@ Caryn @Hep @Rev Rab:"Peter Coyote was born Robert Peter Cohon" bit.ly...
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:32pm rrg:

Plus I'm too old to know what "w00t" means.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:33pm Caryn:

Peter Cohon's letter reminds me of Arlo Guthrie's speech in the Woodstock film. "I was just rappin' with the fuzz, man... can you dig it?" Even in the context, it felt like a sudden overdose of stereotypical 60s lingo.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:33pm Caryn:

@Sem: OMG!!!
  Wed. 3/27/13 3:34pm Stinky_F00t:

Very nice, Louis Smith is groovy

Now my main wish in life is for an interviewer to hand Peter Coyote this press clipping and ask, "Did you write this, man?"
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:35pm Yair Yona:

Nice tune by Louis Smith
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:35pm steve:

whats the deal with the use of "hep" and "drug"? i thought hep was a good thing... but doesn't sound like it in this context
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:36pm Caryn:

@steve: in this case, hep might not be the slang "hep", but short for hepatitis. But what do I know?
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:36pm Alison Porchnik:

Peter Coyote is also an ardent consumer of Dr. Hauschka skin care products.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:37pm Mike East:

short for hepatitis?
Wed. 3/27/13 3:37pm Hep in the Country:

Whoooooah! Could it be him? The dates and places all fit. And how many Peter Cohons cold there be? Either way, One wonders if the letter was serious or just a goof.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:37pm Mike East:

...shouldn't even bother when Caryn's around.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:38pm Caryn:

@Mike: what? Just an example of "great minds think alike"...
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:38pm Sem Chumbo:

www.petercoyote.com... But dead email link, site dated 1998
Wed. 3/27/13 3:39pm Hep in the Country:

Yes, in those days, "Hep" was a common term for type A hepatitis, which was enjoying a bit of an epidemic at the time, especially among cats who shared needles.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:40pm rrg:

Cats aren't really as smart as some of you claim.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:41pm steve:

  Wed. 3/27/13 3:41pm Woo:

Caryn, good point about Arlo. But he was young so we make an exception. Graham Nash and Stephen Stills, that's another thing.

Hey, welcome to the Friendship Society, RRN63. When did that happen? I just noticed.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:47pm fleep:

It's a drag ---> I was drug? Past tense of a noun?
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:47pm rrg:

Ognibene? Oh, you're having me on.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:47pm Irwin:

en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:48pm rrg:

Yes, "I was drug" is a creative hippie use of the English language, which is very pliable in that way.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:49pm Caryn:

"Drug": 1940s- US Black slang: exhausted, disinclined, bored (from verb "drag"). Thus sayeth my slang dictionary.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:49pm rrg:

So you're saying that Peter Cohon was black?
Wed. 3/27/13 3:49pm Listening Out There:

"Jenny O" might have a better reason for the initial-as-last-name than "Kenny G" -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_g
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:49pm fleep:

@Caryn: Danke!
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:50pm rrg:

You could have told me "Oswald" and I would have believed it. But you didn't abuse that trust.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:52pm Caryn:

And the verb "drag" apparently in the sense of "to irritate, to bore, to bring down" (1940s- US slang). Which also connects with the noun "a drag".
Wed. 3/27/13 3:52pm Hep in the Country:

OMG, that's a good guess: "drug" could well have been past tense for "drag" among Sausalito type cats in that remote era. Hence: I was drug = I was subjected to a real drag.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:52pm rrg:

Why do I have to explicitly click "Return to playlist" after posting a comment? Why doesn't it just do that automatically for me?

Jeeze. As if my CTS weren't bad enough already.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:53pm _crazyandy_______________________________:

Don't let the machines get you down
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:54pm Caryn:

So, "drug" = adjective, "drag" = verb, "a drag" = noun. Now we can use the hep cat terminology in all its forms.

And for health and safety reasons, be vigilant so you can distinguish between hep cats and cats with hep.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- happened the very night of the Finale, young sir: Planned (what I thot) the right moment astrologically, even, to join up & to pledge - & of course my ancient PC threw a wrench in & delayed it (universe had own ideas); hippie enuff for everyone - ?...
- yes, fleep - how old are you? Never spoke to a hippie? Good lord - I might talk like this given 1/2 a chance - & then old hillibillies are confused by 'stylee' & any more recent hip-hop speak...we should all speak King's English like Prof. Elemental I s'pose...
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:55pm Droll:

rrg, I think it's to inform you that you did submit it even if it doesn't appear for a few seconds. Maybe there should also be a "Don't ask me again" checkbox you can click every time that does nothing.

  Wed. 3/27/13 3:57pm Ralphine:

Peter Coyote did almost die from hepatitis.
  Wed. 3/27/13 3:58pm Laura L:

Irwin, you have a freak capital "I" there in "Beat Circus." Not that I'm gonna start in on that.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:58pm rrg:

It could display that page for a few seconds and then redirect automatically.

Are you saying that it already does that? And that if I just waited I would know that? Are you saying that I'm too impatient? Is THAT what you're saying?
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:59pm dan:

Hey Irwin, have you heard ZIP by physmiz?
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 3:59pm Irwin:

@LL: Fixed. That would drive me crazy too.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:00pm dan:

Zziiiiiiiiiiiip
ZZZZZZZZZiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip!
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:00pm rrg:

Nope, I had to click it. I waited all that time for NOTHING. And I'm a busy man. Too busy, apparently, to find all the typos that LL has been finding.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:01pm dan:

Zip is 8 hours long, and literally takes you to hell and back... quite good though
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:02pm dan:

@rrg, just keep waiting, I promise.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:02pm Droll:

rrg, Last time I reported a problem to Kenzo he patched the website within an hour. I know some people just don't care, but Kenzo is not one of them.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:02pm rrg:

I've been to Coney Island. There's an aquarium there.

I'm just sayin'.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:03pm steve:

rrg - a (semi professional) answer to this and many other related questions non-programmers ask: probably because it was easier to do it this way. building robust web apps like the live comments and Friendship Society can be nuanced, expensive, and time consuming... very very often less than perfect interactions like that are there only because they work well enough and its not worth the time and money to improve a feature that's less than perfect, but gets the job done.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:03pm fleep:

@RRN63 You are a Water Rabbit. I am the previous rabbit, the Metal Rabbit. But this usage did not arise among Pawtucket hippies.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:05pm rrg:

In this case a tiny addition to the text of the page would handle the redirect automatically after a suitably short-but-not-too-short delay. Perhaps this is the way Kenzo prefers it.

Hey, who are you calling a "non-programmer"?
  Wed. 3/27/13 4:06pm B. Vigilant:

Wikipedia says P. Coyote's first and middle given names were Pinchus Rachmil. The letter says the guitar was inlaid "with the initials RPC at the 12th fret. Maybe Irwin can get Peter C. (or his secretary, or publicist) on the phone and clear up this whole strange trip.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:06pm northguineahills:

Yeah, Kenzo tweaks the site when he has time. Now that the marathon is over, he'll probably look at what else he can do.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:06pm rrg:

These guys don't sound like "Ladies" to me.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:07pm _crazyandy_______________________________:

I'm fairly positive that some of my comments have auto-redirected in the past.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:07pm _crazyandy_______________________________:

Then again, I'm crazy.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:08pm rrg:

How long did you have to wait? I waited over a minute and nothing happened.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:08pm steve:

my bad rrg! really though, im sure you're aware, the answer to "why is this thing that could obviously be improved not being improved?" is "time and maybe money"
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@3:57 B. Vigilant : Live up to your name ( : P - sorry, but...I'm only human) - & check the Playlist! : )

- I keep whining that I want the Playlist & the Comments to be available in different Windows (esp. for Ken's Program w/ his gifs)
- altho' likely as not I am wrong - & this would not help my Browser to have more Windows going
- but I could @ least Stop one - &/or Choose...
- My PC is scrapheap action, too - so I don't know how much others share my situation(s)...
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:09pm Droll:

rrg, A minute?! That's not nearly long enough. Patience - and never, never, never take your eyes off the screen or you'll miss the Easter Egg.
  Wed. 3/27/13 4:10pm Brett:

Sounds kinda like Homer Simpson singing "Heroes" by David Bowie?
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:10pm Caryn:

"I was on dope" not to be confused with "I was drug".
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:11pm rrg:

Which would be "I was drugged". Right.
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:11pm steve:

you'd think drug would be a good thing!
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 4:12pm rrg:

Now that we're relieved of the need to do arithmetic, the next logical step is to automate "Return to playlist."

@rrg: You're not too impatient. That intermediate page is there for a historical reason that no longer applies. I'll probably look to change that behavior, although a much bigger improvement to the whole flow is likely to happen first anyway.
@Jeff: There has never been an "auto-redirect" after posting a comment.
@Revolution Rabbit: Separating playlist from comments isn't going to happen, but a different change is afoot that might make GIF-heavy playlists less taxing. The catch is, as soon as I make said change, Ken F. and others are going to start sticking videos on their playlists, bringing your browser crashing down again anyway.
@Droll: I will never document the easter eggs.
@Irwin: Oh, thanks for doing a radio show!

Um, oops. I must've just been on acid or something - I guess I was conflating the auto-returning behavior after signing in with the gotta-click behavior to return to a playlist after commenting, because I'd never actually consciously paid attention to each step of the process until rrg complained. I presumably just always clicked the return link automatically and didn't notice doing so.

After posting, one must click to return.

Just took three online trainings, ranging from three to five weeks each, all unpaid, but each leads to an additional paid work stream starting in June.

No problem I just save the crap I wrote for older trainings and paste it into newer ones. 0:-) They all cover the same damn crap everyone already knows. It's an income support program for the full-timers who run the trainings :-)

Something will stick, Caryn, something always will. Keep at it!
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 5:51pm steve:

that's rough, im sorry to hear that ngh. btw, do you have any programming skills?
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 5:52pm northguineahills:

I have programming skills, but I've usually only used it to clean up simple things or to write pseudo-code for the developers. I'm ok, but no genius like some people I know.

Is this Bikini Kill?

Escher filled his notebooks w/ one trip to Italy & never needed travel again.
- Italy also makes me think of Suze Rotollo's book about being w/ Dylan early 60's - "A Freewheelin' Time"
- but really, you shouldn't care...

Goodness, where has the time gone? Look, we're almost done here again.

Thanks, Irwin. G'night, all. Back here again in a couple of weeks (I expect that I'll be busy overseas next week).
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 5:58pm Caryn:

@ngh: yeah, the jobs I'm now going for are the same type that led to me ending up in a near-psychotic state last time. So I'm somewhat anxious even if I manage to get them. But as there is literally no other work here, had to bite the bullet.

S'long, rrg--have fun!
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 5:58pm steve:

sorry if its annoying or lame to say this... if you have lots of free time and are relatively young and underemployed the answer is to start going on coursera or signing up for web or programming classes. its daunting at first but becomes easy and fun eventually and is a very good way to make yourself more employable. i didn't go to school for comp sci but taught myself and have managed to make a living as a freelancer for 5+ years...

@RRG: Buon Viaggio! an if you happen to be near a computer next week, check in w/us!

Gheezus Caryn - no openings for a human supercomputing brain like your own?
- You're obviously looking in only a specific skillset (payrange, whathaveyou)...
Avatar Wed. 3/27/13 6:08pm Caryn:

@RRN63: nope, have looked for anything I'm the least bit qualified for, but nothing. I was accepted into a thing where a professional whose only job is looking for jobs for specific people finds you a job, and he announced after 3 months that he was cancelling things, because even he could not find anyone in his group jobs because no-one in the area is hiring. Attempts to do SOMETHING went awry when even all 6 openings for cleaning women in the area announced that you need a driving licence and your own car to do the job. No car: no job. So yeah, no specific skillset or pay range demands, just literally no work, except for people with cars or high training in welding or other such skills. *sigh*
