My parent's pet name for each other is bear (and my father was stationed in Japan when I was a lad), so, when my friends want to churn my chyme, they call me bear. Thankfully, I don't match the physical description of a bear.

Ok, this is weird, I've only been working for 6 weeks after 2 years of unemployment, and I just got an interview offer for Apple Maps on Monday. Where was this offer months ago!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
fred:

@NGH: not so weird, really: recruiters don't like to hire the unemployed, the way bankers prefer lending to the rich
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm
stefica:

@NGH, @fred: i've heard this, too, re unemployed. it is appalling! but congratulations!
Avatar 4:03pm
northguineahills:

Although, I got this current job via a recruiter, it just took 7 months of interviews, etc, before I started (after I fixed my email typo on my resume).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
fred:

@NGH: maybe the same recruiter wants to double-dip?
Avatar 4:07pm
northguineahills:

That would be funny, but Apple Maps themselves contacted me via LinkedIn, so maybe you're correct.
Avatar 4:07pm
steve:

NGH - would Apple Maps involve moving to CA?
Avatar 4:09pm
northguineahills:

I just got my first full paycheck yesterday. I liquidated everything except $4k in my 401 k, and I owe a few thousand to friends and my gf for rent and stuff. So, now, I can finally pay everyone back.

Actually, it's a NYC position. They're desperate to fix Apple Maps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
fred:

@NGH: some recruiters do put alerts on people who get a job: they let someone else go through the process of figuring whether you're worth hiring, then call you with an offer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
fred:

@steve: if so, maybe it would be better not to use Apple Maps to get there. Though that's not something you'd want to mention in an interview. Maybe it's a bigger-scale take on the interview puzzle: how would you make it to infinity loop using only our directions?
Avatar 4:13pm
northguineahills:

Thanks, stefica!
Avatar 4:13pm
steve:

interview question: Can you fix Apple Maps?
Avatar 4:16pm
northguineahills:

It's actually just ground proofing and GIS development work. I know the NYC metro area backwards and forwards as that's what I've done the last 13 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
fred:

@NGH: Wow, and they're only calling you now? That does it, they *did* lose a step
Avatar 4:20pm
Marshall Stacks:

@NGH:

Apple interview question: Can you tell me how to get to Carnegie Hall?
Avatar 4:27pm
northguineahills:

Well, if they practiced, they wouldn't need me, Marshall Stacks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
fred:

@NGH: I suspect you have been on their radar for longer, but they have a corporate policy against hiring someone unemployed. Because I've heard a couple of similar stories in the past year
Avatar 4:40pm
northguineahills:

First LinkIn contact came the second week of my new job, so you may be correct (and a few days after I changed my profile). I've been so busy w/ this new job and summer activities, that I didn't give a definitive response until last week.

Stephen Vitello and 16 others are taking over the 3rd floor of MOMA from Aug 10-Nov3rd for Soundings: A Contemporary Score. I believe it's MOMA's first foray into an all sound art exhibition. (I must be wrong, right?).

northguineahills:

Focus yodel, that's like some Japanese-Swiss superhero move?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm

A devastating one
Avatar 5:18pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

i went to a preview of the moma soundings exhibit the other day. really great stuff - and yeah, i think it is their first sound art show. it's mostly located in a 3rd floor gallery but some pieces are scattered around the museum in stairwells and such. vitiello's is in the garden. there's also a nice film program going with it. i saw a hilarious documentary about xentos fray bentos of the homosexuals and die trip computer die.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
fred:

So much great stuff... I'm rarely home on Friday nights (ends at midnight in my time zone), but this show has been great most of those times. I keep the volume real low because of the neighbors, maybe I should get headphones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
fred:

Kurt, way to make me a liar: sorry neighbors, this demands more loudness
  5:35pm
kookymunstar:

Don't worry you're doing just fine. I dig all this avant-garde/drone/doom whatever this stuff is. keep it reeling.
Avatar 5:36pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

fred, you need me to talk to your neighbors for you?
Avatar 5:36pm
northguineahills:

My neighbors and I have an agreement. Music is fine as long as it's over by midnight on weekdays, or 1am on weekends, and nothing before noon. If there's a special occasion on the weekends, just text the neighbor beforehand, and all is good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
fred:

@Kurt: I'll deal with the neighbors, you keep making it worth the aggravation.
