Evening, folks.

'Evening, Mr. Mandl. This recalls the excitement of '70s records-by-mail, sending away to NMDS for Mother Mallard lp's.

Evening!

Back from dinner -- howdy, Dave.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:10pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Reeshard, Andrew, PSS.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:11pm Dave Mandl:

@Reeshard: Ah, I remember NMDS. Though I lived nearby, so I was able to go there in person.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:13pm Dave Mandl:

...and it was in the '80s. What a great place.
  Sun. 8/11/13 9:17pm HollyT:

Hiya, Dave!
Avatar Sun. 8/11/13 9:17pm deanland:

Hi, Dave. Update from a few weeks ago: my 1965 Ludwig Pearl drum set with the Zildjian cymbals and all Gretsch accessories is now in storage. At some point a friend with a band in NC will take custody of the kit. I can't bring myself to sell it, despite its apparent high value. I would rather know music is being made of it. If only my son had wanted to be a drummer...
Avatar Sun. 8/11/13 9:17pm Reeshard:

You lucky creature. I had to make do with the typewriting-xeroxed-onto-green-paper catalogs. I guess my equivalent experience was living near John Storm Roberts' Original Music in upstate NY - also in the '80s - another cave of wonders.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:18pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Holly!
Avatar Sun. 8/11/13 9:19pm deanland:

More drumming news: at the New York Blues Hall of Fame 2013 induction ceremonies last Sunday at BB King's I got to see legendary NY drummer George Morales play with a few inductees. Most impressive: his playing with Joe Taino
.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:20pm Dave Mandl:

@deanland: I haven't played my bass in quite a while, but I'd never ever ever sell it. 1974 Fender Precision.
Avatar Sun. 8/11/13 9:22pm Droll:

[making sad puppy-dog eyes at DM].
Let me put new strings on that for you. Please.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:28pm Ike:

Holy crud, Dave, you weren't kidding about the PATH train service going ker-splat on Sundays. I was on it earlier and it was appallingly late. A complete mess. We need a PATH version of the Straphangers' Campaign -- as far as I can tell, no such thing exists.

Great sounds.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:28pm pacific standard simon:

You never know what purpose your wonderful old instrument may be put to; I have a Premier floor tom being used as a coffee table.
Avatar Sun. 8/11/13 9:29pm Cory:

there's no reason for me to watch Breaking Bad, I live in the midwest. if I want to see meth-heads I just have to go outside
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:30pm pacific standard simon:

Never got interested in Breaking Bad either, so there's your listener base, Dave.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:34pm Ike:

I love Br. Bad, but I have a DVR. DVRs rule.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:38pm pacific standard simon:

Holy fuck, I love this album!

I recently heard on my radio set that the TV fad was over.
Surely Alice meets or exceeds any 2% limit!

hey pss - me too! Over the years, I've listened to that lp as much as any other. Wish Warner Bros. would remaster it and punch up those Gibson SGs Michael and Glen played.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:44pm pacific standard simon:

Why is Bob Dobbs watching Home Shopping Network?
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:45pm pacific standard simon:

It's true -- that album made an SG fan outa me.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:46pm jmd:

@pss re: Dobbs. Because he mis-heard they had slack on sale today.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:47pm pacific standard simon:

Took a while for the whole world to see
Just like a tragic smell
Can't ya tell?
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:47pm Dave Mandl:

Is that true about Neal Smith? "Love It to Death" is an absolute classic. Probably that band's best record.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:47pm Dave Mandl:

@Ike: True about the PATH. Worse recently.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:48pm pacific standard simon:

It's true. I was browsing his website a few years back. At least he's alive.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:50pm Dave Mandl:

@PSS: Agreed. It's odd that, unlike Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, etc., the real/best lineup of the Alice Cooper group never reformed. They must really hate each other.
Sun. 8/11/13 9:51pm Lonely Planet Boy:

Imagine looking at a house w/ an agent; says he, "by the way, I played drums on 'Dead Babies'".
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:54pm pacific standard simon:

I think I remember something about some fan gathering featuring everyone but Alice and Glenn, who was dead by that time.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 9:54pm jmd:

@DM and Glen Buxton died so...

Here's a CNN Money page about Neal Smith (good picture!).

Also I think Col. Parker's ghost wants a whole shitload of money. Even more for Jim, Janice and Jimi.

Wait, Glen Buxton died? How did I forget about that? So much for a reunion.

Here's one I need to read:

The Alice Cooper Band (original) is one of those things that has huge rewards for the insomniac web searcher.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 10:16pm George of Troy:

Good evening, Dave. Liking this Bohdan Mazurek very much.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 10:18pm Dave Mandl:

@PSS: Wow. What a bizarre piece of trivia.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 10:18pm Dave Mandl:

Hey there, George.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 10:21pm pacific standard simon:

It sounds like Dennis might have Crohn's Disease. I hope not - that's an awful thing.
Avatar Sun. 8/11/13 10:23pm Reeshard:

I hope not as well - Crohn's Disease is what clocked Nicky Hopkins.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 10:30pm pacific standard simon:

But on a brighter note, here's a thing about the Alice Cooper dual Gibson SG sound:

www2.gibson.com...

Dave, you should play "Lay Down and Die, Goodbye" from Easy Action -- that would fit right in with some of the goodies you play.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 10:35pm Dave Mandl:

You know, I haven't heard "Easy Action" in ages. I should play it, but I don't want to play two AC tunes in the same show.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 10:36pm Dave Mandl:

Love that article about the SGs. Thanks!
Avatar Sun. 8/11/13 10:38pm Droll:

Why not? You flaunt the 2% rule all the time. There's no Mellotron, go ahead and play it.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 10:44pm pacific standard simon:

I hope this Al Margolis is the musician, not the children's book illustrator.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 10:51pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: True, I have no respect for rules, even my own.

Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 10:52pm Dave Mandl:

@PSS: Never heard of the children's book illustrator, so no. There was a guitar teacher named Al Margolis in my nabe when I was a kid. Not him either.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 10:53pm Dave Mandl:

@IXetc.: Thanks!

Some famous players of Slingerland Drums, other than the mighty Neal Smith: Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Jim McCarty, Antonio "Fito" de la Parra, Bev Bevan, Nigel Olsson, Bun E. Carlos, Tre Cool, Neil Peart. Owned by Gibson, interestingly.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:04pm Dave Mandl:

A friend of mine used to work with someone named Slingerland. People were constantly asking her if she was related to the drum Slingerlands. (She wasn't.)
  Sun. 8/11/13 11:05pm HollyT:

OK, I love this.
  Sun. 8/11/13 11:06pm HollyT:

Some Dorothy Ashby would make a nice follow-up. Just sayin'. :))
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:06pm Dave Mandl:

@Holly: You mean Abbey Lincoln? That's a fantastic record, all of it.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:07pm pacific standard simon:

Hmm, that was Stanley Turrentine's brother, Tommy, on trumpet. I should find that Abbey Lincoln album.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:08pm Dave Mandl:

I finally saw her live around 10 years ago, somewhere in Harlem. Better late than never.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:08pm Dave Mandl:

@PSS: Yes, seriously. It's one of the greatest late-night records.
  Sun. 8/11/13 11:11pm trish:

I enjoyed that Afro-Blue a lot. Completed a design project that's long been in the works during it. Hooray.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:11pm pacific standard simon:

Records should be archived according to time of day. At least, mine should. Early morning, mid-afternoon, late night. Like that.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:13pm pacific standard simon:

I can only play Jefferson Airplane mid-afternoon to early evening.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:15pm fleep:

When do you play Starship?
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:16pm pacific standard simon:

Um, NEVER.
Avatar Sun. 8/11/13 11:16pm Droll:

Fleep, Surely that goes into the time of day we don't speak of.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:18pm cklequ:

I haven't listened to Jefferson Aeroplane in years. But when i did, the mid-afternoon/early evening hours were the only acceptable times.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:18pm pacific standard simon:

It should go without saying that World of Echo fits into the time of day we call "free time".
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:21pm pacific standard simon:

My dad used to go to the Manne Hole. Probably contributed to the break-up of his marriage.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:25pm Dave Mandl:

I'm very into the music/time-of-day link. I did a big piece/chart on the subject last year that ended up not getting published. I should revive it, because I put a lot of work into it.
  Sun. 8/11/13 11:26pm HollyT:

Dave, me too. I want to see that chart!
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:27pm pacific standard simon:

I wish you would, because I think it's a valid association.
  Sun. 8/11/13 11:30pm HollyT:

I have always found MOST folk music to be best in the morning, for example. The earlier the better.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:32pm pacific standard simon:

Does 12 noon make people think of power chords (5ths)?

@Holly T - That's when I listen to The Holy Modal Rounders and The Lovin' Spoonful.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:33pm Dave Mandl:

@Holly: I actually put it together in an Excel spreadsheet. I'll dig it out. I've got it somewhere.
Avatar Sun. 8/11/13 11:33pm Droll:

I wouldn't have thought of that on my own, but it's an interesting idea. "Naptime" and "Latenight" better captures the process of looking for something to listen to than marketing genres (rock, electronic, jazz, classical, etc.).
Of course, those aren't times of day, per-se.
  Sun. 8/11/13 11:34pm HollyT:

I usually listen to Raymond Scott while getting ready in in the morning. Late morning, 10-11 am. Also R Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:37pm Dave Mandl:

Folk-rock like Fairport or Steeleye Span are Saturday afternoon. "Early music" (esp. lute music) is Sunday morning.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:37pm pacific standard simon:

Of course, these things shift according to our personal schedules. Early morning, for me when I was on graveyard shift, was around 12 midnight -- now it really IS early morning.
  Sun. 8/11/13 11:38pm HollyT:

Right on, D. Agree 100%.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:40pm fleep:

I have music filed under Rain, Drive Too Fast, Foggy Morning, City Walk, Coastline ...
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:40pm pacific standard simon:

I used to have a girlfriend who I still associate with Bach organ music on Sunday mornings, but I think that was the radio station's fault...
  Sun. 8/11/13 11:41pm HollyT:

Agreed, PSS. Also, I think we tend to associate time of day with the context in which we were first exposed to the music. Punk/post-punk/no-wave/nu-wave etc. will never be nighttime music for me. Always mid-late afternoon music, probably because I used to listen to it when I got home from school in the 80s.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:41pm pacific standard simon:

HA!
Avatar Sun. 8/11/13 11:42pm Droll:

Jezzz, I've been using alphabetical all along... I really need to shake things up. Looking forward to seeing that article, DM!

What time is it? DOUBLE-TIME!
     Sun. 8/11/13 11:43pm 12539:

I've listened to wfmu so long that almost anything at any time can seem appropriate.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:43pm Dave Mandl:

@Holly: Totally true. First time I heard Who's Next, many years ago, was on a Saturday afternoon, and it's still a Saturday afternoon record for me to this day.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:43pm Dave Mandl:

@fleep: No way! Is that really true?
  Sun. 8/11/13 11:43pm trish:

I was just thinking during this show last week how nice that classical piece was at this/that hour. Usually only ever in the mornings and a bit in the aft.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:43pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: It's in 6/8 and 5/8.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:44pm Dave Mandl:

...among others.
Avatar Sun. 8/11/13 11:45pm Droll:

Got it, Lars Hollmer to be played between 6-8 weekdays, 5-8 weekends.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:46pm pacific standard simon:

Frank Zappa will remain forever "late night", for me.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:46pm Dave Mandl:

@trish: Yeah, when you do a radio show you have to flexible. I can't say, "I'll never play so-and-so on a Sunday night." But if my show were on Thursday mornings it would probably sound at least a little different.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:47pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Sorry, I thought you were asking about the time signature of that Lars Hollmer song, because it was really odd.
  Sun. 8/11/13 11:48pm trish:

Time signatures of radio.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:49pm pacific standard simon:

@Dave and trish - that's what I was calling "free time", because it's different when you're organizing radio sets in a small room.
Avatar Sun. 8/11/13 11:51pm Droll:

HA! I was joking about it being miscued at 45rpm. All humor is filtered out through these computer things. It's a drag.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:51pm pacific standard simon:

Huh. This song makes me want to put on a REM song from their first EP. I'm not sure that's a feeling I'm comfortable with.
     Sun. 8/11/13 11:56pm 12539:

Thanks, Dave. Good luck with the train.
  Sun. 8/11/13 11:56pm HollyT:

Great show, Dave! Talk soon!
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:57pm pacific standard simon:

Aw crap, Dave, time DOES fly! Is this the end, my friend?

Man is a melon farmer.

It's been fun, tonight. See you next week.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:57pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks, Holly. Thanks, everyone. Great to see you all again. Have a wonderful week.
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:57pm pacific standard simon:

Wait, is this garage Black Sabbath?!
Avatar Sun. 8/11/13 11:58pm Droll:

Thanks Dave. Before you can say the legal ID three times, you'll be back again!
Avatar    Sun. 8/11/13 11:58pm Dave Mandl:

Two times!
  Sun. 8/11/13 11:58pm trish:

Thanks Dave.
And thanks all for the interesting timing of music read.
