Evening, everyone.

Hiya, Dave. Hello all.

Hey, working but listening -- definite personality in the soloing here...

Hi Dave mandl
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:10pm Dave Mandl:

Hiya, G and C.

love it
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:19pm Dave Mandl:

Welcome, U.S. And thanks.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:31pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:32pm Dave Mandl:

Hey, Unc.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:34pm Uncle Michael:

This singer sounds a bit like John Stewart.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:35pm Dave Mandl:

Which John Stewart?
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:36pm Uncle Michael:

Kingston Trio...author of Daydream Believer...later singer songwriter...had the hit "Gold"
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:37pm Dave Mandl:

Ah, right.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:38pm Uncle Michael:

I never tire of Lee Hazlewood.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:52pm Evan47:

maybe she thought you were cute
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:53pm G:

Radio Revenge segment :)
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:55pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:55pm Evan47:

lol i take back my previous comment... she might have just been a crazy person in sheeps clothing
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:55pm Richard from Venezuela:

Greetings Dave and all the listeners
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:55pm G:

"obvious whack job" -- I ride the 2 through Atlantic Avenue multiple times a week :) I would have never made eye contact with her, but I'm pretty cautious with train riders who do not act friendly :-)
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:56pm Evan47:

hey richard from venezuela
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:57pm ottovonbqe:

She could be a listener.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:57pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you for reminding me why I left urban living for lower lunatic population density.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:57pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Evan, Richard, Otto.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:58pm Dave Mandl:

I never ever engage with crazy people on the subway. I can spot trouble a mile away.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:59pm G:

crazy angry person whose entire life is creating meaningless drama. my ex wife's mom used to claim men were always following her. trust me, they WEREN'T.

she used to tell crazy stories about riding the subway, totally impossible stories about that the government had gotten Columbia to hire her to carry nuclear weapons on the subway for government tests etc etc etc

you ran into the doppelganger of my ex-mother-in-law
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:59pm Droll:

[quick kitchen-lurking break]

Anyway, I finally unbuttoned my shirt, and said,
"look, look, I'm in this band, you know, I'm in this band you know,
and we're makin' a recording, you know.
It's about New York City, it's about crime in the streets.
"The explanation was going nowhere, but,
Finally, they just kinda let me go, I don't know why.
So I walk around the corner,
and I'm like shakin' like a leaf,
and I thought, "This is a dangerous place"
Who should appear, but two policeman.
  Sun. 4/7/13 9:59pm earrie:

A form of objectification?
It doesn't sound like it had anything at all to do with you.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 9:59pm Uncle Michael:

You used to be able to do. Time to join me in Kansas.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:00pm Dave Mandl:

This was strange because she seemed completely normal. She was kind of smirking and rolling her eyes as if *I* was some subway nut. I'd done absolutely nothing.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:00pm G:

OMFG Droll, what a power of association!!!!
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:00pm Dave Mandl:

Droll: Adrian Belew!
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:01pm Uncle Michael:

Cool Adrian Belew story, bro.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:01pm Dave Mandl:

G: Congratulations on your divorce.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:04pm Uncle Michael:

I gotta hear Thela Hun Ginjeet...
  Sun. 4/7/13 10:04pm earrie:

Thinking, too -- asking a question is engaging -'what's your problem?'. Directives are better. "Please leave me alone."
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:04pm G:

Re divorce: We all have our weirdnesses and hard-to-live-with-nesses. I bear no grudges, and am still friends with my ex (dogsat for her for a week last month); ex-mom-in-law died in 2010. -- The issue with the divorce was not the mother in law, but not being loved. Not a tale for here and now. :)
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:04pm Richard from Venezuela:

I really like this album of a metal heavy jazz kind of thing. Available on Free Music Archive. Resistencia Chaco: goo.gl...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:06pm Dave Mandl:

@earrie: I wouldn't say anything to a subway nut. They can push me very far and I won't react. This was somehow different.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:09pm G:

She gotcha, man. She probably does something like that several times a week, and is very good at getting around even our long-ingrained NYC subway-riding strategies and methods. -- Even the acting-normal part: Think how much effort she must have to put into *that*. :-)
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:10pm G:

The 3 and 4 are weirder than the 2 and 5, all in all :)
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:12pm G:

There's often a pair of cops on the Atlantic Ave 2 platform. What odds you give she knew they'd be there and had it all planned? Yeah, I can't tell you for sure, but hey...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:12pm Dave Mandl:

It was convincing. I was checking myself in the window to see if there was anything wrong, like I had toothpaste on my nose or something. (I didn't.)
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:13pm Uncle Michael:

You don't sound that nuts to me, Dave....for what it's worth.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:14pm Dave Mandl:

Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:14pm G:

You wuz set up, dude. -- Doing that to people who look like they have it together is a major sense of power and control in her otherwise semi-pointless life :)
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:15pm Uncle Michael:

Kenzo has changed the handling of icons in the last two days. We're all perfectly square now.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:16pm G:

Square pegs in round holes.

Gotta call Cali. BBL...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:17pm Uncle Michael:

Call me crazy...but I preferred it the other way.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:19pm Dave Mandl:

Very perceptive. I didn't notice that.
  Sun. 4/7/13 10:20pm earrie:

Hope you shook/shake/shooka the shaken quickly, Dave.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:21pm Dave Mandl:

Yeah, thanks. Maybe I'm too nice. I was worried that I'd done something. But it's impossible.
Sun. 4/7/13 10:22pm Richard from Venezuela:

This piano piece sounds mesmerizing
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:24pm sean:

Nice sounds. Thanks Dave.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:25pm fearson:

this is so beautiful
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:25pm fearson:

like are we mermaids frolicking under the sea right now with its creatures
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:27pm Uncle Michael:

I can do my thing under water.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:28pm G:

H. R. Pufnstuf ≠ Sponge Bob Squarepants
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:30pm Uncle Michael:

I know but I'm pretty tight with P-Funk.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:31pm G:

I sit corrected :)
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:34pm Evan47:

Dungen is sweet...seen them play a few years ago in NYC... check them out if you are not aware of them,
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:35pm Evan47:

Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:37pm Dave Mandl:

@Evan: Never seen them, but I'm a fan. I hope they come to NYC again soon.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:37pm Dave Mandl:

Sean, Fearson: Thanks.
Sun. 4/7/13 10:41pm Richard from Venezuela:

Wire are masters.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Noticed the squaring-off of icons immeadiately - as most of mine are not square. Prob. inevitable - simpler for 'em. Tidy little metaphor!...I was self-conscious my Rabbit one was bigger than most anyway...
Another DJ played Lee Hazlewood 'It's an Actuality' this morning: Made me think of Tom Lerher...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:47pm Mutant:

My favorite are the Towner/Peacock duos.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Tom 'Lehrer'...not getting better @ spelling...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:50pm cklequ:

This squaring of the avatars has cut the top of my head off.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:50pm Dave Mandl:

I love those '70s ECM records. Lots of good Towner and Abercrombie stuff, together and separate.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:50pm cklequ:

...Makes me feel like a real "L 7"
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:50pm Carmichael:

Lee Hazlewood = Tom Lehrer ... oddly congruous.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...eh - squaring actually improves a few of my icons - while @ least one goes back to the image program for work...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:51pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

My grandmother used to cut our heads off in every photo. Blame her.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:52pm Uncle Michael:

WFMU and all of it's enforced conformity...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:52pm Uncle Michael:

Serial Grandma.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:52pm Mutant:

Yeah, I buy almost every ECM record I can find, unless there is too much Jan Garbarek on it.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:53pm G:

@cklequ: *that's* gotta hurt.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:53pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

(Has a non-square avatar; I might have to letterbox mine, fight the pan & scan...)
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...sounds like she'd've been usefull on the subway...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:53pm Dave Mandl:

Blame Instagram.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:55pm G:

I always blame Instagram, when I'm not blaming Facebook. I've dropped MySpace and LiveJournal from the "default blame list". No point any more :)
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

What - *Kenzo* doesn't know why we're Square - ?!
...It's thru Amazon or something - ??...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:55pm G:

Oh, and Twitter. Definitely still on the list...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:57pm G:

Mauuice Mandelbaum. Big intellectual historian in the mid 20th century. "almond tree"
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:59pm Carmichael:

I loved that century.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:59pm Droll:

The Lubomyr Melnyk was amazing -- I thought it was two pianists.

I didn't notice the change to icons. I'm so often confounded by the lack of WYSIWYG software I hardly notice. I blame defective bloatware. The two central fallacies of computing are:
1. Any problem with software can be remedied with more software
2. Testing is not way to inspect-in quality. Testing proves the presence of bugs, not their absence.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 10:59pm Uncle Michael:

Kenzo didn't say he didn't know. He knows. He's just in the same boat.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:00pm I X Key!:

Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:01pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Hmph on the bloatware
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:02pm Uncle Michael:

The only reason I can imagine for max height *and* width is if there might be a grid display of some sort. Otherwise, this design really only requires max height *or* width.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:04pm Carmichael:

My next band will be called Grid Display.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:05pm Uncle Michael:

What was your last band called?
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:05pm Carmichael:

Buckets of God.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:05pm cklequ:

I may be an 'L 7', but not so much that i can't reclaim my head.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:06pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

One day a month we can have vertical-only avatar day
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:07pm Uncle Michael:

I'm calling my band Head Reclamation.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Cheri Pi mentioned
- 'Mystery Spots'
- some Tourism thing - & I thot :
- *Great* band name - !!!
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:08pm Dave Mandl:

My photo was already square. Thanks, Instagram.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:08pm cklequ:

How about Vertical Head Reclamation?
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:09pm G:

Is Square Avatars a band name yet?
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...they're getting better, folx...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:10pm Droll:

Kenzo, Don't get me wrong, I very well understand the allure of the tools that let you whip together a solution to the Trifecta Pseudo-Problem in a few hours... But you can't live on candy alone, you get fat.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:10pm G:

Code wars :)
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:10pm Uncle Michael:

Kenzo, if we letterbox, are transparent .png files supported so the background will fill the void?
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:12pm G:

Listeners, this is the audience-favorite "Stump the Developer" segment of your comments program
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Marc Bolan speaks for the 2%...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:13pm Uncle Michael:

Rev. You missed the CCR.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:13pm G:

T Rex + CCR = 2
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Mandl's a Headbanger. We can't be fooled.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:14pm Uncle Michael:

so we get 100? sweet!
  Sun. 4/7/13 11:14pm earrie:

What? Horizontal *and* vertical panoramas ?
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:14pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@UM: I was wondering the same thing. I haven't seen a single transparent image posted yet.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:15pm Dave Mandl:

@RR: That's actually true. At home I mostly listen to Deep Purple and Mountain.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:15pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Droll: Candy holds no allure for me.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...you can tell the transparent ones from their sunglasses & the bandages around their heads...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:16pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oh, you mean Joe Belock's avatar?
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:17pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Joe: wfmu.org...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:17pm Uncle Michael:

I know animated .gifs aren't supported.
     Sun. 4/7/13 11:17pm 12539:

Mine is transparent.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Precisely Kenzo.

...You see thru to the burger behind it...I'm confused...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:18pm Dave Mandl:

Is there something we can do about the people who call animated GIFs just "GIFs"?
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:19pm Uncle Michael:

We could put them in camps.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:19pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Do they say it like Jiff or Gift?
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:20pm cklequ:

Camps sound fun!
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh Dave - Ken is Station Manager. Tread carefully...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:23pm Uncle Michael:

I put up a squared png. Hasn't updated yet.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:23pm G:

"anigifs" sounds kinda anal
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:24pm Dave Mandl:

Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:24pm Uncle Michael:

transparency is a bust
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:25pm fleep:

This is eerie, it sounds like those recordings of number stations.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:25pm I X Key!:

Hif or Zhiff
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:25pm Dave Mandl:

We're always in favor of transparency here at FMU.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:26pm Uncle Michael:

Choosy mothers choose png.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:26pm Dave Mandl:

I worked for a company where you heard the word "transparency" like 20 times a day. Drove me crazy.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:26pm Dave Mandl:

Not in the graphic sense.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:27pm fleep:

My avatar isn't transparent, but it is wet.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...no no & no.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:27pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Nope, the resize doesn't preserve the transparency. On my list.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:27pm Uncle Michael:

I have hours and hours of numbers station recordings. I do not know why.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:27pm I X Key!:

! This show is so brilliant to listen to, thanks DM (o:
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:27pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Kenzo.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:28pm Dave Mandl:

@IXK: Thanks very much.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:28pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Ooh, numbers stations. On my list for my next show.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:29pm cklequ:

I have hours of numbers stations too.
If it helps at all, i did know why at some point.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:29pm Droll:

I could listen to hours of numbers stations, but even that's all computer-voices now and doesn't have the funk of Eastern European people reading them endlessly.
Still, it's worth listening to just for sort-wave multipath noise.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:30pm Dave Mandl:

I own a copy of the Conet Project set. Not something I listen to often, I must admit.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:30pm Dave Mandl:

i should try it.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:30pm Uncle Michael:

That's what I've got too, Dave.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Had to Google 'numbers stations'. No idea.
- &: Flat out Creepiest thing I've become aware of in a while...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:33pm Ike:

In the TV series The Americans, on FX, set in the 80s, the Soviet spies posing as Americans sometimes listen to numbers stations for orders.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:33pm Uncle Michael:

google conet project. it's all easily found for listening
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:34pm Dave Mandl:

RR: Strange phenomenon. It's pretty fascinating when you first read about it.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:34pm cklequ:

@ RR63 archive.org...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:35pm Uncle Michael:

I used to hear the tone and beep numbers stations when I'd be up at night DX'ing as a kid. Never heard any spoken ones.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

One Google result :
...'Like any good student of the internet, you know what numbers stations are. They'
re part of the unexplained oddity canon, the "mystery spots" on the vast trunk of' ...

- So okay - 'Mystery Spots' is *definitely* my bandname now...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:36pm fleep:

Or a disease to be named later.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:36pm G:

le hiphop
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:37pm Ike:

RRN63, the Conet Project box set of numbers stations recordings was a big WFMU hit in 1997-98. Seems like almost *every* DJ played some of it.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:37pm Dave Mandl:

Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:38pm Uncle Michael:

Well, at least now I'm master of my own crop.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:39pm fleep:

Cicadas on espresso.
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yes fleep - makes it 'Punk'. Brits call acne 'spots' - & it recalls AIDS - no laughing matter, of course - maybe we're a solemn band...
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:41pm G:

The Ghost of Marc Bolan thanks you
Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:43pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:43pm Dave Mandl:

Avatar Sun. 4/7/13 11:44pm Dave Mandl:

I would argue that Jack Casady's bass makes this not-rock-and-roll.
