Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 7:59am duke:

I hope to hear lots of filthy Jazz today.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:05am Doug Schulkind:

The filthier, the better! Morning Duke!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:12am duke:

You said it. The filthier, the better! The image today looks like FMU DJs running off with their filthy jazz records while the FCC fumes.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:15am Uncle Michael:

I like filthy...but I love greezy. Morning all.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:18am Uncle Michael:

The lid on that record player reminds me of a classic box and stick trap. I think those kids baited it with Bait-ovin.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:27am Doug Schulkind:

A classic Beethoven and switch!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:44am Parq:

Doug, I just noticed that your stream's icon on the WFMU-for-iPad app is a set of bongos. Rat own.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:46am Doug Schulkind:

Same as the stream's iPhone app icon. I studied many long minutes before picking that, Parq!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:53am Van in DC:

Is the stream down or is it just me? Good morning!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:54am Doug Schulkind:

THE STREAM IS BACK. I was stupidly futzing with something and made it cry. I promised it ice cream and now everything is back.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:54am Van in DC:

All better now...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:56am Doug Schulkind:

I am constantly cleaning up the ID tags on the MP3s in the stream's queue. Unfortunately, I tried to do this with THE TRACK THAT IS CURRENTLY PLAYING, and that is (apparently) a bad thing to do.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:56am ndbob:

morning Doug and everyone!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:57am Parq:

Ah, I assumed the problem was on my end. Maybe now people will take me seriously when I tell them the internet's out to get me.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:57am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning Nanookbob of the northlands.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:58am Brian in UK:

Hey diddle dee a listeners life for me.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:59am Brian in UK:

Herring bone sucks.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 8:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Welcome back. Had a good holiday, yes? Lincoln and Jessie had a bang-up time in London.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:02am Brian in UK:

Yes thanks Doug, we got out just as the wind driven snows arrived. It was fun driving home.
Glad your folks had a good time.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:02am Uncle Michael:

I had a problem on my end once.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

@B in UK
I was reading about the 10-foot snow drifts. Glad you weren't stuck in them.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:05am Brian in UK:

@UM Tell me all about it. You can trust me I'm a listener.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:08am Uncle Michael:

I try not to even think about it.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:08am Brian in UK:

Doug we stayed just by Kinder Scout where eighty years ago there was a mass trespass of the common man to walk the land.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

"Mass trespass" sounds so civilized.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:10am Brian in UK:

@UM try a warm bath & hot chocolate, works for me.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:11am Uncle Michael:

Ok, so I'm working on this theme show for next Wednesday. It's a not-in-the-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame theme. I've decided that it won't be based on who I think *should* be in a well-run hall...but rather, artists that a reasonably engaged music fan that doesn't pay significant attention to the Hall or its politics could reasonably be surprised to learn *aren't* in the Hall.

Does that make sense?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:12am Brian in UK:

I loves a bouzouki.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:12am Parq:

UM, did someone tell you it had to?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:12am Uncle Michael:

put a little tzatziki on bouzouki and I'm all over that shit.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:13am Brian in UK:

Why a hall. Let's go into the front room.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:13am Uncle Michael:

Parq, just the guy with horns on my left shoulder.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:14am Uncle Michael:

You'll always find me in the kitchen at parties.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:14am Brian in UK:

@UM probably someone like Ray Davies.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:14am Uncle Michael:

Ray's in with his band.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

I used to put a little tzatziki on my bouzouki, but my doctor said it's bad for my cholesterol.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:18am still b/p:

Slow computer makes me want to smash smash smash. now I missed all the opening numbers that were called for the Big Bouzouki Bingo Jackpot.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
What if you use this to listen:
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:21am Brian in UK:

These Thai tracks sounds as if on the edge of imminent collapse. Sheer willpower holding them together.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:22am ndbob:

that does make sense Michael
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:23am Nardo:

Hey Doug. Just read your BOTB post about Google Reader. You originally turned me on to using that and I was bummed when I heard the news a couple weeks ago too. I haven't had a chance to start looking for other options, but besides Feedly, Flipboard is also one to consider (according to Marketplace report I heard). Thanks for the insight on Feedly.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

So far my only disappointment with Feedly is that it's not Reader. Mostly a positive experience, so far. (I love that it can import all your saved items from Google.) I will poke around with Flipboard. Thanks!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:25am still b/p:

I do use the Flash sometimes, but usually the ridiculously groggy boggy start-up and the delay while anti-virus software does its check are what make the waiting so gnashy waily and long.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:27am Van in DC:

Does MediaFire not work any longer or is it just for the Phongsi Woranut album that it is broke?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

Mediafire in general still works, but as a company, it has gotten extremely skittish and is taking down links to anything that it thinks may be a copyright infringement or for which there has been a complaint.

Which page are you trying to get that Phongsi from?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:29am Uncle Michael:

@ndbob: Good. I was hoping it did.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:30am Uncle Michael:

Most reliable links these days seem to be file factory or deposit files.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:30am Brian in UK:

I see Rodriguez is playing Glastonbury.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:30am Van in DC:

@Doug from the old standby Monrak blog
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:31am Doug Schulkind:

Here is the Phongsi album I just played. And the Mediafire link WORKS!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:32am Van in DC:

Maybe the RAR file is being blocked by work firewall or something. It keeps timing out and tells me it needs to be repaired, then retry doesn't work. I'll have to try from home I reckon
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:37am Uncle Michael:

My tried and true method is to just have 300 blog tabs open in my browser.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:37am ndbob:

Ha Michael!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:38am thedunkel:

coffee + drummer + friday = AWESOME!
  Fri. 3/29/13 9:39am Hugo:

"Feed aggregator". Sounds indigestible ...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

Here is today's Mining the Audio Motherlode:

Feed aggregator sounds like something to do with cattle.

You are awesomer!

Sorry it's not working. If you still have trouble at home, email and I will have my trained gerbils send you the files via their pneumatic tube network.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:43am Van in DC:

Danke! :)
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:44am Uncle Michael:

Friday is fast becoming my favorite day...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:50am Van in DC:

Well, it IS Good Friday UM...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

How fast?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:51am ndbob:

great one here Doug!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:51am Uncle Michael:

It's hard to say...pretty fast...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:58am Van in DC:

The motherload mining is another thing I have to remember to do at home.

Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:58am Shaun:

Afternoon/morning all.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 9:59am Uncle Michael:

Hey Shaun of the scary avatar.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:01am Lewis:

a quiet morning here in the midwest - all the better for composing my next bit of science policy radicalism...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:03am Shaun:

@UncleMIchael Haha.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:04am still b/p:

I loved Ha Howa Ha Howa. Loved the set.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:04am Doug Schulkind:

Hi Shaun Hi Lewis!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

This Loy Clingman was produced by Lee Hazlewood!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:07am Brian in UK:

@UM with due respect. Scary avatar?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:08am Uncle Michael:

@Brian: I was in a very fragile state of mind when, as a child, I first saw "Sleuth," first run in the theater.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:08am ndbob:

wow Doug
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:09am dçþät:

Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:10am Doug Schulkind:

You're right on time! Now comes the "good" stuff.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

Read about Janet Greene, the "Anti-Joan Baez" here:
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:12am Brian in UK:

Belting name, Doug. Horden Raikes that is.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:12am Uncle Michael:

I thought *I* was the anti-Joan Baez.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:12am Lewis:

cool bit of trivia on the Loy Clingman - Lee was among my daughter's first musical loves. (In the third grade at PS84 she responded to a question about favorite musician with "junior Brown" (said proud papa)).
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:12am dçþät:

good, glad I missed all the crappy stuff...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:14am dçþät:

oh, yeah! Satie!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:15am ndbob:

@Doug I've heard the Janet Greene record - there are some pretty strange anti-protest records - some on the great Bear Family Cold War and Vietnam boxed sets
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:15am Uncle Michael:

If you don't all have the Atomic Platters sets, get 'em! I was right about the comet!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

PS 84, as in New Yawk?

Yes, I have all those Bear Familty "Atomic Platters" discs. Jawdroppers. Oops, just saw Uncle Michael comment.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:16am ndbob:
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:17am Lewis:

@ndbob - didn't know Great Bear did a VietNam box. I won the cold war one in the marathon some years back... Could dump a lot of money into Great Bear (and Sublime Freq (and Dust to digital))
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:18am dçþät:

my daughter use to like Sonny Boy Williamson "play some Sonny Boy, dad!" but now she likes Lily Allen....which isn't SO bad...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:18am Brian in UK:

Same time as Duchamps' 'Bride Stripped Bare by her Batchelors' Dada for now.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:18am ndbob:

@Lewis 14 CD set - and maybe another in the works
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:19am Lewis:

@dcpat - yeah I actually captured her lily allen as it was headed for the recycle (you know for those times you need so good pop music)
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:21am dçþät:

I tried to play her some Madness last night which sounds like an influence to me, but she wasn't having ANY of that...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:21am Uncle Michael:

Is this that National Lampoon "save the whales" bit?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:22am Van in DC:

So I leave for a bit for work, come back, and find that my Phongsi download finally went through! Yay!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:22am Uncle Michael:

I spun some almost-Madness on my show last night...the Jools Holland/Suggs song about Ian Dury...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:23am Lewis:

@dcpat - the flip is that she pulled OMC out of a bin at a record fair one year and I still listen to it and think of her every time: How Bizarre...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:23am Van in DC:

dcpat! Hey, I went to National Gallery of Art - East yesterday, and found out, you are right. Closing for 3 years of massive internal renovation, around the first of next year...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:24am Parq:

Pat, just let her do her thing. My daughter went through her Averill Lavigne phase and even her A Simple Plan phase, and I just patiently waited.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:24am dçþät:

hah! See? mrs. dçþät did exaggerate! she said 5 years. Well that's a little better.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:26am Parq:

Pat, if they're saying three years, you better pray it's *only* five.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:26am Van in DC:

Their wonderful 7-station cafeteria thingy in the tunnel between the buildings featured great falafel with many trimmings, much like Amsterdam Falafel. Was great!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:27am Lewis:

@Parq - agree, but it can be painful and booorrrinnnggg.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:27am dçþät:

@Parq, I know, I know. I approached it the wrong way at the start--wasn't ready for Lady Gaga, etc. "YOU WILL LISTEN TO THE KINKS AND THE FLAMING LIPS" but I've found you're right, you just have to cool it. The other day I heard her from the other room: "DAD, where's the Fugazi CD? the one with Waiting Room..."
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:29am Lewis:

Bollywood Time!!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:29am Parq:

I still remember riding in a car with my daughter on a Saturday afternoon. She had just gotten old enough to sit in the front seat. I had Terre T on the radio. She asked me whose show it was and I told her. She gazed at the radio thoughtfully for a few secs, and then sat forward and turned up the volume. *That's* my girl!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:30am Parq:

She's run with a comic book/gaming crowd for years now, and that informs her current listening. The stuff that Nick the Bard does is right up her alley.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:30am ndbob:

very foggy here with freezing fog - but all in all not so bad:)
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:31am dçþät:

Bollywood/bhangra gets instant star.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:31am Lewis:

@Parq - kudos to your daughter. Terre T has done some GREAT radio.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:32am ndbob:

I actually like a few Averill Lavigne songs
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:32am Brian in UK:

I confess I do not push any music. One daughter likes Stereophonics, the other the Rifles. The third can pick out Jim White at 100 paces. Go figure. We do sing along to the opening track of the Flamings Lips 'Death Hit'!!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

My daughter is full-on into the current pop music shite. I know better than to try to push her in any other direction. As is said, "If you Love them, let them listen to crappy music until they figure things out."
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:34am Lewis:

@Doug - well said - I was looking for those words earlier...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:35am dçþät:

well at least we're all in the same boat. The son right now is into the Undertones and Sham 69, so I have that... "WE'RE GOING DOWN THE PUB!"
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:36am Parq:

Some of it's just old fashioned rebellion, Doug. When you get right down to it, we of all parents have it coming.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:36am ndbob:

I rarely listen to current pop but when I do it's a mix - good music, bad music, most mediocre - nothing wrong with it - just that's it's a low priority for me
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:37am Doug Schulkind:

I listen to a lot of the current pop on the car radio (when driving with Miss Daughter). I am amazed at the number of top of the chart tracks that hardly use any real music instruments.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:37am Uncle Michael:

<- Uncle Pufnstuf has only nephews and a niece. On the upside...they named me.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:38am Brian in UK:

The crazy thing is I really dig the music of my parents' generation. Now I understand Frank Sinatra's 'In the Wee Small Hours' and where it comes from as one example.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:38am ndbob:

true Doug
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:38am dçþät:

@ndbob: I disagree there. I think it's total shite (to borrow Doug's word). It's music made for kids with adult themes. Awful all around. At least the local radio station is...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

Get this exquisite Thai Thanh here:
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:40am Hugo:

My eldest son went through that period, too. Now, he wants to disfgure those cds. His current tastes are in Bryce territory.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:40am Van in DC:

This day has become rife with wonderful bounty. Thanks Doug!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:40am Brian in UK:

The boys and girls wanting to form bands these days are less likely to be chart potential than previously.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:41am dçþät:

wow, way to go Hugo's son!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:41am ndbob:

@ Pat I figured I would get some disagreement there
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

I am operating under the assumption that my wise and thoughtful child will pull herself up into the light. And by light, I of course mean appreciating Bryce!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:42am Uncle Michael:

You know what gets on my wick? Grownups and serious music fans caring that breakfast cereal for tweens, like Beiber, is nutritionally without value. My Facebook newsfeed is full of people that think they're mavens for slamming disposable kid-pop. *yawn* So he's not the Beatles or Sinatra...and you're not Bob fucking Christgau for noticing.
  Fri. 3/29/13 10:44am trish:

The thing is, kids aren't arriving to Bieber-tastes independently.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:45am Uncle Michael:

Nor were they the Osmonds, Leif Garrett or Menudo.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:45am Brian in UK:

@UM people that call rap music (c)rap music. So bluddy funny.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

Anyone wanna try translating this song title for me? Google's version ain't cutting it.
  Fri. 3/29/13 10:46am trish:

It's a packaged good.
0-2 is a Nielsen demographic.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:46am ndbob:

@Michael - agree there - and i don't think Beiber is all that bad - though I vastly prefer Brill Building pop, in some ways you could make the same argument about it
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:46am Parq:

Uncle Michael, clicking like. Doug, with me, it's a process of realizing that it doesn't matter whether or not she ever gets Bryce, as long as she gets things like marriage equality.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:47am ndbob:

right Parq
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:47am Uncle Michael:

There's a lot of music I don't like. My solution is to not listen to it...not insult people that do. And Trish...'twas ever thus. You think Fabian records sold on their merits?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:47am Van in DC:

Man. Talk about wondering far afield of Hall talk bwaaa ha ha
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:48am Hugo:

He's ordering a Korg MS20. Bryce was very appreciative when I mentioned it last week on his comments board.

When we were in NY for the 2011 FMU rec fair, we went to hear La Monte Young, one of his big faves. It was bitingly cold out on the streets, but the ambience at the Dream House put us at ease.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:49am Uncle Michael:

@Van: That's why I live in Kansas. Easier to get all over the map from here.

Fabian no - but yes for other early 60s teen idols - there's only one Fabian record I like - "String Along"
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

Halllooo Trish!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:50am Brian in UK:

Doug. 'My trousers are on fire upon seeing the radiant gleam in your spectral eyes'. Any good?
  Fri. 3/29/13 10:50am trish:

Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:51am Parq:

I grew up admiring a lot of very opinionated people. It's taken me a whole bunch of decades to figure out that opinionated does not equal judgmental.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Is that a fire in your trousers or are you just glad to see my radiant gleam? Or both?
  Fri. 3/29/13 10:51am trish:

@Uncle Michael. That's not true. 0-2 has not always been a measured demographic. Big changes happened after the US deregulated advertising to children.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:52am Brian in UK:

Both ofcourse mon ami.
  Fri. 3/29/13 10:53am Robert Brenner:

That is some great psychotic jazz you are playing! More, please!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:53am Uncle Michael:

Think about the musical gestalt of 1969. You know what the number one record of that year was? Sugar, Sugar. Now, I like it...but it is what it is. It's product for children.

@Trish: Not only didn't I say 0-2, I don't even know what it means.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:54am Van in DC:

0-2 is either a hockey or a baseball score. Or soccer.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:55am Uncle Michael:

I used to be opinionated and judgmental. Now I'm just opinionated. I don't care if people like music that I don't and I don't care if they don't like music that I do. I like that when someone and I like the same music that it's a connection.
  Fri. 3/29/13 10:55am trish:

Ha. No. It's a demographic age group.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:57am Brian in UK:

@UM There always used to be oddball records in the past getting into the charts. They have disappeared now it seems. Vaudeville is really dead. Let's face it singles do not sell units.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:57am Hugo:

The new Korg MS 20 mini. Ain't it a thing of beauty?

Should arrive on these shores sometime in April (hopefully).
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:57am Uncle Michael:

Whether or not it has always had a name and a's been exploited for as long as merchandisers have recognized that kids have buying power or drive purchasing decisions. In music, that goes back to nearly the beginning of the rock and roll era.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

Read about and download this Ebenezer Obey record here:
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:00am Brian in UK:

@Hugo I just love the name KORG.

Doug did he have some military prefix? Commander/Chief?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

Ah yes, Hugo, but how about Corgi2013?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Yes, yes: "Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey"
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:01am Lewis:

hey all - I need a good introduction to midi concepts. I am trying to make my new (not nearly as cool as the Korg MS20 Mini) Korg nanoKey talk to Reaper as mechanism to trigger sound clips. I have come to realize that I am lacking some basic conceptual knowledge. And being the intellectual that I am I believe that the right book will solve my problems...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:01am Van in DC:

That is one happy Corgi :)
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:02am Brian in UK:

I salute you Chief Commander Sir Doug de Schulkind. KMA
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:03am Uncle Michael:

@Brian: Did you write that in 1985? Because to the extent that there still *is* a music business, it's gone almost totally back to a singles economy. It's all about the iTunes.

I will agree that the skill at manipulating and exploiting young music buyers has only increased but it's not new. Beiber is just the latest New Kid On The Block that's about to become totally played out. He's not his own fault.

man, I'm uppity today.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:04am Van in DC:

@UM - I express my musical opinion with every post. :)
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
It is no longer all about iTunes. With the under-20 crowd, now it is all about YouTube. That is where my kid and all of her friends get 100% of their music. (We gave Lincoln a $25 iTunes gift card for Xmas and she hasn't touched it.)
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:05am Hugo:

@Do(u)g: Woof woof!

If it can't emulate a Corgi, it ain't no good.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:06am Van in DC:

Sigh. Another to-do after work...that Bodega download is blocked for me here :(

Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:07am Van in DC:

Ha ha ha! Heard a beep and it was my "Downloads" window...I've now downloaded the Phongsi album about 17 times
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:08am Hugo:

Facebook, what's that?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:09am Parq:

Hug, it's this thing they came up with so that middle aged people can show each other viral JPEGs that their kids first saw a year or two earlier.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:09am Uncle Michael:

@Doug: That's interesting. They sit and watch Youtube? They watch it on their phones? Is the playlist dead? Is this like when we were kids, playing 45s? One song at a time...not turning on music and going about our business?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:09am Matt from Springfield:

Good Friday, Doug and Drummers!

If memory serves, Chief Commander was one of the first African sounds I heard around the mid 70s, still sounds great. Relentless, in a kind of relaxed way.

@Hugo: Who needs FB, when we've got FS!!
@NDBob: Hiya from the East!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:13am Brian in UK:

Hello MATT.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:13am Parq:

UM, worse than that (and no less than Adam Gopnik has noted this), they've turned their backs on our quest for the best high fidelity speakers and listen to music on tinny little mini-speakers wired into the players.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:13am Matt from Springfield:

Whoops, hi Uncka Mike, as well!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:15am Uncle Michael:

@Parq. xref Raspberries singles mixed specifically for the single AM radio dashboard speaker in an American car.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:16am Matt from Springfield:

UK Brian, howdy to ya!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:17am Brian in UK:

Doug, what are you calling todays show. 'the aging farts try to remember'

@parq where do you get the 'our' in the search. Always had crap speakers. All the good music was recorded on less than 4 track.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:17am ndbob:

great one here Doug!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

I've got that Gopnik piece sitting right here. We bought our daughter a really nice external, wireless speaker for her iPad—and she never uses it. She doesn't "get" making the music sound better. I've tried to explain that it's better louder, but even that Trojan Horse argument didn't work. Sigh.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:19am Parq:

Hah. Come to think of it, I listened to all my old grade-school 45s on a crappy record player the size of a portable typewriter.

Doug, I know all the words to that song. Did the same thing at Christmas. She smiled all over and even her boyfriend commented on what great speakers they were. The box remains unopened.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:19am Carmichael:

Good morning Douglas, and hello everyone.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

Morning, Carm!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:20am ndbob:

Currently I just use the external speakers from my laptop and my $100 turntable/radio/cd cassette player from Target
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:21am ndbob:

morning Carmichael!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:22am Uncle Michael:

Find the craziest, audiophile dealership in P-burgh. Take her favorite song...and let her hear it on a quarter-million dollar system in a perfect listening room. Then tell her that she'll never have that...but there's a lot of room between her computer speakers and that listening room. People do need to know what good audio sounds like. They also need not to embrace the $1000 power cord craziness...but that's another story.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:22am Brian in UK:

Lovin' the mix today Doug. Keeps us on our metaphorical toes.

Hello Carmichael.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

I must admit, Carmichael, every time I see your name, I think "Carm." Then I think of Carmella Soprano. Not a bad association, really. Me and the wife just started watching the Sopranos again from the beginning and you know what? It holds up amazingly well.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:22am glenn:

parq, it has long been my contention that once most of us can afford that amazing sound system of our dreams that our hearing has deteriorated to the point where we can no longer hear most of the notes anyway.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:23am Brian in UK:

Keep Carm and play another record.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:23am Lewis:

I had been saving for a pair of Axiom speakers, but ended up with a decent pair of Polk RT3 from craigslist. Now gonna buy a zoom h4n with the speaker money (@glenn point well taken)
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:24am Hugo:

My speakers are called IMF. 30 years old. Not to be confused with that agency in DC.

Eje Thelin! Cool!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:24am Van in DC:

I wish I could get Studio P something like an $8,000 turntable
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

Would you repeat that, please?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:25am Lewis:

@doug - is that a comment list sight gag?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

I still have a set of Advent speakers from 1979 that produce a magnificent sound.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:25am Uncle Michael:

I always listen to the best sound available in a given context...because the music matters most. On a home, well...I'm listening to this show through a pretty decent setup. My ears have held up really well, especially, considering.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:26am Lewis:

@doug - yeah wish I had held on to my advents from way back when...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:28am Uncle Michael:

I'm butt-groovin'.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:29am Parq:

I listen at work on a $30 pair of Altec puter speakers that sound better than any $100 puter speaker set up I've ever owned. Sometimes it's just luck.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

Comments list sight gags, the bastard stepchildren of radio sight gags!
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:30am glenn:

Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:31am Parq:

Would you repeat that, please? >>
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:31am Brian in UK:

I used to work with a guy who spent £3000 on speakers and listened to the Pink Floyd. Go figure.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
Too much information...
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:31am Parq:

Once again, I came in a measure behind the band. Gotta get bigger sheet music.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

Pierre Akengengue is here:
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:33am Hugo:

I'm trying to think of the first African tune I heard. Hugh Masakela - Grazing in the Grass? Later, Osibisa and Assagai.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:34am dçþät:

phew! kids on spring break--had to play soccer. What'd I miss?
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:35am glenn:

i have two sets of missions. the little bookshelf units are way, way better than the floor units. that said, the quality of the speakers is meaningless if you're driving them from a 15$ amplifier. i also disagree with uncle michael to some extent. you don't need 1000$$ metre cable, but the 10$ metre cable does make a big difference over lamp cord.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:37am Carmichael:

Doug, you can call me Carm anytime. Funny, that name brings to my mind Carmine Raguzo from Laverne & Shirley. Although I might look good in spats and a fedora.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

The next song coming up is DISGUSTING. I will explain later.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:40am Damon Runyon:

EVERYBODY looks good in spats and a fedora.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:41am Uncle Michael:

@Glenn, in my radio studio a set of '80s vintage Mission boohshelves are my primary listening speakers. Not the near-field monitors but just for the hanging around and listening speakers.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:42am Carmichael:

After years of Bose bookshelf speakers, I moved to a new house and shelled out an assload of coin for a 6.1 surround system and HDTV. Best decision I ever made, at least musically.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:42am dçþät:

This is great--thanks for reminding me of Los Piranas...
  Fri. 3/29/13 11:43am trish:

Wow, this 'Champeta ..'
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:43am Uncle Michael:

This Champeta is giving me the crazy.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:45am glenn:

assload of coin has now entered my lexicon. thank you, carmichael.
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:48am Uncle Michael:

Did this guy just say something about his "fwatem bwe bwe?"
Avatar Fri. 3/29/13 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

Mr. Matavire was charged with rape, a crime for which he eventually did jail time. (Only two years.) This song, released before the trial is mocking the charges. Like I said, DISGUSTING.
