Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:29am fleep:

It's 7:30 here, coffee, black, and keep it coming.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:32am northguineahills:

It's never too early, Ike.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:33am braveness23:

I used to try out everything that the microbewerys threw at me. I have reverted back to enjoying classic beer styles. I really don't need to know just how badly I can burn my esophagus with hops or how bad a sugar rush I can get from candy beers.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:34am Ike:

My boss has left Blue Moon, Brooklyn Lager, blonde Jeffe, and Stella in the office fridge. But my taste buds are so uncooperative that I won't even steal my boss's beer while he's away. Sad. If I liked it, I'd be knocking back one of those. Or 6.

Wow, never heard this ZZ Top spanish version. Was this a single?
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:38am Joe McG:

@blee: Yes, it's the B-side of the English version, which as we all know was a #1 hit.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:39am fleep:

Muy caliente.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:39am Cheri Pi:

last night I sampled Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar, Mt. Carmel Stout, Founder's All Day IPA, and a smidge of Shipyard Pumpkinhead ale.

Awesome, thank you Joe!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:40am northguineahills:

I just got sick of the hoppy madness, especially IPAs. But I still like most other artisan beers.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:40am efd:

Maybe also "Red Hot" by Robert Gordon? There are a lot more Private Stock 45s that _no one_ needs, that's for sure (*cough*David Soul*cough*). Yet I've found myself buying singles just because they were on that label.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:40am fred:

Good morning Joe and others

@efd: Oh, yeah, Mud is also on PS after they left RAK! I like Mud.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:41am braveness23:

I'd never thought of the Italians as beer makers but I've become a sucker for a cold Peroni, especially on draft. I've been excited because our local craft beer shop has started carrying Peroni. Unfortunately it comes on green bottles and is very sensitive to mishandling so the six pack we got the other night was kind of nasty. I blame the distributor who probably thinks Peroni is like expensive Budweiser.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:41am northguineahills:

I just had the dogfish head ancient egyptian brew Saturday. Tasty! www.dogfish.com...

Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:43am Joe McG:

Yes, sorry, two Popcorns in two weeks is probably too much popcorn, but I love the lyrics on this and the name of the band is fantastic. Check Youtube for silly video.

The grocery store by my house has New Holland seasonal bombers on sale for $4.99. These will be my tipplers for a few weeks.

A couple weeks ago, I had the Rogue Beard Beer, a light Belgian Golden made with the wild yeast found in the brewmasters beard. The beer was light and tasty!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:50am braveness23:

I will try Moretti! Funny all the times I went to Italy I don't remember having any Italian beers as choices. They were into Spaten and it was often the only choice.

mmmmm...beard beer.

i was in what i think is an unnamed Irish bar on 11th in the East Village. Had a great live seisiun and an intense selection of beer. Some had very high alcohol content and were extremely expensive. and they had diet coke.

I have the same thought I did back then. Wish someone was singing this besides Paddy.

Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:56am Cecile:

Eat Street in Mpls has added some cool stuff since we were there last. Excellent cocktail bar next to our favorite Viet resto.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:57am Joe McG:

@duke: If you like 80s, have I got the set for you coming up.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:57am Cecile:

They even make small, potent drinks in between a shot and a full cocktail. Good modern mixology w/o being all precious about it.

yay! I <3 80's!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:58am Cecile:

@KP - was that unnamed pub on 11th Street between Avenue A & B? If so, I used to live on that block and watched that pub being constructed. I was so happy to have it there on my block and spent many nights stumbling home. Great place but no name!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 10:59am Cecile:

And it's called Icehouse, after the studio that made all these punk records in the 80s that used to be there.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:00am Dave E:

Quite a nice variety so far, Joe
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:00am duke:

I'm listening in the eye doctors office, waiting for my wife. I'll definitely catch it in the archives.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:00am KP:

Place is pretty close to unnamed. It is the 11th Street Bar. Music on Sunday nights. i used to see an irish banjo player on train and asked him where had been playing. Thst was it. i live near there now.

Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:01am KP:

There's a Guinness sign but that's it.

Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:02am Cecile:

He also had a hit with a version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:04am northguineahills:

Ok, let's all leave work and meet and a good pub.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:05am duke:

@ Dave E I have been spending time driving my wife around to the eye doctor's. It's nice that they have free wifi so I can listen.

Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:11am tim from champaign:

OK, so has anyone else been sucked into the Orange is the New Black TV show?

Feck! Arse! Drink!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:12am Joe McG:

@Cecile: That's right, I forgot! Also produced by the Tokens.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:14am duke:

@tim I watched the first episode, but couldn't get into it. Does it get better?
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:14am Dave E:

@ngh Belch!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:15am KP:

Now why was i looking at pictures of Nena yesterday? Oh, now I remember.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:15am northguineahills:

Wow, Nena did other songs!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:17am tim from champaign:

@duke, yeah it does. It took me about 2 episodes to get into it. The story gets more interesting with the character development of the other inmates.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:17am Cecile:

Helen Schneider! She was going to be the next big pop-rock thing in the late 70s.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:18am Cecile:

no, Tim, I'm watching Longmire. it's easy to follow.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:19am Dave E:

Her musical career began in the summer of 1979 when guitarist Rainer Kitzmann offered her a position as the lead singer in his band, The Stripes. The group had a minor hit with the song "Ecstasy", but never achieved mainstream success, and soon disbanded.

In 1981, Nena and her then-boyfriend Rolf Brendel moved to West Berlin, where they met future band members, guitarist Carlo Karges, keyboard player Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen, and bass player Jürgen Dehmel. Together they formed the band "Nena". In 1982 "Nena" released their first single, "Nur Geträumt" (German for "Only Dreamt"), which became an instant hit in Germany after the band appeared on the German television show Musikladen. The single reportedly sold 40,000 copies the day after the song appeared on the show and reached number two in the German charts.[2]

Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:21am tim from champaign:

Longmire looks interesting. The Wire is great. Oh, indeed.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:22am KP:

Hi, Joe! Just tuning in....love the last few tracks.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:23am northguineahills:

wow, Kim Wilde did other songs as well.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:24am Mike Noble:

Has anyone ever done a DJ premium of number songs?
  Thu. 8/8/13 11:24am 12539:

Not a bad title.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:24am Brian in UK:

@KP when are you heading back?
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:25am Joe McG:

@MIke: Yes, Charlie did one called "Count Me In" a few years ago, and I believe Mary Wing did one a couple of years ago.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:25am Mike Noble:

How about a premium of spelling songs?
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:25am KP:

i got into Breaking Bad when it sort of erupted last year. was watching on train, at work, everywhere to catch up to end of the season. Netflix's wireless setup is addicting.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:26am KP:

Monday.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:26am Brian in UK:

The Borderline is a good little gig. Word is Townes played his last live date there.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:26am Joe McG:

@Mike: Oh, THAT was actually the Mary premium: "Spell It Out." Sorry, Mary.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:27am Mike Noble:

what comes after counting and spelling? listing? i'm surprised there isn't a genre of listicle songs yet.

Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:30am efd:

Yay Racey! (Speaking of RAK artists)
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:30am northguineahills:

Someone should do a dj premium of good other songs by "one hit wonders".
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:31am Brian in UK:

@KP that is a flying visit.

@Joe have you got the flip side of Mickey, Hangin' Around.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:32am efd:

NGH, I had the same thought recently! Not sure I'll do it, but I do like the concept. I can think of several FMU DJs who'd do a great job with that theme, including the one on the air right now.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:32am herb.nyc:

wow, this be some excellent music to listen to while i'm working on spread(zzz)sheets. thanks!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:32am Cecile:

this could be in a set of "songs by male artists that women made better". Ricky, and also Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun."
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:33am KP:

Yes, Mrs KingPenguinRock did not want to take off more days from work than necessary to appease me on this.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:33am Cecile:

Aretha's Respect.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:33am Joe McG:

@Brian: Alas, I do not! I do need to get the single, though, since I want to get rid of the LP. @efd: Thanks, efd, wouldn't mind giving that a try!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:33am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Also a very good premium idea!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:35am glenn:

kim wilde's mom was one of the vernon's girls.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:36am Cecile:

Joan Jett's I love Rock 'n' Roll.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:36am Joe McG:

@glenn: Really? How interesting!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:36am Vinyl Retentive:

@Joe, you just strung together a series of words which don't make sense to me. "I want to get rid of the LP"? That sequence doesn't even parse properly in English, does it?
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:38am Brian in UK:

You have 'By the Time I Get to Pheonix' we have Marty Wilde's 'Abergavenney'

@VR are you Doug Schulkind in disguise,
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:38am tim from champaign:

Man, what a great set, Joe. It's hard to go up from the Soda Fraise song but you did it!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:38am Joe McG:

@Vinyl: Ha ha!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:40am Joe McG:

@tim: Yeah, I'm just about 80s-out. The last 20 minutes might be a calming drone.

what BrianUK said.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:42am Brian in UK:

@KP have a safe trip, shame it is not longer. (the trip)
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:42am Ike:

Cecile, I want to like Longmire because K. Sackhoff is in it, but it seems like just another procedural crime drama and last time I watched they weren't giving her character enough to do. I like TV that's a little more ambitious. Heck, Adventure Time is supposedly for kids and it's about 1000 times more ambitious than Longmire. But I understand the appeal of the gorgeous New Mexico landscapes (standing in for Wyoming).
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:44am Brian in UK:

Is 'Breaking Bad' any good?
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:44am northguineahills:

Now that I'm finally employed, can I up my pledge I get more swag?
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:44am Cecile:

I like it because it is a good old standard police procedure. The acting is understated. There is no gratuitous gore.It is like drinking a glass of nice cold water.

I haven't been able to watch an Adventure Time all the way through.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:44am glenn:

breaking bad is the shit.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:45am northguineahills:

Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:46am Cecile:

actually Helen Schneider is from Brooklyn. She was a star in Germany.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:46am KP:

Breaking Bad is awesome. i was put off by it at first but soon saw the light, or the dark.

Brother Jack McDuff is from Champaign. There's a street named after him here. There's also an old timer I'll see around downtown who was McDuff's driver in the 60s. He's got some good stories.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:49am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Thanks, Cecile! I assumed she was German. Brooklyn, ha!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:49am Lewis:

I am with Cecile wrt Longmire - looking forward to more...
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:49am fleep:

It's an organ-ic finish to the show.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:50am KP:

Thanks Brian. we have been there a few times before. i think i told you my wife grew up in London area as army brat and loves it. She is also looking forward to seeing Jordi Bell from Stay, again. He was here in NYC with Sky Picnic, another Fruits de Mer band.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:50am Joe McG:

@fleep: :)
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:51am KP:

Actually like this jazz organ! mght have to give amazon another ringy-dingy.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:52am Ike:

Cecile, do you like Person of Interest? That one strikes a nice balance between standard crime drama and something much more ambitious with a creepy surveillance state theme and a possibly sentient supercomputer watching everyone. I like how they snuck it onto CBS disguising it as a regular crime show. Ha!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:54am Cecile:

I want to start watching that.
Right now my drammers are re-runs of Law and Order: CI, Longmire and Flashpoint. I am not adventurous these days.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:55am northguineahills:

Man, this set has been burning and snot churnin'. Thanks Joe!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:56am Ike:

Woah, Cecile, rocking it old school there with the TV equivalent of Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, and the Eagles... LOL, not that there's anything wrong w/that.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:56am KP:

Thanks, Joe! Always great to see you here.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:57am Brian in UK:

Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:57am Cecile:

Oh, and Veronica Mars.
Yeah, kinda of ole school there. I love to see Vince D'Onfrio chewing the scenery.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:57am Cecile:

oh, joe, you're not schizo, just a little bi-polar.
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:58am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Ha!
Avatar Thu. 8/8/13 11:58am Ike:

V. Mars, now we're talkin'! Oh yeah, D'Onofrio is always great.

Thanks, Joe.
