Live performance by Lorraine Leckie and her Demons
Claiming to be born on a horse in Ontario, Lorraine began her rock'n'roll life as a makeup artist, marrying Steve Leckie of the Viletones along the way. Leckie became the Lower East Side folk noir troubadour playing venues such as Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall & Mercury Lounge, often joined by her gothic rock band the Demons. Her most recent album, "Rudely Interrupted," is a collaboration with writer Anthony Haden-Guest creepily veering between dark and deliciously menacing tunes. Lorraine Leckie and her Demons descended on WFMU's Love Room to play live.

Hi everyone! Irene, you're making my day with wild rose. Saw Nick and the Bad Seeds in SF last week and I'm still high on the show.

Mark:

Irene, the Waltzing Cat is NUTS! Perused your recommended albums--I couldn't love it more if I'd written it myself! I moved here from Ann Arbor last fall and my friends at WCBN recommended WFMU, and I've been loving you ever since...Happy Monday to all!

hello irene, cecile and all listeners. i've just finished watching that scott walker doc filmed by the time of the recording of the drift, great to find out the similarities between walker and edith piaf.
Avatar 12:20pm
Parq:

Rob t, if this is what I think it is, a track from "20th Century Blues", the whole album is exactly what you would expect from an album of Marianne Faithful singing Wiemar-era songs in a Paris nightclub. Exactly.
Avatar 12:20pm
Cecile:

doca, I respect his work, but I'm sure I would be giggling through the whole thing.

ITA, Parq, and it is amazing.
She does everyone from Brecht to Nilsson.

@cecile: giggling? i would be scared. but i was kidding about their resemblances actually.
Avatar 12:23pm
Cecile:

No, I mean apart from a handful of tracks, most of Scott Walker's work makes me kind of laugh. That deep serious voice and totally batshit crazy lyrics.
Avatar 12:24pm
Cecile:

but then again, the same could be said for Captain Beefheart.
Avatar 12:25pm
Parq:

Cile, I donwanna go overboard in saying that album is totally Marianne Faithful, but the first time I listened to the CD, it stopped halfway though to take a cigarette break.

quick question: is this typical Alasdair Roberts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Irene Trudel:

Yes, Alasdair is sort of in the Fairport/trad-folk vein and this is a typical sound for him. One of these days I'll have him back if I can coordinate the next time he's here.

Scott Walker = sonorous. Never understood why he did not revert back to Engel if the limelight was too bright.

Just been listening to Tom Brosseau in the car. He has a special voice like Jeff B & does not work the verse/chorus line like so many.

Andrew Waterloo:

@Brian, Scott Walker seems to have the best of both worlds. Lots of freedom to record, and very few interviews and live appearances to promote it.

So, I'm listening to the show but not able to pay attention to the comments / playlist...I took today off work to do my taxes at the last minute...this is exactly the FMU show I need to ease me through the pain!

@Andrew I agree he seems to be in a unique position; just thought he might have wanted to separate that popular persona from the seemingly esoteric one.

I know Don! Both are pretty amazing. I know Oscar from my WNYC work and have been to his house in L.I. He's a bit senile now but still doing Folksong Festival every week.

As for Dean Drummond, info has been a bit sketchy. It's reported that he's passed due to complications from Multiple Myeloma.
