Max Branigan  Miss You Lady Bug   Options   Max Branigan  2013  WAV  Upon hearing about the call for songs I hopped in the car and tried to record some big bug sounds in the south orange reservation, not that far from Jersey City. Sadly, all I could really find was an absence of noise, most of the lil guys are dead near me. So I recorded my attempts to hear them and subsequent failure to do so. During the process I was moved by all the cicadas squashed on the road, so I went back home and recorded this love song from one deceased cicada to another. I sing about pharaoh in it because I heard on some radio show that one species of cicada makes a distinctive "pharrrraooooh" sound.  1:02:35 ()
Francisco López  Cicada Cambodia   Options   Francisco López  2013  WAV    1:04:45 ()
Heather McIntosh and bugs  Taiwanese Bug Party with Bass   Options   Heather McIntosh  2013  WAV  I recently went to China and Taiwan with a band called Azure Ray and had the chance to ride around on scooters from Hualien through the Taroko National Park. Wow. Fun. I try to bring my trusty field recorder on most of my trips. These are some bug friends I recorded while we were on our adventure. These little guys were making such a racket, I knew I was going to want to do something with them. I decided to add a little bass to the bugs  1:06:50 ()

Henry Lowengard  Cicada's Truth   Options   Henry Lowengard  2013  WAV  I more of less forgot about your call for cicadas until I was surrounded by them this afternoon in Sojourner Truth Park in my hometown, Kingston NY. Since I'm big on spectral music, I took the sample I recorded and ran it through Spear, cleaned it out, and started pulling the top, broad band of noise down (at about 5200Hz+/-1750Hz) and leaving the lower band (1350Hz+/-350Hz) alone and then I stretched and thinned it out, and added a few hand drawn partials. Then I turned it into stereo and eq'ed the channels with different curves. A peek at the spectrum shows how I cleaned up the sound in Spear and pulled and slimmed the top band (which I have a hard time hearing, but I know it's there), and pulled out the bottom band. I was going to do something with the slow pulses of wideband high frequency noise, but maybe some other time.  1:27:28 ()

Avatar Fri. 6/21/13 3:05pm northguineahills:

Just spilled some naga jolokia sauce on my leg, in my attempt to prepare a snack of crackers and garlic herbal goat cheese and aforementioned sauce.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 3:07pm Cheri Pi:

NGH-I had NJ sauce in my eye at 10:40 am this morning in a similar potato chip incident.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 3:07pm Caryn:

Second day of my 4-day weekend. This'll do nicely as the soundtrack.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 3:08pm dc pad thai:

HECKIT! In a meeting and can't listen...BUT having beersies...
Avatar Fri. 6/21/13 3:09pm northguineahills:

Yeegods, Cheri Pi, that's gotta keep ya busy for a good half hour. My eyes have gained some tolerance to other chilies ( I don't wear gloves any more when cutting chilies), but naga jolokia sauce in the eye, one would prefer death!
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 3:12pm Cheri Pi:

My eye was already irritated from sunscreen so it only burnt like tabasco, not pleasant-but not unknown. 30 minutes was about right.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 3:13pm Cheri Pi:

beersies!

Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 3:29pm dc pad thai:

-30 minutes to beersies for me.
Avatar Fri. 6/21/13 3:30pm northguineahills:

@Rev Rabbit: No, it didn't burn, but it was perilously close to a mosquito bit, which would have been unpleasant.

Yeah, that Alex Orlov was tops!

Already beer o'clock for me. My last Friday of freedom!
Avatar Fri. 6/21/13 3:30pm βrian:

Wow, a very nice progression from what Bryce was playing.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 3:31pm Cheri Pi:

I'll tell you what though- if fruit flies could sing- I'd have an orchestra. Full bloom of the basterds in my kitchen due to a security breech in the screen. it has been repaired but the flies continue to live. trying the vingar trap as we speak. I hope to return home to FF massacre.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 3:32pm DCE:

Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 3:41pm Mike East:

Insects are important. Even mosquitos!
Avatar Fri. 6/21/13 5:33pm northguineahills:

well, I just got bit by a mosquito, the hell!

Since the restaurant closed downstairs, they left some buckets that have become breeding grounds for mosquitos. I need to enlist my neighbor to help me go down the fire escape so I can turn over the buckets, and lower the ladder so I can get back up.
Avatar Fri. 6/21/13 5:34pm northguineahills:

Never heard of this Colin L Orchestra, reminds me of Porter Ricks or Basic Channel.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 5:35pm Caryn:

Have 2 mosquito bites on the sole of my foot. Fine now, but itch like hell when I put shoes and socks on. Not as bad as the bite on my arm, though. A few days ago, that bite was big and covered in vesicles. Now it's crusted over. Ugh.
Avatar Fri. 6/21/13 5:38pm Mosquitoes:

Drill, baby, drill.
Avatar Fri. 6/21/13 5:41pm northguineahills:

Same here, I have one on my Achilles, and one on my heel. I usually don't swell, but these bites are very swollen (and I don't scratch). I usually don't get bitten in NYC, as mosquitoes find me less palatable then those around me.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 5:45pm Carmichael:

Yikes. Made it for the last 15. Hiya Koit, and howdy payday peeps.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 5:47pm Carmichael:

Speaking of beersies, had a wee bit of the 25th Anniversary IPA at the boozer. Feelin' it today, but some Hair of the Dog should right my ship.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 5:48pm Caryn:

@ngh: unfortunately, I'm one of those people mosquitoes seem to find delicious. Which is not a good combo with my mosquito allergy.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 5:49pm Kurt Gottschalk:

Here's a half hour piece for string quartet, electric guitar and insect chorus that isn't making it in today. Give it a listen! soundcloud.com...
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 5:50pm Caryn:

I watched the YT video for this, and all I could think of was "if I was letting cockroaches crawl all over me, I'd be damn sure to wear some underwear".
  Fri. 6/21/13 5:50pm Fredericks:

Are these the hissing cockroaches, Kurt?
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 5:52pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i believe so, fredericks.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 5:52pm Kurt Gottschalk:

here's the video: www.youtube.com...
  Fri. 6/21/13 5:53pm Fredericks:

I know these aren't cockroaches. I took too long to post. Toothpaste and/or ammonia for mosquito bites work for me.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 5:54pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i think they're also called 'madagascar beetles' could be a translation issue. or i could be wrong.
  Fri. 6/21/13 5:54pm Fredericks:

That's the one! Thanks, Kurt.
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 5:54pm Kurt Gottschalk:

here's another masaoka piece, this one with bees: www.youtube.com...
Avatar    Fri. 6/21/13 5:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

cheri!: fruit flies! hate hate hate 'em.
DCE: Ants don't like chalky or powdery stuff - they have to go around it - which likely doesn't help much...
- I gather (??) there are three main species of cicada - each w/ a different noise.
Avatar Fri. 6/21/13 5:58pm northguineahills:

Thanks Kurt! Have a great weekend Minotaurites!
