I feel like I never heard "Forever Changes" correctly until one of the CD issues in the '90s or so. A lot of depth and quite dynamic. So many US vinyl versions of that LP up until that time sounded dull and flat -- I guess it was tough to master because of the range and length.

The first time I heard "My Ding-A-Ling" was at a Chuck Berry concert in about 1970. A real crowd-pleaser, that one.

I had forgotten that I've seen Chuck Berry live. I'm so old that I forget having seen legends in their own time.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 3:39pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Chuck Berry factoid according to wikipedia: In the late 1980s, Berry bought a restaurant in Wentzville, Missouri, and in 1990 he was sued by several women who claimed that he had installed a video camera in the ladies' bathroom. Berry claimed that he had the camera installed to catch red-handed a worker who was suspected of stealing from the restaurant. Though his guilt was never proven in court, Berry opted for a class action settlement with 59 women. It cost Berry over $1.2 million plus legal fees.Reportedly, a police raid on his house did find videotapes of women using the restroom, and one of the women was a minor.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 3:41pm rrg:

I've heard the slowed-down version of "Jolene", and I'm a real fan of messing-around-with-audio, but I honestly don't get what all the fuss is. I love the original full-speed version (and will play it again as soon as this Irwin thing is done for the day) and I think it's fine the way it is.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 3:42pm G:

@Caryn: Scand. note -- saw Andrew Zimmern the other day on a repeat sampling Surströmming on the roof of the Swedish Embassy in DC
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 3:42pm rrg:

But what's all this about an almost-drowned astronaut?

You're not going to make me go to the Internet, are you?
  Wed. 8/21/13 3:43pm ADL:

It's amazing, RRG, that in 1970 Chuck Berry was already transitioning (transitioned?) to nostalgia act (though I'm sure he was great live). Kind of crazy how he really got there first with so much.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 3:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That's a great line rrg (legends in time).

- Yes, the Artist (Berry) who most archetypally represents the form of Rock'n'Roll has a few idiosyncracies. & Pete Townshend who helped invent the 6' amplifier & wrote 'MyGeneration' & smashed guitars was sexually abused as a child.

@rrg: I think the "Jolene" is just lovely in how it doesn't sound slowed down. I think part of the credit has to go to Dolly for enunciating the words the way she does.

Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 3:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 3:53pm rrg:

It's certainly interesting (such things usually are) though I'm not sure it still sounds like Dolly. The opening guitar intro (it's a guitar, right?) is so familiar to me that I recognized it as "Jolene" before I was told what I was listening to.

My relationship to all awards is complicated: whenever someone I like wins one, I'm thrilled about the recognition and proof of the awesomeness of the person or group I admire. Awards in the music business would make more sense if musicians wrote/recorded music specifically to win awards in the way some books, movies and TV shows are made not for commercial potential, but for the prestige. Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:05pm rrg:

Don't get me started. I never got to hear that Sandy show of Irwin's and I never will because IT WASN'T RECORDED.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:06pm Caryn:

I agree wholeheartedly with Matthyou. Now if only Ken would've archived his uncensored Sandy shows...
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:06pm rrg:

And I was kinda too busy at the time to listen. And also powerless.
  Wed. 8/21/13 5:07pm Jan:

Irwin- You have me looking back to that Wednesday after Sandy. I had to leave my abode and missed your show that day. It wasn't archived was it.
I needed you that day to make sense of it, but alas I was left to other devices besides the radio or internet. Was the show taped?
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Are the MC5 in the RRHoF? The New York Dolls? The Nuggets box set? Okay - they got Patti Smith...
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:08pm Matthyou Springwater:

@Caryn: I wonder if anyone did record it...

Also, it's been a long day. I didn't even notice I still had my Hearty White moniker up from yesterday. Oh well, I'll just leave it up the rest of this show, start what I finished, etc etc...
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:09pm glenn:

ooh! ooh! magazine! john mcgeoch IS THE GREATEST.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:09pm glenn:

or was, technically.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:09pm Mike East:

Its effing hot in here!! Can someone please come through with a $10,000 backline order so my boss can stop laying people off and I can turn the goddamn air on?
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

King Crimson? Hawkwind?
- Whose Hall is this thing - ?! I suppose you answered that...
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:10pm Irwin:

The Sandy show -- which included lots of BLUE material -- was not archived, tho the playlist was.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:10pm glenn:

i'll be there in 5, mike.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:13pm Parq:

Good comment pieces in the Good Grey Lady Online from Schlessinger and Collingwood, respectively, on their approaches to songwriting.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:13pm rrg:

I still say you should recreate that show. You have the playlist, you have the memories, you have the Internet.
  Wed. 8/21/13 5:14pm Jan:

As it was not archived, you must do your best to re-enact the program as you special commemorative edition. No doubt the listenership will swell for such a program. Specially if it is promoted on the station for the week before.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:14pm Caryn:

@Matthyou: I seem to remember someone saying they were recording the show at home, so supposedly there are at least partial records of those shows somewhere. Can't remember who it was, though.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Thx Parq. This I want to know.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:15pm Mike East:

Thanks, glenn. Just call in with a credit card if you can. We really appreciate it. :)
I'll reserve the Steinway and all our B3's for you.

Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:16pm Parq:

Irwin, some of us still remember when you first introduced Jandek to FMU listeners. The wonder of it all, eh?
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:16pm rrg:

Track that person down, Caryn. Who said this and when was it said? Is it on a playlist comment thread somewhere?
  Wed. 8/21/13 5:18pm lou:

Isn't this the guy arrested for having ricin? Very outsider move!
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:18pm Matthyou Springwater:

Rob Alberg needs to put another album out. Does he have a Bandcamp??...
  Wed. 8/21/13 5:18pm Laura L:

Alberg is still single and maybe still in the slammer for making ricin, isn't he.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:18pm Irwin:

Same guy. Famous!
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:19pm G:

I can't believe no one snapped up this gem of a man. :)
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:19pm Matthyou Springwater:

@Caryn: I'll dig through the playlists later and see who that might have been--I relish looking through our playlists for primary sources!

oy, poor Robert
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:20pm Matthyou Springwater:

@G: If he's still in the joint, he'll get the attention of prison groupies at least. Jail has that effect on men--even Milhouse's Dad! :)

@RRN63: Good album title.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:22pm Caryn:

@rrg & Matthyou: yep, it was mentioned on a playlist, but I can't remember if someone said it as the shows were going on or during a later show when we were lamenting the lack of recordings.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:22pm Matthyou Springwater:

@Irwin: Speaking of which..got your old "Incorrect and Proud" from the Prize Warehouse this year! It's excellent, lived up to my hype! I especially like Rockin' With Barbara's "I Like To".

It sounds familiar, did you ever use that melody as bed music?
  Wed. 8/21/13 5:23pm lou:

Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:23pm rrg:

That's in the Prize Warehouse? Maybe I can get it next year.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:24pm Mike East:

ok, glenn. Send me your rider...please leave off the catering/hotels/and transport. That's somebody else's job. ;)
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Matt: Thx but 'OneNoteSamba' is a Jazz Standard...
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:25pm Matthyou Springwater:

@rrg: Anything that's still on the list you can order! But you should hurry, it's from 2002 so there might not be many left.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:26pm Matthyou Springwater:

Just like Antonio Carlos Jobim, stealing that idea just a half-century before we could use it. But, he's Antonio Carlos Jobim, so I can't stay mad at him.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:28pm rrg:

You can "order" from the Prize Warehouse at any time? Like it was amazon.com, you mean?
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:28pm Matthyou Springwater:

Wooooooo! This is a great Lane & Luis one!!
I've said before that if there's any justice, this should be the #1 mainstream pop song in the US.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:28pm Droll:

Mike, Don't you work at SIR? Maybe you could get Adrian Belew to reimburse SIR for whatever he's doing to their amp -- he's clearly not using it according to the manufacturer's specifications: 24.media.tumblr.com...
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Why can't the Stones make records like this 'SuckIt' for themselves...sigh - if i ruled the world...
Wed. 8/21/13 5:29pm Denise in DC:

I have Incorrect and Proud! It's one of my prize CDs. Especially "Diary of an Unborn Child." I played it at a Xmas party once and literally had someone rolling on the floor laughing with tears running down her face.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:29pm Matthyou Springwater:

@rrg: I don't think so...I meant order it when Marathontime rolls around. But check out "the consumer marketplace at WFMU's Crapola Central"--some Warehouse items are actually available at FMU's online store year-round.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:30pm rsj:

Wed. 8/21/13 5:33pm Denise in DC:

Otis has been wed! That's lovely!
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:33pm Matthyou Springwater:

@Denise: That guy should have done a very late night Christian puppet show--stoners wouldn't watch anything else!
I think "Diary" is avail for download at the 365 Days Project.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:34pm Mike East:

@Droll - no, SIR is our competition...at the moment, I think they may be winning. don't tell them that, though.

It's not ALL beautiful. As you discovered.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:34pm glenn:

did you have a montreal bagel?
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:35pm Matthyou Springwater:

"Grim Montreal"...is that anything like "Ruined Upsala"?
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:35pm rrg:

Well, yes. West Island, actually (Bagel de l'Ouest).
  Wed. 8/21/13 5:35pm Laura L:

Let's ask Otis to put together a GrimMontreal tune for us one day.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:35pm rrg:

And Cote-St-Luc BBQ.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:36pm Matthyou Springwater:

Muriel's Treasure! De orizhinal!

@glenn: Never been there, but I've long heard that they rival NYC's. Besides poutine it's one of the first things I'd try.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:36pm Alison Porchnik:

I had a 2-day old Montreal bagel for breakfast this morning. It was pretty good.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:36pm rrg:

And French Fries with gravy.

Not all at the same time, though.

"Smell hater!"

Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:39pm rrg:

Yes, I've heard from Rebecca that there's a place in Brooklyn that gets a shipment of bagels from Montréal every Saturday morning. Some guy leaves there at midnight with a car full of bagels and drives to Brooklyn.

That could just be an urban legend, though.
  Wed. 8/21/13 5:39pm Skippy:

Daddy! Where have you been?
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:39pm Matthyou Springwater:

@AP: I watched "Annie Hall" recently, and discovered that Carol Kane's character from that was in the credits as "Alison Portchnik"! Never knew of that connection before! :)

There is not, or need not be, any rivalry. They're different things, both worth our attention. We need not choose.
  Wed. 8/21/13 5:40pm Skippy:

I disagree
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:41pm G:

It has been harder to get *real* boiled bagels in recent years. Caveat bagel emptor.

I knew smelly tongues looked just as they felt, but I had no idea they were also fascists.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:41pm Matthyou Springwater:

I'm sure Sexton would like the smell of ichthammol ointment then; the most putrid petrol-based ointment I've found thus far.

I am woman, see me travel
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:42pm rrg:

Wait, you're not saying that "Allison Porchnik" is a pseudonym, are you?

Damn, you can't trust anyone. All the rest of us are using our real names, AP.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:42pm Matthyou Springwater:

Hmm, Helen Reddy was a Cilla Black vocal-and-brass type at some point? Should've stayed with this style.
Wed. 8/21/13 5:42pm Denise in DC:

I recognized Helen Reddy's voice immediately. Should I be worried?
Wed. 8/21/13 5:43pm Denise in DC:

Also, the WFMU website refuses to let me log in.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:43pm Alison Porchnik:

@Matthyou The original is spelled (in the credits) with two Ls but I had to spell it with one for reasons I don't remember.
@RRG - it is true, you're referring to Mile End (never been). I believe there is also another establishment that imports the raw materials to the city and is making them here.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:43pm Matthyou Springwater:

Yeah, I know rrg! It's why I once greeted you as "errrgg".
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:43pm G:

Porchnik is one of the commonest names in the NY/NJ area.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:43pm glenn:

there's two bakeries. fairmount and st. viateur. most people, west island included, sell fairmount.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:44pm rrg:

We don't believe you. What have you done with the REAL Denise?
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:45pm rrg:

They bake them themselves at the place to which I was referring (Bagel de l'Ouest on Sources Rd. in Roxboro).
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:46pm Matthyou Springwater:

@G: I used to think a Porchnik family had a racket on all the borscht counters in NY, but I discovered that they were all different operators with the same last name.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:46pm rrg:

There are a lot more than two bagel bakeries on the island of Montreal, I would contend.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...you'd think being a porch-nik would be primarily a Southern preoccupation...
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:48pm glenn:

huh. i stand (or sit) corrected.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:48pm rrg:

AP, if there is a place in New York (or "even" Brooklyn) that's baking its own Montreal-style bagels, I would love to know where it is.

Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:51pm Droll:

Montreal-style bagels? Like the ones at Tim Horton's? Those are called doughnuts here in the states. Montreal isn't even the Great White North, Seattle is further north than Montreal.

DeFeudis horribly mistuned/mistimed "Desperado" is a true treasure. Another artist deserving his own Anthology box set.

Holy shit. A song for Phil Milstein! I used to work with him in a typesetting shop in Cambridge.
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:56pm rrg:

Ah, "Mlle End" is a Mtl neighborhood so I was confused. It's also the name of this Brooklyn deli. But it says right there that someone drives bagels to Brooklyn weekly from St-Viateur Bagel in Montreal, doesn't it?
Avatar Wed. 8/21/13 5:56pm Andrew Waterloo:

The best bagel I've had in awhile was a massive thing that came from Lindsay Ontario.
