Good morning Doug! Did you see the Library of Congress music news yesterday? You like Ornette Coleman, right...?

"The Shape of Jazz to Come," Ornette Coleman (1959) was honored.

www.loc.gov...
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:25am Doug Schulkind:

Wow! Thanks for that, Van. You know my maternal grandfather once worked at the LoC. I love that list of recordings. Ornette is brilliant and that Cachao record is amazing. Hard to get past "Bacon, Beans and Limousines" on the list!
Avatar    Fri. 3/22/13 8:28am Van in DC:

I love visiting the LoC on occasion during my daily lunch time trek around the mall area here :)
Avatar    Fri. 3/22/13 8:29am duke:

I'm glad to see that the successful marathon has allowed WFMU to upgrade to the latest DJ technology.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:33am Doug Schulkind:

See if you can hear the difference in today's tin-can cast today, Duke!
Avatar    Fri. 3/22/13 8:34am Van in DC:

I wonder if the programs referenced by the LoC article will have any impact on available musical blog items that we all love so much around here? Specifically the federal copyright thingy to pre-1972 recordings?
Avatar    Fri. 3/22/13 8:40am bobdc:

Doug, what did your grandfather do there? I'm actually a bit of a metadata geek by trade, and the LoC has been doing cool stuff on that front for 200 years.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:45am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
He was an administrator. He was a linguist by trade. Not sure how that came into play at the Library.
Avatar    Fri. 3/22/13 8:47am Van in DC:

Knowledge in every form comes into play there Doug! I had an amazing behind the scenes tour given by my drinking buddy Director of Rare Items & Collectibles a few years back :)

Nice photoshopping. You should get some made for real and use it one of next year's 'thon premiums. (Premia?)
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 8:57am Doug Schulkind:

@Parq
Aren't premia some kind of huge rodent? (Not that WFMU shouldn't consider offering them for the 2014 marathon!)
Avatar    Fri. 3/22/13 8:58am Uncle Michael:

I like how the pictures on the front of the player have been done too. I recognize Sharpling. Who are the other two?

"Asbestos Besotted Tarantula" would make a good name for -- well, no it wouldn't, but it's still an elegant turn of a phrase.

Well the article Listener Holly sent me calls the poor thing "contaminated," be we all know the tarantula enjoyed every minute of it.

Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

Don't worry, Shaun. We recycled all the children who failed the test.

You know, I have to say, when I was trying to figure what track to begin the show with, a conversation happened in my head that went something like this:

ME: "Start with that Moroccan thing. It's killer."

OTHER ME: "It's a little raucous. Maybe begin with something more calming and inviting."

ME: "Who're you kidding?! It'll blow them away. You know they'll love it. Jesus, it's amazing."

OTHER ME: "Yes yes, of course you're right. (You always are.) What was I thinking."

I read "Things Fall Apart" in my early 20's because I was into African things, and my sister had a copy, and Jerry Harrison had a song by that name. Then I read "No Longer At Ease". I am not sure why I did not read any more of his works.

Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

@Aurélie
Hard to say. My first reaction is that it is a stretch to claim that there are "Kentucky roots" in all the different kinds of music to come out of the state. The music from the mountains of Kentucky are surely identifiable as "Kentucky" music. But to claim the music of Helen Humes and Lionel Hampton as authentically Kentuckian sounds like not much more than a great sounding book proposal.

I think a great FMU show theme would be along the lines of "Ge" to "Gi." Pull a whole show from about two feet of shelf.

Yeah it's really neat to see the bear but then after a while I start to think of the sad sets of circumstances that cause these guys to be running about in NJ suburbia. starts to bum me out.
  Fri. 3/22/13 10:56am Aurélie:

@doug Great thanks to you, yeah the whole delirious academic speech about *the unconditional influence of Kentucky music* looks *weird*, I was just searching a great about Music history of the US and I thought starting with this one.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 10:56am still b/p:

Doug, get yerself up to Moosehead Lake or Baxter State Park area for an overnight and a moose lookaround. Seen many many moose. My closest encounter was at about arm's length in Baxter, on a trail that didn't give us much room for going past each other....slowwwwwly...good moose, goooood moose...
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 10:57am joe:

@Uncle Michael I love that idea. I love the whole idea of total chance radio. Something like that or chance games like Zorn and Cage to figure out what to play.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
Yeah, I know I know. There just isn't much moosing happening on the coast. Sigh.

Track # 2 from GE to GI
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

@Aurélie
Here are two books on American music that I adore:

Boogaloo: The Quintessence of American Popular Music
www.amazon.com...

and Sonata for Jukebox: An Autobiography of My Ears
www.amazon.com...

Not sure how available they are, but they are fantastic.
Avatar    Fri. 3/22/13 11:04am Michael:

Doug - My wife and daughter and I were driving through New Hampshire, north of Mt. Washington and saw a bunch of cars on the side of the road. We pulled over and saw people crowded around 2 moose – a mother and her young ‘un. From far away they look big – up close like we got they are huge. We looked, took a few pics and got out of there. So, just be careful of what you wish for, moose-wise.

@Michael
I don't need to pet the beasts. Gazing admiringly from a distance would be just fine. I will however save your phrase "moose-wise" for later use.

How about that Harvard, eh?

I just bought those books. Thanks Doug. I haven't quite shifted into baseball book mode for the summer yet.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

This record has another track that is 29+ minutes long. I should have played that one. I don't want this to end.
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 11:13am Shaun:

Just thinking you should play this again when it ends.

@Doug - really! Go Harvard! :)

@Uncle Michael
Funny you saw that. Both of those books were summer reading titles. The Sonata for Jukebox especially is wonderful.

I finished Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon recently. It has plenty of references to Funk and Boogaloo as well as a zeppelin named Minnie Ripperton
Avatar Fri. 3/22/13 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

I'm sure you're absolutely right. I have "this thing" about not correcting spellings on record jackets unless I know it's a typo. (Even then I sometimes don't.)

Speaking of books, my sister's book about American Red Cross was recently released. In the beginning, it has a chronology section that includes many events, many of them disasters. If I have the time, I would like to see if I can find a song about each of the disasters. I know I heard one about the Johnstownville Flood of 1889 on this show a few years ago.
