikes Back" that way.

- well - I like Pt. I because I like Punk - but II is harrowing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm

@RRN63: I love punk too, but the "Spinal Tap"-ness of Pt. 2 nudges it ahead in overall documentary quality.

To BOB W. Re: "my cat's breath smells like cat food": Still beats the smell of ANY wet dog. Maybe you oughta dial down the amount of face time you have with your cat? :-)

"my cat's breath smells like cat food" is a ralph wiggum quote.

Shoulda known that as a Simpsons' fan, but was just being wry in any event. I've spent hours of face time w/ well-fed cats.
