Irene, self-photographing with Robyn

On the eve of a brand new album, a tour and a significant birthday, Robyn Hitchcock was dropping by some of his favorite radio stations to perform some solo sessions. Mr. Hitchcock is no stranger to Irene's show, having been on twice before, and said he felt it was important that WFMU not be left out. In advance of the new album, Robyn was ensconced in WFMU's Love Room to play songs from his newest disc, "Love from London," to be released in March 5th, 2013.

Bonjour Irene !
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:04pm Van in DC:

Wonderful start...really looking forward to the show today! Hi Irene and Sean and Pierre and everyone
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:05pm Cheri Pi:

Nice beginnings.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:05pm SheWolf:

Ooh ahhh
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:05pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

g'morning. & thanks for Lady Rachel -- Sad to admit I wasn't very familiar with Ayers' solo stuff until all the tributes here (mostly knew the early Soft Machine). But have been seriously digging this...
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:06pm doca:

hi irene and all listeners, great start indeed. sad loss though.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:07pm doca:

i was surprised i received a wfmu letter on saturday! i didn't knew wfmu reached its listeners even though they're in brazil, it made my day.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:09pm pierre:

I've been feeling what Rev. Turnip Druid has described too, so thanks WFMU DJs to have been playing (not sure if i'm correct here) many of his solo work.

@ Cheri Pi : (from last comment board) I use the powers of my japanese culture addict roomate to understand those songs
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:11pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hello all, The FMU Grim Reaper... Multiple songs by an artist! I very much wish that i focused more on Mr. Ayers when he was still with us. Like the Rev, I did enjoy early Soft Machine in the day.
Mon. 2/25/13 12:13pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Great Kevin Ayers tribute, Irene
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:19pm Sem Chumbo:

Gratitude overflowing. Thank you, FMU.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:20pm Irene Trudel:

Kevin Ayers is one of the musicians that had a big influence on my Early WFMU listening. Very sad that he's gone. In my tape collection I have a concert I recorded in 1993 at Maxwell's in Hoboken that I had permission to air. It was pre-archives. When I find the DAT (only the cassette has surfaced) I'll make the archive available online.
  Mon. 2/25/13 12:21pm paula pc:

thanks for this set Irene
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:21pm SheWolf:

Same here Rev Turnip. I'm enjoying the Ayers education I've received the past few days though.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:21pm BDR:

George would have been 70 today. HINT! And thanks much for the Ayers.
  Mon. 2/25/13 12:24pm paula pc:

this is stunning
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:26pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks BDR! I think I can work a little Georgie in there.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:31pm YETI BOB:

Hi Irene,
Thanks for the tribute to Kevin...as for myself, at 66, I can assure you the 68 is NOT old!

Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:45pm Van in DC:

Really nice
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:46pm Mike East:

I was playing some George Harrison on guitar for my baby yesterday. Surprisingly, she's a very attentive audience
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:46pm Matt from Springfield:

Agree wholeheartedly with paula! Lovely!
The drumbeat has interesting interplay on the album version of this, but what a nice, laid back early version without it.
  Mon. 2/25/13 12:47pm don:

1st single by Soft Machine, pre 1st album ,is a double-sided gem of early Ayers.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:48pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi there Irene and everyone!
Thrilled about Robyn - what a good arrival of Spring!

Great tribute to Kevin Ayers too.
Mon. 2/25/13 12:48pm Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Israel,Earth,Milky Way):

My Enemy is one amazing song
Hi Irene
Mon. 2/25/13 12:49pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

@Mike, I was listening to Clay Pigeon's podcast last week, were you one of the callers?
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:50pm Chris from DC:

Agreed, this is fantastic.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:50pm Mike East:

@Sean - Yes!
Mon. 2/25/13 12:54pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Great set, Irene
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:55pm Matt from Springfield:

@Sean: Check Fabio's list for the comments. @6:31 I said:

"Angel in Levi's Mike and Luciana East!
Thanks for calling!"

Based off what Clay called Mike earlier--he started to read that on the Air, but was cut off! :)
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:57pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Yair! Totally agreed on the RT song. And Yes, Matt, Robyn means spring is coming. Literally-- he seems to schedule time in NYC at the start of spring.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 12:58pm Mike East:

@Matt - that freaked me out a little, because I actually was wearing Levi's at the time, and wondered how Clay knew. Maybe I'm just a predictable dude.
Mon. 2/25/13 1:02pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Love this and the track you played last week,
  Mon. 2/25/13 1:09pm seang:

Hello Robyn Hitchcock!
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:09pm Matt from Springfield:

Wooooohoooooo! And so it begins...!
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:12pm Matt from Springfield:

I recently bought Invisible Hitchcock on vinyl, still need to listen to that. Apparently it's out-takes and B-sides from 1981–1985, so should be interesting.

There weren't many of his LPs available, so I bought it partially based on the great US release cover art! ;)

@Matt - I've never seen someone look so badass plucking a radish.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:15pm YETI BOB:

Matt: "Invisible" has some of my faves ... "IMy Favorite Buildings", "I've Got a Message For You" - give that platter a spin! (And eat a radish while you listen to it)
  Mon. 2/25/13 1:18pm ~L:

Wonderful!
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:19pm Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: I know, and while in a garden dressed like that! And flaunting nice looking radishes! Magnifique!

Thanks Yeti Bob! (Chomping a radish goes w/o saying!)

Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:25pm Matt from Springfield:

Oh WOW! "Visions of Johanna" is a great one, and Robyn playing a stripped down acoustic of it??! WOW! :D
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:27pm Jennique:

Oh boy, two of my all-time favorites combined! SO wonderful to hear Robyn singing one of the best Dylan songs. Thank you Mr. Hitchcock!
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:31pm slugluv1313:

Such a sultry voice. Ay-YI YI! Hard to concentrate here at work.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:41pm Irene Trudel:

So many great quotes from Robyn!
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:42pm Matt from Springfield:

@Irene: Trying to transcribe some of them, for quick Googling! :)
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:42pm Mike East:

I was literally thinking this morning about making mixtapes in real time. I miss that. I was doing it for a while (recording records into the computer), but its just not quite the same.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:42pm Van in DC:

Irene the Engineer :)
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:46pm Matt from Springfield:

I think people don't like the clinging of change--I don't. Paper bills fit nicely and fold. Though when I was last in the UK I enjoyed the £1 coins, for small expenses that was convenient (and probably cost less to mint than a paper note).
  Mon. 2/25/13 1:46pm seang:

68 is not young or middle-aged so it's kinda old
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:47pm Droll:

The root problem with the music business today is the "customers" won't pay for music. The problem is social, not a business or technical.
Attention is not a substitute for being paid, and it makes no sense to master songwriting and performance so you can earn a living selling apparel and stickers.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:47pm Matt from Springfield:

There have been limited edition Half Dollars mainly for numismatists, not really in circulation.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:47pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Van!! It's an honor to engineer for Robyn.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:47pm Jennique:

I still have a double cassette player at home with all my mixtapes of my youth. Read that a dad gave his son a cassette walkman to use. Not only did the son not know what the buttons were meant to do, he thought the switch for "Metal" was meant for heavy metal music.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:50pm Matt from Springfield:

And Irene's great engineering of other sessions too!
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:50pm Mike East:

I was also thinking about my old fisher price record player. Do they still make crappy record players for kids? I still have a lot of old storytelling 45's that I'd love my kid to mess around with...but I don't want her touching my stereo system.
Mon. 2/25/13 1:51pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

I kept some dollar coins from a trip a few years ago, worth hanging onto?
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:53pm Matt from Springfield:

@Sean: If you're a numismatist, certainly! If you intend to cross the pond here again, they're still legal tender if you want to use them.
Mon. 2/25/13 1:54pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

I miss recording compilation tapes and I totally agree, Irene, as much as downloads are quick and convenient I miss gatefolds, sleeve notes etc. Great set from Robyn
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:54pm Cory:

Thanks Robyn and Irene!
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 1:55pm Matt from Springfield:

Nice pose you two! Nice "rat top" from Robyn :)
  Mon. 2/25/13 1:55pm 12539:

That was wonderful. Thanks Irene!

I've posted a few pics of Robyn, including one jowly one of me trying to take a snap with my own camera.
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 2:24pm Planet Tyler:

Why isn't Robyn wearing the polka dots in the last pic so he can match the floor? :)
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 2:27pm Irene Trudel:

He switched to a warmer shirt before he left. It was a very cold day when he came in to the studio. And he can't be expected to be a fashionista as well as a great musician. ;D
  Mon. 2/25/13 2:29pm don:

Why don't more people know about Bridget St. John, still going strong today. Sounds like Nico, doesn't it?
Avatar Mon. 2/25/13 2:30pm slugluv1313:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND THANK YOU, MR. ROBYN HITCHCOCK!!!!!
  Mon. 2/25/13 2:33pm daniel kirk:

Bridget is like Nico and Nick Drake put into a musical blender. She's got the ghost-like quality of Nico's voice, but lots of warmth and gentleness. Beauty and sadness...
