The filthier, the better! Morning Duke!
Avatar 🥁 8:12am duke:

You said it. The filthier, the better! The image today looks like FMU DJs running off with their filthy jazz records while the FCC fumes.

I like filthy...but I love greezy. Morning all.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:18am Uncle Michael:

The lid on that record player reminds me of a classic box and stick trap. I think those kids baited it with Bait-ovin.

A classic Beethoven and switch!

Doug, I just noticed that your stream's icon on the WFMU-for-iPad app is a set of bongos. Rat own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46am Doug Schulkind:

Same as the stream's iPhone app icon. I studied many long minutes before picking that, Parq!

Is the stream down or is it just me? Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54am Doug Schulkind:

THE STREAM IS BACK. I was stupidly futzing with something and made it cry. I promised it ice cream and now everything is back.
Avatar 8:54am Van in DC:

All better now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56am Doug Schulkind:

I am constantly cleaning up the ID tags on the MP3s in the stream's queue. Unfortunately, I tried to do this with THE TRACK THAT IS CURRENTLY PLAYING, and that is (apparently) a bad thing to do.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:11am Uncle Michael:

Ok, so I'm working on this theme show for next Wednesday. It's a not-in-the-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame theme. I've decided that it won't be based on who I think *should* be in a well-run hall...but rather, artists that a reasonably engaged music fan that doesn't pay significant attention to the Hall or its politics could reasonably be surprised to learn *aren't* in the Hall.

Does that make sense?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:12am Brian in UK:

I loves a bouzouki.
Avatar 🥁 9:12am Parq:

UM, did someone tell you it had to?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:12am Uncle Michael:

Hey Doug. Just read your BOTB post about Google Reader. You originally turned me on to using that and I was bummed when I heard the news a couple weeks ago too. I haven't had a chance to start looking for other options, but besides Feedly, Flipboard is also one to consider (according to Marketplace report I heard). Thanks for the insight on Feedly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

@Nardo
So far my only disappointment with Feedly is that it's not Reader. Mostly a positive experience, so far. (I love that it can import all your saved items from Google.) I will poke around with Flipboard. Thanks!
Avatar 9:25am still b/p:

I do use the Flash sometimes, but usually the ridiculously groggy boggy start-up and the delay while anti-virus software does its check are what make the waiting so gnashy waily and long.

Does MediaFire not work any longer or is it just for the Phongsi Woranut album that it is broke?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

@Van
Mediafire in general still works, but as a company, it has gotten extremely skittish and is taking down links to anything that it thinks may be a copyright infringement or for which there has been a complaint.

Which page are you trying to get that Phongsi from?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:29am Uncle Michael:

@ndbob: Good. I was hoping it did.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:30am Uncle Michael:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:22am Uncle Michael:

I spun some almost-Madness on my show last night...the Jools Holland/Suggs song about Ian Dury...

Avatar 🥁 10:24am Parq:

Pat, just let her do her thing. My daughter went through her Averill Lavigne phase and even her A Simple Plan phase, and I just patiently waited.
Avatar 10:24am dçþät:

Avatar 🥁 10:26am Parq:

Pat, if they're saying three years, you better pray it's *only* five.

Avatar 10:27am Lewis:

@Parq - agree, but it can be painful and booorrrinnnggg.
Avatar 10:27am dçþät:

@Parq, I know, I know. I approached it the wrong way at the start--wasn't ready for Lady Gaga, etc. "YOU WILL LISTEN TO THE KINKS AND THE FLAMING LIPS" but I've found you're right, you just have to cool it. The other day I heard her from the other room: "DAD, where's the Fugazi CD? the one with Waiting Room..."

Avatar 🥁 10:29am Parq:

I still remember riding in a car with my daughter on a Saturday afternoon. She had just gotten old enough to sit in the front seat. I had Terre T on the radio. She asked me whose show it was and I told her. She gazed at the radio thoughtfully for a few secs, and then sat forward and turned up the volume. *That's* my girl!
Avatar 🥁 10:30am Parq:

She's run with a comic book/gaming crowd for years now, and that informs her current listening. The stuff that Nick the Bard does is right up her alley.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:32am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

My daughter is full-on into the current pop music shite. I know better than to try to push her in any other direction. As is said, "If you Love them, let them listen to crappy music until they figure things out."

Some of it's just old fashioned rebellion, Doug. When you get right down to it, we of all parents have it coming.
Avatar 10:36am ndbob:

I rarely listen to current pop but when I do it's a mix - good music, bad music, most mediocre - nothing wrong with it - just that's it's a low priority for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Doug Schulkind:

I listen to a lot of the current pop on the car radio (when driving with Miss Daughter). I am amazed at the number of top of the chart tracks that hardly use any real music instruments.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:42am Uncle Michael:

You know what gets on my wick? Grownups and serious music fans caring that breakfast cereal for tweens, like Beiber, is nutritionally without value. Is that a fire in your trousers or are you just glad to see my radiant gleam? Or both?
  10:51am trish:

@Uncle Michael. That's not true. 0-2 has not always been a measured demographic. Big changes happened after the US deregulated advertising to children.

0-2 is either a hockey or a baseball score. Or soccer.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:55am Uncle Michael:

I used to be opinionated and judgmental. Now I'm just opinionated. I don't care if people like music that I don't and I don't care if they don't like music that I do. I like that when someone and I like the same music that it's a connection.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

Ah yes, Hugo, but how about Corgi2013?

Yes, yes: "Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey"
Avatar 11:01am Lewis:

hey all - I need a good introduction to midi concepts. I am trying to make my new (not nearly as cool as the Korg MS20 Mini) Korg nanoKey talk to Reaper as mechanism to trigger sound clips. I have come to realize that I am lacking some basic conceptual knowledge. And being the intellectual that I am I believe that the right book will solve my problems...

That is one happy Corgi :)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:02am Brian in UK:

I salute you Chief Commander Sir Doug de Schulkind. KMA
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:03am Uncle Michael:

@Brian: Did you write that in 1985? Because to the extent that there still *is* a music business, it's gone almost totally back to a singles economy. It's all about the iTunes.

I will agree that the skill at manipulating and exploiting young music buyers has only increased but it's not new. Beiber is just the latest New Kid On The Block that's about to become totally played out. He's not his own fault.

man, I'm uppity today.
Avatar 11:04am Van in DC:

@UM - I express my musical opinion with every post. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
It is no longer all about iTunes. With the under-20 crowd, now it is all about YouTube. That is where my kid and all of her friends get 100% of their music. (We gave Lincoln a $25 iTunes gift card for Xmas and she hasn't touched it.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Hugo:

Facebook, what's that?
Avatar 🥁 11:09am Parq:

Hug, it's this thing they came up with so that middle aged people can show each other viral JPEGs that their kids first saw a year or two earlier.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:09am Uncle Michael:

@Doug: That's interesting. They sit and watch Youtube? They watch it on their phones? Is the playlist dead? Is this like when we were kids, playing 45s? One song at a time...not turning on music and going about our business?

UM, worse than that (and no less than Adam Gopnik has noted this), they've turned their backs on our quest for the best high fidelity speakers and listen to music on tinny little mini-speakers wired into the players.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Matt from Springfield:

Whoops, hi Uncka Mike, as well!

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:17am Brian in UK:

Doug, what are you calling todays show. 'the aging farts try to remember'

@parq where do you get the 'our' in the search. Always had crap speakers. All the good music was recorded on less than 4 track.
Avatar 11:17am ndbob:

great one here Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

@Parq
I've got that Gopnik piece sitting right here. We bought our daughter a really nice external, wireless speaker for her iPad—and she never uses it. She doesn't "get" making the music sound better. I've tried to explain that it's better louder, but even that Trojan Horse argument didn't work. Sigh.
Avatar 🥁 11:19am Parq:

Hah. Come to think of it, I listened to all my old grade-school 45s on a crappy record player the size of a portable typewriter.

Doug, I know all the words to that song. Did the same thing at Christmas. She smiled all over and even her boyfriend commented on what great speakers they were. The box remains unopened.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:22am Uncle Michael:

Find the craziest, audiophile dealership in P-burgh. Take her favorite song...and let her hear it on a quarter-million dollar system in a perfect listening room. Then tell her that she'll never have that...but there's a lot of room between her computer speakers and that listening room. People do need to know what good audio sounds like. They also need not to embrace the $1000 power cord craziness...but that's another story.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:22am Brian in UK:

Lovin' the mix today Doug. Keeps us on our metaphorical toes.

Hello Carmichael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

I must admit, Carmichael, every time I see your name, I think "Carm." Then I think of Carmella Soprano. Not a bad association, really. Me and the wife just started watching the Sopranos again from the beginning and you know what? It holds up amazingly well.
Avatar 11:22am glenn:

parq, it has long been my contention that once most of us can afford that amazing sound system of our dreams that our hearing has deteriorated to the point where we can no longer hear most of the notes anyway.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:23am Brian in UK:

Keep Carm and play another record.

I always listen to the best sound available in a given context...because the music matters most. On a plane...an iPod...at work...computer speakers...at home, well...I'm listening to this show through a pretty decent setup. My ears have held up really well, especially, considering.

Avatar 11:35am glenn:

i have two sets of missions. the little bookshelf units are way, way better than the floor units. that said, the quality of the speakers is meaningless if you're driving them from a 15$ amplifier. i also disagree with uncle michael to some extent. you don't need 1000$$ metre cable, but the 10$ metre cable does make a big difference over lamp cord.
Avatar 11:37am Carmichael:

Doug, you can call me Carm anytime. Funny, that name brings to my mind Carmine Raguzo from Laverne & Shirley. Although I might look good in spats and a fedora.
