Live performance and chat with Speed the Plough

Naming themselves after an old Scottish folk tune, Speed the Plough played their first gig at Maxwell's in Hoboken in the early 1980's. They also played numerous times on WFMU, and once included WFMU host Frank O'Toole as a bandmate. As the club is closing down at the end of July, StP is rising up again with the release of a retrospective CD and a flurry of live performances. Speed the Plough are Toni Baumgartner: vocals, flute, bells, clarinet & sax; John Baumgartner: vocals, keyboards; Michael Baumgartner: lead guitar, backing vocals; Ed Sefer: electric & acoustic guitars, backing vocals; John Demeski: drums; Cindy Merklee: bass, backing vocals. (Guest guitarist on 1st tune: Mark Francia)

Björk's from Iceland. Iceland doesn't get too hot (aside from volcanoes). Need more ice-related music today.
Avatar    Mon. 7/15/13 12:24pm Brian in UK:

I heard they have hot prices.
Avatar    Mon. 7/15/13 12:31pm BDR:

So I just finished clicking through all 100 pages of Rolling Stones "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time", and I must say, they should have consulted you Irene :)

I was trying to tell someone about the Bongos but it was trying to tell a stranger about rock n roll.

Avatar    Mon. 7/15/13 1:09pm dc pat:

wow Van. I counted 2 women in that list. TWO. No PJ Harvey, no chick from Heart...
  Mon. 7/15/13 1:12pm j bird:

In regards to your comment about Tiny Lights, which other contemporary bands are using cello in their rock music?
Avatar Mon. 7/15/13 1:16pm Irene Trudel:

@j bird, Espers were one of those (Helena Espvall was in teh band). A co-worker friend (Gretta Cohn) was in a band called Cursive and she played cello. I'm blanking on others at the moment.
Avatar    Mon. 7/15/13 1:16pm Van in DC:

The women, yes: 89. Bonnie Raitt 75. Joni Mitchell
Avatar    Mon. 7/15/13 1:20pm Van in DC:

Interestingly, Nancy Wilson of Heart was one of the voters for that list...
Avatar    Mon. 7/15/13 1:26pm dc pat:

well she should have been included, don't really like Heart but... Poison Ivy should be on there!!!--how could I forget her?? Carrie Brownstein..I don't know if Marnie Stern has made a mark yet but clearly head and shoulders above most guit players..
Avatar    Mon. 7/15/13 1:28pm dc pat:

Viv Albertine...
  Mon. 7/15/13 1:40pm don:

The late April Lawton of Ramatan (which included Mitch Mitchell) and this was 1971.

I'll have to check out more of Wall Matthews, thanks Irene. He's just right up the road from me. Plus, his latest album - The Dreaming Light - well, if you omit "Light" you have the greatest album ever made :)
Avatar Mon. 7/15/13 2:37pm Irene Trudel:

@conrad, Dave has "quit" music many times before. I suspect it won't be permanent.
  Mon. 7/15/13 2:39pm don:
