Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 11:49am Jeff Golick:

No love for The Rowboats, alas. Hey, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 11:53am Tony Coulter:

Hey Jeff! The Rowboats thing doesn't even have a cover -- it's just track titles typed on a sticker ... so not photo-worthy.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:01pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, everyone! Still no working cassette deck over here, so it's more CD-R crackle again today.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:02pm listener james from westwood:

good tuesday all! in just in time for the hiss! i think every car in the county got in my way while i was coming back from the bank!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, LJ from W!
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:04pm Gary:

Howdy, Tony!
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:04pm listener james from westwood:

because nothing sez love from your bank like a cd interest rate that can't even match record-low inflation. oy flippin' veh.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:05pm Rich in Washington:

A good analog for Tape Hiss (no pun intended) would be CD-R Glitch
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:06pm Kay:

Perhaps you can "warm" it up with Audacity. Nice photo backdrop by the way.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:06pm Rich in Washington:

I'm waiting for the nostalgic resurgence of the CD-R revolution.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Gary, Kay, & Rich! Glad you like the tiki table-mat backdrop, Kay!
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:09pm listener james from westwood:

i'll stake more on the cd-rs than i will on the bank cds!
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:11pm Gary:

Reading this now to get up to speed on la musica: livingarchive.doncampau.com... ...
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:14pm Tony Coulter:

Don Campau's tape archive project is a great thing
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

This track is a cover of a song by the Sunrays
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:16pm Jeff Golick:

Appreciate that link, Gary, but a part of me wants this music to exist solely as an audio experience, lacking context beyond that which Tony's show provides.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:20pm Tony Coulter:

Don't worry, Jeff: none of this stuff really exists.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:21pm Jeff Golick:

Phewf.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:26pm Doug Schulkind:

Greetings Reverend Coulter!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:26pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Doug-ster!
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:28pm Rich in Washington:

OMG! I remember this radio show that they use here (Ronald Reagan)!
It scared the crap out of me when it came out.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:31pm Rich in Washington:

It was a scary radio show purporting that Reagan actually believed in Armageddon and would endeavor to bring it about.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:31pm DCE:

fresh off of lunch break, brand new ears on, good buddies
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:31pm northguineahills:

Loving Walls of Genius! Gotta jet for lunch, will catch y'all in a bit.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:31pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, DCE!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:32pm Tony Coulter:

See ya, NGH!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:34pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: never hoid that show -- but I remember its ilk, like the 700 Club ... is that thing still on?
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:34pm Jeff Golick:

Mmmm...lunch.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:37pm DCE:

whoa ho, he speaketh the truth
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:39pm Doug Schulkind:

@Rich in Washington
WBAI in New York aired a radio documentary that exposed Reagan's relationship with fundamental Christians and their end-times infatuation. It was scary as hell.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:41pm BEN'S VERTIGO:

Hi there Tony,
just passing and heard some semi dark prog playing!
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:41pm Rich in Washington:

YES!
THat's the one, Doug!
I am actually looking for it.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:42pm Rich in Washington:

I had the show title and name of producer years ago but have misplaced it.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:43pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Ben's Vertigo!
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:43pm Rich in Washington:

It was broadcast (I am assuming on some programmer's show) on KBOO sometime in the mid 80s
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:44pm BEN'S VERTIGO:

what, was our Ronnie one of them bible bashers?
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:46pm Uncle Michael:

Greetings, greetings, greetings.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:46pm Tony Coulter:

@ Ben's Vertigo: The bible, plus astrology, of course -- via Nancy.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:47pm Tony Coulter:

@ Uncle Michael: Gratings, gratings, gratings!
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:48pm Uncle Michael:

Been listening in me motor as I tooled around town...tool that I am.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:49pm BEN'S VERTIGO:

oh TC - you don't mean to say the the first lady was consulting with star gazers are you - no wonder Big Ron got caught supplying weapons to Nicaragua - it was forecast in the stars!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:50pm Tony Coulter:

After this Walls of Genius thing, we will spend the rest of the show in the 21st century.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:51pm Tony Coulter:

@ Ben's Vertigo: absolutely, yes. Her astrologer was very influential.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:51pm BEN'S VERTIGO:

It's a Scary World Out There - 1984 - say no more!
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:52pm Uncle Michael:

Have you heard? It's in the stars. Next July we collide with Mars.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 12:58pm Tony Coulter:

I was in touch with the Sweet Pups at one point, but I've lost the emails and can't remember what (little) they told me about themselves.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 12:59pm listener james from westwood:

fun stuff so far, tony! onward to the 21st cen-tury! (huh, that was fast.)
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:01pm Tony Coulter:

I'm-uh 21st-century quaker.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

... just an oblique Captain Beefheart reference there, btw.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

"The singer needs a glass of water."
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 1:13pm listener james from westwood:

hey, no dissin' our rats, lady!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:16pm Tony Coulter:

There's no finer rat than a New Jersey junkyard rat.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:19pm Tony Coulter:

The track on now ("I'm with You") is a cover of an Arthur Lee/Love song.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

In case it's sounding familiar, I've played this particular track ("You Lose Dirt") on my show many times over the years.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 1:30pm DCE:

digging that nice slide guitar
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:31pm BEN'S VERTIGO:

talking about Arthur Lee/Love do you rate (like) any of his post Forever Changes albums?
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:33pm BEN'S VERTIGO:

like this Syd Barrett/Kinks like songs via cheeky cockney stuff like Chas and Dave un Ian Dury!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:33pm Tony Coulter:

@ Ben's Vertigo: Not too much, actually, no. I have little love for later Love.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:34pm BEN'S VERTIGO:

he seemed to lose the production quality of his first 3 albums? Did he (Arthur Lee) put it all up his nose?
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:35pm Tony Coulter:

... but it's all relative, I suppose.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:40pm Tony Coulter:

The absence of Bryan MacLean is a big part of the problem with later Love, methinks....
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

I do think the best Love has a fine balance between Bryan and Arthur.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:42pm Tony Coulter:

"Bubbles in My Beer" (on now) is a Bob Wills tune.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 1:46pm listener james from westwood:

i think the musicians' dog was in the studio at the end of that last cut!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:48pm BEN'S VERTIGO:

yeh - I think there are good tracks on the later albums but the problem is that there are too many average ones, and the records seemed rough and lacking the polished productions of the earlier albums - did Elektra just drop them after FC?
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:51pm Tony Coulter:

RE dogs: What was that Pink Floyd movie featuring them with guest dog vocalist? "Live at Pompeii"? That scene made a big impression on me ages ago....
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:53pm Tony Coulter:

Song on now is a Hank Williams cover
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 1:57pm Tony Coulter:

By the by, I wouldn't know who did these country songs originally if not for my friend the internet. Most definitely not my area of expertise.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 1:59pm listener james from westwood:

the cool thing is, now folks can come across this playlist and comment board when they themselves search. kind of a pay it forward for future searches.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:04pm Tony Coulter:

"Just One More" (on now) is a George Jones cover.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 2:04pm DCE:

nice and mournful!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:06pm Tony Coulter:

Glad you likes it, DCE! Lots of songs about drinking, that's for sure.
  Tue. 8/6/13 2:12pm Jim Pastor:

Dauntless is a beauty
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Jim!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

"Walk Through This World with Me" is another George Jones cover.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:19pm Tony Coulter:

As mentioned above, I didn't include a picture of this Rowboats thing because it doesn't have a cover, just typed-out track titles.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 2:24pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

holy crap i'm late.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:25pm Tony Coulter:

This is as poppy as I'm ever going to get, so enjoy it while it lasts.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:26pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Turnip!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:31pm northguineahills:

Weird how the Rowboats sound 90s, but are from a decade later....
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:32pm northguineahills:

Where are they from? (been here since 1:40, but have been busy)
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:34pm Tony Coulter:

They're from Brooklyn. They're a Krakatoa side-project.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:35pm Tony Coulter:

This thing never came out.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:36pm northguineahills:

Got a good sweat going-on from lunch #2 w/ my curry pie I made w/ my home grown jalapenos and additional hot sauce. Hope my coworkers don't think I'm sick, or freaking out.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 2:37pm listener james from westwood:

can't beat homegrown, or home baked!
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 2:39pm Gary:

@northguineahills: soundaslanguage.wordpress.com...
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:40pm northguineahills:

Yeah, had a curry pie party, 3 12" curry pies w/ different ingredients. Took a good five hours from start to finish, made cocktails in the meantime w/ friends, and the end result was quite tasty. My first attempt.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:40pm northguineahills:

Thanks, Gary!
  Tue. 8/6/13 2:44pm Jim Pastor:

shades of Beck
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 2:44pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

vocals reminding me rather closely of The Kingsbury Manx, actually
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:44pm northguineahills:

The voice, yes...
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:45pm Tony Coulter:

... and there's a bit of Stereolab in there too.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:46pm northguineahills:

A shame, as being a brooklynite the last baker's dozen years, I never caught or ran into these guys. Especially in that time period I was going to shows of all stripes every week.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:48pm northguineahills:

yeah, I hear the 'Lab w/in.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:49pm northguineahills:

High Llamas as well....
  Tue. 8/6/13 2:50pm Jim Pastor:

Curious why this wasn't released. Easy enough these days to distribute through iTunes or Amazon.
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:52pm northguineahills:

Yeah, this should be dumped on bandcamp or the FMA.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 2:52pm maestroso:

Just tuned in, thought I was hearing Stereolab too...nice tunes
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:53pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Maestroso!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:56pm Tony Coulter:

Don't know why they decided to bury it -- particularly after sending out promos. It is odd.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 2:58pm listener james from westwood:

seconded on FMA; did they provide contact info?
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 2:58pm northguineahills:

Yeah, it's one of the best pop albums I've heard in the last 3/4s decade.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 2:59pm listener james from westwood:

super-sweet three hours, tony! many thanks!
  Tue. 8/6/13 2:59pm Mary Wing:

This was a great set, Tony, thanks!
Avatar Tue. 8/6/13 3:00pm Tony Coulter:

I do have an email address, I think.
Avatar    Tue. 8/6/13 3:00pm Gary:

Thanks for the thrills, Tony
