Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:04pm Dave Mandl:

Evening, everyone. And welcome to guest DJ Al Margolis.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:09pm davex:

Good evening Dave and Al.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:11pm Ike:

Hello hello hello hello hello hello
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:11pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

- always great to be here.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:16pm Philthy woman:

Loving Neporiniai Kakaowa/Ez Az Ember by Mohammad. Thank you for introducing me to it!
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:21pm davex:

Interesting track name: Lithuanian? Polish? Hungarian.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:21pm Droll:

The lack of decent playback decks has also baffled me about this "cassette resurgence". Still, it's just like when cassettes were popular the first time: players don't last and they destroy tapes.
  Sun. 8/18/13 9:27pm trish:

Splicing out mangled tape is easy.
How do you fix a wrecked cd?
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:28pm Dave Mandl:

Hey there davex, RRN63, PW, Drill, trish.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:29pm Dave Mandl:

@trish: True about CDs. That's worse than a skipping record.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:30pm Dave Mandl:

@Philthy: You're welcome. It was my first time hearing it too. Really lovely.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:31pm Dave Mandl:

And hello Ike! I left you out.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:32pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: I have to admit that as a radio DJ I hate cassettes for another reason: They're impossible to cue up compared to LPs and especially CDs.
  Sun. 8/18/13 9:33pm bloopy:

Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:37pm Droll:

I'd be hip to Reel-to-Reel resurgence. Of course we'll all end up complaining about having to bake old tapes. The cost alone of open reel tape would keep the hipsters out, so it could be like a 70's Hi-Fi resurgence.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:37pm Ike:

Droll, huh? I rarely had any trouble with cassettes getting eaten. Just once or twice in 20 years. Maybe I was just lucky. I had a lot more trouble with vinyl. Maybe my folks were just too cheap with the bottom-of-the-barrel needles, but our tape decks were always reliable. But yeah, when I became a college DJ, cassettes were too hard to cue and lost some of their luster.
  Sun. 8/18/13 9:38pm Little Fyodor:

Hi to Al!! Long time!! Play some WoG, ha-ha!! Evan just turned over all the old WoG reel tapes to me (what we made most of the original pre-mix down recordings on) cause he woulda thrown 'em out instead! Well, there's one less usable closet, ha-ha! Have a good show, enjoying it, hope you're swell....
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:38pm pacific standard simon:

Hey Dave, you forgot me too.

'Cause, you know, I just got here.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:40pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Hey, glad you could make it!
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:41pm Dave Mandl:

Fyodor! How's it going? Great to hear from you. Al says hi.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:42pm Droll:

[staring at Ike like he just got out of prison] No real problems with cassettes during your 20-year sentence? Yeah.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:42pm pacific standard simon:

Me, too. Work has been ending at 6 this week. Cold beer hits the spot.
  Sun. 8/18/13 9:42pm trish:

I'd splice to fix a crappy old tape with lousy levels that I love.
Splicing instead of digital editing? Scratch animations in film are still neat, and glad to learn the reel techniques, but nah-uh.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:45pm pacific standard simon:

My biggest complaint about cassettes was that the big record company pre-recorded tapes would start to develop an unpleasant squeal towards the end of each side after they had been played a few times. Especially the budget line tapes.
  Sun. 8/18/13 9:50pm Little Fyodor:

Dave! Great to hear it's great to be heard! I'm fine.... I'd say more but I'm listening to you guys kibbutz!! Hey, you just mentioned me! I gotta listen....
  Sun. 8/18/13 9:51pm Little Fyodor:

Francisco Lopez, I think I saw him in Boulder several years ago, great show! (whoever it was!)
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 9:58pm pacific standard simon:

So far, my back issues of OPtion and Sound Choice have survived the culling from 3 major WA -> CA (or vice versa) moves in 20 years.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:00pm Droll:

Boxes of old magazines are light compared to boxes of LPs! How many of those made it through three cullings?
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:03pm pacific standard simon:

I cut the LPs and cassettes down by 2/3 during the last move. Most of the cassettes that survived were homemade Over The Edge and Subgenius tapes that I hope to transfer to mp3s.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:05pm pacific standard simon:

"I'm with you in Rockland!" -- Allen Ginsberg
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:08pm Droll:

PSS, I also have a box of cassettes I'd love to transfer (to WAV or AIFF), but I refer back to my comment on lack of decent quality playback devices. If you find a way to do that, count me in!

Gotta love when the guests correct the DJ about the ID. Good riddance, NYX! Only 3 to go.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:13pm pacific standard simon:

I have a USB cassette deck. Dunno about "decent quality", (the phrase sounds odd when applied to cassette tapes) but it seems to work well enough -- if only I wasn't so lazy.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:20pm Droll:

Decent, in this context, is defined as "Doesn't destroy the thing you're trying to listen to".
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:25pm pacific standard simon:

Haven't seen THAT complaint yet from people who bought the same deck I did. The only bad reviews have been from people on the low side of the bell curve who can't understand that you have to use audio processing software to handle digital audio files.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:27pm Droll:

Digital?!?! I'm trying to get a jump on the reel-to-reel fad and transfer direct.
  Sun. 8/18/13 10:43pm 12539:

Life Cafe in the East Village has closed. I think the Brooklyn one did as well.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:44pm Dave Mandl:

Ah, I didn't know. I was at the Manhattan one not very long ago. Maybe last year?
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:44pm Dave Mandl:

Too bad. That was always a good place, and very vegetarian-friendly (I'm a veg).
  Sun. 8/18/13 10:49pm jeanne:

Qwa Digs Under Paris! from Miekal And and Liz Was--she passed away about 10 yrs ago, way too young. ..
  Sun. 8/18/13 10:50pm jeanne:

also, Sue Ann Harkey from Audio Letter is living in Seattle and plays music still tho sporadically...Sharon and DAvid not so much.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:51pm Dave Mandl:

@Jeanne: Yup, I knew them. I'm FB friends with Miekal Was.
  Sun. 8/18/13 10:51pm trish:

@Droll 'Decency' Reel destroy to 'harm' and it applies in so many contexts.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:52pm Dave Mandl:

Ha, we were just talking about SAH. She moved back to NY a year or two ago and I saw her then, but lost touch.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:52pm Dave Mandl:

Miekal And, not Miekal Was!
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 10:54pm Dave Mandl:

@jeanne: Sounds like you know them? I don't know you, do I?
  Sun. 8/18/13 10:57pm jeanne:

Dont *think* so! yes I knew all them, still in touch with SueAnn. I was part of teh early Gargoyle Mechanique crowd, I make films now. I played one at Generator yesterday, opened for If Bwana in fact!!
  Sun. 8/18/13 11:08pm Adam:

Awesome show and very inspiring stuff! I try to pick up cassette decks from secondhand shops or refurbished 80s or early 90s units (Technics, Onkyo, Sony). Have had pretty good luck with them!
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:11pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks, Adam. And Jeanne, Al says hi. Sorry I missed your film yesterday.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:12pm fleep:

Fine show, Dave.

My deck: www.vintagecassette.com...
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:14pm Dave Mandl:

@fleep: Nice.
  Sun. 8/18/13 11:29pm 12539:

What's wrong with the Mandl track? Is it more than 2% rock and roll?
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:32pm Dave Mandl:

Not even 1%. Actually, I'm not sure I even remember what the track is.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:32pm Dave Mandl:

It's under my "band" name, which was Tone Poets.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:41pm Droll:

DM, I believe it's customary to put the band name in quotes, not the fact it was a band. It's been aired a few times, but it was always by DJs with 3 hours to fill. I mean, it takes a long time before you resort to flexis.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:43pm Dave Mandl:

Well, "band" because it was just me.
  Sun. 8/18/13 11:48pm ledzeppelinsucks:

Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:48pm Droll:

Well. then it takes a "long" time.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:48pm Dave Mandl:

There was also a cassette, which is up on the Free Music Archive somewhere.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:49pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: I "agree."
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:49pm Dave Mandl:

(But I do, really.)
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:50pm Dave Mandl:

Hey, Led Zeppelin doesn't suck.
  Sun. 8/18/13 11:55pm jeanne:

beautiful show! thx to both of you. oh and, i drive my cassette deck ('91 Honda) ;)
  Sun. 8/18/13 11:56pm 12539:

Thanks, Dave and Al.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:57pm Droll:

Thanks Al for coming in and sparing DM the embarrassment of playing progressive rock. Without your intervention, DM would have wasted another 18-minutes of airtime on a drum solo by Moving Gelatine Plates.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:58pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: That's next week!
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:58pm Dave Mandl:

And thanks everyone. Have a great week.
Avatar Sun. 8/18/13 11:59pm Droll:

DM, "Figures".
