Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 1:39pm Mike East:

@fred - I think Bud is so popular because you can drink a whole bunch of them, which seems to be the point of a lot of people, as opposed to a good beer that actually tastes like something and I've found I can only drink 2 or 3 of.
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 1:41pm DCE:

oh, so it was the same brand Budweiser? I guess I thought they had the "original" over there and it would be different. Blech. Anyway I drank like 4 Gennesee tallboys last night so who am I to judge?
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:42pm kirk from beer city usa:

hey tim! this is getting to be a regular thing. I was in Denver a few years back. I don't recall what I did for food or beer, but I always check beer advocate for a list of places. For Denver it's beeradvocate.com...

Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:45pm Andrew Waterloo:

I think at the end of the day, the average person isn't that concerned with what their drinking, watching, or listening to. As long as they're enjoying it and it didn't take too much energy to get it. Now, they'll portray themselves as more discerning and ultimately rational about their choices.
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 1:46pm fred:

@Bryce: I'm somewhat familiar with Tim Goldie, though I've seen him paired with Mattin instead
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 1:46pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@fred: Guinness is a fine thing (if on tap & not served TOO COLD (as we americans seem too effing keen on doing) -- but the ABV% is fairly low; it's definitely calibrated for many many many pints in a sitting.
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 1:47pm Bryce:

oh cool! i don't know very much about either of them, but this triple cd sure is lovely!
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 1:49pm fred:

@RTD: the EXTRA COLD Guinness is a thing of the manager! (or the devil, I forget, but it's definitely unsavory)
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 1:50pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

definitely never want to be "that beer-snob guy" but many's the time I end up warming a pint with hands before touching the friggin' thing.

Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 1:55pm fred:

@RTD: As far as I'm concerned, the low ABV% is fine, I can walk home after that. Some Belgian beersies have caused somewhat lengthy detours I could hardly afford sleepwise
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 1:58pm DCE:

these days I am seeking out low ABV beers as well; problem being I consume just as quickly whether high or low
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 1:59pm Andrew Waterloo:

yah, love IPAs but I can't afford to have one with dinner when I'm nodding off over homework around 7pm.
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:00pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I'm squarely in the fewer/stronger camp (though not IPAs). Also old & grumpy enough to require sensible sleepsies. Fewer = non-rockstar bedtime....
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:03pm fred:

I thought IPA was a generic term for "strong beer". I guess I was wrong, can somewhat enlighten me?
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:04pm Carmichael:

I'm an IPA man all the way. It helps to realize that 2 are usually enough for me. My wallet and my drive back out to Pleasant Valley Sunday land both thank me.
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:04pm stefica:

India Pale Ale
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:07pm Carmichael:

Fred, an IPA is an extra-hopped version of a standard pale ale, which raises the sugars and consequently the ABV level. The British found that their ales would wilt on the long voyage to India, so they hopped them up to fortify them. An IPA is usually 6.5 to 7 ABV.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:07pm Andrew Waterloo:

IPA is your hoppy beer.
Fri. 8/16/13 2:08pm Bradd in Spokane:

Not necessarily super strong though. See Double IPA and Imperial IPA.
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:09pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

not quite the hop-head myself, so more weapons-grade stouts are my kick. Or English-style bitter wherever available here in podunk DC...
  Fri. 8/16/13 2:09pm Marmalade Kitty:

Westons or Aspalls organic cider has a good kick!
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:10pm Mike East:

I had an IPA with some oysters and clams yesterday. Local, but not THAT hoppy. delicious.
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:10pm Carmichael:

And there's now a category called West Coast IPAs, which are either double-hopped or dry-hopped, either of which will get you into the 7.5 to 9 ABV. Will make your taste buds curl up and pulsate, too.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:10pm Wretch:

"IPA" makes me think of "Epa! Epa! Thousand eyes!"
Fri. 8/16/13 2:11pm Bradd in Spokane:

We got the whole west coast IPA thing out here.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:11pm Andrew Waterloo:

I usually pick up something strong, and then something more drinkable like a premium ale
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:12pm tim from champaign:

I'm on a hop kick right now. I go in cycles where hopped beers are too much for my palette. Then other times I seek out the hops.
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:12pm fred:

I'll confess to being ignorant about English beers. I'm in France and the Belgian stuff is much more common over here when you go beyond the crappy local stuff. Even Guinness has to be earned: not uncommon in bars, but the good one is elusive. Sounds worth looking for though, "hoppy" is good, and Belgian beer is often too sugary for me
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:12pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

...a good strong Belgian is also the pause that refreshes. And causes a wee stumble here & there.
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:12pm Carmichael:

Sierra Nevada is the go-to beer out here for bbqs and tailgate parties. Sometimes Racer 5 from Bear Republic.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:14pm Andrew Waterloo:

We have something called Mill Street Organic that has been really popular around here.
Fri. 8/16/13 2:14pm Bradd in Spokane:

Sierra Nevada Pale is the run-of-the-mill out here for sure. Racer 5 is a notch or two above in quality for me.
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:14pm Carmichael:

Belgian beers are becoming quite the boutique item on the West Coast. A little too carbonated for my tastes; the bubbles are like champagne bubbles to me.
  Fri. 8/16/13 2:14pm johnk77:

peace mike east
after riding to work
i will find right moment
and have a beer
possibly Sierra Nevada
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:15pm Cheri Pi:

If I find that I'm suddenly overhopped, I'll throw in a few ice-cubes to cut that freshly mown grass flavor and it does the trick nicely [shhhhhh...that's our secret]
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:15pm fred:

@RTD: which is why I'm wary of the stuff. Late enough at night that wee stumble can be the difference when it comes to catching the last train home
Avatar    Fri. 8/16/13 2:16pm Cheri Pi:

I want to trip over the vacuum cord tonight, I'm dranking.
Avatar Fri. 8/16/13 2:16pm tim from champaign:

I had a Short's Anniversary Ale last night that a friend brought to me from Northern Michigan. It was extremely enjoyable: beeradvocate.com...

@tim: a splash of water can be good with the cask strength stuff, though in my opinion you'll get the same olfactory release without diluting the taste by pouring a smaller amount and letting it rest for a few minutes before drinking. Wine glasses are better than straight so-called whisky ones, pour it to maximum air contact and let it rest a bit. Ice is a big no-no, it dulls the taste
