You see a blanket on the ground. It's your favorite color, smooth and soft. You can sit on it, or lie on it. It's a flying blanket, and you are the pilot. You are in control. You can fly anywhere you wish, just by thinking about it. You are the pilot.

Um, I am agnostic. I try to be agreeable. People believe in these things, and want to. I would like to see the scientific explanation behind it. When she sends me sound files as email attachments, I listen and if possible tell her, "I see what you mean!" I am nothing if not diplomatic. Maybe she's right! General Garbaldi is one of her biggies.
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 9:57pm G:

No, I hear Portuguese. She hears dead people. People who died in the park. People whose houses are museums now. Etc.

From Dylan's last great album. Almost 40 years since Blood on the Tracks was released. Hard to believe.
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:12pm Uncle Michael:

He might not have ever topped it but I don't think it was his last great album.
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:18pm fearfeasog:

oooh i like this.
  Mon. 4/15/13 10:19pm PB:

The Basement Tapes was officially released about 6 months after Blood on the Tracks (although recorded I believe in 67). Basement Tapes is far and away my favorite Dylan album of all time. Yes about half the songs on the Basement Tapes are by the Band but both Dylan and the Band do their absolute best work on it. Amazing, amazing record.
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:21pm Uncle Michael:

I think Desire is a great record. Infidels is pretty damned good too. Nothing ever came close to BOTT though. Many terrific songs after that but not many terrific albums.
Avatar Mon. 4/15/13 10:22pm Dan Bodah:

@fearfeasog, yeah, I thought you'd like Black Pus. It's one half of the Providence band Lightning Bolt -- a guy named Brian Chippendale. Lots of ties to Flywheel and other W Mass folks.
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:23pm G:

Mr. Zimmerman, I presume.
  Mon. 4/15/13 10:24pm PB:

Yes, Desire has some great moments (Isis, Sara Mozambique). But it also has Hurricane - ugh!
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:25pm G:

They played Hurricane every two hours on Brasilian radio when I lived there in 74-75
  Mon. 4/15/13 10:26pm PB:

Some of his worst lyrics ever.
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:27pm G:

The Brasilians couldn't tell :)
Avatar Mon. 4/15/13 10:28pm Dan Bodah:

I'm often glad I don't know the lyrics to foreign tunes...they'd probably be so much more banal than what I would imagine...
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:28pm cklequ:

Isis makes up for Hurricane on that record.
Avatar Mon. 4/15/13 10:29pm Dan Bodah:

It's like another life songs get to lead, connecting with people who hear the lyrics only for their musical qualities and devoid of reductive meanings.
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:30pm Uncle Michael:

I don't think Hurricane is really that bad. I just think it's just baldly literal and topical in a way that sticks out like a sore thumb in his oeuvre.

Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:35pm doca:

quilombos are the communities built by runaway slaves since colonial brazil. the biggest one was the one on palmares, maranhão (i guess), where it stood for decades before it was destroyed. there are still some, even in urban areas...and some great music comes from the quilombos, as i read on a newspaper article about a research on it.
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:36pm Uncle Michael:

Doesn't wfmu have an emergency tape for when Dylan goes?
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:37pm doca:

wfmu will play all albums, b-sides and bootlegs in sequence for a month.

There's an emergency Seven Second Delay show recorded for that moment i think...
  Mon. 4/15/13 10:37pm PB:

hasn't anybody in the fmu thought of playing feldman's second string quartet or some of the theatre of eternal music in its integrity? i would like to give a chance to a six-hour composition in some show.
     Mon. 4/15/13 10:40pm 12539:

in case of...

Avatar Mon. 4/15/13 10:43pm Dan Bodah:

@PB, I am actually kinda looking forward to that day, not cuz I'm mean or hate Dylan, but because I want to hear this: t.co... When that day comes, normal WFMU programming will be pre-empted to play this DAT. Perhaps our first (and last?) "breaking news" reaction.
Avatar Mon. 4/15/13 10:44pm Dan Bodah:

This is where the fire alarm used to be on the wall of the main air studio
Avatar Mon. 4/15/13 10:46pm Dan Bodah:

Ah yes, I'm so behind, I see others already posting about it. Yes, it's a 7SD show. I tremble to imagine how horrific it will be. Glorious and cringeworthy and embarassing and wonderful and hilarious in spite of it all, one shouldn't wonder.
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:47pm cklequ:

A fire alarm is pretty much useless when Bob Dylan dies. (Is the date on that tape 6/18/97? .... wishful thinking?)
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:47pm Uncle Michael:

Bob will outlive the stations last DAT deck. Mark my words.
Avatar Mon. 4/15/13 10:47pm Dan Bodah:

@doca, I love that idea. I've always thought one of the things about "freeform," and playing music other stations don't and won't play, is to play pieces longer than most formats will give space to.
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:48pm steve:

ohh my god the bob dylan death tape is the best thing ever.
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:49pm doca:

@Dan: yes, and I like the idea of a composition lasting the same as my work hours
Avatar Mon. 4/15/13 10:50pm Dan Bodah:

@cklequ, why yes, that *is* the date on the Bob Dylan death DAT!
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:50pm steve:

Bryce played an hour+ long Eliane Radigue piece a while back and the radio context just made it that much more massive. guess the 6 hour piece would need at least two consecutive djs to work together.
  Mon. 4/15/13 10:51pm PB:

I'm sure that have a fraction of the listeners you have DB but I very often play songs longer than 10 minutes and have played 25 to 40 minute versions of tracks like Sister Ray and The Diamond Sea. However, unlike you I have never played super long Jethro Tull tracks.
Avatar Mon. 4/15/13 10:51pm Dan Bodah:

@steve, yes, we'd probably need some major event to call for coordinating or preempting programming to do that, since our longest shows are 3 hrs.
Avatar Mon. 4/15/13 10:52pm Dan Bodah:

@PB, I've played a 45 min Sister Ray live from VU box before. A couple of times. I do not fear the 30+ track.
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:54pm Droll:

Damn! Missed DVA! I think SW played DVA earlier today. The only other DJ that plays Wax Trax!/Play It Again Sam is the other DJDB (Daniel Beret)

I was curious about the "fire alarm" link so I clicked it before back-reading and I laughed so hard now I can't scroll back and read what lead up to that.
Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:54pm steve:

Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 10:55pm Uncle Michael:

I haven't run around talking a lot about this but I'm joining the Give the Drummer Radio stream fairly soon and I too am looking forward to playing many longer tracks, which I haven't been comfortable playing for the audience I was broadcasting to in the past.

Avatar    Mon. 4/15/13 11:01pm Uncle Michael:

I don't think it's possible for a DJ to be too hip for the room on FMU/GTDR. This is a pretty fucking great audience. It's a little intimidating.

Hmm - Ghosts & White People both speak English - draw own conclusions...
- My favorite Dylan album : Bringing It All Back Home - which no one ever picks. Right on pivot of Acoustic~Electric (one side each) - altho' Blonde On Blonde resents my saying so - & Freewheelin' gestures awkwardly for attention here, earnest young thing it is...
- I'd say he's had about three Major Peaks - maybe more by now - mid-60's the highest. Everyone knows he's not the Only, or the most Consistent - but he's prolific like Miles Davis for ages - & simply the Greatest & Most Significant Songwriter, period.
Blood on Tracks is the Greatest Divorce~BreakUp album by anyone - but I only need that when I Need that.

@Sweet Cheri, you must be talking about Annette Funicello? I dunno, she was sweet. But also, I have lots of horrid associations from the days when the Disney Channel was all that was allowed in my home growing up and she was this super-square girl who seemed to want us to believe we shouldn't kiss or pet heavy on dates, but instead should wait til after marriage. Not really leaving much to Beaver, sadly.

Someone somewhere said Anette was conservative on social issues? Too bad - was getting all sentimental...
- Someone Commented somewhere - thot it was Ken's show but can't find it : It's Billie Holiday's birthday - she's in Heaven @ table w/ drink, Pulitzer, Annette & Thatcher walk in & she says, 'There goes the neighborhood...' - & that gets better more I think about it...
