Hi, again. We're baaaaack!
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:01pm Charlie:

it's a licorice stick
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:02pm duke:

Black Twizzlers, yum.
Avatar Mon. 5/20/13 12:02pm Doug Schulkind:

Sounds waaay better than a Chapman Stick.
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:04pm duke:

gonna play some Fred Anderson? I hope.
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:06pm Jeff Golick:

Greetings, Charlie, duke, & Doug!
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:07pm Jeff Golick:

@duke: Looking for some Fred A.? Nothing queued up, but as this is live radio...that can change!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/20/13 12:08pm Uncle Michael:

Happy birthday to me...happy birthday to me...stick your copyright up your aaa-ass...happy birthday to meeeeee...
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:10pm duke:

I thought since Nessa recorded Fred, it might be a natural. I'm always up for listening to Fred Anderson.
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:12pm duke:

Your birthday too Uncle M.? Happy Birthday. You owe Time-Warner or someone $10 for that song.
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:12pm fred:

I saw The Sun Ra Repatriation Project two days ago. Pretty cool idea, my first instinct was to say "that's not wild enough", but it's actually pretty much out there
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:13pm Jeff Golick:

Howdy, UM! Happy day!?
Hello, fred! Not familiar with that Project. It's a band?
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:14pm Jeff Golick:

Btw, this Cymerman album is insanely loud.
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:19pm Jeff Golick:

@duke: that makes perfect sense. We only just heard a minute before the show started that it was Nessa's bday. Lemme see what we can do...
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:21pm fred:

@Jeff: It's an arts project: Kapwani Kiwanga interviewed musicians who played with Sun Ra and asked them to describe him physically, then had a French military cop make a composite portrait out of these (which looks nothing like Sun Ra at all) and beamed it towards Saturn through radio waves. Then she got recordings from radio-telescopes that were aimed at Saturn and scoured these transmissions for a reply from either Sun Ra or his relatives. This utterly fails to capture the thing, check it out if you can
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:23pm fred:

It was really more part funereal rite, part celebration of Sun Ra through oral storytelling, where truth is optional
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:24pm Jeff Golick:

@fred: ah, cool. Thanks for the description, does sound suitably out there. Where did you see/experience it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/20/13 12:25pm Uncle Michael:

Happy day!
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:25pm fred:

An exhibition at an arts space that's part of my fave venue near Paris: Instants Chavirés
Avatar Mon. 5/20/13 12:27pm DARK STAR MAN:

Eh have I gone truly mad or what? Hey man you were on last week were'nt you?
I thought D/O radio is once a fortnight?
Avatar Mon. 5/20/13 12:29pm Doug Schulkind:

That was back in the, ahem, dark ages. D:O Radio is now live EVERY week!
Avatar Mon. 5/20/13 12:30pm DARK STAR MAN:

thats great Doug,
now I can get 'out there' every week!
Truly spaced out man!
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:33pm fred:

There's an extract on her site: www.kapwanikiwanga.org...
But it's missing a lot of great parts, like the conflicting descriptions from musicians (who were probably not at their cognitive best when they played with him...)
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:33pm duke:

@fred It will be tremendous when they finally get a reply from Saturn
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:36pm fred:

@duke: with the quality of the portrait, they have a great excuse if they don't. But I think it would be a great fit for the A/V lounge in the next record fair
Avatar Mon. 5/20/13 12:37pm DARK STAR MAN:

Hey man,
in the oldern days in the 90s there was a great jazz record shop where I lived and frequented and bought loads of cool jazz discs.
However it shut in 2002 and since then I have lost touch with many of the records and artist I bought then.
In short do you what happened to:
Nicky Skopolitis
Steve Tibbetts (of YR fame)
what Coleman Hawkins did after the 'With Strings' album and if was as cool?
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:38pm fred:

Constellation, of course. This sound is unmistakable. Are there members of Godspeed/Silver Mount Zion in this project?
Avatar Mon. 5/20/13 12:41pm Dervish:

Maybe you can move to a daily show next. I'm sure the boss would sign off on it.
Avatar Mon. 5/20/13 12:43pm Doug Schulkind:

No, make it hourly.
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:51pm fred:

No! It's bad enough missing Irene's show as it is. I wouldn't have time left for the archives
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 12:53pm Jeff Golick:

@DARK STAR MAN: gonna have to look into that for ya. Nothing comes quickly to mind. Might be the meds talking, of course.
Avatar Mon. 5/20/13 12:57pm Doug Schulkind:

There was nothing that Coleman Hawkins did that wasn't cool.
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 1:08pm fred:

It's been a Sun Ra year for me: I saw Marshall Allen earlier this year (with Daevid Allen!?)
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 1:11pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 1:11pm Jeff Golick:

Name that guitarist...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/20/13 1:17pm Uncle Michael:

Jeff, are you trying to pass off a gray-scale Twizzler as licorice?
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 1:22pm fred:

Jeff, if you ever drop by Paris, you should check out that place (Instants Chavirés). It's closed in summer though. And don't wait too long, its survival remains questionable
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 1:24pm Jeff Golick:

@UM: nah, nah. Would never! Plus, I'm not that talented.
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 1:25pm Jeff Golick:

@fred: Thanks for the tip! My wife turns 50 in a couple years, and apparently we're all going to Paris to celebrate. So if it's around then, that's probably by next "drop by" opportunity.
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 1:25pm Jeff Golick:

Here's that NPR clarinet piece: www.npr.org...
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 1:33pm fred:

Jeff, another place to check out is "La Dynamo". I'm sure we'll have an opportunity to figure out what's going on by then, a couple of years is an eternity when venues are concerned, unfortunately
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 1:38pm Jeff Golick:

@fred: sounds like a plan!
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 1:45pm fred:

That's an amazing segue (for me): I spend a lot of time at Instants Chavirés, where Brötzmann played twice this year, and I work at a place founded by Boulez. This might be the first time I see them connected
Avatar Mon. 5/20/13 1:55pm Doug Schulkind:

Have to dash in a few minutes for a middle school semi-final soccer match. Pray that I don't come hurtling out of the stands to assault the ref.
Avatar Mon. 5/20/13 1:57pm Doug Schulkind:

OK, maybe after this gorgeous track...
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 1:57pm Jeff Golick:

@Doug: so the restraining order is still in effect?
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 1:58pm fred:

@Doug: I have that weird idea that the coach would be safer from your wrath than the school band conductor
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 1:59pm Jeff Golick:

@fred: re that seque -- they are course connected through you, too!
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 2:02pm fred:

@Jeff: Boulez would object to that. He's a really nice guy in his tough-as-nails way. Well worthy of respect. So I'll defer
Avatar Mon. 5/20/13 2:04pm Doug Schulkind:

My high school band teacher's name was Mr. Doberstein, but we all called him Doberman. He was a about 4'11" and would turn beet-red whilst screaming at the woodwinds or the brass (never the percussion section). When he would yell, a little blob of spittle would form on his upper lip and we would all wait with baited wonder to see which member of the flute section it would inevitably land on.
Avatar Mon. 5/20/13 2:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Ah...good times.
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 2:06pm fred:

@Doug: which section were you in? (I would assume percussion, but assuming isn't that wise)
Avatar Mon. 5/20/13 2:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Percussion it was. Way up in the back where we could get away with murder.
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 2:12pm fred:

I hope that isn't foreshadowing, for the ref's sake and yours
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 2:17pm Jeff Golick:

hot mess
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 2:21pm fred:

This Black Host track is amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/20/13 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

I prepared for this music by never going to the bathroom during "Space."
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 2:24pm Jeff Golick:

@fred: this whole album is astonishingly great.

@UM: well done, sir.
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 2:27pm fred:

This is turning into an expensive show. I hope they'll be touring
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 2:38pm fred:

This Jason Roebke isn't bad either... gotta eat my credit card or I'll end up broke
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 2:53pm Jeff Golick:

This Fred Anderson goes out to duke.
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 2:54pm Jeff Golick:

And @fred: I know the feeling....
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 2:58pm fred:

It's not a wise one, but it's a good one...
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 3:01pm duke:

Thanks Jeff!
Great show
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 5/20/13 3:02pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you Jeff!
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 3:02pm fred:

Thanks a lot Jeff, this was a great show!
Avatar    Mon. 5/20/13 3:05pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks to the hardcore playlisters today: duke, fred, and Uncle Michael!
