Speaking of larval parasitoids, I saw something outside my house this weekend I've never seen before - a hummingbird moth. Very odd.

Who invented the convention that the artist name on mashups is "A vs. B vs. C"?

It's not the first thing that would have occurred to me.

Just what we need.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:41pm G:

we're only fractionally fracasian
  Wed. 6/19/13 3:42pm Robert:

Let's come up with a new convention that doesn't imply rivalry. How about deciding which musicians provided the "floor" or "bed" of the mashup, and then saying that musician "hosts" the other one?
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Frack Baby Frack.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:43pm Droll:

rrg, Good point, the "samples" are complementary, not conflicting, and "A + B + C" makes more sense. "A+B+C vs. Guy-With-Laptop" would be an even more accurate description.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:44pm G:

Guy With Laptop is such a fucking prolific group any more. I just can't keep up with his discography.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:45pm rrg:

And I've heard enough recordings of "Track 01" to last me a lifetime, thank you very much.

RIP Slim Whitman, 1924-2013....was number one in England longer than Elvis and The Beatles.

It's so easy to post comments now (without HTML) that I wonder if I could even DO the arithmetic now that I've gotten out of practice.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:53pm rrg:

How does a vibraphone differ from a xylophone?
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:53pm G:

It was only ever adding the last digits, and copying the other two.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:54pm G:

It has a different vibe.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:54pm rrg:

I'll try to remember that if I ever have to do it again.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

: )
- it has electric fans that make the tone vibrate...
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:55pm rrg:

Gerry and the Pacemakers had a song called "La La La" also. But it didn't sound like this at all.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:55pm Mike East:

@rrg - a vibraphone has metal bars and a motor that spins creating a vibrato/tremelo effect. a xylophone has wood bars, and no motor. difference in rental price, about $25
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- no fair - he rents these things...
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:57pm Droll:

rrg, Vibes have rotating butterfly valves over the pipes. Marimba has wood tines that don't sustain much but xylophone has metal bars with enough sustain to make the butterfly valves do something useful to the tone.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:57pm rrg:

But a xylophone player could pick up and play the vibraphone no sweat, right?
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:58pm Droll:

...and $25/day... and plastic vs. rubber or yarn mallets.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:58pm Irwin:

R.I.P. Kim Thompson of Fantagraphics. Bye-bye, friend.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:58pm Caryn:

The metallophone is being viciously ignored in this conversation.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 3:59pm G:

fyi, no one's updated his wiki bio as of the moment to report his demise...
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:00pm rrg:

The what?
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:01pm Caryn:

Although, technically, a vibraphone is a type of metallophone.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:01pm rrg:

Wikipedia says that Kim Thompson was only 56.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:02pm rrg:

You don't need permission. Just air them. It's "public" radio. Isn't that how it works?
  Wed. 6/19/13 4:03pm Laura L:

Thank goodness a visitor just left, so just tuning in--oh, no, Kim Thompson RIP. Well, I'll stop typing now.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:06pm rrg:

It goes downhill from this?
  Wed. 6/19/13 4:12pm amEdeo:

I like this. Very sad about Kim Thompson though. But yay for Joe Frank.

I had to leave in the middle of this so I'll catch it later. Is it over yet?
  Wed. 6/19/13 4:29pm JP:

What was that background song just playin'? "I'm a 70 yr old xxxx" ?
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:30pm rrg:

Ah, yes, looks like. Estrogen Jihad on the playlist.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:30pm Droll:

rrg, Three more to go. I think I'm starting to get the feel for Mr. Frank. By the last one I'll probably ask to have the first two re-aired... Archives appointment, I guess.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:31pm Caryn:

This reminds me, the latest music debate over here is about Lana Del Rey apparently using recordings of cheering and singing audiences to boost the sound of the audience at her recent gig.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:33pm Alison Porchnik:

wow. she's great.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:34pm rrg:

I don't much mind if Lana del Rey does that, or if Lindsey Lohan steals something from Saks, or if Juliette Barnes steals a bottle of nail polish.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:35pm rrg:

Yes, a surprising voice for such a young person.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:35pm Droll:

Caryn, Lots of "live" albums have the equivalent of laugh-track. Frampton Comes Alive is notorious for sounding like it was recorded in a 30,000 seat arena even though it was closer to 6,000.
  Wed. 6/19/13 4:35pm JP:

what played briefly between Joe Frank and Estrogen Jihad?
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:35pm rrg:

But I DO care if I'm disturbed.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:37pm Irwin:

@JP: It was the outro of the JF ep. Don't know the artist, not ID'ed in the credits.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:38pm Caryn:

@Droll: see, for a live album I can kinda understand doing that (even if I'm a bit perturbed by it), but for average concerts? What's the point? It's not as if the audience doesn't go, "Hang on, there's nowhere near enough people here to make that much noise. Who the hell is doing that thunderous clapping in rhythm?"
  Wed. 6/19/13 4:39pm Laura L:

Thanks for the Joe Frank, Irwin--his particular disturbance is very welcome.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:40pm rrg:

Try that outro track in Shazam or SoundHound once the archive is up. Which, last week, happened in under an hour from episode completion.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- like The Seeds 'Live' album might've been fairly Live In Studio - but there was no Audience (said to be a fair representation of what had happened for them Live - & a good album anyhow)
...all kindsa stuff like that or worse...
- You mean she had bigger audience sound piped in to an actual concert as it happened?
  Wed. 6/19/13 4:41pm JP:

Thanks, Irwin & rrg! :)
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- some Bluesman - be interesting to know...
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:43pm Caryn:

@RRN63: yep, several audience members and a couple of critics there to review the concert then made it big news after they complained about the ridiculousness of it. Seriously, I see no point in doing that. It'll only end up turning people against you, as happened here.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...BobDylan had extra people booing piped in when he went electric : ) ...
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:46pm Droll:

Dubbed applause to punch-up a less-than-ecstatic audience is far less strange/gratuitous than adding a laugh-track to a studio-shot TV show which has no live audience.
I guess dubbing applause is less conspicuous than a big sign flashing APPLAUSE between songs like "live" TV shows use.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 4:49pm rrg:

You can be better than you are--you could be swinging on a star.
  Wed. 6/19/13 4:50pm Robert:

Fake audience noise is now being used at some baseball stadiums where the games are sparsely attended.

Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 5:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

allmusic.com :
The first of the EmArcy recordings of the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet, this album features trumpeter Brown, drummer Max Roach, tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Richie Powell and bassist George Morrow in fine form. High points include "Stompin' at the Savoy," "I Get a Kick out of You" and Brown's ballad feature on "Ghost of a Chance." Near-classic music from a legendary group. [Originally released in 1954, Brown and Roach, Inc. was reissued on CD in 2004.]
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 5:23pm rrg:

I like that the word "glamour" isn't one of those words that's spelled differently by Americans and by Brits and contrarians. Like armor/armour, favor/favour, and all those. We all spell it the same way. We all get along.

All right, a few people use "glamor" but it's not a US-vs-Brit thing.
  Wed. 6/19/13 5:24pm Robert:

rrg, listen midday Sat. to Michael Shelley and Rex and you'll hear an occasional "promo" like that, usu. for Todd.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 5:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...it was 'GlitterRock' when I was a kid - not 'Glam' that I recall...
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 5:28pm rrg:

Every time I hear the "o-r-g" in"wfmu.org" I think for a second that someone is speaking my nickname. Even after all this time.

It should really be "wfmu dot org" with "org" pronounced as in "organ", but I've made my peace with that. Apart from whining about it here. But I'm done now.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 5:29pm rrg:

I know soca when I hear it. And I'm hearing it now.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 5:30pm rrg:

SOCA is also the name/acronym of a Canadian music publisher. I think.

Irwin told me that once that he likes when people whine--let's have some more, rrg!
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 5:32pm rrg:

And why don't those cicadas SHUT THE HELL UP?
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 5:32pm Droll:

rrg, Strictly speaking it's not a "dot", dot is ·, it's a "period" or "stop", or even "point" as in "Ninety-one point one".
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 5:33pm rrg:

I know exactly where me brother is.
  Wed. 6/19/13 5:36pm jan:

@Irwin- you made sense of the NY Times review, alright. Chuckle and thanks. And today's show has been great entertainment!
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 5:38pm rrg:

Yes. But from the earliest days of domain names spoken aloud the verbal convention has been to say "dot" for that period. Just as, for the brief time that it mattered, people said "bang" when reciting UUCP-style mail addresses, like research!rob or allegra!smb. Or usl!rrg.
  Wed. 6/19/13 5:40pm Laura L:

I failed to look at the NYT today again (imagine!) but now I'll have to have a look at it, oh, that Kenny G.

I had to sing "Home on the Range" to a huge crowd in first grade. Because I sang it so well, apparently.

Why am I telling you this? I don't know. I felt provoked.
Avatar Wed. 6/19/13 5:51pm rrg:

Yes, you're right, those Baby Gramps tracks from that 1998 performance are in the FMA.

I second rrg. In fact they should double your salary. With a 20% tip.

Thanks for the music, Irwin!
